Hi my name is Yami, I'm 27 years old and I've been studying Biology at UNC Chapel Hill for the last 4 years. I fucking graduate in May baby!! Lol btw thanks for bringing awareness to the unethical child labor occurring behind the cheap clothes. Mad respect sister.
I'm so relieved to hear her talk about how these companies exploit workers. I feel like everybody is jumping on wish bus, completely ignoring the harm that Wish (and other companies) cause
It's definitely an interesting topic to touch on, especially since the solution of, "just don't buy products that are made in poor working conditions" will suddenly happen. I mean, we all have smart phones and laptops. And let's say that we do stop, and some factories close down. What will happen to the unemployed factory workers in the meantime? They will be out of a job and unable to support their families. Countries like China don't have a good government support system for their impoverished, unemployed citizens.
@yomammasheknowz You say that these people may have 'chosen' their jobs, but how could they? The only semblance of choice these people really have is between dying now or dying _after_ a life of exploitative labour. None of us (and especially not the actual workers) will benefit from the free market. The only people who get an easy pass are the ones who underpay their workers -- and are probably so old that they'll die before their hyper-capitalism destroys the planet. A bit bold of you to say these countries aren't developed, when China -- where a lot of these good are manufactured and sold -- has one of the most sophisticated and harmful global economies. It's a terrifying example of late stage capitalism. You say yourself that we take things for granted in 'developed' countries, and your comment is working proof of that.
@@fruitygarlic3601 I heard a speaker one time and he touched on this. What he said was that yes to us in the first world it's terrible how the workers are treated/paid. But to those that live in a third world or an upcoming 2nd world place that these provide money and things that these people would not have. They may be only getting 2 dollars a day but that is 2 dollars more that they wouldnt have. And these people need those 2 dollars. I am by no means trying to say that it's the best way to do things or that it is even the right way but these problems should be looked not by our standards but by those of the country they live in. For some families that 2 dollars a day is all they are going to get and what would happen to that family if it was taken away.
That's more so consumerism's fault, not capitalism's. If we all weren't so entitled to good deals on non-essential goods then this wouldn't be an issue. The issue is that we, as consumers, have become entitled and have demanded for *more* goods and *better* goods at *lower* costs... businesses are then left with little to no choice, especially with government regulations restricting their options. Capitalism isn't perfect by any means -- it is certainly flawed -- but I think if more customers thought about their purchasing decisions a little harder we'd be in a better place with a healthier marketplace.

thank yoou for adding the bit about being affordable, i totally agree with you but cringe every time a pseudo saint is mean to people because they buy cheap stuff
You are literally the first youtuber I have ever watched who as ever acknowledged or underlined the reasons cheap products can me bought. Thankyou so much. I am by no means the most ethical shopper but there's always things you can do to make your shopping more ethical.
Wow like cristine can be so silly but in all seriousness, can you imagine the type of riveting conversations these two might have sometimes? They're both such educated individuals who care about current issues and each other, in a way that complements and balances their relationship perfectly. It's lovely to see and honestly actual couple goals ❤ love you both so much!!!
Can I just say. I really appreciated the nice talk at the end just talking about the world. You both are very smart and I think you personally have a lot of wise information to give. We need more UA-camrs like you here who can smack some truth sense in people :1.
I was doing a content check for my daughters UA-cam usage and your videos were 90% of what shes watching. So was checking you out, Aaaand now I'm addicted to holo. But she keeps telling me I'm using the term wrong. Must do more research.
At first, I saw your comment and I was “oh no”, and as I was about to thumbs down your comment for dissing Simply Nailogical, I read “addicted to holo” and I was like oh? What is this? A mother with good taste? 😂
Man I'm so glad to see a youtuber actually talking about this. I refuse to use wish because I know exactly what sort of conditions most of these products have to be coming from. It kind of bothers me seeing youtubers making huge videos and praising wish, as if they're somehow actually ignorant to the conditions they're supporting. Thank you Cristine
But no one knows 100% that thats whats happening. It could be some 30 YEAR OLD lady who paid like $5 for a yard of fabric to make some shitty shit. You cant get mad at people because they don't think about what could be happening because if everyone worried about what Could be a situation then people wouldn't buy anything or make anything or do anything
I don't know. It kind of felt like she wanted to indulge in the youtube trend but also criticize the business practices/possible human rights violations. You can't have it both ways. You can't be playing into the trend and giving them free advertising as well as all the money you spent on the items and then throw in an obvious PSA at the end and still feel like a good, morally superior person.
TheSongwritingCat I don't know. I didn't get that impression. She knew what she was doing, and I didn't think she tried to absolve herself of responsibility. She just brought up a good point.
Hey I think it's really cool that you talked a bit about working conditions in China with your boyfriend. Sometimes I buy things off Wish too, but also sometimes I feel guilty when I think of all the smartphones we have without worrying. But as you said it's not about shaming the consumers, but just talking about it may change the mentalities of consumers and therefore maybe the companies. If anyone is interested in that topic, just look for documentaries on Samsung/Apple productions. I saw one in French a couple weeks ago and if you wait in front of a factory, you can see little teenagers/kids going out to rejoin their dorms... But anyway I just wanted to say that it's very cool that you mentioned this stuff :)
lmao yeah sorry if it's long, I scrolled a bit through the comments and saw none talking about that so I spoke my mind a little because I think she did a good thing :)
Thank you for adding the info regarding the cons of shopping using companies like wish. It’s so important to give the entire picture especially when you are in essence marketing for them.
Yeah I find this topic a bit tricky to navigate since 90% of affordable retail clothing stores outsource production to factories like where the wish clothes are coming from. I think it will take a culture shift, where one, people don't need a bottomless supply of clothes for cheap and have just a few pieces that are made ethically and two,It becomes socially acceptable to wear the same thing over and over (not saying wear dirty clothes), to truly remedy this problem (or...like the death of capitalism lol). Its all well and good to criticise wish for most probably unregulated labour practises but if you are sitting there wearing a forever 21 shirt then...
Also, I have so much respect for you Cristine. Never once would labor conditions have crossed my mind, and it's shameful how many times I've watched these videos without anyone talking about it. Thank you, and you'll make a difference!
I love watching her videos because at the end whenever there is Ben is brings real things to light that most people don’t know about. Thanks simplymomlogical... and dadlogical.
AluminumDragon it’s because there is children from third world countries getting hired by wish to make knock off brand items for their app but they get paid like 4p an hour, that’s why I don’t buy from wish
Wish doesn't manufacture anything, other parties sell their goods through Wish. Some of these manufacturing companies are better than others (in both quality and ethics).
Cristine, if I wasn't an introverted, partially-agoraphobic non-Canadian, you would totally be my best friend. You're hilarious, but even moreso wonderful for posting this and making it a reality to many consumers that Wish is kind of "too good to be true". I'm so glad a subscribed to you last month!
You two crack me up. I don't even paint my nails and yet I watch your channels. I do like the whole actual conversation between you and Ben part of videos. Also the banana shirt is hilarious.
I honestly really appreciate you trying to teach good, morally responsible, lessons to the kids (and adults... I hadn't thought of that dark aspect of Wish... just haven't bought anything because I assumed it was garbage) watching you. It's rare to find that in the world these days and I bet you make more of an influence than you know.
No lie, Cristine looks like a K-Pop star in that outfit x3 But, again, thank you for using these moments as a teaching moment to bring awareness to the sad reality such products usually revolve around. A key reason why I adore you.
Yeah, I subscribed just because she is hilarious, and I've been noticing her "random moments of sober mature sincerity" for a while, but it wasn't until the "school hacks" video that I realized she is legitimately an amazing person and made me even happier that she has become so popular. She's easily one of my top favorite youtubers now and the site needs WAAAAY more people like her in the spotlight.
Thanks to you two guys for being so over youtube/social media shit and actually taking the time to be conscious of what's going on in the world and teaching it to your audience. Props to you two for that, you're some of the few good ones
Finally, someone who has the decency to say “ 22 dollars is a lot “ when others say “ it’s only 150 dollars COUGH COUGH as/is “. Edit- Thank you for 264 likes 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼 Another edit few days after edit- 351?!?! TY Edit-533.....waowwww
I love what you're doing with your channel, Christine. You don't take yourself too seriously and you're super funny, but also have slices of reality in the same video, and I think that's important. So keep it up.
Thank you for mentioning work conditions for cheap stuff! Well, not only work conditions, but the quality/safety of materials, ecostandards and so on. It is important.
Aristaifly Sad but, even the expensive things we buy may be from sweat shops. I bought a high end sweatshirt last week and noticed it smelled very strange when I tried to wear it. It was very poor quality as well. It just made me think...? I tossed it and won't buy from that store again.
Jenny Ren yes, I totally understand that price doesn't protect from nasty things, however, chances that labor or environment has been compromised in $20 pair of jeans (used hundreds of liters of water in making) are much higher than in $50 pair. On the other hand, I'm not sure how to search for proof.
I love that even with the dumb silly stuff Cristine posts, she and Ben use it to spread important messages like the talk at the end of this video, and in her school hacks video too about staying in school love you guys for using your platform and influence for some good!! ♥️
im so glad they talked about consumerism, I feel very passionate about that shit. I try to do my part by only shopping thrift/used so at least my money won't be directly funding the companies who do harm to people and the environment
andrea it was a great part of the video. I also try to shop second hand or save up for Fairtrade if I can, and I'm in the fortunate position to be able to do that, but I know a lot of people who are unaware of the real problems behind fast fashion, along with a lot of very aware people.
andrea you do realize these workers don’t have any better alternatives? No one wants to voluntarily work at those factories, but they do because it’s the only way they can make money.
You're right to an extent. A lot of workers move from the countryside to cities in Bangladesh, Pakistan etc. where there is some degree of medical help available and the prospect of work. But what a compelling argument you make for these companies to behave ethically and pay a living wage- they do indeed have the monopoly on employment in some areas, or at least meaningful and long-lasting employment. (I'm mainly talking about mainstream fashion here, but Wish seems to operate out of China a lot, and ofc China has notoriously poor working standards in many areas.) If these companies were to raise their ethical standards and stop using middle-men to operate their factories and employ their production line workers, how many lives would be improved enormously.
Cristine's only the 2nd person I've seen mention the way this stuff was probably made. The other was Annika Victoria, who thrifts items and actually tried to remake some things from wish herself.
Thank you so much for that bit at the end about the terrible reality surrounding cheap clothing items. This is why I love y’all. Not just the silliness, not just the beautiful holo, but also because you’re genuinely good people with a good message and a willingness to tell people the truth. I am so proud to be a subscriber. Not many channels have the balls to inform their audience.
I’m actually so glad they talked a little about how most of the items were probably made in really poor conditions, it was nice to see some of the real ness behind the humorous video. ALSO I LOVE YOU
Really appreciate Ben for coming in and doing the "hey I'm not angry and I'm not judging you too harshly, but we do need to talk about the moral issues with what you're being a part of here" bit.
Not only are the work conditions of the outsourced clothing manufacturers overseas terrible, but because the clothes are mostly terrible quality they end up in the trash. This in turn takes up a LOT of space in landfills, and takes decades to degrade and make more room. Many of the items can even take hundreds of years due to all the harmful chemicals used to process the garments and grow the GMO'd cotton. At the rate the fashion industry is creating these cheap throwaway garments, the planet is at serious risk for permanent damage that we can't reverse. If you want to know more details about these issues check out the documentary The True Cost. There's also thousands of articles online and in print about the dangers of this business model.
Stephanie Gunawan to add to all of this we can’t just think of it as overseas, far away; it happens in the US. (Don’t know if you are US citizen or know about it’s prison systems) but for those that do not know, US private prison systems act as slave camps where prisoners work for pennies to make shitty (and not shitty, but it is still slave labor) products for shitty (and not ***seemingly***) shitty companies. Christine is right, it is hard to ethically shop, but there are ways to make mindful choices!
the original poster is probably american. 99 percent of americans think its ok to treat prisoners like animals. its known by all americans about prison rape being rampant but they think the prisoner deserves it even if they just wrote a bad check or some petty bullshit
@@spar11123 I'm an ARMY too, so I don't particularly like your comment itself. I commented what I wanted to. I figured there were many comments already, that captured my feelings perfectly
11:40 This is why I try not to shop at Walmart. It’s cheap, but their employees suffer from poverty a lot. Sure other stores are more expensive, but I’d gladly pay a little more to a store willing to give their employees better pay and benefits. Just because you’re getting cheap items does not always mean that someone isn’t paying the rest of the price.
There was someone who worked at my school, and quit to work at Walmart. She said that she actually likes working there. But on the other hand..my cousin works there and he gets bullied because he's autistic, but he doesn't quit.. because I think it's actually good enough pay for someone his age or something like that. I just don't like Walmart because the one I go to, the employees are shit, they stand in groups talking. And the manager is an asshole
They legit had an example of the iPhone which is one of the most overpriced overrated phone out there. You can't assume that just because something is more expensive, that they treat their people better. Remember that at one point Starbucks paid minimum wage and McDonald's didnt
netflixisbae agreed, but this is China. We know more information about working conditions and pay in China. It’s not like these are assumptions. We know why it’s so cheap. It’s because they pay their people shit and we’re benefiting from it. These are things we actually know, and it’s not good. Now companies like McDonalds are assumptions. You are right. McD’s does have better pay than most.
Nah now it's 50% "omg she played bts dna" And 50% "oh ma gad why are armys commenting like that, they're so annoying, Christine was addressing and important issue in this videooooo!"
That little heart to heart at the end about the possible conditions that these clothes came from is really important. As consumers we vote with our wallets, and we need to be responsible and make sure that the companies that we support are ethical in the way they run their business. If you have have the means, try and shop ethically. If you don't thrift shops and clothing drives are a great way to get items you need at a reduced cost that don't support businesses who exploit cheap labor. Anyway, stepping off my soapbox now, have a great day everyone! :)
cant we just let people buy what they want?? i've used wish a lot, that doesnt make me a bad person. i just dont have thousand of crowns(danish money) to buy the actual products. if you dont like wish, dont use it, but dont tell others that they cant use it, because you're against it. its like saying "im a vegan, so you cant eat meat!" or "i don't play video games, so you cant do it either"
@Purple Unicorn nowhere did this person try to tell people where to shop or suggest you're a bad person for shopping at wish. they very reasonably suggested people should be more mindful of where they shop which isnt asking a lot
Purple Unicorn Purple Unicorn Purple Unicorn I think the point that is being made is just what was said: we vote with out wallets. If you personally are fine supporting a company that exploits people in developing countries, has poor labor practices, or takes advantage of their workers then fine, that is up to you, but you need to know that your money supports their business practices and there is no way around that. I didn’t see anyone telling you what to do either in the video or the above comment, just people trying to educate others. I don’t have a lot of extra money to buy the best, organic/fair trade/locally produced/top of the line products every time and it sucks feeling like the only way I can buy the things I need are from companies that may not be all above board, however I can work to educate myself on where my things are coming from so I can at least try and do the most good (or more like do the least harm) within the realm of what I’m able to. No one can be perfect all the time, but we can at least try. Like it was stated in the video, in many developed and western countries we don’t see the conditions that many of our products are produced in, so it’s important that we try to make the extra effort to find that out for ourselves, because regular support of unethical businesses makes a difference in allowing them to continue what they’re doing. No one is going to stop you, and the reason these businesses are so successful is because they know how to get people to buy from them- paying employees little and using the cheapest materials is a perfect way to pass on the savings to you! It’s a winning formula, but that doesn’t mean is doesn’t have negative consequences for others who aren’t ourselves. What we want to do about that is up to each of us.
Purple Unicorn you just took the message said in the video and comment and just ripped it to shreds. Of course buying shit on wish for minimal amount of money makes you a bad person. You’re letting underpaid children and women who can barely make a living out of their pay just because you want some useless crap for your own enjoyment. These people work over 12 hours a day and they barely survive the toxic fumes and bad air conditioning in the fabrics. We live in a society where we are addicted to buying new things that don’t have any meaning or real usage in our lives, we just want stuff to have it.
honestly i love cristine because she can make jokes and all that but still uses her platform to talk about real issues because she knows she has a young audience and she knows she can educate them
Thank you so much for the talk at the ending. I recently in school had a unit about those awful conditions that children are put into, more commonly known a sweatshops. Now I can never look at my Nike shoes the same way or that T - Shirt I spent $20 for and the worker who made it probably got less than a penny. It’s so awful but it’s hard to be an ethical consumer when practically all of our clothing is made in sweatshops and it makes me sad.
Btw,in case you didn't know, holographic laser foil is usually created in China, cheap by crossing two small lasers on top of photographic film that captures the repeat pattern.Like that great holographic laser foil behind you and against the wall. Shuyi Xu they do it on purpose so you'll take a snap of it and give them free advertising. 'o'

Shuyi Xu Yes that would be a good idea.
Shuyi Xu true though

this is the only wish video ive seen where y’all acknowledge the ethics of this kind of buying. its good to see!
Mystiqueivy I've been lucky enough to meet them and you've got it all right! They seemed like truly humble people with good intentions for the world.
Mystiqueivy agreed!
Mystiqueivy I'm not in school

WHY IS SHE TURNING INTO JENNA MARBLES
I really liked the serious discussion... a great combination of fun stuff and intelligence...
Cristine:”NOW THEY WISH THEY DIDNT MESS WITH ME!”
Cristine:*Picks Up SimplyKnifeLogical*
Can I just say. I really appreciated the nice talk at the end just talking about the world. You both are very smart and I think you personally have a lot of wise information to give. We need more UA-camrs like you here who can smack some truth sense in people :1.
WonderWolfArt same, I'm so happy to see someone finally addressing this issue.

She snorts holo powder when she has spare time. She is still smart.
I want a segment where Ben just talks about serious issues

The segment would be called simply dadlogical.
The title on point tho
If you post a video on wish sold nail polish that WILL help me think twice about buying cheap ass nail polish
She made a wish title 😂
too many words ay
HOLY SHIT STFU BTS IS PLAYIN
Oh my God I didn't even notice that until now. LOL
I really appreciate that you mentioned some people have to buy cheaper clothing despite potentially poor origins because of financial issues.
I was doing a content check for my daughters UA-cam usage and your videos were 90% of what shes watching. So was checking you out, Aaaand now I'm addicted to holo. But she keeps telling me I'm using the term wrong. Must do more research.
#Momgoals
You're a cool mom
Thank you for not judging Cristine and thinking she’s a bad influence!!
At first, I saw your comment and I was “oh no”, and as I was about to thumbs down your comment for dissing Simply Nailogical, I read “addicted to holo” and I was like oh? What is this? A mother with good taste? 😂
ur the best mom EVER!!!
Love the real talk at the end!
They could have added that if you can only afford inexpensive clothing - that goodwill can be a solid option.
🙃
e735star yeah also Burlington and Ross have a lot of inexpensive things
I don't know. It kind of felt like she wanted to indulge in the youtube trend but also criticize the business practices/possible human rights violations. You can't have it both ways. You can't be playing into the trend and giving them free advertising as well as all the money you spent on the items and then throw in an obvious PSA at the end and still feel like a good, morally superior person.
TheSongwritingCat I don't know. I didn't get that impression. She knew what she was doing, and I didn't think she tried to absolve herself of responsibility. She just brought up a good point.
"if i wore it at this height, you would see my holo taco" i'm dying because of your polish line
Dayum you wrote a whole paragraph
lmao yeah sorry if it's long, I scrolled a bit through the comments and saw none talking about that so I spoke my mind a little because I think she did a good thing :)
I love this comment, I agree and was just thinking this and then read your comment at the exact same time 😂
Barbie G I agree! The documentary Made in Bangladesh is amazing too!
I wish people who buy at Primark do the same too.
…I wrote an essay on Fashion and Globalization for my E-Commerce course.
I love watching her videos because at the end whenever there is Ben is brings real things to light that most people don’t know about. Thanks simplymomlogical... and dadlogical.
Wish is such a gamble. Some things are surprisingly great quality, while others just suck (as expected).
Thats why AliExpress is better. There are reviews by real people... Also don't buy the first best thing you see, research a little.
Mobin92 thats the first time I’ve seen “aliexpress is better”
AluminumDragon j
Cristine, if I wasn't an introverted, partially-agoraphobic non-Canadian, you would totally be my best friend. You're hilarious, but even moreso wonderful for posting this and making it a reality to many consumers that Wish is kind of "too good to be true". I'm so glad a subscribed to you last month!
Yaaas bitch
same
You two crack me up.
No lie, Cristine looks like a K-Pop star in that outfit x3
But, again, thank you for using these moments as a teaching moment to bring awareness to the sad reality such products usually revolve around.
I know that like Jojo siwa girl she looks like her when she puts that on
There's definitely some fake holo in this video. I can feel it.
Malia Intikhab yeah
Malia Intikhab you mean me?
Wish: how much holo would you like??
Cristine: yes
😂👌
“Oh my god- it came with free air!”
Maesi ALDC me when I buy chips 😂😂
Thanks to you two guys for being so over youtube/social media shit and actually taking the time to be conscious of what's going on in the world and teaching it to your audience. Props to you two for that, you're some of the few good ones
Mdi223 yes! I really appreciated the serious talk at the end. Fun video along with serious lessons. Thank you Christine! More if these please!!

I love the title because thats literally how they describe their products.
Yes. That's the joke.
Lol as a person who’s never been on wish, I was very confused at first.
that was the point
Love how the title is so much like wish product names.
yess please make another one of these but nail polish
I love what you're doing with your channel, Christine. You don't take yourself too seriously and you're super funny, but also have slices of reality in the same video, and I think that's important. So keep it up.
wow why does she actually pull off that outfit-
this is where mom and dad speeches started, right? so now, bcs of Wish we have Simplypodlogical?
"You can see my holo taco" I died!!
I died even more... Hi my name is Taco 🌮😆
Jenny Ren
yes, I totally understand that price doesn't protect from nasty things, however, chances that labor or environment has been compromised in $20 pair of jeans (used hundreds of liters of water in making) are much higher than in $50 pair. On the other hand, I'm not sure how to search for proof.
Aristaifly That's the problem, how do we know for sure where/how these things are made.
ARMY! Someone send her a Love yourself answer cd cause of the beautiful color of the album

Well done to Ben for opening the obvious narrative and Christine for including it in her video x
I love that even with the dumb silly stuff Cristine posts, she and Ben use it to spread important messages like the talk at the end of this video, and in her school hacks video too about staying in school

im so glad they talked about consumerism, I feel very passionate about that shit.

Dundee iiii
Dundee iridescent is not the same thing as holo. We ain't playing games wish, we ain't playing games.
Dundee Your profile pic of a Bjork album cover is more 90's than that jacket ever would hope to be.
But most clothes are made in teribble conditions. Heard even the higher end clothes. But agree with the rest.

Matthew Falls preach!!
I was going to Walmart today but now I don’t know
There was someone who worked at my school, and quit to work at Walmart.
I have watched this video tons of times, but the line about your packages hoping on a moose cracks me up every time!

+Purple Unicorn she did say if you have the means try and shop ethically.
I love the realistic wish title

Keep up the good work on both accounts 💖 much love x

Irrelevant , but I'm from Ireland too lol
Me too! I worked with a group that works with women coming out of poverty situations, some of whom had worked in sweat shops to produce cheap products like these. It is not something people really think about when they see the price tag of an item so I appreciate that you brought the topic up
