This raven was entertaining himself sliding down the roof of West Yellowstone's public library. Story of the video here: blog.yellowstonetraders.com/bl...
There's a video I saw years ago with a black corvid (can't remember which species, but they're all clever) which had found a piece of brown cardboard. It took it to the top of a snowy roof, stood on it and "snowboarded" down it, then flew back up with it and repeated it until, I assume, the fun wore off!
As I recall, it was a plastic disk, like a lid of some sort. The video is still available: Crow skis down roof. What's fascinating is not only that he does it repeatedly, but he tries the sunny side of the roof before going back to the shadowed, slicker side.
@@ArtfullyMusingLaura it's fun and necessary so why not for the little birds. Also in this cold weather they'd prefer snow baths over liquid water ones because there's the possibility of water freezing on their feathers, or so I heard.
As a kid, I remember watching ravens fly into the wind so that relative to the ground, they were hovering. Then they would tuck in their wings long enough to do rolls. That proved to me that they were having fun, there's no other reason I could see for them doing that.
I watched 2 ravens one day racing. They were perched on a rock, would take off at the same time, fly around another rock and land in the same spot. after a quick rest, they would do it again. The did probably 10 laps that way.
Love how ravens remain playful as adults: watched one repeatedly doing barrel-rolls in the updraft from a cliff, coming round the side up to the edge then flipping upside down as he caught the breeze ❤
Oh, look at this goofball. I have ravens all over my neighborhood, and with my slanted roof being right next to the window of my bedroom, I oftentimes wake up to ravens taking a happy slide down my roof.
Ravens can mimic what they hear. If they have a 3-note call... just try your best to do a 4-note response (like 2 low, 1 high, 1 low) - and see what happens.
They're probably saying to.each other "I sure wish I knew what he was saying...". It's a good bet that they like you & envy your collection of "stuff" in your house. You know how they are abt "stuff"! 😁
I think he's giving himself a 'bath' to clean his feathers since water is not available at this time of year. He seems very deliberate to me... as well as pretty dang smart.
There are videos of them using bottle caps and plastic wrappers as makeshift sleds, and they will carry it back up with them to do it again. Definitely doing this for fun. They have the intelligence of a 7 year old human.
Those fancy collective nouns were invented by nerdy scholars. In real life and real English, a flock of crows is a flock of crows. "Group of crows" would also be sensible.
2021 anyone? Amazing bird's. I feed a family of crows in my garden, and watching them, is an absolute joy. they act like a human family, with all the sibling rivalry, mom and dad arguing ect. Wonderful birds 💕
It is strange that there is no grandma crow, who takes care of the kids, while their parents go to "work" to feed the family. Maybe it's a City Crow thing, where they emulate human social group norms.
There was a YT video years ago, of a crow using a tin can lid as a saucer, to slide down a snowy roof… even more proof of how intelligent these birds are.
One of the best reasons for UA-cam to exist. I love that video love listening to the family watching him. No I didn't understand what they were saying I knew that they were enjoying it immensely
I feed a flock of crows every morning... They drive the hawks and owls away from the area and protect the sparrows, cardinals, bluejays, squirrels, etc... I pour a pile of corn, sunflower seeds, and peanuts on two very large stumps... The crows start calling me about 1 hour after sunrise... then I mix their food two large coffee cans and deliver their breakfast... These crows are so large that sometimes i mistake them for hawk when they swoop in for their meal...
Reminds me of years ago when we watched a crowd of (UK) magpies perching at the top of tall trees and jumping off into the strong winds coming in from the west, allowing themselves to be whisked upwards, while they 'shouted' like kids on a rollercoaster then flew back down to join the back of the queues to have another go. Our garden was a long thin acre but the racket they were making reached the house. ❤
We have a bunch of jackdaws settling in our chimney for over 20 or more years. These are our somewhat noisy, but beloved neighbours that we wouldn't miss for the world.
I lived in a place for awhile with a garage. I had a flock playing, but they truly slid down, and flew back up to do it again. I watched them for quite awhile...they were having such a fun time!
Watching birds have fun can be very amusing. A couple of years back I watched some sparrows enjoying themselves. About 10 of them gathered in the top of a 50 foot pine tree in next door's garden. They were taking it in turn to dive out of the top in pairs heading towards the back of our house, swiftly doing a 100 degree right turn to cross our garden pulling into a hard climb to go through a gap in the top branches of a tree two houses along from us, a smart 70 degree right turn to head for the wall of a house in the street behind us then a hard 120 right turn to climb back to the top of the pine tree. It was like watching a bird version of The Red Bull air races. One thing I notice was that they were not afraid to overbank for the tightest turn possible.
In a book called “Wintedance,” author Gary Paulson tells of running the Iditarod. In it, he describes how he and another musher watched a small herd of bison run down a hill and slide across a frozen lake….repeatedly. We consistently underrate other species’ imagination, intelligence, and emotions, including a sense of fun.
I see the beautiful yt algorithm has brought us all together again 😂 God I love ravens. I never knew they like to play in the snow, but now I do. Legend say, he's still sliding down that snow to this day
In the summer of 1965 we saw Paint Your Wagon at the Pink Garter Theater in West Yellowstone. We had a WONDERFUL time and my big sister caught the garter that was tossed during a saloon dance number. Dad grew up in Montana. His granddad drove tourists around Yellowstone Park on horse drawn buses to see the sights at the new park. We were on the way to visit Grandma in Whitehall. I was so upset with dad when he washed the muddy paw prints off the car. Mom almost exited out the driver's door right over dad when that sweet little baby bear stood up to say hi to her thru the passenger window.
I'd say he's having a snow bath, but certainly enjoying it. I don't doubt that animals, particularly birds, do things for the pure joy of it. Many years ago, my wife and I hiked up one of the peaks on the rim of Wilpena Pound, South Australia. About half way up, an irregular movement up ahead caught my eye. It got rapidly closer and turned out to be a big corvid (probably Australian Raven) in a hurry, heading for the bottom by alternately tucking in his wings to dive vertically, then spreading them to pull out before hitting the hill. He flashed past us so close we could hear the airflow rushing over his feathers, and a sort of thump as he pulled out before continuing downward. We stood and watched him until he reached the bottom and pulled out above the top of the scrub. We've always remembered that as the day we saw Jonathan Livingstone Crow. If I was a bird, that's how I'd want to fly.
if u seen other videos they clearly enjoy sliding down . if its just cleaning why not stay at the top where theres enough snow and why does it climb back up and not stay in one place - i think its enjoying itself
The raven is not only playing in the snow , the raven is cleaning himself in the snow , birds will use the snow to clean themselves in it when there is no water or the water is frozen.
I lived in Sitka, Alaska, famous for it's amazing ravens... especially at the small national park there. Walking down the street they'd call out to get your attention and then roll down the steep snow covered roofs... and start laughing.
Even wild animals like to play. An adult wild bear was once observed playing with a block of ice until the block broke. It poked at the pieces a bit, but then started crying.
I cared for a dog who started his snow-roll with his nose; his body followed in a spiral. The raven seems to be trying to emulate that kind-of movement. Thank you very much for posting this video.
I had a neighbor who used to hose down a sloped bed in his front yard in the winter so it'd ice up and the crows would come slide down it on their backs like kids in a playground.
Wonderful - so cool you are in time to record this. Ravens are amazing. They rule the skies here in Cornwall. Take no shit from any species - except us , of course.
The local crows here base jump off of a large chimney. They dive to the ground vertically, in a falling manner, and then, before hitting the ground, start flapping their wings and land. Almost looking proud. Only to then repeat the whole thing. At first I couldn't believe what I was witnessing. Had a blast watching them. I'll try filming it next time.
If you ask me (and you won't) the bird isn't playing. He isn't sliding as much as digging into the snow. I think he's either cleaning his feathers or removing parasites.
Why is this in my recommendation just now? Idk but i like that lol. The owner of this house (roof) must be like wtf happened up there if he didn't saw the Raven

He is trying to take a dirt bath, but in the snow. He’s grooming himself. 😊❤
Yeah bath of sorts 🛁 🛀
Exactly. He’s not trying to slide he’s trying to clean himself. He has no water so he’s trying to do it in the snow.

@kd1841 - The raven seems to be having great fun doing it.
Yep, a snow bath. The powdery snow filters through the feathers, removing dirt and parasites.

Like dolphins in the surf.
This is so wholesome. Birds are very playful and silly when comfortable in their surroundings they definitely have a sense of humour and amusement.
Yeah, they are smart animals who can play. I love it.

I think we can all agree that it's adorable when baby animals play. But how is it even more adorable when adult animals play??? This is fantastic!
You notice how he keeps looking around, like making sure there's nobody watching? 😁
It is a reminder that we humans also have that ability for life long learning and play.

I agree, bathing.
Snow bath it’s a thing
Like kids, needed bath turns into play.
Just remember, every living thing thing needs joy in its life. You, me, them.
Not true. You're specifically referring to warm blooded mammals
Youre a fantast!
