Thank you to all who have contributed and acted as if the thousands of dollars spent this past year makes you a hobby expert, but as nice as the attention is to this hobby, some of us are ready for the short timers to go back to....well....whatever it is that's trending next.

    I'm already a subscriber and stumbled across this video this morning. It's a great story and made me think about the 1st Chrome card for a guy I PC, Paul Goldschmidt. He's not as talented as Trout but is a great player and has a chance at the HOF, also has a first chrome card in the 2012 set which is also an image of him greeting teammates with a big smile (one of those being his manager, Kurt Gibson). The value will never reach of those of Trout's but it will be fun to chase all of the parallels for significantly less than his rookie cards. Thanks Chris!

  • @montrealsports29
    @montrealsports29 3 роки тому +5

    The main thing I got out of this story is that Topps issues way too many different parallel versions of the same card. Actually, it's an interesting story. When I worked at a card store in the early '90s, my boss was buying up all the Brett Hull rookies he could find, but waited a few months before selling them because he knew that the price for that card was going to skyrocket, and he was right (and he didn't have to worry about any parallel versions).

    This video clearly illustrates that we are and have been in a junk wax era for many years, where card companies produce multiple varieties of the same card to increase sales. As for Trout while he is a great player he has never played in a world series and has only played in 1 divisional series in his entire career and his team lost all 3 games played. Also the last winning Angel team he played on was in 2015.

    I would say that technically he hasn't taken "full advantage" of his investiment until he sells more of the cards. I also think it's odd that this strategy goes completely against Chris' strategy of hedging your bets and not sticking to just a single player. Sure, Trout is a G.O.A.T., and the dealer definitely made good deals, but let's face it, the dealer got extremely lucky that Trout never got injured and that the pandemic happened.

    • @silverwhale7474
      @silverwhale7474 2 роки тому

      Extremely lucky is to extreme and I'm not even sure I'd say lucky. Injury is a low % risk and highly likely he has serious return on this play regardless of pandemic (no doubt that helped). Success is when luck meets hard work 85% of the time anyway

    Don't know if you remember me telling you about the 1921 Ty Cobb card the guy had at a antique shop. Went to take picture and make a offer. Told me a man came in a week earlier and told him it was the most perfect 1921 Cobb he'd ever seen and could bring over 100k. He sent it to Becketts the next day to have it graded. Asked him if he would have taken 4500 (listed 5k). Told me that when I came in the botton line was 47. He still has Joe Jackson, Cy Young and some date back to 1911, 1913 and tons from the 1920s. Guess you win some and lose some in the card game.

Right away I had numerous bids and I looked at the highest bidders feedback and what he was purchasing as he had 1000's of recent good feedback ratings. At that time, he was buying up tons of Bryce Harper rookie cards and they weren't real cheap for those days. It made sense for stats before the internet, but not now. 2 perfect examples: 1982 Walter Payton 302 & 303. Pop on 303 is way lower, and it's the coolest picture EVER, but prices way lower. Also, Magic Johnson 1981 #21 & 109. Both are more or less the same picture. Pop way less on 109, but prices double for 21. Why?!??!

From Honus Wagner to certain inserts, take your pick. These should ultimately hold better value than one of infinite parallels (PMG, black, gold, and color match excepted).

    Would he take a personal check for all of them? Wow pretty impressive. My investment is, I bought some high grade Jim Kaat cards years ago. Now worth considerably more.

    As a former collector I dont see a large market for 2nd year cards if the player is not a Yankee. Not a Yankee fan but just looking at what I saw at shows I used to attend. Yankee fans end up driving the market on NON rookie cards.

    My only problem with this estimate, there just isn't a big enough market for 2nd year Trouts to sell all of them.

    Buying 2nd year cards, of hall of fame players, isn't a bad alternative. For me, I'm also intrigued, in the last year. There are cards that come after the fact, but everyone knows when Mickey Mantle (for example), last year was.

    That's why I buy 1989 Score Young Superstars Ken Griffey Jr, it's a glossy limited edition rookie of the greatest star from his era with no ties to the steroid era (Jeter is 2nd) and it's still cheap. I bought a few 10's in the 100-150 range, 9's for under $50, raw for under $20. I see this as a potential ten bagger for sure, the pop report is a couple thousand. I missed out on 2nd year Gretzky, they were so cheap but I don't know hockey and thought I was missing something. I probably only missed low grade examples for a buck.

    This is typical in the comic book market. When the first appearance of a comic book is out of reach for most they look for the 2nd and 3rd appearance of the comic book character. The difference in the hobby is that there can be dozens of different rookie cards for the individual by different companies whereas its typical to be only one or so of the comic appearance nice information

    I correctly identified this card, but missed the key component of chrome. I bought a graded copy of the paper a while back. I’ve seen nice gains but nothing like the chrome :( oh well, I’ve since learned my lesson several times over lol

    That's a borderline obsession vs just going after an undervalued card, but it paid off. I love stories like this, he definitely went all in. I would be curious to know why he didn't sell some of these when things got crazy?

    I wonder how this will look in 10, 20 years. I really think that cards will cycle like other volitile speculative markets. They always have to some extent but recently cards have gained a lot of attention, although I believe there is much more attention to be had. For example, I was really into cards a few years ago, but over the past couple of years I've been pretty non interested in cards but still online all the time and exposed to many similar markets, but I really did not know what was happening, I had almost no idea of the massive surge in attention and prices, so if someone like me was unaware of what was happening then surely the majority of the world was too, so you would think there is plenty of room for growth still. If so, perhaps there will be many more full cycles with more and more attention. Maybe what happened over the past couple years is just a glimpse of what's to come, or at least one of many more repeating patterns. I think putting yourself in position for another manic card run in the future will likely pay off.

    Pet peeves. Stuff about the hobby that really gets under your skin. My current pet peeve is purchased cards arriving with the holder sealed with transparent tape. It's difficult to peel away and leaves a sticky residue that is almost impossible to get off...

    You mentioned for many of the refractor versions he had 20 to 30% of all the cards that exist. I’m wondering if this would give him market power in pricing? The card was previously under value, but now he owns so many of the existing copies he might actually be able to price higher and demand a premium.

    Any players/cards you see as similar to this situation, undervalued by a good bit? Myself, I have been accumulating Clemens rookie cards past 6 months (both graded and non graded). He seems stuck in the mud. Excluding the Tiffany card card values are close (+/- 15%) to the values seen back in 2008 ish time period while just about all other similar caliber type players are considerably higher.
