Crows just get bored and check stuff out. But yes, they actually do develop team based strategies and work together to do things. They're very social animals, ridiculously smart.
They're very smart and I have no doubt that they saw it as a potential source of food. If they see an animal that's is weak and is getting close to dying from age (or anything, really), they'll stalk it and wait for it to die.
If that was true, they'd wait further away from it till it died(crows only eat carrion of larger animals),....they might be trying to shoo it out of the area(possibly their young nearbye).
i think they smell death wandering around the dog. when i watched that dog, i realize, that dog is very old and on 100% not healthy. i have many times seen crows testing a health of some weak or bad looking animals. in a Czech expression could "crow" mean something like burial employee. someone who put deaths under ground or eliminate them other ways.
Crows eat anything edible, including humans (hence their latin name "corvus corone" - carrion raven), and they show no mercy to anything weak, ever. A flock of them may kill newborn fawns or even calves. In the video, they were "playing", but they were also testing the dog's resistance to their taunting, and if the dog had been too weak, they would have attacked it in earnest.
Slow wag and stiff posture are not necessarily a sign of a happy dog. Dogs do this when they hit their tolerance threshold. The crows are wise in keeping to the back end the the dog towards the end.
Dogs also wag their tail when nervous. The dog probably recognized that the crows were keen on investigating, but didn’t know *exactly* what. Plus, it’s not every day that a dog gets messed with by a small murder.
Fun fact: crows actually have a thing for pulling other animals tails some think they do it to distract larger animals from their prey others think it's just for fun. I'm not making this up lmao
It'sa bit of both, they probably do it "for fun" as instinctive practice, but I've definitely seen videos of them working together, pulling on an animals tail to draw it off whilst the rest go in and steal food.
Not trying to one up you but I actually watched a Northern Grey squirrel sneak up on a chipmunk and pull his tail. It seemed like it was pure mischief. Everything is so much more complicated than we can know
I love crows and Ravens. My favorite birds. They are incredibly intelligent. They can use tools and fashion them. The are able to distinguish faces and are able to pass that information on to others. They love to play.
1:23 Look closely, this dog is purposely ignoring the crows while wagging it's tail to get their attention. These are juveniles and are very curious towards everything, when the crows get close to investigate the tail the dog whips round immediately. They are playing, not waiting for the dog to die
I knew he was gonna pull the tail, and started gigglesnorting while waiting for it LOL. I've watched them do it out in the world to eagles, gulls, pigeons, other crows, and reportedly they even sneak up on mountain lions and nip their tails too. They're notoriously brazen and clownish. Great footage!
I'll bet those crows have played with him before. I like how the one crow looks up at the tip of his tail and the other crow seems to egg him on to go for it. The poor old dog is just standing there in anticipation... what's takin' so long? And he knows he can't charge aggressively at them or they'll run away for good and end the attention he's after. Too cute.
"Bad Crow, bad crow, whatcha gonna do, whatcha gonna do when the dog gets you" (No crows were harmed in the making of this vid, all crows are innocent until proven guilty in a court of caw)
40+ years ago I watched crows working as a team attacking a neighbors dog from behind, while another, at the front was stealing his bone. It was too heavy for it to fly off with, but they managed to get nibbles from it. I was amazed.
They are like kids in puberty, everyone wants to be the Hero in Front of the others ;) If they can ride Bikes, they would be Little Hells Angels, ROFL ! Greetings from Hamburg !
These were not bad crows! They are mischievous birds by nature and decided to have a little fun with the dog. The dog seem to enjoy being teased by the birds. If the dog had seemed to be a threat the crows probably wouldn't have acted like the same way. Crows like to watch people go about their daily routines just like some people like watching birds.
I have 5 old crows that come here to eat nearly every day. My Dad asked me to take care of them before he died, 20 years ago. There is always 5 of them, so I assume it is the same 5. I didn't know crows lived that long. They are scared of me, and I don't know why. i have never let anyone bother them. I have a 5 gallon feeder with cracked corn and sunflower seed, I also put out suitable food scraps. They love fish scraps. The raccoons get the scraps overnight, so I put out food scraps early in the morning, then sit and have my coffee, and watch them through tinted glass doors.
Having had pet crows it's a genetic instinct but they seem to do it to see if other critter has anything in it's mouth. Pull it's tail and other animal usually opens mouth and drops food and spins around to defend itself. Looks back and food is gone, snatched by other crow. They are literally like a pack of street kid pick pockets.
@@helentucker6407 Bird watching is great. If the crows get tame enough where you can feed them by tossing it. Try doing a call to get them to come in and getting them to make sounds to get the treats. They are super smart and will pick it up fast and can copy most sounds. They also remember your face forever and will pass it on to other crows watching that you are a safe supply of food. They love nickel size chunks of scrambled eggs or hamburger for trick learning treats. Just be aware, you might call one day and 20 crows will show up lol.
What a great dog!!! Yeah the crows are having their fun trying to go for that tail. I know that trail. It says "I'm on guard, bit worried" but such a good natured dog to stay steady, is a dog you can trust in so many other iffy situations such as with other dogs and animals. I love watching animal behavior and an especially trustworthy dog.
Setter saying to himself: (old man voice) "if I were 20 years younger... Little whipper-snappers" I think that was some good fun for him though. Like the crows volunteered to do a show at the nursing home.
Often see crows 'teasing' dogs in park. A few years back our German Pointer had had enough and leapt about 6 to 8 feet in the air and plucked one of the offending birds out of the sky! Thankfully he released straight away (on command) and the crow flew off, I wonder if he learnt his lesson that day.
Aww! This is really sweet watching those crows trying to circle their wagons around the pretty pooch! Thanks so much for sharing and giving us a smile. Crows are smart birds. You should watch some videos of them. Have a great day, Dear!
Ha. When I watched this I wondered if the crows were hoping to pluck a little nesting material. Sparrows always come and use the hair I clean out of the brush after grooming my dog on the patio in the back yard.
By the fact that they didn't fly away after the dogs first playful bounce towards them shows that they did not see the dog as much of a threat. And each time he did it, they created less of a distance. They where understanding this is more play then aggression. Or, at least that is what I think :p.
ROFLMAO...hilarious and absolutely fascinating!! And the title is so funny too. This sounds like it was taken near an airforce base or something. The dog seems to be watching for and wondering about the sound. Great video!
Ah, bless, I think they were all playing, the dog was wagging his tail, I think he was letting them play. I'm trying to befriend the crows in the park across the road from my house, I had about 15 surround me the other day, they have so much character. I am trying to get them in my garden too, but I worry what the neighbours think, when I hold a slice of bread in the air and shout "CROW! - Oi CROW! - I'VE GOT BREAD! AND ALSO PEANUTS!!!" (it works in the park!) :D
These are so cute, having fun. t These are juveniles, they are rambunctious & hang around in a pack, kind of like teenagers. When they get older they find a mate, settle down &l stay with for life.
I have a cousin who owned crows as pets. This isn't protecting a nest behavior, as the crows are too relaxed. It's just basically a game for them. They do like fun. In fact, there is a video on YT of one using a coffee can lid as a toboggan and using it to repeatedly slid down a snow covered roof.
It's quite creepy. The crows seem to want to get on the dog's back. Notice that near the end the dog seems to have something wrong with the right leg. Injured animals are a good target for predatory animals.
Both parties seem to be having fun. The crows aren't pulling the dog's tail hard enough to hurt it, and the dog is only startling the crows, not chasing them off. It's great seeing how these very different animals interact; a dog turning its back to another means that it intends no harm (possibly using it to "fake out" the crows in this context), and the crows take advantage of that to sneak around the dog, both sides keeping up the game.
All a cunning distraction while their unseen crow friend was lifting cameramans wallet.
