On the other hand when it comes to heart and soul, creativity, and innovation then JF and Hendrix are easily in the top 5. Hendrix is without a doubt by far the most influential guitarist of all time, anyone who tries to dispute that my ears will just automatically shut off to them.
He didn't take a break from the band to recover from drug addiction, he couldn't handle the level of fame achieved after BSSM and quit the band struggling with depression and that led to his lowest point of addiction.
Bas Capel Note to self 📝 Read articles more thouroughly. But i did read an interview saying that Frusciante was inspired to do more drugs around that time by Flea. He used to be stoned on stage a lot apparently.
What I've always loved about Frusciante is the fact that he doesn't show-boat, like most guitarists do, and instead, he plays what is required for the moment (That's why Flea and John have such chemistry. Whenever Flea has the melody, Frusciante supports the music, and vice versa).
The Chili Peppers were always a decent band, but they became superstars with Frusciante. To me, he is the Chili Peppers signature sound, and with him, they produced their best albums. The Italian stallion can flat out play that “gee-tar” like a God.
You have to give Halal credit too man. He probably would’ve became a legend too had he not died so young before RHCP got big. He was already amazing at guitar and was only gonna get better.
@@AndyJay1985 yes, he’s truly an under appreciated musician in a giant band…all because he died young from drugs. Truly sad shit. I’d say a big percentage of people who call themselves RHCP fans, don’t even know who Hillal is…
John Frusciante is like the Steve Jobs of the Red Hot Chili Peppers! Although not a founding member, he joined the band early on, and put them on the map. Then when he rejoined years later (with his newly found minimalist approach), he took the band to unbelievable heights, and the rest is history!
@stephentherarabear Have to disagree with ya about the hendrix comment, john could play hendrix's full discography fluidly before joining rhcp, it's like, why they chose him to be in the band. and some his recordings with rhcp are TOTALLY on hendrix's level in terms of technicality/musicianship. see exhibit A: the end of the song Turn It Again. John uses far more restraint than hendrix, but always for the higher purpose of what he's trying to convey in the song; like, just because he's not shredding the whole time doesn't mean he couldn't if he wanted to. I am biased though, Frusciante changed my life, and basically got me into understanding music as an art form that can rock your soul to the core of it's very being lol. I've been playing guitar for ~15 years now (fuck i'm old lol) and it's a huge part of who I am...might not totally be that way if it wasn't for John. I totally consider him to be Hendrix 2.0. Think about it this way, Hendrix passed away when he was 27, and John is turning 60 soon, so just the cumulative experience of playing guitar WAY longer than Hendrix was able to, puts him in another category imo.
To be fair i hardly consider him a guitarist anymore. He's more of an all around artist. I think is solo work is severly underrated but that also makes it very special. John really means what he plays and writes.
Good point. It’s totally pointless to discuss if he belongs in the top ten of the best guitars of all times. Maybe he is - maybe he isn’t. Who cares…he is one of the greatest musicians in popular music. Ever. Period.
Nah, anyone who is manipulating the strings of a guitar is channeling his energy into it. Whether or not it makes beautiful sounds is a matter of opinion.
John Fruciante is one of the finest guitar player ever....his contribution to guitar music is in similar level of Jimmy Page, Mark Knofler, Slash, Jimmy Hendrix, Eric Clapton, David Gilmore in context of contribution to a song. His solo in Scar tissue is an achievement of humanity, as it is one of the finest musical expression of emotions in history...it is like the entire human consciousness has precipitated towards that moment of 28 seconds of perfection.

Paweł L Yeah, you're probably referencing the boat interview so I'll expand on that a bit. Anthony came to John with a riff that was very basic and was like "this is cool" and John didn't think so until he thought on it some more and decided the rhythm was nice to it, he changed up the melody and expanded on it to make it what it is now. I love the architecture that goes on behind songs like this.
i'm referencing to Kiedis' autobiography, but yes - that shows how Frusciante hears melody even in not the best in the world Kiedis' guitar skills :D He's great musician.
Anthony came up with the rhythm, but not the actual riff per se. He was massing it out on the low e string, without knowing how to play guitar. John laughed it off at the time, but what Anthony played stuck in his head rhythmically. He then played it in key, not just bashing random notes on guitar, and we got the awesome riff.

One of the only guitarists that I can think of that actually deserves to make all of the different 'faces' full of emotion when playing. Another thing is he's not afraid to explore all directions and experiment. Simply put, most guitarists play the guitar to alter and bring out their emotions. John uses his emotion to bring out the guitar and alter it. He doesn't play guitar chords and notes. He plays raw emotion.
That stuff about his technicality is spot on. Reminds me of Richards and Wood, super strong players who never get credit for it because they prioritize quality over complexity, and often the simple stuff is the sweetest.
I've always loved his work in the "By The Way" album, it is just so tasteful; indeed it seems like every note counts, masterful, and so many different and diverse sounds. Not that the rest of their albums together since BSSM are any less great (that heart-wrenching solo in "I Could Have Lied"...) Come back for a couple more albums John! Josh stays as well, win-win!
He also was a huge Hendrix fan growing up. He talks about how he was a kid and would amaze people by playing Hendrix songs. You can hear a lot of his inspiration in his music as well.
I love Frusciante. His solo albums are so emotional & his guitar playing is superb. I also wish Ataxia came out with more albums, I think that is also some of his best.
The best guitarist in existence- period. Listen to every song RHCP did during his time on their albums. Then pick one- maybe Scar Tissue- and find as many live versions as you can. It’s never the same song because he’ll change it; improvise... his solos reflect his emotion at the time. His guitar work live is MASTERFUL. The way that Flea and Chad Smith- also at the very very top of their respective instruments (maybe even the best)- have to play at a level 20 to Jan with him- is insane. I don’t give a fuck about the words in their songs or ANY AK singing. Fuck- just make them an instrumental band! His guitar speaks directly to a person. An absolute badass!
Oh there's lots of 'best' things backed by science. When it comes to styles though, its all a matter of taste. Its not relative, its just what you prefer.
I think what makes Frusciante great , as with all my favorite guitar players,is that although he may not be as "technically advanced" as some, I can "FEEL" what he's playing in just that one note. I consider that far more valuable than any other musical ability/talent. I think it's great that possibly he doesn't know every little "scale" that tends to be robotic, cold, stale and utterly useless...he creates moods and conveys feeling and emotion above technicalities. Bravo! Viva Frusciante!🤘✊👊
Great work as usual Lie. John is one of my favorite guitar players; he plays so evocatively with so much passion. A true inspiration. As for which artist/band would be cool to see next, I would love to see a video detailing the significance/impact of a cult classic such as Velvet Underground, Big Star, or The Replacements, and how these artist(s) hovered in relative obscurity while igniting a massively influential reputation. Keep up the awesome work man, it's been awesome to witness your channel grow in popularity and reception as it is much deserved.
Noah Kankanala Hey Noah. Long time, no talk. Hope everything is well over there. And yes, very few people match his intensity and passion for guitar playing. It's easy to see that in the way he's animated while playing. And talking about the next video topic, there's a high possibility i might do The Velvet Underground. Have gotten a lot of requests of that one. It also ties together with the videos i've already made about Bowie and Iggy who were highly influenced by them 🤘 Take care man.
As a musician a lot of these explanations kinda irk'ed me in their simplicity, but looking from an outsider POV I think this was a great explanation made for a wider audience than just musicians, good job on the vid man.
To be honest it's a lot of bedroom "musicians" that don't understand this stuff. So I can see why things have been simplified. I see many people bashing John's playing because they can't comprehend that the guitar can be used for more than just shredding scales and sweeping arpeggios. Who knows, any that may come across this will finally get what makes him, and the band as a whole, so great.
I love Frusciante (Solos like Turn It Again, Hey, Don't Forget Me, If You Have To Ask, Central, Before The Beginning, I Could Have Lied) but sometimes i'm not fan of his improvisation in live songs (with exceptions like Don't Forget Me Slane Castle and a Couple Of Scar Tissue)
I couldn’t agree more. I’m 37yrs old, picked up a guitar 31yrs ago and haven’t sat it down. I think the video explained what John does best, and that is saying a lot with very little. Music is written for everyone, not just musicians. Take Ingwie for example, he’s technically so advanced and while I respect him, his music doesn’t touch my soul, as I’m sure most non musicians would have a similar sentiment. What John does is easy while at the same time very difficult. Personally I would rather hear that any day. Also take into account that when your back by such an amazing rhythm section as flea and Chad, you have the room to sit back and play sparsely. Soul to squeeze is a great example of flea’s bass being out more in the front with John painting in the details that bring it together nicely
Loving this channel man, Frusciante is one of my all time favourites! Love the majority of his work w/ RHCP and solo (with the exception of maybe the last few solo records) and Curtains and The Empyrian are all time classics! Please keep the vids coming and Tame Impala would be awesome next!
Yeah... he can definitely play some incredibly technical parts when he wants to, but I would agree with the video that that's not the aspect of his playing that he's most known for. In my opinion his real genius is his ability to pare the guitar back to be very simple yet extremely powerful both melodically and rhythmically. He's got a fluidity to his playing where he seems to be unconsciously hyper aware (if that makes any sense) of what everyone else is doing and he steps up to the forefront and then steps back into the shadows so seamlessly within the context of everything else that's going on.
Excellent! RHCP fan from the start, got some old cassette tapes bought in San Diego. And yes John is something else , I've checked out his solo work, it's okay but still wish he will be back with his mates. One of the best guitar players ? Yes!! So is Flea the best on bass!! Loved to watch this, nice gesture the blueprint essay, ( wish I had more time) good luck with that! Tx ✌😊
Jacqueline Diesel Cassette tapes? Are those of their first albums? Sounds interesting. Have you listened to one of his solo albums called Curtains? It's said to be a masterpiece by some music critics. Thanks for taking the time to write and watch! Always love to hear from you.
He is one of the Greatest Guitar Player of all time, producing meaningful music is the greatest skill one can master.....:) He is what Shredders will develop into once they understand emotional aspect of sound:)
The video essay blueprint rules: 1) Copy from other successful people. I mean literally just take other people’s stuff and use it. 2) You’re a master now. Go make a shitty, vague, rambling and ultimately misleading video course of the above rule in 10 distinct videos. Make sure to give one out and charge the rest 50 bucks each.
Lie Likes Music Idk, in one of the tibe videos..I've watched several and he mentions it a few times...I think he says in the "bedroom" recording when he's sitting on the floor...sry, can't be bothered to look for it now..
Kickin a long time. One of a kind. These guys are cool as hell man. Spit truth too. “Space May be the final frontier, but it’s made in a Hollywood basement.” ♥️
Although you're point on with John Fursciante's versatility in playing different musical roles in songs , the band's communication and connectivity to each otheralso plays a very vital role in sustaining and further developing artistic expression. They're like a family , they have this understanding amongst each other which allows them to express themselves in a way where each of them give spaces for the other to fill in. Red Hot Chilli Pepper's greatest strength is their bond with each other, they're quite an inspiration.
Oh i didn't mention that in the video? That's absolutely true. They have a chemistry both as people and as musicians that benefit them greatly. It really shows in what they do. Thanks for highlighting that.
There sure is a lot of people that don't see his "genius" that's true. People seem to think that he just copied what Hendrix did. And sure maybe he used his techniques and playing style, but that doesn't mean he didn't have the genius to use them exceptionally.
Jam sesh with flea and Omar Rodríguez López was special. Also the song Take the veil cerpin taxt and The song that's one long solo that he wrote for his friend who passed away are among my faves.
I think John is one of the greatest guitarist mostly underrated as guitar hero, every note he play sound like ... John Frusciante and this is not a matter of techiqe; is a matter of love, spirit and soul, is magik, is music ...
Probably because he was talking about the *dead* Kennedy's and did a Google image search that led him to a picture of the grateful *dead* . just a theory

He also was a huge Hendrix fan growing up. He talks about how he was a kid and would amaze people by playing Hendrix songs. You can hear a lot of his inspiration in his music as well.
I'm always having a hard time explaining people why I think John Frusciante is really really good at what he does. You captured it very nicely.
I love Frusciante. His solo albums are so emotional & his guitar playing is superb. I also wish Ataxia came out with more albums, I think that is also some of his best.
Frusciante's creativity is top notch. He makes the guitar blend so well with the song.
Mike Kochenderfer yes this describe perfectly why i think he is so great
Mike Kochenderfer the whole live set at Slane Castle in 2003 is a perfect example of that. One of the greatest guitarists of all time.
There is no 'best' guitarist- period.
there is absolutely no such thing as the Best anything in Existence...all things are relative...
.
Oh there's lots of 'best' things backed by science. When it comes to styles though, its all a matter of taste. Its not relative, its just what you prefer.
John is one of my major influences for guitar. He made me learn to appreciate and incorporate the doddlydoo
*doodlydoo
Frusciante is one of my heroes as a musician
One of the best guitarists of all time
Some people would do anything to be famous
John would do anything to undo being famous
I wish this video would become a 2 hour documentary
I could dig that. But there would need to be more original footage in here.
Thanks! My guitar hero, for sure. I credit him completely with the bands success.
No one plays like this Man, he is not human, he is a God of Rock. No one can deny this.
Yes. Not much music knowledge. Confidence and ignorance.
Soul to squeeze is a great example of flea’s bass being out more in the front with John painting in the details that bring it together nicely
that was great mate good job . john is one of the best he also studied music early in life bring more sophistication to the chillies
5:07 man I love Anthony😂 they all are such amazing people!
Great video. I'm so happy John is back in the band
“Frusciantee” lol
Carlos Jimenez apparently thats the correct way to pronounce it...
lolololol
Fru-shaan-tay
Flea would say it like that tho
1) FRU (Force Riverine Unit) + shanti (peace, harmony on sanskrit)
2) Fruit shun tea
3) F(chord)+roo+shanty
Loving this channel man, Frusciante is one of my all time favourites! Love the majority of his work w/ RHCP and solo (with the exception of maybe the last few solo records) and Curtains and The Empyrian are all time classics! Please keep the vids coming and Tame Impala would be awesome next!
"John Frusciante is not a technical player".
watches the Don't Forget Me guitar solo at La Cigale, France on UA-cam
xD
He doesn’t usually emphasize technique so it’s actually an accurate statement. John himself said that
I took it to mean he doesn’t focus on styles like Paul Gilbert, Steve Vai, etc.
He isn’t known for technical playing, that doesn’t make him less of a guitarist though
Yeah... he can definitely play some incredibly technical parts when he wants to, but I would agree with the video that that's not the aspect of his playing that he's most known for.
Now that he's back, I cannot wait to see how he does with the RHCP once again
The lead break in californication is straight out of purple haze
That intro seems familiar.
Angelo Villavicencio Stole it from Polyphonic 😈
Lie Likes Music If you're gonna steal, might as well get it from the best.
Lie Likes Music dislikes this video.
John Frusciante is an amazing musician
He sure is. What's your fav RHCP song?
@@LieLikesMusic mine is Soul to Squeeze
His solo career it's the same enjoyment as his RHCP era, it's so much mind-blowing
Yeah Curtains has some golden gems on it! It's incredible. Very talented guy for sure.
My favorite Fruciante solo is on Sexy Mexican Maid. It's simple but it just slides in perfectly....it Rocks!
yes! i love that song
thank you for putting this out. love it
Yes : Freaky Styley & one with no title, True Man Don't Kill Coyotes both Capitol records 1985.
You're a beautiful woman also :)
Tx Bep, I will check it out!
Jacqueline Diesel you're beautiful, notice me please :)
A vid about Frusciante without ever uttering one word about his solo work and only focus on his work with RHCP really is a special kind of BS.
*is what he thought until he realized a part 2 was coming*
Lie Likes Music oh good god, please do! I've watched this video 10 times already and I can't get enough
Lalchhan Bawitlung Hehe. Time to get a new dose of Frusciante.
Lie Likes Music Hurry 😆😆😆😆
Lie Likes Music f
He plays with passion. Truly my idol ❤️
I loved old RHCP
it really was like a different band later on , which I also love. I’m glad they held together and gave us so much to enjoy
i knew you were the shit from your previous videos but now i know you're also onto the good shit in life, god bless u dawg
I can hear serious Jimi Hendrix influence in his melodic playing
ua-cam.com/video/_pxMTXadCqI/v-deo.html
Yes THE MELODY, its the Melody as Hancock said and good feel, understanding just like a tortured classical master.
He is one of the Greatest Guitar Player of all time, producing meaningful music is the greatest skill one can master.....:) He is what Shredders will develop into once they understand emotional aspect of sound:)
The video essay blueprint rules:
1) Copy from other successful people. I mean literally just take other people’s stuff and use it.
2) You’re a master now. Go make a shitty, vague, rambling and ultimately misleading video course of the above rule in 10 distinct videos. Make sure to give one out and charge the rest 50 bucks each.
Benito Faggotini why?
I’m so happy I feel like I should give you a present for making this, thank you!! Love your channel
Johns solo album shadows collide with people is one of my favorite albums ever
Cool! Have you listened to Curtains? And if yes, what do you think about it?
Johns ability to get great tone puts him right up there also.
Radiohead and the Red Hot Chili Peppers are few of the good remaining popular modern Rock Acts recording music today.
I can agree with that. But there are more than just a few good bands. There's loads if you just look for them.
@@LieLikesMusic can you name some. I'm trying to find new music to listen to.
Excellent analysis! Nothing left out! Love it! Thanks for sharing!
the White Hendrix IMO
YohAquino2 no
thats SRV
SRV is much better... john mayer comes close, like a modern hendrix
Mayer is boring AF
you dare insult the MAYER ALMIGHTY?
and he is back
Intro copied from Polyphonic
Hrushikesh Shanware Oh yes! ✌️
Lie Likes Music and ur proud of it?
Hrushikesh Shanware I saw that too
Like word for word
I don't see anyone here criticizing John Frusciante for stealing from Jimi Hendrix.
YESS I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THISS
he's BAAACK!
Fuck yeaaaaah
this is just gold.. thanks so much man! keep doing these sorts of vids
Talk about bassist Cliff Burton
.....who is a better guitarist than Jon Frusciante lol
@@Hurtio Cliff for example. Besides he played the bass :D
dont disrespect Flea
0:55 that’s not the Germs nor Dead Kennedy’s but is 100% an image of the Grateful Dead live in concert
Hate to be a nerd and a troll, But F. was a big fan of Hendrix before rhcp and could paly most of his songs by 12yo or smth...
Really? Where did you find out about that?
Lie Likes Music Idk, in one of the tibe videos..I've watched several and he mentions it a few times...I think he says in the "bedroom" recording when he's sitting on the floor...sry, can't be bothered to look for it now..
He talks about playing Hendrix as a kid in this interview: ua-cam.com/video/z4pZOL0KUiI/v-deo.html
Thank you dude I wrote same comment. This guy just talking out his ass.
Lie Likes Music dude he say it himself he also said he learnt one entire album of his to show his dedication to his father.
and now he's back :)
I believe BSSM catapulted their fame. That is their seminal album IMO.
sugar sex blood magik? lmao
Kickin a long time. One of a kind. These guys are cool as hell man. Spit truth too. “Space May be the final frontier, but it’s made in a Hollywood basement.” ♥️
Nah it's made in Spacex'es labs eheheh
Frusciante kills it solo
A lot of people say positive things about his solo career. I can't say for myself if i like it yet though.
JF has written some of the most beautiful melodies known to mankind. And im talking about his solo stuff.
Here's the answer to the title question: not left handed
Thank you. Thank you. I'll be here all night
Ya, I had an existential heart palpitation for a moment...
A wonderful tribute. Well done.
mike einziger from incubus is the only other guitarist that i think could possibly sound really good with RHCP.
Yeah you don't like Josh?
JF is such an amazing musician. Tremonti is also an outstanding guitarist who seems to be underappreciated a bit.
00:54 A random still photo of the Grateful Dead live on stage.....
I know i caught that too lol. They must have googled pics of the Dead Kennedys and picked one that was actually the Grateful Dead lol
Haha. Good eye! It might even be a Warlock’s show.
They have a chemistry both as people
and as musicians that benefit them greatly. It really shows in what they do. Thanks for highlighting that.
One of the most underrated guitarists of all time.
There sure is a lot of people that don't see his "genius" that's true. People seem to think that he just copied what Hendrix
did.
Cool video! I noticed it on the Frusciante facebook group ^^
Appelmoes444 Hey that's awesome! Thank you for checking it out 👍😊
there's a jf group on fb????? Tell me the name! I have to be a part of it
Just search for 'john frusciante' in facebook groups! It's a closed group but you can be added :)
I think John is one of the greatest guitarist mostly underrated as guitar hero, every note he play sound like ... John Frusciante and this is not a matter of techiqe; is a matter of love, spirit and soul, is magik, is music ...
0:54 almost 100% sure that's the Grateful Dead
it is. wonder how someone could mix up the dead with RHCP
Was looking for this, bizarre.
yep just noticed this too
Yeeep
Probably because he was talking about the *dead* Kennedy's and did a Google image search that led him to a picture of the grateful *dead* . just a theory
He will always be an all time favorite of mine.
John is looking good, fantastic guitar player, reminds me of Hendrix’s playing style in many ways with the thumb on the e string
Ah i didn't notice that he used his thumb.
Excellent analysis and presentation. Thanks!!!
