I love how Paul doesn't instantly discard options like the .22. He actually does the testing, and methodically goes through the actual results. This is the most informative, sane, and genuinely beneficial gun channel on UA-cam. Keep up the great work!

Some people carry .22lr. for two reasons. 1)They can really shoot good with precision. 2) FBI statistics showed a lot of "unlucky recipients" underestimated this caliber.

    • @royrogers3624
      @royrogers3624 2 роки тому

The fbi statistics bit is extremely stupid
Fbi statistics say alot of things how many people get shot and killed by it has nothing to do with effectiveness
Reality is if you have 2 projectiles 1 120ish moving 1100 to 1400 fps and 1 significantly smaller weighing 30ish gr moving the same velocity which one is more powerful?
Then take into account that the 9mm is still factually not that powerful compared to most rifle cartridges and have in many cases injured but not killed and just as commonly they are killed later in some cases taking a dozen rounds before running g off into the sunset and passing out from blood lose
To be clear the 120ish gr is the 9mm
The reality is the 22 lr is a bullet moving at around the speed of sound air rifles can be just as and in some cases more powerful
So the "oh muh 22 gets dang ol underestimated plenty of them dang ol people died from it" is just as stupid as people who claim its not a threat
Its a projectile moving the speed of sound (give or take) to be honest a rock throw hard enough is lethal hell try a baseball

There's a lot better rounds that have better accuracy. Accuracy means nothing when it won't stop the person from retaliating, nor even stop the person if you give it a week's time.
FBI statistics show that only around 4% of deaths by gunshot were to .22 LR (of course popularity plays a big factor in this, but .22 LR is obviously an _extremely_ popular cartridge)

Paul. In 1976 I was shot in the center chest with a .22 hollow point.... fight was OVER. If you've never taken a bullet the chest.... Here's what happens. You hear the "POP", you hear a ringing in your ears then everything goes into slow motion and I mean SLOW MOTION. You can hear voices but you can't understand what they're saying.
I was blessed enough that the bullet went between my ribs in the front, passed through my lung and went between my ribs upon exit. It took 40 minutes for the ambulance to get to me. I made peace with God as I lay on the ground. I knew I was going to die. The bullet went through my left lung, barley missing my heart. My left lung filled up with blood and i couldn't breathe
I was clinically dead for 14 hours with a blood pressure of 60 over zero but God saved me. It makes NO difference WHAT you shot with. When you're shot..... You're SHOT. My carry gun is a Ruger SR 22.
    God Bless you Brother.

There is a big anti-gun movement going on starting in South Florida and They want to get a ban on semi automatic weapons, including handguns. And if the demo rats get their way in the house their going to implement that 7115 bill. you've got to read into that bill very closely because most people think it's just a ban on buying parts for 3D weapons but it is not they are literally trying to get rid of AR-15 lowers and any parts for them. I just bought my first handgun ever a few months ago. A Glock 23 gen 3 and I really like it. But my girlfriend has carpal tunnel and such. She just couldn't handle the recoil for more than a few rounds at the range. My dad let me borrow some guns my grandfather had, a la fury 25 piece of crap and a 38 special snub nose. I figured the snub nose would be the way to go but the grip was to small and had worse recoil than the 23. So I we rented a couple of 380s from the range and she really liked the Sig but my wallet didn't :p. Ended up picking up a Smith and Wesson bodyguard with a laser through a trade. One of the worst experiences we had because of that awful trigger. And we really wanted to like it because of the laser. So I traded that for a M&P 15-22 which I love. So then the range let us try a M&P 22 compact. We both loved that little pistol and ended up buying that. It's like a different world and now she's asking me if we can go to the range :D. Honestly, as I don't have much experience with guns the "stopping power" and "penetration" has worried me with her planning on using the 22 as her primary weapon. But I kept telling myself she can get 5 shots off in a tight group in half the time I can do it with the glock. But after seeing how many innocent watermelons you killed I feel like I've got more peace of mind. Thanks for helping me feel safer with her choice. Oh and one last thing. . . #watermelonlivesmatter

Hey Paul I've learned lots from your excellent and scientific videos. As a houndsman,I've taken many raccoons, some way up a tall tree. Some with a handgun, most with a rifle. My conclusions? Never shoot a raccoon with a 22 short. It simply isn't a lethal enough round to be humane or effective. Secondly, the solid 40 grain roundnose with good velocity is by far the most deadly on racoon sized animals and up. Now for squirrel the hollow points are highly effective if you don't mind losing a small amount of meat, due to a bigger hole. Better than having injured squirrels escape. Of course 40 gr solids are fine on squirrels if you can make head shots. When I keep a 22 lr gun around for self defense,it is always loaded with 40 grain solid round nose ammo.

".....it is NOT to be underestimated" Balistically speaking, in one form or another, the .22lr's ability to kill almost anything that moves is now a matter of indisputable historical record. I think we need to move the .22lr debate from the question of "LETHALITY" to one of "CONSISTENCY". We need to stop asking "CAN IT?" and focus on "WILL IT?" Only time and technological advances in overall rimfire design can answer that question. In the mean time, it remains an outstanding small/medium game hunting and practice option. A far as self defense, why potentially risk your life when there exists a statistically superior and more consistent option of centerfire. LONG LIVE THE 22LR! Paul I'm a long time viewer and I love what you do with your videos and the knowledge that you bring to the table. I agree that .22, .22lr, and .22 wmr can be very anemic as a self defense round out of a mouse gun. I personally had a good friend who was shot with a 22 wmr out of a snub nose revolver (at close range) and it went in his right pec, hit his scapula and bouned laterally through his lungs and heart, hit a rib (slightly fractured it) before stopping in his spine. He is alive today and that bullet is still in his spine. it may have been a "1 in a million" occurrence but he nearly died twice during surgery. now that being said (lol) I hope people will go with a more powerful cartridge for self defense but I'll never underestimate the mighty .22. Thank you for your videos and your Shatner-esque pauses, because who doesn't love Bill Shatner and Paul Harrell?

Back in 91’ When I was working in an AZ level one trauma center we had a 19 year old come male walk in with his buddies with a gun shot wound (GSW). When we hear GSW it usually over the radio by an inbound bus and we start prepping for the worse. In this case, admitting calls us and tells we have a GSW in the lobby. It was a Friday night around 11 PM.
If you ever had to go to the ER because you think your health condition is an emergency and you are gonna die rapidly, 9 out of 10 times the ER staff thinks differently. In reality you will probably go through a couple of feeding times or get the privilege of watching the visual aspect of the earth making a complete revolution on its axis.
I hear GSW in the lobby and this numb nut instantly jumps to the front of the line. No waiting for the sunrise for him. I rush a gurney to the lobby and was kinda confused as the kid was alert, orientated to the point of joking with his buddies and wait for it ....intoxicated...
I do a quick assessment, see no blood, brain matter, CSF, sucking noises, etc. I thought this was a joke. I asked where he was shot, with what caliber and how.
The twatwaffle was initially very adamant that the new .22 pistol “went off by itself” while resting quietly on the table as they shot” the proverbial sh$t.
In reality this rumpleforeskin reached over and grabbed the barrel of the pistol to look at it. As he pulled the barrel forward it was kinda like a reverse pullrack (one word) while his buddy finger was on the trigger. It went bang.
Now the interesting thing about this nowhere near non lethal GSW is that the .22 long round entered right at the meaty portion of his right thumb circled three times around his forearm in a spiral fashion up his forearm where the bullet stopped about a half inch distal of the antecubital area of the elbow (the bend where they usually draw blood) the entire wound track was in only in the skin layer. It left a raised continuous tunnel that resembled a termite tunnel or A long mole trench. There was virtually no blood and no broken bones, etc. All it took was a quick tiny slice with as scalpel directly over the the bullet, a little squeeze and that little piece of lead popped right out just like a pus filled white head pimple 2 days past it’s prime.
All GSW’s have to be reported to the police. This was in a Phoenix suburb that rarely had a gun deaths or injuries. It was a relatively slow night in the ER and even slower in the city.
The first police officer came to investigate and he called his a fellow cop and over a few hours I estimate that probably another 20 or so cops came to take a peek at this extremely interesting and one of a kind bullet wound.

I own a 22RF pistol, a Ruger pre-Mark standard auto, and I have it within reach most of the time at home. (Like right now, actually.) It is certainly NOT what I would lean toward for a CCW, it does have it's endearing points, one of those being the reason I keep it handy at home. The overall length and so on is hardly a problem here, and the relatively low power is offset by one of those "endearing qualities" I referred to. I've owned this gun since the early 1980's (1983 or '84) and was actually given to me by my stepfather who purchased it new in 1968. He said it had never failed to function perfectly, and in the many years I've been shooting it I can say it has performed flawlessly. THAT is a good reason to rely on it in my opinion.
In addition to the reliability issue, this has always been the most accurate shooting handgun IN MY HANDS that I have ever encountered. This is another of those endearing qualities. Yes, there are many handguns more powerful, and I own some. Still, when you need it most, the dependability and accuracy are serious considerations. Just my 2 cents...

I read a police report where a dirtbag ambushed a cop with a .22 single action revolver, and killed him instantly. And there was an article in SWAT magazine a few years ago about a bad guy in a furious gunfight who was shot 17 times with 40 cal and .556, fought the cops as they handcuffed him, but bled out at the hospital. Shot placement is everything, and that's something a lot of "internet gun experts" don't want to admit to because they think it's a challenge to the thousands of dollars worth of training they took or the latest-and-greatest "space gun" they just bought. No, it isn't. It's about putting that lead suppository to where it needs to be to cure the situation.

The thing I love about the Stinger as a concealed carry round is that the muzzle flash makes it look like a much bigger caliber and, in a lot of cases, that's enough to deter an assailant.
The thing that really solidified my decision to choose the .22lr (in the form of a Ruger SR22) over the .380 (from a M&P Shield) is the simple fact that if I'm in a position to where I have to use my weapon and I panic, if I can't hit them with 15+1 .22 bullets, then I'm surely not going to hit them with a measly 8 .380 rounds. And from what I've seen, the difference in internal damage is minimal.

I also have three revolvers in .22 Magnum that I use from time to time, especially as a backup to my primary carry piece. just came across your video. retired Police here. Whenever I had a shooting victim I would speak to the ER Dr. as to his prognosis etc. I ended up befriending the head Dr. in ER. We ended up getting up in a long conversation about bullet wounds etc. I reminded him of one case I had had. I responded to a gunshot victim. He was laying on his side really pissed and embarrassed he got shot in the ass by the boyfriend of a girl he was 'visiting' at the time. We sat there talking, waiting for EMS to respond, they transported him, he looked fine for the five to ten minutes while we spoke. It was end of shift for me, passed it on. I always wanted to know what happened to the guy shot in the ass. Here is where I just sat and listened in shock as to the numerous stories I was told. The guy got shot in the butt by a 22 cal rimfire. The bullet was found to have hit the pelvic girdle, bounced around then up into the thoracic cavity. Every vital organ was perforated at least once by that tiny bullet. There were so many holes that they could not find nor close them all , he expired from being butt shot. My response, 'what?'. The Dr. explained the breakdown of what he found, thus the brief bing bang bing narrative above. He could see my look of 'say what ' so he offered more examples. Lots of examples. My next favorite , a fmj 45acp out of a pistol at point blank range, pierced lung, stood there talking to me leaning up against the wall in the house really pissed and drunk. 303 british FMJ at point blank range in a motel room, he along with the 45acp guy survived , just with a hole front and back. Thought I would add these anecdotes for review.

Cool story, but most other times, the .22LR wouldn't stop the threat and they'll light you up if they were also armed. And you both may die. If he had 9mm or something, then you'll probably die first while he may die later by your .22's...plus whoever else in your family that he decided to shoot also. Ever shot anyone while on duty? Most cops never even shot anyone nor got shot at. If not, then it's just mostly theory. And in theory, it's just a horrible idea to carry a .22 for SD.

Years ago, I read a magazine article, (you, younger folks may not realize that before the internet gun mags and tabloids were we had; we couldn't just say "I read it on the internet and have everybody know it was true), written by Massad Ayoob that recounted the story of a sixty-something year-old woman caught alone by several terrorists on her farm during the Mau Mau uprising.
They had a collection of pistols and rifles and she had a Colt Woodsman. She knew the layout of her farm buildings and had good common sense. They didn't. They split up and she ambushed each one of them and put a round in their head as they came around one corner or another.
Massad's question was how much deader would any one of them been if she had had a .44 Magnum? (Remember, both the magazine article and the original story were long before any such thing as .454 Casull, .500 S&W, etc)

Certainly a valid point, but I would rather be using more than the bare minimum with my life on the line.

I would say that nobody (with half a brain) would argue the killing ability of a 22lr. But as for stopping an attack with shock effect? if my life is on the line I want a minimum of 380. 9mm or 357 even better. but not many people have faced that actual situation. I have once. for about 15 seconds. My pocket 380 saved me and my wife form an attack by two huge dogs. But in retrospect I wish I had had my 9mm or 45. But...the 380 worked wonders. I am glad, however, that I was not carrying my 22 wmr that day.

I remember growing up we had a 22lr revolver for home defense. That's all we had and we trusted our lives on that thing, we had it loaded with Winchester cheap bulk ammo. Grew up shooting that revolver very well and as I grew older I started taking it out rabbit hunting. I gotta say I been in love with 22s and respected that round more and more.

As always, good, honest, common sense testing and great results! Paul, you should try this with CCI's new 40-grain Mini-Mag segmented hollow point! Cool fact about this little round- the velocity and point of impact is exactly the same as their solid 40-grain Mini-Mag, so one could stagger the rounds in the magazine (or cylinder) if used for self defense.

Great demonstration! I’m not advocating the use of 22lr over other calibers for defensive weapons. BUT my wife and two early teenage kids love the 22s. We have several larger caliber rifles and pistols but the one they like the most and are most proficient with is ten inch AR15 pistol equipped with a CMMG 22 conversion kit, a brace, red dot and light/laser combo. Even my squeamish daughter is deadly with it. We keep it loaded with CCI Stingers and it is their go-to weapon of choice for them when I’m not home. My logic is that a hit (or several) with a 22 beats a miss with a 44 magnum.

I really enjoyed watching this video. Although I do not carry or own a .22 cal. pistol, I do agree that it would not be a bad choice for a carry gun. Most people believe that .22 (LR) is such a small bullet that it would not be effective. However, I disagree.
Again, your video was great! It definitely made the clear point that a .22lr can be effective for self defense situation.
    Thanks.

Jay Guns I've read that the mob uses .22LR for a lot of their executions. Lots of zinging around inside the skull and not so loud. Yuck.
