Amazing New Drum Solo Technique

- This is my drum solo that I did at my Ken Loomer Jazz Quartet concert at the Glenridge Performance Arts Center in Sarasota, Florida. I`m always trying out new idea`s on what to play using the drum technique I have learned over the years. At one point during my drum solo, I wanted to do something very simple with just the left hand doing fast singles, and the right hand just tapping the ride cymbal. This will give the solo a chance to bring down the level of sound and make people listen to what I`m playing in a simple way. Another new technique I thought of was playing on the edge of the cymbal with my left hand while my right hand was hitting the left stick to produce a clicking -cymbal sound. Through out this solo I`m doing new idea`s based on the technique that I have. I always want my drum solo to be exciting and interesting. The people will let me know right away if they like what they are hearing. Here I`m using my Gretsch Renown Maple drum set with the 16x20 inch bass drum, 9x12 inch tom, 14x14 floor tom, 5x14 snare, and a 5x10 soprano snare. These are excellent drums with all wide open full tone sound. I can clearly hear every beat and roll I`m playing and I love the smaller size drums with the music I play with my Ken Loomer Jazz Quartet. I will be posting more from this concert. You can also check out the many concerts I have posted of my Ken Loomer Big Band.
Right into Buddy Rich. Amazing Stick Control!!! Incredible Drum Solo!!!! Keep On Drumming.
Like Buddy, I always want to give 100% in my performance and try out new idea`s on what to play. At the 3:04 mark, I made up this new technique on how to play a cymbal. I got to know Buddy Rich and he even gave me a drum lesson and let me play his Slingerland drums. The reason why I have my Ken Loomer Big Band is because I love the music he played so much. Glad I had my camera with me so many times showing pictures of me and Buddy. Here is the video showing those pictures ua-cam.com/video/BTsnnA6nlvk/v-deo.html I always honor Buddy by playing some of his great music at my concerts. Here is a new video I poste of my Big Band playing a rare Buddy chart ua-cam.com/video/bdh1P-6LqMc/v-deo.html Thanks so much Albert for your comment.
Holy moly! The speed, technique, dynamics and precision. Years of practice and so many things to unfold, all exploding so quickly, so huge. Those snare rolls sound like I’m at the foot of Niagara Falls, after a heavy rain!!!
When it`s my turn to do a solo, I want it to be dynamic and exciting for the people who come out to my concert. The great part about playing live is the people will tell you in real time how you are doing. Thanks so much for your comment.
Most noobs are thinking
"That is nothing I can play faster and much more difficult songs."
Good for you but this is not a song.
This is pure technique.
This is years of hard work put into a 6 minute demo of what you can do of you practice and have musical taste.
Amazing sir.
Lovely and inspiring. 👌🤓
For me, since this was at my concert, I wanted to do a solo that was dynamic and exciting for the people who came to see and hear my band. I am the leader of this Jazz Quartet and my Ken Loomer Big Band. So I put in a lot of work as a drummer so I can do these live performance. Yes I put in a lot of years of practice to play at this level. Thanks Alessandro for your comment.
A true student of the craft. LOTS to LOVE here. ACE.
I spent a lot of years learning this craft for sure. Plus learning to be a good band leader and business man. The easy part is playing for the people when I do these concerts. Plus the fact I also have my own Ken Loomer Big Band ua-cam.com/video/4QQxdaOBcrc/v-deo.html But I love my work. Thanks Eric for your comment.
Ken, you truly are one of the greats! Your control, precision, clarity, economy of motion, pulse, energy, style...all things of beauty. I will tell every musician that I know to check you out. No drummer that I've ever seen keeps the Buddy torch burning quite like you. I truly believe that you could share the stage with any of the greats of all era's, and deserve the space. Thank you so much for the inspiration. You ooze magic, and the lifetime of dedication and commitment to your instrument is awe inspiring.
I don`t know what to say Glenn about your kind works to me. It means a lot to me that someone like you would take the time to express how you feel about my playing. My goal was always to have my own bands, Jazz Quartet, Trio, and Big Band. With hard work and the desire to do it, I have done it. It`s always about the music first which is what I learned the most from Buddy. I love playing with my outstanding musicians and just supporting them to make the music feel good and exciting. When it`s my turn to do my one feature drum solo, I want it to be exciting and dynamic for the people who come to my concerts. I always give a 100% in every performance that I do. The best for me is to play live music, no tracks, and to be able to express myself on the drums. I`m still learning all the time to be a better drummer and band leader. Thanks so much for your comment.
100% true. Only drummers and other musicians from that Big Band Era can truly appreciate your artistry. However...there ARE some very talented kids coming along now that are seeking all that great stuff out. And really playing it right. Total respect to them.
@@roadrocket7 That is so wonderful to hear that some of the new younger drummers are going back to find out about these greats of the past and learning how they played. I got to see in person drummers like Buddy Rich, Joe Morello, Gene Krupa, Louie Bellson, Elvin Jones, Sonny Payne, and so many others. I learned from all of them, and also the drummers of today. For me it`s always about the music first. That is why I have my own Big Band and Jazz Quartet. I`m hoping these young drummers will want to do the hard work of being a band leader and hire excellent musicians to play in their band. I employ a lot of outstanding musicians. I think just people know what I`m all about when they hear my Big Band and appreciate the music that I play. You can check this video I just posted of my swinging Ken Loomer Big Band ua-cam.com/video/bdh1P-6LqMc/v-deo.html I did a big jazz festival last year to over 10,000 people and I had so many young people who said after my performance it was the first time they heard a jazz Big Band live and now are fans of my music and band. That`s the problem, these young people never get to hear the kind of music I play. But when they do, I get so many new fans.Well thanks for taking the time to write to me.
Buddy and Joe M. would be proud. Damn fine display of classic traditional grip drummer. Outstanding!
Glad you notice I was using traditional grip in this performance. As you can see , I learn the Joe Morello finger control which took me awhile to learn. It`s great to use and I always think of new ways to use this technique. Like Buddy, I want to always give 110% when doing these type of open drum solo. Thanks Jim for your comment.
I came more out of the school of Ringo than Buddy but I always appreciated the great jazz masters and would siphon off little bits here and there of their astounding techniques. I started in 6th grade on snare drum and I remember staying up late one night and seeing Louie Bellson on the Tonight Show, it blew my mind. Seeing the relaxed ease Louie had in his wrists helped me greatly as I learned the rudiments. This cat has that same relaxed, effortless style that belies the actual Herculean effort he's putting in. This was a lyrical, well arranged and extremely exciting drum solo...just incredible.
What a very thoughtful and wonderful comment you just wrote to me. Since I grew up with the music of the Beatles in the 60`s, I always loved Ringo Starr. Like he said, I can`t even do a roll, but his drumming for the Beatles was just perfect. The drum parts he made up like Come Together was way ahead of what drummers were doing back then. I got to know Louie Bellson very well. He even gave me a few drum lessons and let me play in his band. It was the same with Buddy Rich. I looked at these two drummers and everything they played at a high level looked so easy for them to play. I got to know Buddy Rich also and he gave me a lesson. Here is a video I made showing the pictures of me with Buddy and Louie and the stories I told about them. Here is the link ua-cam.com/video/BTsnnA6nlvk/v-deo.html The reason why I have my Ken Loomer Big Band is because of Buddy and Louie. Buddy Rich was the one who told me don`t let anyone tell you it can`t be done to have a Big Band. Just work hard and go for it young man. Well I did work hard and form my own Ken Loomer Big Band. Louie Bellson even sent to me some of his charts which I have played and posted it on my channel. Here is a new video I posted of a very demanding but amazing chart that Buddy Rich played called Porgy and Bess ua-cam.com/video/bdh1P-6LqMc/v-deo.html For me, It`s always about the music first and I wanted to be a band leader who can hire great musicians and keep this great Big Band music alive. I want to give the people who come to my concerts the best performance possible. When I do a solo like this, I give it a 100% of my talent. I thank you so much for your letting me know what you thought about my performance.
@@KenLoomer Wow Ken! Thank you for the links to those videos, extraordinary. I'm so happy that a drummer fronted Big Band exists in 2023 and that it's a band that seriously cooks! I'm so happy I discovered your stuff and I appreciate the information. You are a major talent who deserves as big of an audience as you want. All the best brother.....
@@whatspadethinks Thanks for taking the time to watch those video`s. I just a hard working musician doing the best he can. At least I can post my jazz bands on youtube. When was the last time you ever saw a Big Band on any of the Late Night Talk shows. Or even a jazz musicians. It`s never! In the old days when I grew up, guys like Johnny Carson would always have a jazz artist on like Buddy Rich. Well I have done good just doing my live concerts and enjoying my work. Thanks so much for your comment and all my best to you.
I’m blown away by this. I’m not a drummer however I am a jazz musician and I appreciate what you’re doing here. I can also see the problem already highlighted that non-musicians may not realise what you’re doing and how complex it is. I love the soprano snare
It`s wonderful to hear from a jazz musician like yourself who can appreciate what I as a jazz drummer is doing. As a drummer band leader, I want the people who come to my concerts to enjoy what they are hearing. They may not know what we are playing, but they know when they hear something special. When I got the standing ovation for this performance, then that means so much to me that they enjoyed it so much. Plus the fact I`m always get asked to come back playing at this venue. Just did another with my Ken Loomer Big Band. Here is that video at that same performance arts center ua-cam.com/video/bdh1P-6LqMc/v-deo.html The music always comes first for me as a drummer band leader. I thank you Lee for your comment.
Great concept and amazing skills. I'm sure Buddy would have had you over for lunch and many jams. Great color changes and dynamics while keeping the "And next" look on your face. As pro drummer I loved this. Hats off to you and your future. Bravo
I got to know Buddy Rich and even had a drum lesson from him. The reason why I also have my own Ken Loomer Big Band is because after going to his concerts, I loved the music he played so much. So I told him I wanted to be a drummer Big Band leader like him because I wanted to play the same type of music he played. He told me " Don`t ever let any one tell you can`t have your own Big Band. Just work hard Ken and do it". Well I did work hard and now I`m in my 20th year as a Big Band leader playing the music I love with so many outstanding musicians. To see pictures of me and Buddy together, here is the link ua-cam.com/video/BTsnnA6nlvk/v-deo.html At every concert that I do with my Big Band, I always play some of his great charts like this one ua-cam.com/video/MM-OXmNhzO0/v-deo.html I love being a band leader of my jazz quartet and Big Band. When I do a solo, I want it to be exciting and dynamic for the people who come out to see me and my band in concert. Thanks so much for your comment.
Phenomenal drum solo. Incredible stamina and creativity
When I do these type of solo, I want it to be exciting and dynamic for the people who come to my concert. Thanks Mitch for your comment.
This is a mouth watering solo!!!
The only way I know how to play is give 110% in every performance I do for the people who come to my concert. Thanks Dave for your comment.
absolutely amazing!! if your a drummer it is impossible to not watch this entire video and then 2 more times at least. That one handed roll is the unicorn of drumming. Amazing!!
Glad you notice that left hand single stroke roll I did. It`s at the 2:02 mark. My technique of doing it as you can see. My left arm, wrist, and fingers are not moving at all, but you can see the left hand single stroke roll. It`s magic! I want my solo to be exciting and dynamic for the people who come to my concerts. Thanks so much for your comment.
2:00 Kent, I'm not a drummer, but I have always loved drummers and drumming. I love this. It's musical, it changes throughout the solo, and the drums sound good.
5:00
Since I`m a drummer-band leader, I want my solo to be exciting and dynamic for the people who come out to hear my jazz band at these concerts that I do. Of course I love playing with my outstanding musicians who always inspire me to play better. Thanks for your comment.
Incredible. So light and brilliant. God bless
When I do these type of open drum solo, I want to be relaxed so I can perform a dynamic and exciting solo for the people who come to me concert. Thanks J A for your comment.
That’s some ass kicking technical drumming. You stole the show! 👍
As a drummer band leader, I always want to give 100% in every concert that I do. I use the technique that I have learned to make my solo dynamic and always trying out new idea`s on what to play. Thanks so much for your comment.
love this so much Ken... thank you for posting this, truly inspiring playing.
Your comment means a lot to me. As a drummer band leader, so wonderful to hear my playing is inspiring. I always play at my best when I do these live concerts in front of people who come to see and hear my band. Thanks scotty so much for your comment.
Wow Ken that was an amazing drum solo. Thanks for posting.
I was trying out some new idea`s on what to play with the technique I have learned over the years. The best part about playing live is that you get feedback from the people right away. I thank you for your comment and enjoying this performance.
This is incredible. The problem with doing this on stage is that only actual drummers and other musicians are going to hear and see just how incredible it is. This isn't going to wow the crowd because most people in the crowd are not musicians. As a professional drummer, I find this incredible.
As a professional guitarist I am blown away, never seen anything like it and I am 59. My guess is he stops most people in their tracks when he starts that 1 hand technique.!! Incredible.!!
My main goal as a drummer band leader is to do the best job possible when I do my concerts. When it`s my turn to do my one featured drum solo, I want it to be exciting and dynamic for the people who come to my concerts. Yes I understand most people will not know a lot of what I`m playing, but so many people after the concert come up to me saying how much they enjoyed my playing and my band. That means a lot to me. Your comment means a lot to me Mav Div and thanks so much for taking the time to write. I wish you all my best with your drumming!
@@KenLoomer I'm a professional musician too. (40+ years) It will wow non musicians too- the commenter is in denial of his own jealousy- that is why he wrote that.

Awesome! I hear traces of Buddy, Professor Peart, John Henry Bonham, Joe Morello... countless others. Just fabulous! Kudos to you, Ken.
Like most drummers, I have learned from those great drummers you have said. I`m still learning from a lot of the drummers I have seen and always want to be a better drummer and band leader. Fantastic
Big band Era drums
Well these Gretsch Renown Maple drums are more smaller jazz drums with the 20 inch bass, 12 inch tom and 14 inch floor tom. But with my wide open tuning, these drums have a big full sound to them. I take great care of these Gretsch Renown drums. Very easy with these drums to have the big wide open tuning that I like. Every beat that I play comes out very clear on these Gretsch drums. Thanks for your comment.

Great playing Ken! Truly a maestro!
I enjoy so much doing these concerts with my Jazz Quartet. It brings out the best in me. Thanks so much for your comment.
Awesome solo and new techiques!
When I do these type of open solo, I want it to be dynamic and exciting for the people who come to my concert. For time the first time at the 3:04 mark I tried out this new technique of playing a cymbal. As you can see I have the left hand stick straight up just touching the edge of the cymbal. The right stick is tapping on the left stick to get a bounce off the edge of the cymbal. Seems to work well this new technique. Glad you enjoyed this video Alexey.
Fantastic solo and expression of your vocabulary on such an elegant instrument!
These Gretsch Renown Maple drums has that big full open sound that fits my style of drumming so well. Thanks Vegas for your comment.

@@KenLoomer Trust me, it shows! What an amazing band, & what an amazing drummer. I hope you don't mind me saying, the first thing that came to my mind was Buddy Rich, & he is my all time favorite drummer. Thank you for the great performance.
@@jamesbasham5439 Buddy was the reason why I play drums and became a band leader of my Jazz Quartet and Ken Loomer Big Band. For me Buddy was always about the music first and gave 110% in every performance he did. I became a huge Buddy fan because of the music he played. My first love is having my own band and playing with outstanding musicians. You might want to check this video of my Big Band playing a great and demanding BR chart ua-cam.com/video/bdh1P-6LqMc/v-deo.html Like Buddy it`s always about the music first. Nice job, very entertaining and technical at the same time. Reminds me of watching Buddy Rich - except without all the shouting at his band.
The bad news is I do shout at my band when they do something wrong. But no one is perfect. As a drummer band leader, I always want to do the best job possible and entertain the people who show up for my concerts. Like Buddy I always give 110% in every performance that I do.
