Been waiting for an episode about the scenic painters who do the actual sets! I work in the movie industry as a scenic and watching that would be eye opening to audiences .
Almost perfectly. Was really caught off guard. Only missing the "e" at the end, which americans generally dont pronounce at the end of a word. (i.e. Porsh (instead of Porsch"e"). Still really good.
Yup, half the time Americans try to pronounce German it sounds they are trying to summon something from a Lovecraft story and I have to turn on subtitles. Not the case this time.
@green64 that is true and an oversight on my part. Just generally more used to its beeing Pfefferminze, when referring to it. But Pfefferminz is perfectly viable!
Because of how old these may be and the way that PEZ dispensers work I might have done a lot more physical wearing on the tail of the duck like someone had opened the head over and over throughout the years. I feel like by then the tail would have been almost rounded off the way the center of a wooden stair tread gets after years and years of foot traffic. Maybe the same goes for the crown of the head and the tip of the beak. Thoughts?
I love that I live in CT and Pez has a big presence in the show Silo, Milford Ct is where the actual factory was & still is located. They have a museum tour also which is cool to see the history of the candy toy
PEZ Dispenser... haven't seen one of those since I left Gibraltar in 1960, at the age of 12. Loved the Sweet Violet Pez tabs and the Sherbet tabs, too. Didn't know they still made them, as I haven't seen any in shops since I was a teenager. Russ. Portsmouth, UK.
I used to own a workshop with a quite rough concrete floor. Using that surface to rough up my copper and silver plates, hammering those with a rubber or rawhide mallet on the floor. Then flatten them a bit with those hammers. Also scratching stuff on that floor worked great.
1: i absolutely love watching you work on this, tis calming, instructful, and filled with your joy for the art 2: am i the only person who tries to like… imagine what materials would come into contact/stick to a thing in which places first, then try to mimic those actions on a more massive scale? 3: a nice way to represent the wear of pockets (that i have found anyway) is to get a sack cloth big enough to wrap around the object, and if possible flip back on itself, then drop the item in and use you hands on the outside to roll the item around inside, and shake it around a while. If it was more in a junk box/drawer then additionally throw a few nuts and bolts and various other random bits into the bag with it
It’s interesting to think about if plastic would be as yellow in the silo since the indoor lights emit much less UV than the sun. The only area where you’d see a lot of UV would be the farms
Adam, you've toughed a nerve. I knew a guy who had a tattoo of a Pez dispenser with his face on top. And... one time I was drinking beer with a young lady from Austria, and this kind of drunk guy came over to our picnic table. We were friendly to him, and after he learned she was from Austria he said, "I've heard the surfing there is great!" She was bewildered. After he left I explained that he had confused Australia with Austria, and she laughed and laughed.
Adam, how do you not die from the level of geek-outedness that obviously occurs when you handle some of these props? My brain barely copes just watching you handle them.
I'm on S2E05 and I had no clue what the heck was that thing until watching this video. I wasn't even sure if it was a real-world thing or something unique to the lore supposed to be a mystery for the audience as well..
i did a bunch of shoots for hg tv back in the day fir these giant collections people had. on of the collections we covered was the worlds largest pez dispenser collection. there are so many of them. some of the other collections i filmed, worlds biggest spiderman collection, the largest smiley face collection. we almost did the largest cigerette pack collection but they didnt want to do tobacco.
Neat lesson in weathering. As a long ago kid model builder I have wondered about such. Trivia question: I thought a McGuffin (for Silo) was more like the disk drive - something that drives the plot. The Duckie Pez could have been anything else - a troll doll for instance.
By the way....in the states outside of California we use fullers earth. Also walnut shells can be used to make a healthy version of asphaltum....which is an amazing color and had to replicate
The ducky on cabinet at 24:07 has brownish line on cheek and lengthwise near top blue base those marks remind me of fine point or precision point sharpies. But didn't see Adam apply those marks so was that done after? Or was the ducky on cabinet simply touched up by someone else, or is another dispenser weathered by someone else?
As a lover of PEZ , I can say this with certainty .A PEZ dispenser with meticulous care ans stored in perfect conditions might last 100 years ,but it would super fragile. I had a PEZ dispenser crumble to pieces after sitting on a shelf for less than a decade. A used found Pez wear and tear exposed to the elements ,sun light excetra might last a couple year
Silo is such an awesome show. I'm conflicted though, I have the books, as yet unread, but can't decide if I want to wait for season 3 and 4 first so as not to spoil them for myself...
With the weathering fluids, does it ever make sense to let them dry before wiping them so that it imparts a more subtle weathering on the flat parts that wiping-while-wet cleans up perhaps too well? I know you said time is of the essence, But I'm supposing a professional would work on a bunch of props that need similar treatment so as to parallelize their work and allow to longer steps like drying to occur while working on other objects in the pipeline.
Another "antiquing" trick I like to do on wood, frames, boxes etc. Is to use a jar full of vinegar, water & steel wool. Let it sit for four or five days & apply to bare wood. It will give the wood a gray/weathered look.🎉Cheers🎉
Great looking replicas... why didn't you include the "leash"? Unfortunately that duck dispenser is "retired" and will only go up in price if you can even find them.
They're inside. No UV (very little). :D I wonder if you could make a rotating drum filled with denim impregnated with grit (like REALLY full of it... smallish cut up patches), and fill it with dirty water (greasy, muddy, whatever). Then put in 30 Pez dispensers and rotate it for a day while you go away and do other stuff. Kind of like a set it and forget it simulation of being in a pocket for years, to multitask. Just an idea.
I wonder how holding things to camera would look if the field if view didn't get larger as you receed? Everything else would look absolutely insane, but you would have to put it any specific distance from your face.
I have a LEGO Brick on a keychain for one of my keys. It's very round now and the logos on top of the studs are fully worn off. Keys are a good abrasive.
You have to admire how commited Adam is to not caring how his hair looks.
Every day is a bad hair day - and proud of it 👍🏻
Its actually intentional. And.... It's working
I figured he put a paper clip in an outlet right before filming the intro 🤷
He needs to go easy with the power tools for a bit
@bauerma4 the process is a highly guarded family secret. Passed on only to Boris Johnson.
Been waiting for an episode about the scenic painters who do the actual sets! I work in the movie industry as a scenic and watching that would be eye opening to audiences .
It’s like Covid lockdown all over again… this is my favourite type of Savage video. Weathering!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You need more exclamation points.
As a native german speaker you did infact pronounce Pfefferminz really well
Almost perfectly. Was really caught off guard. Only missing the "e" at the end, which americans generally dont pronounce at the end of a word. (i.e. Porsh (instead of Porsch"e"). Still really good.
@@sarwadsarwad Pfefferminz without "e" is not wrong, we use both too. i case of candy Pfefferminz ist use more often. "Pfefferminzbonbons"
Yup, half the time Americans try to pronounce German it sounds they are trying to summon something from a Lovecraft story and I have to turn on subtitles.
Not the case this time.
i find this a bit peculiar in that americans don't necessarily nitpick how germans pronounce english words. yet the reverse is true.
@green64 that is true and an oversight on my part. Just generally more used to its beeing Pfefferminze, when referring to it. But Pfefferminz is perfectly viable!
Watching Adam weather things is relaxing in a similar way to watching Bob Ross paint is.. except I actually prefer watching Adam weather things.
YESSSS! More weathering videos please!!
Because of how old these may be and the way that PEZ dispensers work I might have done a lot more physical wearing on the tail of the duck like someone had opened the head over and over throughout the years. I was thinking all the paint would have come off (and maybe been hand painted back on) given how dependent on repair the silo is
So excited to watch the Silo Season 2 finale tonight!!
it's already out...
That powder really is what sold it for me. Just fully took the shine off
I love that I live in CT and Pez has a big presence in the show Silo, Milford Ct is where the actual factory was & still is located. They have a museum tour also which is cool to see the history of the candy toy
4:35 hi this is Peer from Germany. You absolutley nailed the pronunciation.
Cool, I enjoy Silo so much!
I used to own a workshop with a quite rough concrete floor. Using that surface to rough up my copper and silver plates, hammering those with a rubber or rawhide mallet on the floor. Then flatten them a bit with those hammers. Also scratching stuff on that floor worked great.
Rough concrete also works well for roughing up new, too-slippy dance shoes 👍

I didn't know i needed to see Adam messing around with a Pez dispenser
It’s a fantastic skill to have, and you can practice on cheap items before tackling a bigger project. Thank you for sharing this great craft
Fun fact - Pez spelled backwards is Zep.
Oh, good - of all the Tested content, I think the weathering is my favourite, even ahead of the prop builds.
Cool, the fullers makes all the difference. Now to watch S2 finale 😊
Love Silo!! If it wasnt for Testeds videos I would have never watched it. Thanx for that.
I am very curious about the weathering techniques prop makers use so this is very interesting to see it in action.
It’s interesting to think about if plastic would be as yellow in the silo since the indoor lights emit much less UV than the sun. The only area where you’d see a lot of UV would be the farms

yes another video thanks!
I NEED a video on how to make a custom case with the foam inserts like that! Please @adam! Please!
I love the case, so totally Tested.
The master at work ❤
Adam, how do you not die from the level of geek-outedness that obviously occurs when you handle some of these props? My brain barely copes just watching you handle them.
Just saw the announcement that you’ll be coming to MegaCon 2025!!! I’m so hyped 😆😆😆😆I’m a huge fan of your Tested Videos and Mythbusters
I feel like the shot of the back of the dryer was just so we could experience what Adam meant about the PEZ dispenser in his eye lol
I'm on S2E05 and I had no clue what the heck was that thing until watching this video. I wasn't even sure if it was a real-world thing or something unique to the lore supposed to be a mystery for the audience as well..
Thank you.
2:20 watch The Pez Outlaw if you haven’t, it’s like Narcos but Pez (real story)
He did a great job weathering his hands too ...
I was hoping you’d do one of these
Weathering is compressing the vagaries of a lifetime down into an hour.
That leather workbench top has gained a lot of weathering and used character itself.
I'm loving the new Tested with James Gunn.
Really hoping you get to do the new season as well.
Maybe hit the PEZ dispenser with UV to fade it a bit?
Tumble in sharp sand for a few minutes?
i did a bunch of shoots for hg tv back in the day fir these giant collections people had. on of the collections we covered was the worlds largest pez dispenser collection. there are so many of them. some of the other collections i filmed, worlds biggest spiderman collection, the largest smiley face collection. we almost did the largest cigerette pack collection but they didnt want to do tobacco.
Adam’s usual ‘overweathering’ works out well for a prop like this I think
I love watching these! I just wish the video was 4k so we could see all the little details :(
I just watched the one day build of you weathering the Nerf gun you did years ago. Now you're doing some PEZ dispensers! Such cool painting tricks.
How much voltage does it take to get my hair to do that?
Neat lesson in weathering. As a long ago kid model builder I have wondered about such. Trivia question: I thought a McGuffin (for Silo) was more like the disk drive - something that drives the plot. The Duckie Pez could have been anything else - a troll doll for instance.

Good work ❤
Dude… thank you. 🙏🏼
pretty good pronunciation of the word Pfefferminz! everything done right.
You gonna be in Orlando for Megacon!
The Murphy Lab for PEZ dispensers
as an english speaker, you pronounce the word dispenser really well.

I AM from Austria! And I love PEZ! :D
Was there a lot of static in the cave today 😂
Well, to be frank, you basically pronounced "Pfefferminz" perfectly
For the love of God, people need to stop saying "Spoiler" AFTER they spoil something.
Shit I love this show apple are producing some amazing series I feel they chose quality over quantity
My eyesight isn’t what it used to be, but is that a face hugger hanging in the background?
As a lover of PEZ , I can say this with certainty .A PEZ dispenser with meticulous care ans stored in perfect conditions might last 100 years ,but it would super fragile.

Hello Adam from Argentina 🇦🇷
Just curious, have you or your friends ever 3D printed a suit of armor like the Knights of the Round Table and all the banners and regalia.
Feels like a silly question - how durable are weathering washes on their own? No clear coat, I would worry about it coming off?
Silo is such an awesome show. I'm conflicted though, I have the books, as yet unread, but can't decide if I want to wait for season 3 and 4 first so as not to spoil them for myself...
I just spent a good part of 25 minutes watching someone sand a Pez dispenser.
Imagine making a product where the intended use is for 99% of it to end up on a rag.
I felt like I was watching Bob Ross!
With the weathering fluids, does it ever make sense to let them dry before wiping them so that it imparts a more subtle weathering on the flat parts that wiping-while-wet cleans up perhaps too well?

They still ship millions of theses things each year? That's crazy!
I haven't really thought of or seen one for like a decade or so.
very cool !!!!
Oh that thumbnail suddenly very interesting.
I love using ultrafine grey scotchbrite.
@14:33 The opposite of blue on the color wheel is orange, not yellow.
Just curious... exactly what kind of weather goes on inside pockets? 🤔
Grundge Duck! Love it. (Now it despenses chocolate pez candy!😅)
Another "antiquing" trick I like to do on wood, frames, boxes etc. Is to use a jar full of vinegar, water & steel wool. Let it sit for four or five days & apply to bare wood. It will give the wood a gray/weathered look.🎉Cheers🎉
Maybe not a fair quesiton, but I have to ask Adam. Which is greater, Silo or The Expanse?
Harness batch
Is it important the hairdryer matches the duck?
Of course you made a case for it but why didn't we get to see THAT as well? ;-)
Great looking replicas... why didn't you include the "leash"?
Unfortunately that duck dispenser is "retired" and will only go up in price if you can even find them.
Hey Adam. I was looking for a way to weather something that should look like it has been in the Sun fpr a looong time, faded plastic like. any ideas?
They're inside. No UV (very little). :D
I wonder if you could make a rotating drum filled with denim impregnated with grit (like REALLY full of it... smallish cut up patches), and fill it with dirty water (greasy, muddy, whatever). Everything else would look absolutely insane, but you would have to put it any specific distance from your face.
We called it neck candy
I think a ding or two would've been a good addition (:
Visit the PEZ factory in CT, you can buy the candy by the shovel full!!
23:18 - Someone please tell me that the film industry didn't move from diatomaceous earth to walnut shells because diatomaceous earth isn't vegan.
I have a LEGO Brick on a keychain for one of my keys.
It's very round now and the logos on top of the studs are fully worn off. Keys are a good abrasive.
Any clues on your choice of costume for Megacon Orlando 2025?
Is that California legal or a high capacity dispenser?
The dispensers PEZ makes nowadays are so cheap they break before you even get through the first package of candy.
I am so glad Adam's' cave is not near LA in the path of the fires.
I feel like parts of the base would have snapped off because the plastic would have weakened.
Nice :)
Interesting this model was introduced at 2009
Streaming on Apple TV +...BTW...not Amazon 👍
I can imagine an underground market of “ancient” Pez containers on Ebay‼️
Shame the show is on Apple TV i already pay to many subscriptions guess i can check the high seas for this show as it looks decent.
May the wind fill your sails. Me hearty!
