If you need to learn how to fold clothes and be in "love" with them, you need a lot more than Ms. Kondo here to help you. Most people's dressers are NOT a mess, so her so-called "method" is nothing more than reducing the size of what you put inside it by folding it smaller. It's not rocket science.

Hey, at all the angry American house moms complaining about how crazy Marie Kondo is: She's Japanese. A lot of what she's saying is based on specific notions inherent to Japanese culture. This video is a rough translation of what she's actually saying, because American English doesn't have an actual equivalent for most of these concepts. Japanese culture on the whole values community, gratefulness, minimalism, and social harmony in a way that just doesn't make sense to most Americans. So instead of being defensive and hateful, recognize that your culture is not her culture, and that those differences aren't a bad thing. And read the damn book before you start talking about how crazy she is.

For the record, the Japanese business culture in Japan is just as bad, if not worse than our corporate culture. They're also extremely xenophobic. We could both learn a lot from each other and others. I'm Watching You certainly don’t have time because you’ve put lot on your plate. I’m wondering why you chose to have so many children in your current situation.
I’m surprised you have enough time to fully nurture each of your nine children unless your your family pitches in. And by pitching in I mean your parents must be the primary care givers (hopefully). Unless, of course your husband (hopefully you have one) is the primary care giver.
I’d hate to hear you put them in daycare so you can pursue YOUR goals.
Excuse me for stating the obvious, but unless your husband stays home to manage the household and care for the children, I have to say it seems you’ve done a poor job of family planing.
Hopefully your full-time job pays for all your and your family’s expenses (or are independently wealthy), because, if not, it seems as though you may be using government programs to pay for your expenses.
I know I’m making a lot of assumptions, but with a full-time job, night school and nine kids it really sounds like someone is getting shortchanged (either your children or the American tax payers).
Hopefully I’m wrong on all accounts.

I live in Turkey, Istanbul. Many people including my sister had to move because of the urban ''transformation'' (more like destruction) project and it was eye opening. Because we were pressed for time we had to throw away many thiings, a lot of other things went to storage and some essential things went to their rented flat . That was my aha moment. The financial impact of the things you don't quite need, trying to store things you think you might need or miss someday is very evident when you try to pack and organise things in a very short space of time.

    • @twitch136661
      @twitch136661 8 років тому +158

It's not really about talking to the fabric itself or seeing it as living. It's about expressing outward gratitude for what you have. When you learn how to appreciate your items, it helps you to appreciate a bunch of other smaller things in life that we take for granted. And when you can be grateful for everything from your kitchen pots to your cup of coffee, you can really surround yourself and even others around you with a sort of peace and happiness. You don't have to straight up talk to your clothes, it's more of an inner dialogue to yourself kind of thing.

I tried her method but the problem is, once the clothes are folded, I cannot recognize them. For example, I have several black T-shirts with different size of sleeves, when they are folded, I don't know where is my black t-shirt with long sleeves and the other with short sleeves... so I change a bit her method to adapt it.

It is funny to see people complaining about her and people standing by her side as if it is a war of universal principles. Guys, nobody needs to fold clothing like that and nobody is saying that if you cant do that then you didn't "succeed in life". Moms and busy housewives complaining about her way to folding and showing gratitute: if you don't feel like you have the time for that or if you are tired, just don't do it. That's not a moral issue. It is just a woman helping others to be more tidy. That's all. People nowadays are so hysterical.

I’ve always been bad about keeping my room tidy. I have a lot of clutter. I was willing to try anything at this point, I just turned 27, it’s time to get organized. I searched a bunch of tidy videos and found out about Marie Kondo. I know some people here are pretending talking to inanimate objects makes them feel crazy, but I talk to myself all the time, anyone who lives alone and says they don’t is lying. It’s just a way to retain sanity lol. Growing up on Disney movies, I’ve always talked to inanimate objects, it’s basically just thinking out loud. No one is around to hear you so who cares? It’s kinda soothing. So her talking about thanking your inanimate objects and the like makes a lot of sense to me. I’m gonna keep learning her methods so I can finally get everything in order, she’s so smart and inspiring. Good on her to find a smart way of doing a seemingly everyday task into a career, I’m proud of her. She seems so together and prolific in everything she does. I’m excited to keep attempting to imitate her methods! Lol

I don't know about the love passing on to my clothes, but this has always been my method of folding clothes. My mother has been my inspiration for folding the freshly laundered clothes. She will always stretch and pull out all the wrinkles and fold the clothes so smooth that sometimes ironing them isn't necessary. My brother and I used to call her our human iron box when we were kids. Seeing her fold the clothes all thru my childhood has imprinted this method onto me that I will literally open up the already folded clothes done by husband or someone else and redo it to my satisfaction.
