It's a horror with comedy, it is not a comedic horror movie.

The movie American Werewolf in Paris has a few laughs.i always liked the special effects for that time .
yeah, don't know who said this was a comedy, but YEAH, I saw this as a child and had nightmares for days.
Its a great film. As it ages it becomes more and more a good black comedy

That line never gets old.
Somehow it's actually funnier because there _is_ no "delivery" in the sense that's there's no acting there, the kid just says it.
Whenever I try to describe the humor in this movie, "A naked American man stole my balloons" is my go-to line! So funny!
If memory serves the mother says he'll be beaten for his lying.
But it's complete with the "whaat??" from the mother
The shot of the werewolf walking towards the guy in the tube, shot from the top of the escalator, is one of my all time favorite scenes. Just when you think it's going to cut away you see the wolf actually emerge into the shot and you get an idea of how big he is.
Every time I'm taking the escalator up or down into the subway at night alone I think of that shot.
The actor being chased was Bib Fortuna in Return of the Jedi.

This was the first winner of the newly created Best Makeup Academy Award category. Michael Jackson loved this movie so much he got John Landis and the makeup artist Rick Baker to do the Thriller music video. You can notice the similarities.
Yeah. And Rick Baker didn't want to do the same exact thing again so to make it interesting for himself he had Jackson become a werecat (note the yellow eyes and whiskers) rather than werewolf as he felt a cat suited Jackson's slender dancer physique more anyway. So iconic movie led to iconic music video for an iconic song from an iconic album. :)
The transformation in the "Thriller" video is the second best werewolf transformation I've ever seen. So pathetic that a MUSIC VIDEO has better acclaim to it, than most werewolf films have ever accomplished. Hollywood should be ashamed of themselves.
Rick Baker went on to do bigfoot and the hendersons. Won an oscar for that too

Dog soldiers is great. I’m a D&D DM and I love paying homage to it by putting my players in an abandoned house and having them hold out against super werewolves until dawn.
Frank Oz, the bald American, who talked to David in the hospital when he first woke up, is the man who created Yoda. He was responsible, not only for doing his voice, but also much of the puppetry in The Empire Strikes Back & Return of the Jedi.
And Miss Piggy! Hence the Muppet Show shot in this movie.
I heard his voice and I'm like, "wait... is that Frank Oz!!"
He was also in Trading Places which is another John Landis movie
I didn't know until I saw him in the credits of this movie, the first time I watched it. Frank Oz has done so much work behind "puppets," that for the longest time, I didn't even know what he actually looked like in person. I only knew his voice. lol
He would also go on to direct Little Shop of Horrors in 1986 starring Rick Moranis.
The female lead Jenny Agutter is best known also for 1976's Sci-Fi "Logan's Run" and she was the member of the World Security Council in the "Avengers" movie that Black Widow disguised herself as.

80s were just so special. I love how people think it will be light hearted but then the 80s brutal gore kicks in and people are shocked... This is how passive we've become... This movie is a masterpiece for me. Great reaction thank you... Cheers

For writer/director John Landis, this is a horror movie first and foremost with some comedic moments throughout. He had difficulty selling this script initially because all of the studios said the same thing, "It's too scary to be funny and too funny to be scary." Special make-up effects wizard Rick Baker taught his apprentice Rob Bottin many of his werewolf transformation techniques, which can be seen in "The Howling."
And Bottin missed out on that Special Makeup Effects oscar to his teacher. Which made him determined to go all out on his next project, which he did. He worked non-stop for about a year on his next project, so much so that the day after shooting he had himself checked in at a hospital. That was for a small movie you may have heard of called 'The Thing'.
Baker was also set to do The Howling which was greenlit before AMiL but as soon as Landis got the go ahead he quasi-bullied Baker into dropping out of The Howling .

I mean, for _everyone_ "this is a horror movie first and foremost with some comedic moments". Whoever described it to them as _just_ a comedy mislead them slightly i'd say.
@@anonymes2884 Landis never liked it when people called his movie a “horror comedy”, so he always felt the need to clarify. I think that incorrect label has definitely done this film a disservice.
Man, I remember watching this movie when I was far too young to have seen it. It scared me to death, and gave me nightmares for weeks. Even to this day, that howl that the Werewolf has...like a tortured scream, sends chills up my spine every single time. One of my all time favorite horror movies though.
I was twelve when my sister took me to see this in 1982. I was scared to death. A horror movie peppered with black humor the style is a rarity and the effects Blow away modern movies and their CGI. Definitely a unique film. Stay off the moors!

I saw this in the theater. It was and remains one of my all time favorite horror movies!
Saw this movie when it came out. My parents had recently let me go to the neghborhood cinema by myself. It was a 30 min walk.
The walk home in the dark after watching it is one the scariest moments of my life.
It's a brilliant film.
There seemed to be graphic violence in ALL the movies in the 80's horror, Sci-fi genres. It was great.

I saw this film on television as a kid. Scared throughout the film but loved it. 80's action, horror, sci-fi, and fantasy films were all violent and gory but well made. Lot's of nudity too. Best decade for cinema.

"A werewolf can only be killed by someone who loves him..." is part of the lore from the OG Universal Wolf Man movies. It's funny and makes sense that everything David thinks he knows about werewolves would come from him growing up watching those.
Do you think he ever wondered who loved the werewolf that attacked him and was killed?
As far as I can recall, "House of Frankenstein" was the only Universal Wolf Man movie that mentioned the idea of a werewolf being killed only by someone who loves him.
@@Trainwheel_Time A John Landis-approved radio adaptation of the story added a subplot about the first werewolf being the brother of the big bald guy in the pub, which would fit. But I always took David's comments as speaking of his vulnerability, and its fulfillment a matter of irony. Mind you, it was only today that I thought it was possible to see David's final leap at Alex as being not a resurgence of the animal instinct despite Alex, but rather David, brought back to himself by Alex and doing what he knew would get him killed...

I've seen all the old Universal horror flicks that featured Talbot and as far as I know he was pretty much immortal and silver was his only weakness. If I remember correctly there was also an old gypsy woman who could recite a special poem that was capable of pacifying the werewolf and temporarily rendering him back to human form. I'll have to rewatch those movies as it's been over 40 yrs since Iast seeing any of them.
Wrong. There was NO mention of being killed by someone who loved them in the original wolfman movie.

Y'all were killing me with your reactions! "Are you vulnerable?" "She does not have good taste." 😆😆😆 I saw this in the movie theater with my parents when I was 11 and we all loved it. I think it's funny that sometimes people think that in the past everybody was much more straight-laced, but in the 70s and early '80s, some major shit went down in films and everybody was totally cool with it. I mean they kill children in Jaws 😂 Probably this is why nothing can faze Gen X.

My favorite werewolf movie ever made. The scene of Jack getting attacked was horrifying for me as a kid. The wolf's howl is so spooky and I feel the best I have ever heard in a movie.

Thing is, that howl is a little bit like the sound red foxes make when they shriek at night. And when I was a kid, hearing foxes shrieking on moonlit nights wasn't so unusual, so this film was difficult to shrug off...
....and a bonus Bricktop as the cab driver.

However, I do love that this was voted in a comedy category and it seems like nobody warned you that this was a horror flick. How appropriate though, if you think about it.

I can’t put The Howling on the same level as American Werewolf. The Howling looked good but nowhere near as great as AWIL. Silver Bullet has some decent transformations, especially in the church that, in my opinion, are as good as The Howling.
The SFX artist, Rick Baker, has 7 Oscars out of eleven nominations for makeup, including the first awarded in this category. I remember watching behind-the-scenes documentaries about this movie, and the techniques were amazing in both their complexity and also their simplicity.
This 80s classic never gets old with an incredible soundtrack and some of the greatest practical effects work right next to John Carpenter's The Thing. A must-watch around every Halloween time :-)

You've listed some heavy hitters along with "Ginger Snaps," but I've never heard of it. Gonna have to look for it, especially listed with those classics!
This was the first film to win Special Makeup Effects at the Academy Awards, the 1st year that award was given out. Griffin Dunne, who plays Jack, is a funny sidekick, and his horrific post-death appearances are very funny, but this film is 100% horror. Scared the dung out of me. Those zombie nazis in that dream sequence were terrifying. Also check out John Landis' original take on vampires with his great film "Innocent Blood".
If I'm not mistaken, Griffin Dune was actually traumatized by seeing himself in his death makeup.

Yeah, I'm not sure who told them this was comedy. I mean it's cheezy old school 80s horror so at times it's really stupid, but not meant to be a comedy.
@@marybrown6128 It definitely has its comedic moments. Every scene with Jack is filled with funny moments, the naked american stole my balloons line, the murdered couple in the theater being dead but super cheerful, you cant say youre not laughing at these moments.
@@hrs2044 oh of course there are funny moments, most of the horror movies from back then had stupid funny moments. They did try to inject some humor into the horror films, but back in the day this was never billed as a comedy. That's all I meant. It was always meant to be a horror flick. I was probably about 17 when this came out and it scared the crap out of me! This and The Howling were terrifying, both had really cutting edge (at the time) transformation scenes.
The thing I've always liked about this movie, that I've grown to appreciate more and more the older I get, is how everyone is open and logical about David's apparently psychological issues. Like, he tells people that he's hallucinating his dead friend and is fairly properly concerned instead of hiding or dismissing it and it's always taken sincerely and no one acts like he's stupid or crazy.

The Lead Actor, David Naughton, first became famous as an actor for his DR Pepper softdrink commercials where he danced and sang. The famous jingle from those commercials was "I'm a Pepper, she's a Pepper, he's a Pepper, we're the Peppers.. Wouldn't you like to be a Pepper too, Be a Pepper. Drink DR Pepper". Commercials are probably posted on UA-cam. It was so catchy and such a famous ad campaign in the late 70s!
Wow! This is an awesome film! John Landis at his horrific and comedic best! If you blink, you'll miss John Landis' brief cameo in the riot scene when the wolf makes his appearance in Picadilly Circus later on in the film. Thanks for the upload.

9:35 - The makeup and practical effects in this movie are what sold it. For 1981, this was incredible stuff! It won the first ever Best Makeup Oscar that year. In fact, they made the category just for this film!
11:14 - Jack's ongoing decay through the movie was disturbingly accurate, and fascinated some of us with an appreciation of details.
14:00 - This. THIS is what made us young horror fans fall in love with this movie. The effects and David Naughton's acting during the transformation sold us 100%!
I've lost my taste for horror movies over the decades, but this one will always have a special place in my kennel... ummm... heart. ;-)
Oh... and for your amusement, look up "David Naughton Dr. Pepper." You can thank me later.

Yeah, this makeup and effects were legendary when this came out. Same guy who directed Animal House did this one, of all things - John Landis. He also always includes the phrase "See you next Wednesday" in all of his movies. Either on posters, signs, or said out loud by someone. He also directed the infamous Thriller video. He got into a bit of trouble after a fatal accident happened while he was filming his segment in Twilight Zone: The Movie.
"A bit of trouble" like how everyone calls him a child-killer and they're right? Steven Spielberg told him never to talk to him again after he heard about that.

Also, I'm surprised nobody seems to spot Frank Oz. His voice is pretty much Kermit.
Especially when they show the Muppets on the TV afterwards. 😂 I saw one reaction that noted he sounded like Kermit, without knowing who he was.

There's the scene where Jack holds up the Mickey Mouse toy and waves it saying 'Hi David" before explaining his predicament. Later when David begins his transformation there is a close-up shot of that toy. There are some clever things going on with this movie.
Yeah, Frank Oz didn't perform Kermit. He was Fozzie Bear and Miss Piggy mainly.
The ending with the sudden cut to black and The Marcels "Blue Moon" playing is just so perfect.
Yeah it was pretty ballsy of Landis to just fade to black with no real ending. Just a sad ending for David who had to die but i bet most people thought he would somehow survive and everything would be fine. I loved the dark ending.
Bom-ba-ba-da-bom-da-dang-da-da-dang! Love the ending song, Blue Moon. Anyway, John Landis gets angry when people call this a Comedy. He says it's actually a serious horror film. I don't see how he can say that though, when there is clearly dark humor all throughout this film. Even the song at the ending speaks to the dark humor. The Nazi Werewolves in the nightmare scene are an awesome part, very unexpected and out of nowhere.
I was a bit surprised when they said they'd been told it was a comedy as well. "Light-hearted horror," maybe, but it's no Ace Ventura lol

When you said this was a werewolf comedy I thought boy are you in for shock. I saw this back in the early 80s on a pirate vhs when I 9 years old and yes it scared the me witless. Now though it's in my top ten favourite horror movies of time most of which are from 70s and 80s. The bald glasses guy from the American Embassy that visits David at the hospital is Frank Oz who is voice of Miss Piggy and Yoda. Great reaction.

Another good Werewolf movie is "Silver Bullet" based on a Steven King book.
Not a super well-known film, but ‘Silver Bullet’ (written by Stephen King) is a classic werewolf horror flick that is vastly underrated, in my opinion. Terrorized me as a kid and still holds up quite well over the years (it’s from ‘85). Gary Busey and Corey Haim are great in that one. You guys should check it out!
Dunno who told you this is a comedy. There are some light-hearted moments now and then, but it would definitely be under 'horror' in the video shop.
It is one of the top 5 werewolf movies of all time. The special effects ALONE were cutting edge of that time. No CGI...
I watched this for the first time when I was 10, on cable, and without my mom's knowledge. I absolutely loved it and it's been one of ma favorite horror movies of all time. I say this in all reactions to this movie, Jenny Agutter was overlooked and just fantastic in this, I actually get a little choked up at the end, feel so bad for her.

Man I love Spooktober, everybody is dropping one great scary movie after another. You finish one, go to the homepage and they "Oh snap those guys just dropped American Werewolf in London!"
Dude, I know exactly what you mean. Later in the day, Caped Informer also did "American Werewolf", and that's a great reaction, also. This is one of those movies I watch every single reaction for, lol. I never get sick of it. But TBR Schmitt is the Cadillac of reaction channels! :D But yeah, I'm having a hard time keeping up with them all! This film won the first ever Academy Award for Best Makeup and the 1981 Saturn Award for Best Horror Film. Dame Jenny Agutter OBE was a completely underrated actress at the time, and was best known to American audiences as "Jessica 6" in the 1976 film "Logan's Run". She went on to a long and very successful career and was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 2012. Before this film David Naughton was best known for singing the "Be A Pepper" song in a 1970's Dr. Pepper commercial.
I was about 12 or 13 when this came out and my friends and I thought it was more funny than scary. We watched it over and over again (mostly for the special effects and soundtrack). Now I'm wondering what that says about my generation...lol

I never stopped what I was doing so fast to watch a movie reaction lol. Never thought you guys would react to this movie, definitely a pleasant surprise. I love all of your reactions to these old movies and I find your comments very insightful given the fact that these movies were way before both of your times. Now you have to react to The Howling :) This was the other huge werewolf movie that came out around the same time as this one. And the special effects were just as revolutionary, but unlike An American Werewolf in London, The Howling had no comedy element in it. It was pretty much all horror. That movie traumatized me as a kid lol.
My mom told me when I was twelve that she got a movie in the comedy section that I might like. It was this, & I’ve been scarred for life ever since.

I saw this on release in the UK when I was 17 with my younger sister at the Odeon in Liverpool, we had never seen anything like it before! We got the bus home, in the dark and it was a full moon, as soon as we stepped off the bus we ran all the way home 😅
The guy who got launched through the glass store front by the car was the director of the film, John Landis.

I saw this dozens of times as a 12 year old and loved it. This was one of those films that HBO replayed over and over in the early 80's. The practical effects were ahead of their time for a horror film. They still hold up today with the exception of the running werewolf rig. The transformation sequences are still really great especially when coupled with the sound design. So good 👍
This is a horror movie with clever humor sprinkled throughout. It won a "comedy" poll only because it is a movie that needs viewed, because the practical effects are still arguably the greatest ever done and still hold up very well and likely always will. 'The Howling' (from the same time frame) also has great effects and transformation scenes and humor injected in it.
My parents showed me this film at a drive in double feature back in 1981. I was only 5 years old. We watched An American werewolf in London at 7:15 AND Jaws at 9pm! Both on the same night. My mother told me the drive in was running a promotion called, a night filled with teeth! Both of these films changed my life. I loved them both from that night until this very day. These two classics, An American Werewolf in London & Jaws are still 2 of my absolute favorite films!

I'm in my late 40s, I saw this movie when I was too young. I distinctly remember being terrified in bed seeing the guy with the ripped out neck each time i closed my eyes for so long.
Great film... groundbreaking effects... a similar movie from around the same time (without the giggles) is The Howling.

A complete monster movie. It begins, it progresses, and it ends. Movies don't do that anymore. Creative application of music to set dream scenes apart, great editing, and of course, the legendary practical effects. Leaves you wanting more. 10/10.
I have never thought of this as just a comedy. It offers a great atmosphere for a horror film , yes with some funny moments or comments but not that much to call it a comedy... :)

I love how you both were sold on this being a light-hearted comedy scary film. Haha! This is one of my favorite horror films of all time and it DOES have some light moments peppered in but it's mostly a straight up graphic horror werewolf movie.
As a London lad myself this movie has always been one of my fav's, keep em coming guy's.
YES I love this movie! Such a brilliant and horrifying and funny take on the werewolf genre with awesome practical effects and brilliant music choices. Hearing Blue Moon will never be the same again. :)
The name of the porno was "See you next Wednesday" the title of which makes many cameo appearances in many of Landis's movies. This was a superb film that imo is timeless. But then thats what you get when you have people with incredibly talent and skill make something both in front and behind the camera. And not a jot of bloody CGI either. lol
Cool fact the werewolf transformation effects was the beginning of the werewolf transformation we all know and love today more animal and less man like as the ones looked the 30's to 70's and I loved watching your two reactions to this film great job.

Yup, this is definitely less a "werewolf comedy" and more a "comedy that gets brutally interrupted by werewolf stuff."
I saw this in the theater when it came out. This along with The Thing, and Fright Night. I was 11. Thanks uncle Dave.
"A werewolf can only be killed by someone who loves him" is the tragic twist at the end that I haven't seen reactors "get". When she says "I love you" there's a tense pause by werewolf/David as he contemplates what I LOVE YOU means... to him it meant "I'm going to kill you." So David's response was "Not if I kill you first."
I don't think that's the case. I think the tense pause was David's human consciousness briefly taking over. Remember, he knew he had to die but he couldn't go through with suicide (although, he tried at first). So, I think he lunged at Alex (in his werewolf form) just to have the police kill him.

He recognized her in that moment and her love. He lunged so the police would kill him because he knew there was no other way to end this.
The village where the outside shots of 'The Slaughtered Lamb' were filmed is Crickadarn in mid-Wales. The interior was filmed in a real pub in southern England.
It's a perfect blend of horror and humor.
The chaos that ensues in the town with all the traffic and people just getting killed is INSANE!!! It almost feels random but it's just a chaotic situation that got out of hand really fast!

The title of the movie is a homage to one of John Landis' favourite books, A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court, which the nurse reads to David to help him sleep. And the porno movie, See You Next Wednesday, was also directed by John Landis, specifically for this movie :-)

I love how a well-chosen song over the end credits can serve as a perfect punctuation mark to end your movie.
I saw this when it came out - talk about being gob smacked! The effects/make-up were incredible for the time. It is such an over the top dark, dark comedy.

Personally, I prefer the werewolves in The Howling. Fits more into my idea of a what a creature would look like.

Years ago a movie magic exhibit was at a local museum. Seperate from the rest of the exhibit down a dark hallway I rounded a corner and was immediately confronted by the hero werewolf head from this movie and the recorded howl. I almost crapped my pants.

This is mine and my dad's favourite horror movie. The scene in the underground terrified him when he first saw it, especially the bit where the Werewolf rounds the corner when the guy is on the escalator. To this day, if dad is in the London underground late at night, he'll keep checking over his shoulder every time he goes up an escalator 😂

The BEST werewolf transformation of all time. This movie and the thing are such good arguments for making movies with practical effects whenever possible and only relying on cgi when absolutely necessary.

Hey guys, I've watched a lot of your reactions and this one had me laughing a lot. I saw this when it came out. Jack was in a great movie called After Hours, really funny. You gotta check out Monty Python And The Holy Grail. A completely different movie you need to watch is Only The Brave with Josh Brolin. You guys are really my favorite couple doing reactions. Keep it up.

I first saw this film when I was about 6 or 7 years of age . HBO used to show this film a lot when I was a child. Back then, the first transformation scene scared the HELL out of me. I didn't understand the comedic elements of the film until I bought it on DVD years later as an adult. And, those elements were pretty funny when I thought about them. But, that didn't sacrifice the horrific parts of the film. This film is a masterpiece that balances horror and comedy without sacrificing one element for the other.
