@chocolate chick There is nothing shallow about living with inner peace and harmony in your own home! Clutter is such a stressor psychologically! Living with the few items that spark joy is a very deep and profound idea
Marie Kondo's method is absolutely fantastic and has a lot of benefits especially for people with mental health issues who often struggle with maintaining order and picking up after themselves. A lot of what she writes and does is heavily related to and based on the tenets of psychological therapy, especially mindfulness therapies. This clip felt incredibly disrespectful to a really excellent book and author, especially as most of what the audience and Ellen seemed to find so amusing were just differences in culture and language between Japan and the US.
Kind of unfortunate - I felt like they were just laughing at the way she spoke and moved. Marie is too cute, and her system is actually really practical. I've color-sorted everything in my drawers this way (and my husband's clothes), so you can see each t-shirt / item easily. Storing vertically gives you more space, and because they stand up on their own, it's easy to remove and add items without messing up the folding. Socks last longer this way because you aren't stretching out the elastic. It's really a great book & system.
HATED how they were basically mocking her, even when she merely spoke - mocking the fact she speaks a different language and through an interpreter. I like Ellen but when anyone is just slightly different she makes fun of them. I noticed this when she has Celine Dion on her show. So disrespectful. I get she is a comedian but I think if you are doing a talk show you should honour your guests- not make fun of them.
Camilla Ferrell Because she has a racist colonial blood of her forefathers running through her veins, hiding behind felt wing tolerance. As a minority myself I can smell nuanced racism from miles away.

Yeah, iI felt the same too. That she wasn't being taken seriously. Japanese culture is so full of knowledge and spirituality that is worth to learn from them.
@ligia cruz, the Christian standard from a fundamentalist standpoint is that God is the source of all knowledge, reason, logic, etc., and that non-Western cultures lack a source of knowledge worth respecting, for that reason. For spirituality, it's a much larger problem. They discourage an open relationship with genuine spirituality, and see spiritual beliefs of outsiders as a reason for fear, anger, and ridicule, in any order you please. Even many less fundamentalist or less/not Christian people have some lingering version of this going on.
The woman on the other side of Marie was rude when she said 'hows that different from what Ellen did' Not paying attention to how neat Marie folds clothes!
IKR? I speak English and Japanese fluently. I didn't find anything funny or hilarious with the way Marie was speaking; actually it was very informative and inspirational!
@@jun4466 same, not funny at all, it's a completely different language ffs of course the sounds and gestures are going to be different but there's nothing funny about that. Just because you don't understand what a person is saying doesn't make those words any less valuable. I guess Americans don't get that because they are so used to being talked to in English and never bothering to learn a second language :D
“Tiniest”... 🤔 my respect level towards Ellen just dropped... Marie probably felt a bit uncomfortable too with this interview but she was still trying to be polite and show her best behavior.. gotta appreciate Japanese honne/tatemae culture...
I am a 30+ japanese woman (born in western culture, lived there for a while and then moved to japan) never read Marie Kondo books because I've seen her on various japanese tv shows and thought that her method wasn't very new to me or just not for me.(but yes, her book was a best seller in japan) She never talked this fast in those shows but maybe they didn't have enough time for her. Still, the girl was trying her best to let people know what was her method about, even knowing language and culture comes in the way. And that was what she got: Akward comments about her body, akward looks about she trying, akward thoughts?? about her work. They must be proud about themselves...
Moon Child i completely agree! I have so much respect for Marie Kondo, especially for being on a comedy show in america and all the cultural things that make is more difficult for her.The way Ellen treats her in this segment is absolutely unacceptable and so rude. She needs to see the show of her and Stephen, that’s how you can be respectful, open-minded, while still making jokes
Marie did not get the respect she deserves in this segment. i know about her and her methods but never read the book or watched her show. however. she is someone who has changed so many lives using a very helpful method. but here it just seemed lik the host and everyone else alienated her.... because it’s so different. it’s a funny show but there were many serious moments and i think this moment didn’t have to be completely serious, but at least show some respect and understanding! it was completely condescending and honestly rude.
Why is the audience laughing? This women is here to teach and inspire people to lead a new lifestyle , if no one respects her, why waste her time and invite her to be on the show?
im a Japanese and i love Ellen but i feel a little bit offended by this :/ She didn't have to treat Marie like that. Ellen is low key rasist towards to asian.
+0808sumire Actually Ellen always acts dumb and pretend to be understand of every language not only asian languages, I saw she also did that with Spanish and Mexican in her show. So I think she's not racist, it may be her personality. If she doesn't like asian I think she wouldn't invite any asian to her show. By the way, I'm also asian.
I can understand why it might come across as that, and i kind of thought the same thing, but in "defense" of ellen (for lack of a better term), i think she might be approaching that from a comedic angle to create a dynamic between the "straight man" (kondo) and the "foil" (ellen). Kondo seems to be a very confident public speaker and seems used to audiences and television appearances, leaving ellen room to act a bit silly and timid. I think her logic is to give kondo the space she needs to essentially demonstrate and promote her technique and book while appearing to be a bit powerless and out of her (ellen's) element for comedic effect. This keeps the audience laughing (or cued to laugh), which makes it more engaging, in terms of predicable rhythm, to the viewer. So, i think that her perspective on the language thing was meant to be a place of "i'm overwhelmed for comedic effect" than "this person is an alien and talks funny." I also wouldn't be surprised if this was semi-rehearsed beforehand, just to iron these types of things out and to make sure the segment stays on beat. That being said, i see your point. We focus on microaggressions more than we used to, i think, and that's helped cast a critical light on american culture and the stereotypes and tropes, sometimes destructive, that we take for granted without realizing it. At the same time, i believe that this can lead to us reading into things a bit too much and adding meaning and prejudice where there is simple humor or, at worst, thoughtlessness. Suspicion in the mind makes ghosts in the dark, so to speak.
Not taking Marie seriously and that woman, whoever she is, saying “Is she cursing at me?” While Marie was talking in Japanese. Of course they are supposed to act funny, but in this case, it’s just pure ignorance, bordering on mockery.
Marie is now on Netflix with her new show "Tidying Up with Marie Kondo". Watch the episodes as she helps people who are overwhelmed with their stuff, or moving into adulthood, or who are expecting a child, or who are overworked parents, or who have had a spouse pass away, etc. Her "spark joy" is a sure magic method to sort their stuff as to keep it or remove it from their future. Watch her episodes as she brings joy into so many lives.
I binge watched all the episodes in one afternoon. It is so good. The episode with the lady who had lost her husband was really touching and emotional. And Marie had the utmost respect and consideration for her. It's a Very special episode.
I admire Marie's ability to keep a positive mindset and her energy up during this skit. You can really feel like no one was taking her seriously, that the fact she spoke Japanese and used a translator was apparently humorous, and that she was just a joke the entire time. Marie really is a saint.
Bro I feel so disgusted when Americans do that when meeting her (if you watch the show where she goes to peoples house to help tidy you'll understand what I mean)

I didn't interpret it as Ellen making fun of speaking a different language, it seemed to me like poking fun at the awkwardness of having an interpreter on set.
May look silly to some but her book really did change my life. I went through my entire home and ended up donating so much. I only kept things that truly meant something to me and on a deeper level it taught me to not put so much importance in owning random things but cherishing what I do have and what does have significance for me. A simple message but Marie tells it with so much sincerity. Love her!
i think what she mean is: to rise your expectation don't just choose things that you "kinda like", choose things that really lift you up this also means, if one has tonnes of things s/he "loves", then maybe one should start only keeping things that one "freaking loves", coz "loves" is no longer good enough this is at least what i get out of this msg am i right?
Very well put! While I was going through some things myself, I would grab things and instead if thinking and reasoning myself into keeping it, I focused on the "Spark Joy" aspect. Indeed a lot of things I had felt quite burdensome, because really I had been keeping them for the sake of keeping them, they didn't actually make me happy, and really I was never going to use them. It's a simple concept and was life changing for me!
Oh wow just realized the video is 2yrs old and I'm thinking it's recent because of the show. Well, I'm a 34yo human who had an issue with messes. It's not that I wanted to be messy but rather that I didn't KNOW how to organize, I would say I don't have that VISION where you look at a mess and KNOW what to do. I binge watched her show and not only have I picked up and cleaned about 80% of my apartment but I've also MAINTAINED IT. I LOVE the folding idea and as a person that is not a big consumerist I don't have many clothes but even then I was able to get rid of clothes that no longer sparked joy... I'll admit I kept about one or two t-shirts that didn't spark joy but I need some t-shirts just for my lazy days, I don't want to get rid of those to buy new ones, made no sense in my head. THANK YOU MARIE KONDO, even though you'll never see this comment. You changed my life and for that I am grateful.
Yes, Marie Kondo's book is one of my faves. She's inspired me this year to clean and really clean the emotional baggage off my chest. The thoughts of East and West are now finally merging.
I'm following the Konami method now and I'm still in shock to realize everything that I get to organize the way she taught is kept perfectly organized ever since! All my clothes are now in place. I've thrown away what I had to and already separated a bag for donations. Next step: SHOES!
If you want to see a respectful tv segment with Marie kondo, watch Stephen Colbert late Show video on UA-cam. He was very respectful, and it was obvious that she felt more comfortable.
I love Marie Kondo! Her book is so amazing and it's really handy to have for reference. I'll forget sometimes how to do something, (like how I should get rid of my clothes) and it'll say something along the lines of "don't focus on what you want to get rid of but rather what you want to keep."
I don’t really watch Stephen Colbert, but I watched his interview with Marie and it was phenomenal. He was extremely respectful and exuded a genuine curiosity for her organization methods and techniques.
@@brisbanerugby hhh to each his own i guess! learning methods differ indeed! personally i picked it up unconsciously through anime, study well mate "gambattene" and have a good one !
2 years later and the world is eating off Marie’s petite hand. Im so happy to see that even though she got humiliation on this segment by Ellen and other that she is actually not only being taken seriously in 2019 but is making positive joyful impacts on many lives. Who has the last laugh now
Her method makes perfect sense to anyone from an eastern culture , im sure. The idea of thanking your space, your possessions and general gratitude is very much a part of our life and taught to us growing up. And while i understand these things might be new to someone in west, i wish they wouldnt mock it. Marie however, takes it very sportingly.
No wonder i saw so many youtubers use konmari method. Or atleast they kept appearing on my recommendation since last year. Apparently she really grew up biggg.. i thought it was coincidence that i saw her method by many youtubers amd then BAM she had her own show in america.. I like her tbh. She can actually change the world by changing peoples lifes/view/mindset. 👌
I believe that Marie Kondo will be doing this tidying up thing even when nobody is watching. Even when she is not promoting her books or stand a chance to earn millions. I think she is wired this way. Unique and utterly interesting.
Marie Kondo, is such a beautiful person, just watching her charismatic personality melts my heart. It's very sad to see her methods and culture being ridiculed like that...
After reading one of her books, I was able to get rid of stuff that I should've gotten rid of a long time ago, but this time with less guilt and more of a liberating feeling.
The interpreter should be standing where the woman in the blue dress is. It would fix a lot of communication issues. Not sure how to fix the snarky condescension they were throwing her way, though.
Ellen, when was the last time you folded clothes? I hope sometimes. I get that you showed the difference of how we are taught to fold and how you fold. I am going to try it with my napkins and towels drawer today. I call it sorting. I have never taken my books out and tried that with my books. My books are research and not only novels. Thanks Ellen for having this show and being real.
Why does it not occur to people that Ellen is more poking fun at herself than anything? And I honestly could be wrong about this, but Marie didn't appear to be showing any sign of stress in her body language. She appeared quite relaxed and was laughing at Ellen. I'm pretty sure she got it and knew Ellen was poking fun at herself. And did you not see the look of amazement on Ellen's face? People are so quick to judge.
I wonder if Marie gets annoyed with people not taking it seriously in the States when she does a tv show segment? Of course, it's polite to not show your annoyance or gossip about it... I get this vibe that people are a little disrespectful when they have her on shows and you can tell they think its too over the top or ridiculous. If you have her on your shows, give her ways an honest chance and you might see why it benefits the process of tidying. Plus if you really read her books, mostly she wants it to be joyful for you, so if something works better for you that is a little different, she wants you to do it that way. :) I love Ellen and realize it's supposed to be a funny show, but if you're trying to endorse an author, you don't make them feel like their methods are really weird to you and too extreme. You say, "Wow! This actually makes sense and is beneficial!"
I've bought both books, organised my home the way she told and never looked back. Tidying and having a close look at your belongings are very therapeutic.
As much as I love Ellen -- I really appreciated how Stephen Colbert handled the communication gap rather than Ellen. It's very subtle, but he was able to be comedic (while still respectful) and take her seriously all at the same time.
this book changed my life. alot of people think it's stupid to feel joy with material things. but in all honesty it's so worth it to take care of your stuff. it definitely is life changing. I will admit i relapsed once , but it was sooo easy to get back on track.

this is at least what i get out of this msg
am i right?
yes! well said!
Yes, you are completely right Fruity Kitchen!
I read Marie's book last year and spent the last half on 2018 decluttering my entire house, this method is a life changer. Give it a try!
I hope I'll get a job that I can love to do like that woman
Marie's doing her best at explaining her methods even through the language and culture barrier and they're just laughing at her...
Japanese is one of the most beautiful languages ever.
Yes, Marie Kondo's book is one of my faves. She's inspired me this year to clean and really clean the emotional baggage off my chest. The thoughts of East and West are now finally merging.
The audience is so annoying
Marie is very graceful. She is inspiring millions I'm sure with methods. Good for her and good for us too.
Ellen made fun of her book before in an old video. Her method really is effective!
+Aaron Domanais I know! Her book is a bestseller and people swear by her method, Ellen should have been more respectful.
What is the book about ?
+Kszabus What is the book about ?
+NA It is about decluttering and organizing.
Now I want to learn Japanese, sounds so soothing and calm
it is true. traveling in japan is like magic, listening to the voices
I really loved Marie's first book, it sure changed the way I live
Marie Kondo saved my sanity. As soon as I adopted her techniques, a stress lifted.
I'm following the Konami method now and I'm still in shock to realize everything that I get to organize the way she taught is kept perfectly organized ever since! All my clothes are now in place. I've thrown away what I had to and already separated a bag for donations. Next step: SHOES!
Konmari*
I could understand her! Glad my Japanese studying is paying off!
sasuga ! masaka anime no koto wo suki deshoo ka ?
I couldn't. Back to the books, I guess.
@@mohamedlalioui8757 I don't particularly enjoy cartoons, however, Ms Kondo spoke clear and concise Nihongo.
@@brisbanerugby hhh to each his own i guess! learning methods differ indeed! personally i picked it up unconsciously through anime, study well mate "gambattene" and have a good one !
congrats
I can't stand Ellen here...
The folks in the US are so rude
2 years later and the world is eating off Marie’s petite hand. Im so happy to see that even though she got humiliation on this segment by Ellen and other that she is actually not only being taken seriously in 2019 but is making positive joyful impacts on many lives. Who has the last laugh now
Ellen has always been quite patronizing... not to mention she removed the comments in that other video 💀
I think Ellen should do a followup explaining the method properly. This method could help a lot of people.
Diana Martin just watch her show on Netflix is called Tidy Up with Marie
Her method makes perfect sense to anyone from an eastern culture , im sure. The idea of thanking your space, your possessions and general gratitude is very much a part of our life and taught to us growing up. And while i understand these things might be new to someone in west, i wish they wouldnt mock it. Marie however, takes it very sportingly.
This video inspires me to fold my clothes .Thanks tiny human :)
oooooh wow
*tidy
I knew what I did when I wrote tiny ;) So chill ppl :P
You tell me! I saw a demonstration of her folding method this evening and I spent like 2 hours refolding all of my T-shirts XD
the clothes folding is actually such a good tip. OMG. My closet always ends in up a mess because I stack my clothes on top of each other.
I’m never folding my clothes any other way because of this woman!
Her voice and way of talking was so sooting and calm love that!
I did Marie kondo method...THE BEST OF THE BESTEST!! Life changing! Both the folding and sparking joy are perfect
That was painful to watch, they shouldn't have invited her if they don't respect her. And what was the audience constantly laughing for? Cringy!
i just lov marie.......her energy and attitude is just so uplifting and positive.........
I found Marie more cute than funny, I don't know if I'm on my own with this one
No wonder i saw so many youtubers use konmari method. Or atleast they kept appearing on my recommendation since last year. Apparently she really grew up biggg.. i thought it was coincidence that i saw her method by many youtubers amd then BAM she had her own show in america.. I like her tbh. She can actually change the world by changing peoples lifes/view/mindset. 👌
I literally just bought the book right after i finished watching this video!!!
Yes!!! She seems like she really knows what she's talking about!
Konmari method has really started to change my lifestyle!
Watch Ellie Kemper at the beginning ahha she constantly keeps looking in the monitors and fixing her posture 😂😂😂
*Marie is teaching them how to fold correctly*
The audience: Hahahahahahahahahahahaha
Ellen calm down! You don't speak every language
Marie is so cute I can't ^-^
just found out about her an hour ago and I already feel like this is going to improve my life a lot
Yes make fun of her. Guess who has her own show now!
japanese is the happiest language, i felt so good just listening to her talk
See this is why i love Japan their so adorable and funny
Japan has a dark side
Firstly Lasty Hahah true but i still think their adorable :P
DeadSilent Gaming *They're. I don't mean to be a grammar nazi but you've made that error twice now :P
The first step to recovery is admitting you have a problem.
They're *
After reading one of her books, I was able to get rid of stuff that I should've gotten rid of a long time ago, but this time with less guilt and more of a liberating feeling.
I feel like Ellen is just plain rude with a lot of her interviews, especially with foreign people. It’s frustrating and insensitive.
The interpreter should be standing where the woman in the blue dress is. It would fix a lot of communication issues. Not sure how to fix the snarky condescension they were throwing her way, though.
Marie seems so sweet!
Thanks Ellen for having this show and being real.
ellie putting a kimmy touch to it....
yess😂😂
こんまりさん、アメリカ進出してたなんて!
確かに、片付けは万国共通、万人共通のモンダイだもんね。どこにでも需要はある!
I didn't know that now Konmari expand her business in America!
It's amazing!
K&D T でもこれは、内容が分かるとちょっと悲しい動画ですね…残念です
She has heels on ^^
+Emilia Podstawka where are you from?

I love this system, I have been organizing my drawers and folding my clothes to stand up for a couple years now :)
Now I am folding my tshirts again. Thanks Ellen and Marie!!
Omg Ellens facial expression when she talked in Japanese lololol
+laila1989ism shes like
"what the fuck are you saying" but looks like she knows what shes talking about XD
I love Marie's voice at 1:31 when she talks in English. It's so . . . posh and the accent is so nice
Why bother having her there if you're not going to take it seriously?
"Is she cursing me?"😂😂
I'm holding my dog and it sparks joy. I can't throw it away.
Rofl :)
This video proves the point that she has a mean streak as some of her staffers complain.
I love Ellen and realize it's supposed to be a funny show, but if you're trying to endorse an author, you don't make them feel like their methods are really weird to you and too extreme. You say, "Wow! This actually makes sense and is beneficial!"
I really enjoyed this short episode!!!! Ellen you can do it!!! just spark joy LOL
I am so going to buy the book
Libraries carry it as well.
I literally have no idea what this video was about haha love you Ellen
