I've literally never seen such a treasure trove provided by an OP before. Thanks Mr. Savage!! I'm going to take a stab at pawing through all of this dude's work, thank you!
I have a friend that used to work at a zoo, and he told me that the noises that the raptors make in Jurassic Park are the mating noises that tortoises make... and now I laugh every time we hear it.
the band on the raptor's muzzle is so amusing to me because it really makes it feel more like a real animal. its like when crocodilians have their jaws banded/taped for safety. yeah this is just Adam's casual pet raptor. yeah she has her muzzle banded so that she doesn't bite anyone. as you do.
The best collabs are when you can see mutual fun / enjoyment as well as both parties walking away with newly acquired knowledge courtesy of the other person. It's so endearing and inspiring to witness.
This gives you an idea of how difficult it is to re-create nature in all its variety and fine detail. Can you imagine breaking into Adam’s shop by accident and coming eye to eye with this thing? That looks so great!
The painting difference between Adam and Gary on the first coat is so funny. You can see Gary is being a little light and more specific to get some detail and texture, and Adam is just SOAKING it lmao.
This kind of knowledge sharing and content as a "how to" is exactly why i started watching the channel in the beginning. Well done adam and team. Thank you😁
I love these videos - it was worth waiting years for, and I hope they are drawn out for 6 more episodes. I'm enjoying them that much. (Probably shooting myself in the foot here and this is the last episode... but the sentiment stands.)
I love this episode including the talk about art directors needing to ad something to your work. As an graphics designers and artist i mostly made two or three versions to give them something to chose.
After all the cloaca talk when you guys turned and faced the dino's butt, I couldn't but imagine the raptor giving birth to Adam, like the Jim Carrey in the rhino scene in Ace Ventura 2. 🤣
Either fossil evidence, or extrapolating what we know of modern reptiles. I think they mentioned the pigment research in a previous video- analysis of the elements that remain in samples can be compared to the makeup of modern ones. (For example, the differences between melanin in our hair to chlorophyll in plants.) That's my understanding of it, anyway. Anatomically, I think dinosaurs / crocodilians / birds have roughly the same structure for digestion and elimination and egg-laying. @FreejackVesa
@@FreejackVesa The specimen Adam and Gary were talking about is a beautifully preserved dinosaur called a Psittacosaurus - this particular fossil is preserved with it's underside exposed, and preserved the scales on it's underside (hence the cloaca talk - the pattern/shape of the scales indicate the presence of an opening). The scales also preserved some of the pigment compounds, which gave us a very detailed look at the type of counter-shading on the animal
With all of the wealth of information the cool and interesting moments everything shared in this video, the one thing that felt the most impactful for both the viewers and the creators was the moment that Adam put the eyes in. It was like everything stopped and collective WOW was felt.
That transformation was absolutely amazing. The skin in its natural colour everything looked weird, the folds looked unnatural. But after the paint it all made perfect sense!
it's amazing to see how that initial puppet becomes more like a creature as the paint is added. I didn't believe that they could make the cloth gaps disappear at first, but the end result really speaks for itself. I'm now tempted to paint some scale model dinosaurs myself. (and I so didn't need motivation to buy into Path of Conquest by Para Bellum and get myself one of the big dinosaur-like monsters ... )
I love your enthusiasm. It carries over and shines through. It's like I'm right there with you all enjoying the process, discovery, and joy. Thank you.
i know that this was getting my creative juices flowing when i started throwing out little ideas and adjustments on color.. and i'm getting excited. i love dinosaurs, because there are no limits
I'm still dino obsessed too. The raptor family has been my fave since I was a kid. Flipped my lid when I first learned about the Utah Raptor. I also adore micro-raptors. I think they're adorable lil guys. Love the recreations that give them iridescent black feathers.
@@hraefn1821 wasn't there a paper about some fossil microraptor feathers saying they were colored like ravens? i heard that somewhere. anyways, u right, raptors rock- "even the word "raptor" means "bird of prey"" -modern, and extinct.
That was literally some deep talk:D Such an impressive build, leaves such an vivid impression, even without the colour it seemed almost alive!! Wishing wonderful Christmas holidays!
"I don't have to know how to finish it, I only know what the next step is." - 11:08 is a good way to progress with more or less any project. Break things down into smaller steps and most problems becomes more trivial over time. 27:45 and forward is also a good description of how to make art in general. A lot of people I have talked to over the years that "wants to make art" often stop at the "everything I do is awful." but personally I see that as better than regarding everything one does as "perfect". Now the problem a lot of people stumble onto is indecision regarding what to practice on, but then one can just make a list of things and roll a dice. If one is terrible at drawing hands, then force yourself to draw 50 hands, now you should be slightly better at it. Rinse and repeat for other things and given enough time most artistic ventures one ponders should be approachable. 18:40 about the weight of paint and how that effects aircraft ended very differently than I expected. But even leveling off the rivets with bondo would have added so much weight that the plane would have noticeably less lift left for passagers/cargo. But yes, paint does add weight, though grinding down the very structural components of the vehicle seems crazy... To be honest, I wouldn't even let that paint shop work on a car since that level of "can do" attitude is a bit too stupid...
I love the mix of precise, accurate, scientific knowledge about both extinct and modern biology, as well as experience with the media, tools, and techniques you're working in, alongside the creative squishiness (a very good thing!) of feeling when something is the way it ought to be because it just feels right. And I'm glad you did not go with the green. I know it's a bias of mine, but I grew up in a world where all dinosaurs were the green of the Sinclair emblem or of the plastic army 'guys' we'd play with. I remember when I first saw dinosaurs with multiple color schemes, and people being bothered by it, and thinking myself that, duh!, they had hundreds of millions of years all over the planet to evolve in so many ways. Of course they were multi-colored (and often FEATHERED, we now know!). I mean, just do an image search for 'monitor lizards, australia' as just one example of what can happen, both with color and pattern. As Gary says, reality itself often looks almost literally unbelievable. So, yes, there was certainly green in the color scheme of actual dinosaurs, but I reject that reality and rejoice in this desert beauty!
she looks absolutely fantastic! i've very much enjoyed watching her progress! of course, as i'm sure you can sympathize with, i am one who cannot help but think "i would've done it like this" as i watch various projects. personally, i would've done her with a tan base coat, with highlights in od green & a woodish brown, plus the graying & crease weathering you did - that's one of the magnificent things about each person's individual esthetic, the same basic thing coming out in so many fantastic ways! i look forward to seeing more! 😊
Freaky moment when it was getting painted. The damn thing jiggled so realistically. I've never seen a puppet or animatronic move like that. That's how they need to make it breathe in movies. Pat it and make it jiggle
This is so epic. The content is incredible, I'm learning loads. Also, the over the shoulder hand-held shots make it feel like we're there with ya, learning from Gary. Thank you!!
I don’t think you know how happy I was seeing this was up, sadly I was at my dad’s at the time and we were going out so I had to wait when I got home to watch it.
Watching this today and finding myself in 5 full minutes of conversion on Dino and Croc Anus pigment! Top content Tested! Loving it! 😂😂 The curiosity is always epic! Keep it up Adam!
When the raptor was first painted in that yellow ocher, I wasn't feeling it. But as soon as those brown mottled stripes started to show, it started to really be something. The more you painted, the better it came. Don't forget to dirty up the feet to make it look like it's been for a actual walk. 😂
I love watching people do stuff like this. I wish I was able to make things as amazing as this, but I don't have the time, money, resources, and talent to do it
I recall hearing a story in the 1990's of a company trying to sell a purple dinosaur and the barney people went to court and had to bring in a paleontologist (who was in my department )to argue that dinosaurs were not actually purple. Not sure if they could have proved that! The red herring discussion of using the wrong color (in this case purple) in this video was also interesting.

Oh, yes, we are already planning another collaboration!
@@testedThis is excellent news! These have been some of my favorite videos lately!

This would make one heck of museum display. Dinosaurs and art. Little mini raptor costumes for kids.
"There was just a perfectly preserved cloaca" is definitely the best thing I've ever heard either in or out of context.
the side eye to the camera and the "how much" is what cracked me XD
When you find yourself hooking up with the old timers at the bar last call...too much?
I paused the video before he said that to get a drink and that was the first thing I heard when I un-paused.
You totally need a speaker mounted in the throat to make raptor sounds, this thing is a labor of love and looks just amazing!
I have a friend that used to work at a zoo, and he told me that the noises that the raptors make in Jurassic Park are the mating noises that tortoises make... and now I laugh every time we hear it.
I once saw a falcon fursuit that used a voice changer to sound all squawky and it really added to how real the performance felt!
Only channel where i would watch two people sitting and colouring a dinosaur picture for 20 mins straight!
the band on the raptor's muzzle is so amusing to me because it really makes it feel more like a real animal. its like when crocodilians have their jaws banded/taped for safety. yeah this is just Adam's casual pet raptor. yeah she has her muzzle banded so that she doesn't bite anyone. as you do.
The dinosaur cloaca/snake poo tangent was extremely necessary to the competition of the project. I'm glad it was covered in depth.

Oh, there are a couple more to come (we're still filming)! So glad you're enjoying them!
Husband called and asked what I did for lunch-my reply “I watched two guys paint a dinosaur for 30 minutes”.😂
😂
Well, in your defense, it was three guys 🙃
i love the back and forth between these two great makers
I love the random stories and conversations they have, they're so excited about their interests
I love this episode including the talk about art directors needing to ad something to your work. As an graphics designers and artist i mostly made two or three versions to give them something to chose.
Love that beautiful golden-brown, lion-like color for her. It suits her so well, an excellent choice!
for some reason, I absolutely relate to two people spending hours discussing the correct anatomy of a dinosaur
After all the cloaca talk when you guys turned and faced the dino's butt, I couldn't but imagine the raptor giving birth to Adam, like the Jim Carrey in the rhino scene in Ace Ventura 2. 🤣
But how would they know what a dinosaur cloaca looks like?
Either fossil evidence, or extrapolating what we know of modern reptiles.
