Carolina is now in her 4th year of her Bachelors in Sociology degree at the University of British Columbia. Since last year, she has: completed more courses, started volunteering as a youth facilitator and as a co-ordinator for an organization that aims to improve conditions for the homeless, was accepted into a specialized program for ethnographic research, and has had the opportunity to see how her studies apply in real life by visiting safe injection sites with her class. She is still aiming to become a judge one day, but has also expanded her aspirations to include becoming a law professor. While she’s not 100% sure where she’ll end up, she continues to work in a field she is passionate about and we wish her all the best in her career and her future! 📚❤️

In my fourth year, I wrote a 16-page policy analysis on Vancouver's opioid use disorder policies. I did an internship in the health field and by the end of it I returned as a volunteer. And the most important thing, she told people to not cheat, get education, and be independent. She is such an example that smart people can be funny and have other habits. And most important, as girls, if you wanna be respectful and get a nice sweet man like Byen, it's better to improve yourself from inside first. I have fallen asleep in elementary school so many times. My teachers didn’t scream at me, they just woke me up, sent me to the nurse to get more sleep.
Similar case in high school here (in senior year strangely enough). A girl fell asleep during final math class and the teacher got her a few sips of turkish coffee to pump her system up till the cram school hours.
The reason for that is because a few teachers don't think your sleeping because your dumb they know you've been at least working so hard to the point your exhausted so you fall asleep but not all teachers think the same, just wanted you to know :)

I started med school in the Spring of this year and I do part time work as a tire technician. Through my work I was able to find a new drive to continue my schooling, even if it's still another 8 years before I get the degree I want, because my coworkers were older men who had wished they continued school because they saw younger people getting paid more for the same education they have. But, seeing a UA-camr who genuinely supports education and went through with their own education is amazing, when I was younger I always saw hacks that encouraged cheating and doing nothing to succeed and seeing you support hard work is refreshing, keep doing what you're doing!
I started Med School like two weeks ago, and yes, its pretty awesome there are still youtubers like her.

Ok, so I actually use color pens for my notes, but that’s because I have adhd and can’t read the notes without something to hold my attention.

Fizz I do it just because it makes it easier for me to study. I’m not ADHD my color still helps me focus because a lot of the time I stop paying attention without realizing. Coloring my notes helps me stay on task studying and writing them.

Writing an essay and are struggling organising your reference list and bibliography?? ItS nOT A ProbLEM anYmORE
Create a separate document and put all books/essays you used/read in the correct referencing style as you find them, mark them red if you’ve not yet referenced them in your essay, and change it to black as you used them. At the end of the essay you would have a well organised list of all reading you’ve made separated by colour to reference list or bibliography then it’s just a case of copy and pasting it to your main document in alphabetical order.

Real school hacks I genuinely suggest and that helped me through high school (and currently college)
1) Invest in a desk or work space that works well for you. I remember that when I didn't have a proper place to work, I tended to try and put my work off. My current desk was 50 USD and is quite sturdy and works for my needs, it doesn't have to be crazy expensive
2) Keep said desk tidy! Get a pen cup and a few folders, a clear space makes room for textbooks and whatever paper/laptop you're working on.
3) Find a way of taking notes that works for you. I used to take notes the "right" way but in my freshman year I realised that I knew better than my teachers as to what worked for me, I even had two different styles of notes (one specific to math and science, one specific to things like psychology and history). If you can't read your notes, you'll never use them so keep them organised. I always organise mine by chapter and subsection (ex. 11.3 Nature vs Nurture)
4) Eat proper meals. This might not seem related to school but trust me, it is. Have a good and filling breakfast even if it means waking up earlier, I remember during a very dark period in my life I would have a lot of trouble focusing because I was starving myself. Even if you're not that extreme, being hungry can cause concentration problems. Pack lunch if your school lunch is garbage and have a healthy snack before starting your homework (apples and peanut butter was my go-to but I also suggest fruit smoothies, crackers with real cheese, yoghurt with fruit, or vegetables with hummus)
5) This is a bit closer to stereotypical hacks but have an emergency pack. This actually came in handy a lot for me. Inside I kept bite cream (we lived in a place with lots of mosquitoes and red ants), bandages, pads and tampons (even if I'm male, I had plenty of female friends and I had their backs. Still do), aspirin (if your school allows it, if not then carry chamomile tea or mint oil to soothe headaches naturally), and glucose tablets. I personally experienced blood sugar drops and had a diabetic friend so that last one was a bit more personalised (plus our school had lots of blood drives). I also carried tweezers to remove the off splinter or bee sting. I also had a first aid ice pack which is made from chemicals, once the seal is broken then it becomes cold. This I only carried one of since hitting your head wasn't a daily occurrence, but we also had a nurse so that was just me wanting to be helpful.
6) Seriously, don't load yourself up. Be realistic, you can remove a staple easily with or without a staple remover. So often I see people loading up their bags with random crap and while it might seem like a good idea, you're bound to make your bag heavy and lose half of that stuff. Carry what you know you need. For me, I was one of the people that carried a mini stapler because getting up to staple my paper made me nervous, it was something I personally needed. However, I did not load up my pen case with ten pens and ten pencils, realistically I'll only need three of each. One to use, one for backup, and one to lend. If you're an artist and go through four pencils a day, keep a dozen on hand. Pack what you WILL need, not what you THINK you MIGHT need. (emergency pack does not apply to this tip but keep the pack small so you don't go overboard)
7) Keep up with things outside of school. I know it will sound lame but once a week, clean your room. Get your laundry done on the weekend, prep food for lunches if you need to, do whatever you need to make it easier. Like Cristine said, school isn't meant to be easy but you can keep it from being harder. Having clean clothes can save morning panic and packed food will keep you from spending valuable pocket money. For me, Sunday was cleaning, prepping food, doing laundry, and cleaning out my backpack so it didn't get cluttered. Those are habits I still have today.
8) Again, this will sound like a stereotypical hack but have fun with your clothes. I know not everyone works the same way but I fell into a rut of wearing jeans and a sweatshirt every day, I was miserable. I love fashion and feel better when I've put effort into my outfit. If you're on the other side where you don't care about fashion, don't force yourself to look stylish every single day- you don't need the added stress. Dress so you feel comfortable and prepared.
9) Don't wear stupid clothes. Look, you're sitting for hours in a usually cold room, this is not the time to test out your newest tightest jeans. I love fashion but I keep it practical, I'm not strutting down a runway and I don't want to be uncomfortable. This is not the place to wear high heels, super skinny jeans, or uncomfortable tops. You may look good but will you be able to focus if your sweater is itchy while your feet ache? Didn't think so. Wear the style that makes you comfortable but also wear the CLOTHING that makes you comfortable.
10) Finally, take pleasure in the little things. School can be really hard, that doesn't mean it has to always suck. Enjoy the time you get at lunch to hang out with your friends, try your hardest in gym to actually play the sport (You'll naturally release more endorphin's for exercising, don't tell me you don't "like" it), thank that one really nice teacher, compliment someone if you see they have a really cool outfit. Trust me, little things like that can make it a lot more enjoyable, especially if you have a heavy workload or don't fit in very well. I was personally an AP student with four AP classes and I didn't have a lot of faithful friends, but complimenting someone else and seeing their face light up could make my day. I still look back on a girl who had this amazing Valentine's Day outfit and I complimented her at the end of the day since I'd seen her repeatedly, she was so happy and it just makes me feel warm. I can't GIVE you those memories but you can make them. So for five minutes a day, take a step back and think of something nice you did or could say, even if that just means chatting with your friends at lunch.
Thank you so much! There are so many things that I love about this and needed. One of my favorite things about high school (I'm not technically going there anymore even though I'm a junior) was complimenting people. I also understand not having reliable friends or even just stable ones. Unless you count the ones who could be counted upon for needing my notes (if they were legible to them). I love that you carry things for others, like tampons and glucose tablets. And I needed to hear what you have to say about back packs in college. I'm used to carrying everything for all of my periods in one bag everyday, but now that I'm transitioning to college classes I haven't been sure what I'm going to need to have in my bag. To I bring the text books for all of my classes because I'm going to have downtime between them to work on stuff. Or do I only bring what I need for being in class? Anyways, this really helped.

I usually set two alarms on my phone, and put them on the other side of my bedside table, or basically somewhere I can't reach unless I get out of bed. You need to get up to turn off the alarms, and once I'm out of my bed, I won't go back to sleep, I'll just go take a shower.

As a visual learner, decorative notes are honestly very important to me as they help catch my eye and make studying less stressful, amongst other things. But save making those after class, not during! As you should just focus on getting important stuff down while the lesson is going on.
