Space travel in the Dune-iverse is the entire reason that the spice is so valuable. They cross galaxies by folding space and traveling faster than the speed of light. The problem is that the calculations required and the process itself is very complex and extremely dangerous. That's where malange (the spice) comes in. Navigators snort spice which expands their perceptions and lets them calculate safe passage. Over time, using spice deforms the physical bodies of navigators. The old navigators don't even look human, and are often held in a sealed bubble as they literally float in a cloud of spice gas. Great reaction guys!
Yes, mentats are a thing at this time. The show just hasn't made use of them yet. They also haven't shown the Guild navigators or the swordsmaster school. (I'd like to see more about the Suk doctors of this time, as well.)
It's a funny thing. Tula gave her baby away to keep him away from Valya's machinations and political intrigue. But Tula's child ended up smack in the middle of the Atreides/Harkonnen feud.
The show had to cut down on the # of episodes due to the Hollywood strikes in 2023. Overall it's got potential, and I liked it OK as a mix of stronger and weaker elements, it's season 2 where they have the chance to really shine. So I hope it'll improve with more room to breathe, since like y'all say, there's space for more depth here, not just the kind of "Game of Thrones" shorthand everyone's used to at this point with HBO clichés they sometimes fell in.

They dont just snort it, they live in it! They "swim" in tanks of spice gas it even changes how they look.
Desmond knocked Theodosia out but didn't kill her. On Desmond's orders, she is in the suspension cell now.
The lady with the jewel on her forehead is a Suk doctor.
Like Dr. Yueh from the original story

Valya is so cold

And for all her faults, Valya truly does love Tula. I don't know what to think about how she would've viewed her nephew.
