- Shadow home secretary Yvette Cooper says the government's Rwanda plan is simply an "extortionately expensive gimmick", "costing hundreds of millions of pounds" of taxpayers' money.
Ms Cooper says a future Labour government would replace the scheme "because it could not simply be scrapped" - but would concentrate on border security and people smuggling gangs on the continent.

I'm certainly no Labour fan, but I couldn't have put it better.
Years ago even Tony Blair suggested using remote, bleak Scottish island to house illegals. Not only would this be vastly cheaper, and not open to court challenges, it would also be a serious deterrent.

@@flemlion13The star category of the hotel has no bearing on the accommodation of the asylum seekers. No staff are in the hotel or chefs. The hotel gets paid by the govt for the accommodation provided.

This ridiculous policy won't stop one boat.
A ridiculous plan that never stood a chance. All that is required is to meet the boats on the edge of British waters and stop them. Give them food, water, life jackets and better boats if need be but do not allow them to enter. If the weather is bad then use a liner in the channel to hold them until it improves. A fence and guards on land is perfectly acceptable - like Poland's response to Ukraine - so I do not see why the equivalent at sea is not.
It is hard not to come to the conclusion that the lack of government action is deliberate.
They can seek asylum on the british waterborder and international law says UK have to bring them onshore and process.

Remember, this all started with Blair, who enshrined the ECHR in law and ramped up immigration, not to improve Britain, but "to rub the Tories nose in it".
The former Australian minister who oversaw a similar scheme in Australia (Alexander Downer) is doing the rounds and explaining the boats cannot be turned back in most cases, so Cooper is out of her depth, and the best solution is to break the incentive.

Let’s say it cost £15,000 per hour per flight. 9 hours each way equals £270,000. Then we add operating cost (staff, building, maintenance, etc) of £10,000 per day, and we get a figure of £280,000 per flight. 200 migrants per flight equals £1,400 per migrant. Multiply that by 750,000 migrants per year and not taking into account hotels, food, clothing, what we pay Rwanda, the flights will cost the taxpayer over a BILLION POUNDS EVERY SINGLE YEAR!!!!!
Rwanda have said they can only accept about 200 a year. Go online and read the policy statement. That's why this is not and never will be a deterrent.
Surely this is a Brexit benefit!! All this debacle could’ve been avoided completely! During Brexit Boris the dummy had the opportunity to renegotiate the Dublin agreement as offered by EU but he decided NO and said “we’d have our own” scheme all too much of a hurry to “get Brexit done” …. @@Durka-Durka01Asylum seekers get £49 a week, this is for food, clothing, toiletries, travel. Once they are classed as legal the money stops and they have to go through the benefit system if they don't have a job and find their own housing. They can only stop in asylum housing until their claim is processed. After that they find their own housing.

We don't know where they will house them either with all accommodation used currently being classed as inadequate. 4 star hotels, detention centres, barges and even recently closed military camps. People on the boats cannot be classed as illegal immigrants until they have been processed. In fact upon processing 70% of them are deemed legal. It's the way they get here that is classed as illegal. Trouble is because the govt have closed down nearly all the safe and legal routes asylum seekers have no option but to come here illegally.

Incoming boat people.... 50000 per year. Rwanda maximum intake over 5 years is between 1000 and 2000.....How can it be a deterrent when the chances of being sent there are miniscule.
