You have to remember there’s guys like Eddie Van Halen who never really took guitar lessons and didn’t even know how to read sheet music and he became an all time great because he practiced so much. And now with all the videos you can watch, you can learn to do anything, it’s just up to you to sit there and put the time in. It takes a long time to be great at guitar.
Frusciante is insane. I just love his playing style. He’s a genius musician and he knows so much theory and technical stuff. Even his solo stuff is amazing

Calm down, man, this song got average 8 notes per second and as you just started playing guitar you probably got no alternate picking skills, so you will find this hard as fuck and probably will give up on playing guitar. Try something easier like Californication and also don't focus only in learning songs, because learning musical theory is important too :)

I can learn almost any metal song in minutes, anything with pentatonics, but since this is with crazy chords I'm not used to I have a really time playing it at tempo. It depends what things you have practiced and what techniques you know.
I mostly play fingerstyle acoustic guitar so I personally find stuff that uses chords a ton easier than other songs. I guess a lot of people are just not used to playing melodies using chords

You shouldn't need to look at your hands - if you do you haven't fully learned the piece! Guitar is about muscle memory. You can't look at your fretting and picking hand at the same time so you need to be familiar with it.

The key for anyone learning to play this song, is to learn it with the correct picking pattern FIRST, no matter how slow it may be. Once you can pick it without thinking about it, then you can gradually up the speed of it. Don't start off trying to play it faster with a horrible picking technique and you'll learn it sooner rather than later! Also, this can pretty hard to learn if you happen to be a lefty but playing/picking with the right hand. But trust me, it will finally make sense to your pick hand if you keep practicing it.

why is everyone saying the code is so hard, just play the triad progressions over and over until you get the changes right then you can just basically arpeggiate them and do the pull offs and such. Not that bad.

Am I crazy or is it easier just to barre the chord when you move up the scale on the intro part? Just for reference, I may not know the terminology so if what I am saying doesn't make sense I can clarify. The part Carl shows in the beginning: the picking pattern isn't hard nor the chords, it's the speed. If I barre the chord it is way faster and it doesn't sound different to me because only 3 strings are played even with the hammer on.

As someone who has been playing for only two months and coming from ukulele your video was amazing. I can play it at around half ish speed if not a little more but can’t seem to get any faster than that and have trouble with the fast transition from 3rd to 4th chords

The chord progression is fairly simple/conventional. It’s the execution that makes this song superbly unique, but also difficult.

This is one of the only tutorials I've seen that gets the final arpeggio in the riff right (the second to last note, fretted at 4 on the A string).

Getting the picking up to speed is the most difficult part. The rest is easy

As someone who has been playing for only two months and coming from ukulele your video was amazing. I can play it at around half ish speed if not a little more but can’t seem to get any faster than that and have trouble with the fast transition from 3rd to 4th chords

I can kinda play it but.. sloppily. Ill be back sometime later this winter just gonna build up some "strength" and stretch these fingers out hahah. I'm only 10 weeks in my guitar journey. It just feels uncomfortable like i need to get these thangs stretched out and build some more strength. Ill be back 😎

Im not completly abandoning this though. I will remember a couple chords and practice the pattern randomly every day. Just not gonna put it together as a song more like training until I feel ready
This song might finally push me over the edge to learn alternate picking instead of going James Hetfield on every riff.
