@@1972myc Ugh, don't watch the Paris one, J n C. It's a 1997 CGI crapfest that isn't really a sequel, but a name ripoff. It doesn't even relate to the London one as far as I recalled. CGI in 97 was MANY times worse than it is now. You would at least know for certain how well 1981 practical makeup FX from Rick Baker holds up to 1997 CGI if you were to ever watch AW in Paris. If they could do the same quality of work in today's movies that guys like Baker and Rob Bottin did in the 80s, there would be a lot of improved movies from the past 20+ years.
John Landis (one of my all time favorite directors, and this is also one of my favorite movies of all time) made this movie (and like you've mentioned it, ''Jack'' looks like one of the zombies in Michael Jackson's ''Thriller''), directed also ''Thriller'', and the special make-up effects were also done by Rick Baker. Btw, you actually look like a young John Landis. Greetings from the Netherlands.
@@peterengelen2794 I love Landis' stuff too. Animal House, Blues Bros, AWIL, Trading Places, Three Amigos!, Coming To America. Three Amigos is the only one I got to see at the actual movies, tho. Any rate, also love Twilight Zone: The Movie (1983). The OP should see that, too, so they can learn how Landis got into trouble for killing 3 people on set. He pushed the envelope w/ his car and vehicle scenes in Blues Bros and AWIL and the helicopter in TZ decapitated 3 actors including 2 children. Spielberg, George Miller of Mad Max fame, and Joe Dante of The Howling/Gremlins fame did the other segments.
This film is a classic. It is now 40 years old and it STILL has the best werewolf transformation ever put on screen. Amazing to think that with today's CGI technology, this is still the best werewolf effects.
Tranformations in movies have become a superpower of sorts. It's basically variations of morphing. The reason why the transformation is so good in this movie is because it slows it down to the point where you realize just how painful and horrifying it must be in real life to have your skeletal system/anatomy, etc... change.
Rick Baker is a God of practical spfx.
They were gelatin and none of it has survived the years, but damn is it cool.
It's not amazing. CGI only does inanimate objects right. People and animals will always be better when done practically. There's a quality to living organisms that computer effects just cannot replicate without looking fake.
@@tonydebruin1052 I think we'll get to a point where it's VERY hard to tell that it's a CGI element. Human faces will be the final hurdle. Once that's nailed, we're there. Just look how far it's come in a few decades. It will get there.
Baker wanted to do a transformation using both practical & cgi effects. A shame no one would give him the chance before he retired.
This is actually the pinnacle of horror and horror special effects. It’s weird that people say it was “good for its time”. Horror effects have NOT evolved past this. Also the reason that the effects look similar to Thriller is because Michael Jackson saw this film and wanted this team (John Landis and Rick Baker) to direct it. There is a sequel, and it is shit. Glad y’all loved the film!

That Wolf howl is insane. Definitely the best I've ever heard. Up there with the Alien scream in The Thing.
The howl is certainly the stuff of nightmares. Imagine being out in the countryside and you heard that in the dead of night. It would be absolutely terrifying.

Michael Jackson chose John Landis to direct his "Thriller" video (along with make-up artist Rick Baker) because of their work on this movie.
John Landis is also seen in the Piccadilly Sq sequence; he’s the guy who gets knocked through the window by the car.

The guy at the chess table that laughs from hearing the Alamo joke is the late great comedy legend Rik Mayall who was known in shows like The Young Ones and Bottom.
Much-missed Rik Mayall. Probably known more internationally in cult fave 'Drop Dead Fred' but yeah in the UK he's a legend of many a fantastic comedic performance. My fave has always been his two incarnations of Flashheart in the classic Blackadder series. :)

I like that the dog is like "What are you guys watching? I want some cuddles." I wish they did a prequel to this to see how the people in the Slaughtered Lamb got involved with the curse that led them to putting the pentagram on the wall to protect them from the werewolf.
I just thought it was apropos; watching an iconic werewolf movie with a very large canid on the couch.
My impression is that it is somehow tied to the area specifically. Like a cursed area.

Apart from the wolf transformation what is also remarkable is that Piccadilly Circus in the West End of London was a busy road junction and the film makers had literally only hours to set up and film the chaos before the police reopened Piccadilly.
My personal favorite, truly fantastic film. Scary, funny, romantic touch, still the undefeated transformation scene put on screen.
I loved all of it. The comedy mixed with the serious tone. The practical effects 👌. I need merchandise now.
40 years have passed since this movie was made, and I _STILL_ haven't seen a transformation scene that beats this one. I'm so glad you enjoyed it. It's my all-time favorite movie. I've seen it eleventeen times.(that's _my_ way of saying a _LOT_ ).

It's funny how the times have changed.
When Jack gets attacked ( 6:18 )......David acts as we all would in most part. It's only moonlit night, allot darker than the scene in the movie, and the fear is overtaking your thoughts.
I saw this in 81, everyone in the theater was yelling "Run" at David.....he did. When he stopped and said "Jack", turned around.....we all went "NO you idiot, he's gone" LOL
Oh the times, they so have turned around.
Result......David turned around and got attacked, and got turned into a werewolf killing 6 innocent victims, responsible for several others at Piccadilly Circus and thus was eventually killed himself.
Moral....... If a massive crazed beast attacks your friend.....run and get help. You'll just get messed up/killed as well.

For a really unusual take on the werewolf genre, 'Ginger Snaps' would be on the top of my list.

Apparently audiences seeing the film at the theater cheered during the now famous transformation scene. 40 years later, that reaction still fits!
The filmmakers had to get very special permission to film the Piccadilly scene as movies weren't allowed to shoot there.
The actor from the US embassy, is Frank Oz who did the voice of Fozzie Bear and Yoda among others.

Fun Fact: the village that doubled as East Proctor was intact in Wales; not Northern England. Also the first werewolf attack was in fact filmed in the grounds of Windsor Castle.
as a fan of werewolf movies, this movie is a very good and very unique feature... most werewolves in these movies are wolfmen but this is a werewolf (quadrapedal, more wolf like than man like) and that is what makes this transformation so good, it's sudden, it's long lasting and it is visceral: you can hear it, see it and feel it, the body transforms (not just hair and teeth but legs, hands, spine, face all change, grow, reshape and it sounds painful)

I was 11 years old in 1981 when this film came out and I "think" I first saw it when I was 12 or 13. This is easily one of my favourite horror films along with The Thing and Alien. It uses the old Werewolf tropes with a modern twist. The practical effects were the best back then!
It's funny- as a kid I never thought that the doctor or police inspector were in on the conspiracy with the towns folk to keep the secret. Never occurred to me but I can see how you might think that given the way they immediately dismissed everything.
I also think I remember the Naz* werewolves were available as a wearable Halloween mask sold in the 80s.

20:16 Some UK insight: if we're going to the "bathroom" and it's a public restroom, we call that the toilets. Or if the toilet is in a separate room, we'd call that room the toilet. And if we're going into any bathroom for that specific purpose, we usually say "Going to the toilet". But the room in someone's home with a bath or shower in is called 'the bathroom' in Britain as well. :)

You guys might like one of my favorite movies - "After Hours". It stars Griffin Dunne (who played Jack) and was directed by Martin Scorsese. And if you've ever wondered if Scorsese can do comedy...well, give it a try!
The full moon lasts for three days in werewolf movies. You guys should watch "The Howling", which came out at about the same time, for another great example of old school CGI-free werewolf effects.
Yeah The Howling's good too. Out of the two I still prefer American Werewolf mainly because I care more about the characters (a big plus for me in any horror movie is making the characters actually likable so I give a damn about what happens to them unlike the many, many obnoxious teenagers in countless slasher movies) but yep The Howling is plenty fine too. :)

Oh my god, congratulations! Your reaction at the end is priceless. And boy, do we know how you feel! I know I remember the first time I saw this movie, late at night on cable, about a year after it came out. Man oh man. I saw "All That Jazz" and "A Clockwork Orange" one night as a double feature, which literally paralyzed me on the couch for five hours. And then I saw "An American Werewolf In London" right around the same time, like a week later. All three of those movies end with a wtf feeling, with ironic music playing....and us all feeling very disturbed!
The way you handled the long love scene is HILARIOUS. I'm subscribing just for that!

PS: Can I throw out two horror titles that I'm always searching on? The 1978 version of Invasion Of The Body Snatchers. Creepshow (1983), written by Stephen King and directed by George Romero. Those two make great reaction videos, just as good as these, and they share a one-of-a-kind quality with this werewolf movie, great cinematography, fantastic effects, great script, humor and comedy (in "Creepshow") and, most importantly, a trippy vibe! Both make great reaction videos, especially Invasion Of The Body Snatchers. One of those movies there can never be enough reaction videos for. Like "An American Werewolf In London"! Thanks guys!

Sad thing re: Griffin Dunne. His sister Dominique Dunne was an actress then as well. She was the oldest sister in Poltergeist 1 if you've ever seen it. You should, btw, ANY Spielberg production from then is so basic that they assign it in HS curriculums. Anyway, she was murdered by her ex BF sleezeball in 1982 while she was practicing lines w/ a male actor at her house. Her ex comes up and she goes outside to talk to him and he strangles her on the lawn and the coward inside did nothing to even check to see if she was all right. He heard noises outside, but never investigated. She died at only 22 and only a year after Griffin was in AWIL.
This is a 4-Star movie you guys. A classic.😀 This won the Oscar for special effects/makeup. that year.
I always use the makeup in this film to talk about what practical effects can be in my media class.

Seriously, this was the first film to win the first official Best Makeup Oscar (they did not hand it out every year before this came out; afterwards, they made it official).

If you loved it can you imagine being an 11 year old watching this on VHS with a group of friends. It's been in my memory ever since. We even talked about it with our school teacher because it was ground breaking.
The first time I saw him go from reading the book to transforming I thought he was visually dying of boredom 😆, good reaction btw ✌🏻

One thing that you didn't notice about before he transformed, is that David left the door open. I think he did it on a subconscious level so the wolf could get out.
Oh see I thought he left it open for fear of getting locked out again because that had already happened and he had to climb through the window. You could be right though I didn't think of that!

Please note also that David is never hungry. I think that's subconscious, as well. The curse makes sure that he doesn't eat so that when the wolf DOES come out, it's starved and hungry for blood.
David also holds a knife to his wrist yet doesn't kill himself. Could be for many reasons BUT maybe it's because human beings are the only ones who commit suicide, animals don't. Maybe the curse, the need for survival, works on his mind and he just CAN NOT kill himself.
Why didn't the people of East Proctor hunt down the wolf and kill it? Ending this nightmare? Maybe they can't. Small town and only ONE DUDE is missing every full moon? Hmm...I think BOB is the werewolf! Get him! Surely they knew who it was but maybe killing a werewolf spreads the curse to whoever is closest, or something like that. The best they could do is just let the wolf roam every full moon and everyone stay indoors and safe.
The curse is quite tenacious.
@@jondavidtheauthor6318 I've always had the thought that the dreams David was having were symptoms of the werewolf curse as if the wolf in him was slowly taking over mentally before taking over physically.
I noticed that the dreams would get worse each time. First it would be just running through the woods, then savagely killing a deer, then seeing himself on a hospital bed with yellow eyes and sharp teeth and then finally seeing his family getting killed by demonic nazis with wolf like facial features.

John Landis was inspired by an actual vacation he took in college. While and his friends were backpacking across Europe; Where they witnessed an actual funeral ceremony in Romania.
They thought it was quite odd that they buried the corpse upside down vertically.
Landis asked why did they do it and was told to prevent the dead from clawing from the grave.
He thought that all these old superstitions are absolutely ridiculous in today's modern age....... but, WHAT IF??

On the moors they are told to stick to the roads, as if that would protect them. But in London, David as the werewolf can travel along roads, pavements and the London underground.
Jenny Agutter was in an excellent 1976 movie with Michael York, one of my childhood favorites, called “Logan’s Run.” It’s a utopian/dystopian future where a computer controlled city of people live in a state of apathy and pleasure, but nobody can live past 30, and believe they renew in a murderous ritual called Carousel. Its special effects are kind of dated, but the action and story is excellent. I recommend it if you can find it.
Best Werewolf film ever and in my top six films of all time. Brilliant on every level.
1. If you go to Italy stay away from Naples. It's the armpit of Europe.
2. The doctor called him a madman because that's what he was told.
3. Nothing wrong with conserving water.
4. Full moons last more than one day/night. Roughly 4 nights.
5. Try getting a gun in England. The cops don't even use them unless it's very important..
6. Jenny Agutter Played in another outstanding SiFi movie called "Logan's Run"
7. There's "An American Warewolf in Paris" but it's not worth the effort.
My friend has been to that pub . Inside setup is different but the outside looks the same.

Now that you've seen the special effects in this 1981 gem, you should continue with The Howling.
Another werewolf gem that gets overlooked every Halloween it seems.
The Howling effects were done by An American Werewolf Rick Baker's protege Rob Bottin, only 21 at the time.
It also features some of the most graphic transformations seen in movies at that time.
Glad I got to see them in the theater back in the day, man.....think I was just 20 then. Ugh, time flies way tooooo fast.

I love that special effects makeup. Same man who went on to apply his skills to Michael Jackson's Thriller short film. Rick Baker is a damn GENIUS.
They went real old school on the werewolf, the idea of using siver is actually pretty moder as far a lore goes. The producer went with the original concept of a animal on all fours and nothing special to kill it.

Panic is an instinct. An unconscious mechanism that serves self-preservation. None of us have control over it. You can train to delay the moment, but for all of us there comes a point when panic takes over. As if your conscious self is being put in front of its own door and the panic closes the door with the words: "Ok, we'll take over from now on. Now it's about survival. You just be quiet and only return to the control room when it's safe!"

The transformation scene is perfect. The actual werewolf looks a bit rough, but the transformation scene has never been matched.
OK. Since David couldn't bring himself to kill himself, it's likely that he lunged at Alex so that the police could kill him. Remember, when Alex told David that she loved him, David seemingly went back to his human consciousness for a second and decided to have the gunmen to end his life for him.

As a person from North east England, the thing I like about this movie is that In Northern England (and scotland) we have legends and myths of huge black dogs. Nocturnal apparitions that are larger than any dog with glowing eyes, that are said to wonder the moors. In most stories the animals are supernatural and are seen as a really bad omen (like hell hounds), Often signalling ones immediate death or that a death is about to occur in the persons family. In some legends they have the ability to shape-shift. Its quite different than the werewolf legend but still, its a nice little tie-in, in my opinion and worth googling if you're interested In that kind of thing. Nice reaction guys 👍
I see that kind of ties in to why in Harry Potter you get Serius as a big scary black dog and his fortune was the Grim. Which was a dog. Can you explain what the moors are. Looked just like a field to me haha.
@@RelaxwithJC lol its basically large open highlands. It usually consists of poor soil so only hardy grass and Heather grow there. Personally I think moors are some of Britain's most beautiful landscapes, but im kinda biased lol

Hey J & C. This is my first time watchin you guys relax & react. You two are hilarious. :-) C's eyes & mouth WIDE OPEN reactions had me ROLLIN! The dog was almost as entertaining as yall. As a dog lover, I kinda deduced, hopefully correctly, that the pooch belonged to J when yall hooked up & now knows to embrace C. Lookin Daddy in the eye elicited a 'whaddaya want'? Lookin Mommy in the eye got an invitation onto the couch for 'hugs'. I peeped the pooch reachin out & touchin Daddy whilst sprawled across Mommy. Or vice versa. YES, AWIL is a classic in a category by itself. I wanted to watch a couple of werewolf movies fuh free today & AM GLAD that I chose yalls almost 46 min reaction. I hoped & sorta 'KNEW' that I'd get to see MOST of the movie. THANKS! I also REALLY admire the way that yall intelligently & effectively get around yt's rules bout only showin so many seconds @ a time of copyrighted content. Yalls is the 'ONLY' yt reaction channel that I've cum across that utilizes the blurring technique & a quick disappearance & reappearance of the content. I guess doin that resets the yt counter to 0. SMART! I checked out a reaction vid to 'Silver Bullet' afore findin yall. :-)

So the first werewolf is called Talbot who had only couple hours earlier escaped from a lunatic asylum after killing a guard where his brother the bald joke telling guy Hackett (changed to protect family name) also the only East Proctor policeman had him incarcerated. Jack in limbo meets Talbot who killed him and gives him advice on how to let David know what he needs to do to bring it all to an end. Hope this adds little bit background to the story for you.

Weird lil thing about the first time I saw any part of the movie. I was about 6 and my family were visiting relatives in London very late at night and we'd been to Piccadilly Circus that day and this movie was on TV but was already at the final part so when I saw the wolf breaking out of the cinema, biting the inpector's head off and running down Piccadilly Circus I thought it was real because my young/stupid brain hadn't yet learnt that just because you see a real place on TV doesn't always mean it's actual reality. :P It didn't scare me though, I just found it fascinating apparently. :O

FYI guys the gentleman from the US Embassy is Mr Frank Oz. He also appears in Trading Places but is better known for his work with Jim Henson. The nurse is played by Jenny Agutter and she is the most beautiful person to ever walk this Earth (check her out in the films like 'Walkabout' & 'Equus').
Not gonna lie I thought the nurse was looking gorgeous too. 😳
@@RelaxwithJC you've probably already watched them but might I recommend The Howling (another werewolf film) and The Thing (1982). The latter is my favourite scifi horror movie and is awesome.

Hi, I know they call this a comedy but 2 me it's a cool but sad movie w/ some humor thrown in. I loved it so much. My brother & I saw it when it came out so we were in our early 20's & though i miss my brother ( my best friend) I have the best memory of us walking home cold, foggy night & we take a shortcut & halfway through the two block wooded dirt path, my bro says " Man it's muddy ,we should've stuck to the road, oh -oh ,he laughed ,beware the moors stick to the road" though i wasn't that scared of the movie but man did i get like the biggest chill ever! looking around with the perfect atmosphere it was so cool & scary..i wouldn't take a shortcut today of course, but my brother was my hero & a practical joker. Yeah he scared me good lol. Anyway love this movie. Great reaction you guys. didn't mean to ramble on.✌
