LEVEL 6. Bounce your left foot on the hi-hat pedal with ball of your foot staying on the pedal to slightly open them on 8th notes. Gives it the washy sound. It's something Chad does on alot of RHCP songs like Scar tissue etc.
Yup, and it's hard AF to do. Such a simple song, but to play it masterfully w/ all the dynamics and keeping it in the pocket and groovy requires years of practice.
Level ?: Bounce the hi hat pedal with your BALLS?!?!?!?
And its also missing the rimshot which is a huge part of chad s playing and some hi hat accents
That's wa-a-ay higher than level 6. The whole left foot pedal thing is very hard.
@@pedrovianna2917 That's level 7.
I love these 5 level videos. Thank you!
Thanks for the feedback!
This is the song I’ve always used to teach my students groove, ghost notes, and drags. Great tune!
Which part is so called "ghost note" , excuse my knowledge I'm lost
@@azeiras ghost notes are the little taps on the drum are not on the downbeat. They are typically on the upbeat and are considered filler notes but can add depth to a song.
@@heyitsbroski ow I see.. you mean like commonly being used in acid jazz music or many alternative rock , and like lots on britpop band drummer habit usually play ?
@@azeiras 0:10 listen to how the snare is played
@@AiR1DaN got it , thanks 👍
5:57 - 6:08 I just cant figure out that part, even with Domino's wonderful tips
2 uppers, and a quick flip flap!
That's Chad Smith signature lick
One day, you will conquer the blockage and on that day and beyond; you will rule!
Please make more of these videos for us beginners who love bands like RHCP but could never dream of playing their songs! A super simplified version is a fun way for us to practice the basics while grooving along to our favorite songs. thanks!
Any rock song thats in 4/4 time you can play level 1 and 2 along to.
if you practice a lot and you're smart about it and practice perfectly, then you can eventually play their songs even if it seems impossible now. always learn slowly without mistakes and you can get fast very soon.
You can find more instructional videos from Chad Smith here is a link ua-cam.com/video/gXo5B_KN2wk/v-deo.html
Its easier to Search Chad Smith teaches drumming. The chili peppers are my favorite band ❤❤❤❤
Just need a guitar equivalent for Snow... ;-)
Chad removes the ghost notes in the 3rd and 4th measure of the groove and plays a very driving but nuanced 1 and 3 bass, 2 and 4 snare, building tension, then lets it ease out with the ghost notes returning when the phrase repeats. “If you want these kind of dreams it’s Californication….” builds because of the lack of ghost notes. It’s a subtle nuance but very important to the song.
I am glad I am not the only one who notices this. one of my favorites on the song that adds intensity and builds up tension for the next breakout of guitar + drum riff. *cheers*
Yeah, I was waiting for that bit lol
Ya you’re right I could tell something was missing but not what but after reading this you’re 100% right
Nice, so I'm not crazy then haha. I'll play Californication this week and that is how I've being practicing, without the ghost notes on this build part. I was starting to think I'm deaf for not listening the ghost notes here 😂
This dood is at level 6.
Level zero here, never held a drumstick in my life. Still enjoyed the video!
So glad I'm not alone! Lol
Joining the club zero 😋. Still dreaming of drums.
You'll be at level one in no time! Just start :D
@@MajkaK1313 don't just dream on it, do it!
So cool you checked out the video and don't play drums. If you've EVER thought about playing... we have a great course with Domino called 30-Day Drummer. It gets you up & running on the drums in 30 days so you can play tons of songs like this. She'll be running it again February 27 - March 27. We posted a link in the description if you're interested!
It's great to see Drumeo paying attention to Chad Smith and his work for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, be it mostly for entry or level drummers. If level 5 is supposed to be equal to the execution of the drums on the record, it's missing a bit of the groove. As others have pointed out, Chad bounces his left foot on the hi-hat to subtily add variance to the sounds of the hi-hat. (Matter of fact, he applies the same technique to the kickdrum sometimes, as you can clearly hear in the drums-only recording of Snow.) He also slowly increases and decreases the tension on the hi-hat in structered ways, for instance to mark every 4 bars, or only right before going into a fill before going into a chorus for example. He also adjusts the dynamics on the hi-hat with his right hand, and especially on Californication he emphasises the quarter notes noticeably less than demonstrated in this video. However this technique of his is sometimes only subtle, and refined over years of playing. It's something that can maybe be explained in a video or comment, but ultimately can only be learned over a long time of practice. I've been focussing on Chad's drumming for years and dedicated my youtube channel to his time with the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
he did get a drumeo award this year.
@@krusher74 that's true, forgot about that. Good for him! haha
Yeah, I'd call level 5 an advanced intermediate version, but Chad is a pro. Still definitely helpful for understanding how to build the groove though, just needs more flair.
I love how she moves when she grooves. Great drummer! 🫶
Weird things a guy would never say about another guy drummer.

Thank you, but you know I'm already studying..then it turns out that I have too many things to do, it's better that I go ahead with the method, also because it's going really well. I am very satisfied to have chosen you. 😉🥁👌

@@MGA19a Hello, yes I signed up because many of you insisted, but honestly, I'm very, very far ahead of the highest level of 30 Days ... I'm sure it will be a nice experience, there's only one thing I don't want, I don't want to have brought away the place to someone who is at the beginning and would need it more, so if anyone is in this situation, please give him or her my seat, ok? Best regards and have a nice day.
Waitlist does not seem to accept new entries.
Love this song! Our band just started covering it and it's so much fun to play. Great explanation on the video. Well done making it accessible for everyone!
I did the 2nd 30 Day drummer and it was amazing! I highly recommend!! Can’t wait until the next one. Domino is an excellent teacher, as you can see! ❤
I don't play drums. I just watch because your enthusiasm is contagious. I could watch you playing the drums all day long.
You just watched because she's pretty LOL
@@Didi78180x I would lie if I would deny that. But I am a musician after all and I play the guitar while my nephew is playing the drums. So it is also highly educational for us. 👍🙂
This is amazing! I think most drummers start playing drums because of they want to play their favorite song. Drumeo has contents how to break down songs but they must continue doing content like these more as well! Thank you
Just saw them in Melbourne first time seeing them and first proper concert I have ever gone too it was a great experience. Californication has one of my favourite drums tracks on it
Such a crazy song on drums, but the explanation in levels is great!
Thank you for these guidelines, I already started by learning drums in the pandemic, but your style also comes with an important improvement. I will continue with your course because things will get bigger and better for my style. Thank you Domino! 🥁👌
I always find the experts in the comment section. I should stop watching the videos and come straight here first so I can really learn what I should do (eye roll).
oh my,... such music.. such performance.. it gives me goose bumps
Love these, thanks for making and posting! I think your levels are spot on. I'm a student and was able to get "student" down but not quite able to get "cover band" yet!
Been watching a few Drumeo videos lately, and it has inspired me to pick up my sticks again. Been like 13 years. Been a bassist since 2010, and hardly touched a drumkit. According to this video I'm around level 4, maybe a bit lower. Like inbetween 3 and 4, but closer to 4. I'd say that's pretty good after 13 years away from the kit. Can't say I've ever been a level 5 drummer. But nice to see I still got the rhythm in me.
This is the best format to help me to learn as a beginner. Merci Beaucoup et s.v.p. make a bunch of those!!! It is inspiring and easy to follow.🙌
Loved this video! I always love to play this song on the drum because the beat one the drums is so fun! Now I can show them why
A classic. I’ve been a Drumeo member for several years and drummer for a few more. I’m rockin’ the cover band level; can’t get the HH accents to line up yet. Great video, looking forward to more.
Absolutely great way of teaching. Thank you!!
Domino is sooooo goooood!!!
I can listen to and watch her all day.
Awesome!!!
Been s Chad's fan since I listened to him for the first time in RHCP Mother's Milk. I think hi has the perfect combination of technique, power, groove and passion. A living 🥁 legend.
Californiacation was the first solo I learned on guitar. 20 years on, still playing and going strong.
Started learning guitar 2 years ago and Californication is also the first song I've played all the way through! :)
@@Goofyboy2006 Nice one. I mostly play 80s heavy metal now because I really like the riffs and shred. Just finished a load of Dio and Whitesnake stuff. It's amazing how I started with something so simple as Californication and now I've moved onto Randy Rhodes, Vivian Campbell, John Sykes stuff.
Californication was also the first song I learned to play the whole way through on guitar and I will never forget that feeling of accomplishment! even after listening to it so many times I don't get fed up 😊
I've played drum for 24 years..... And I've playing all genre and I love watching you playing drum even it really average technic.
Awesome teacher
Wow, this video is great!! And these breakdowns are very good to understand the groove too. I'm on level 4.
I did and thank you. Btw i am in level 5. And i can say that even though I've not played drums for years and years now. But DRUMEO you have revived, rejuvenated, encouraged and uplifted my spirit to play drums again. Thank you for giving me hope, I'm truly grateful. And i also hope that one day i am worthy enough to play there in the studio.
Love from India ❣️🙏🏼
Thanks dor this video Chad Smith is one of my favorite drummers with a list of others too long to make the list your videos are amazing you give your listeners and viewers the treat of your skillset and your infectious way of playing. Just when it couldn't get better you have instinctual videos to your list. I'm happy watching your videos in their entirety and wish you well in your success.
1- Great video! I would love to see more of those 5 Levels
2- Your gear looks amazing! Beautiful thing to see!
merci domino ça me rappelle mes débuts avec mes potes!!!!super travail, continue comme ça !
Level 5! Been playing drums for 20 years, teaching for 7, but still, even in my experience, have much to learn myself!
I started to play with this song! I told my father thad i want to play drum just after earing this song for the first time and he told me "ok, you've some money? Let's go to a music shop" and I go trough the 5 levels ... and more!
Chad Smith drumming looks simple but is very complex when you listen all the notes!
Thanks for this Video Drumeo and Domino !
I'm a around level 3.5. I loved this demo!
This is such a great way of teaching
Those drums sound phenomenal
these videos make me excited to learn
wow! awesome lesson, please more!
I have zero musical talent, but I know it when I see it. Its so cool to even a layman watching how the mechanics are broken down and then reinvented as art when it is done right. Cool stuff.
the trickiest part of the song for me was always trying to get that hi-hat sound just right.
totally agreed, funky control by Chad
Bounce your left foot in the hi hats on 8th notes. Kind of like when you bounce your leg when your nervous when sitting down. Foot stays on the ground. Just the heel is bouncing. Gives it that washy sound. Helps accent the space between.
@@MdhLV why are we nervous? (is it the domino effect)
Chad hits the drums quite hard aswell.
This is very impressive! Just like playing guitar hero, when you get to a certain level of musicality it can be difficult to reduce and simplify due to all of the automatic rhythm processes you’ve grown as you’ve learned as a musician. Being able to break down a part like this is a valuable skill! It demonstrates that you understand the core of what makes the groove work in the first place!
This works for many things. Try getting a competition swimmer to teach a 5yo swimming. Breaking a skill down to its bones and building it up is a skill.
Uhhh real music is not even like anything in guitar hero no offense
This is is such a great video for beginner drummers, because it shows you that you don’t have to be an insane drummer in order to “basically play” the song. You can play a very rudimentary version and still feel confident and enjoy yourself when you’re first starting out. You really don’t have to be Chad Smith in order to learn and have success.
one of my favourite songs!
Great video and explanation, very fun song to play. I always thought i was a beginner at this song but in reality i am a level 3 student, thanks for the confidence boost 😄
Very cool! It's refreshing to know what nuances are required to level up. Glad you enjoyed!
Great professional job done here
We love all of those videos! It would be really interesting to have some metalcore/progressive drummers featured, i.e. Nic Pettersen from Northlane or Matt Halpern of Periphery, they have really tasty grooves and placements!
La belle Domino! C'est toujours agréable de la regarder jouer du drum!
I love how Domino dances while she plays 😄
Figuring this out by ear in the early 2000´s made me proud.
Woow nice amazing performances 👏 God bless you dear 🙏
love your lesson .im a senior citizen beginner
great stuff , wish I had vids like this when I was first learning , I was always trying to play as the artist did and ...yeah most times I'd have to move on couldn't play the whole song that way.
Great video, this is really helpful!
Love your moves!
Level 2! Already joined the 30-day drummer 2.0!
Just like chad, domino is the definition of charisma playing drums
drum-level videos like these are always inspiring to realize what kind of progress people do (or don't), cheers and thanks :D
I started teaching yesterday , this video was so helpfull to me how to parting a popular a beat and biulit up step by step Thx Drumeo ❤️🔥 and in the name of my first padawan too , she will be glad 🙏☮️ and Marry Christmas to the wole crew
I liked that's so much Domino I loved you 💓 😘 🥁 .
Better of First Time Episodes! A beast!! 🤪
drums sound great!
amazing video! Please do more videos like this.
Muy bien la explicación
I dont play drums, i dont have a drum kit, my left hand and left foot only move differently when i walk BUT Domino is such a funny and good drummer it just makes so much fun watching her.
(just rewatched the two Slipknot Videos she is involved in ^^)
Whatttt 🔥🔥love this love DRUMEO TEAM
Love the lessons (almost a level 3) :-)
Great vid, I'd be stoked with Level 4!
Sick kit
Thank’s for this vídeo! I’m in level 5!
Best NBA ref drummer I've ever seen
Domino! Soooo nice and sooo good!
This video sold me getting PAISTE CYMBALS.
Hi-hat sounds too good. ❤
The level I’m at is varied. I’ve been playing drums for about 19 years of my life now and certain things I’m good at and other things I have a hard time with. I’d say my level is at a 4 on difficult days and 5 or better on my good days. I have a brain injury, so always being able to get my body parts to do what I am wanting them to do is difficult most days.
I’m not a drummer but I can play this on level 3. Could never figure out how to play it on level 4 and above. This vid gave me a better understanding of what is going on. Gonna try it soon
Awesome! She is a great happy drummer. Chad smith is a way cool drummer too.
You are so beautiful, smiling and kind ❤️🔥❤️ thank you for your work, you inspire 🙏💓
Amazing!!
Drummer/ NBA Ref…. Good combination!!!
the key to the original sound to me is to be just a tiny bit behind metronome. it gives it such a fantastic groove
Yes bro, then you get the feeling of falling on the beat, works great for medium to slow temp songs.
Do y'all have a video on miking these drums? This channel has had some of the best sounding drums I've heard.
Always have tried and usually fail to let the kick bounce off the head versus keeping the tension on the pedal. Really can create a more open kick sound.
Been drumming for quite a while, so I wonderd where I would be at. But in 10 minutes I managed level 5. Unfortunatly the washy accent on the HH is hard to produce on my E-drums 😀 Nice Video, nice song to jam to
Great video - I was taught to play a 32nd note instead of a buzz roll at the end of the phrase to try keep it tight. Traditional grip makes it easier.
That's what she does too, it's not a buzz roll.
I love this song!!!!!
She’s a very very beautiful drummer. Wow!
gr8, thank you,
Her energy, god, I love it!
The only thing that's more gorgeous than Domino is the sound of that snare. It sounds so good!
Really nice!! I am a level 3 (student)
Exelente amiga sigue asi
Honestly, after Domino’s performance on her Before I Forget video I automatically click on her vids cos she’s ace 👍
you personality is great.
I like the drums sound
I honestly learned level 5 somewhere during my first yr of drumming, this wasn't particularly hard
I like the concept of simplifying songs though... I understand the point of the video 🤝
