For photos, i keep them all because im afraid that if i take digital pics of it and have a usb or its all in my laptop or desktop comp, it will be erased or deleted accidently or comp gets a virus and its all gone 😒
My only advice as someone who is older is declutter slowly. There are so many things I’ve decluttered that I would pay ten times the amount to get back. In the spring our daughter quarantined with us. We pulled out and used beautiful tablecloths, crystal etc that had been handed down to me and I was going to sell. Now, every so often I pull these things out usually when our daughter visits. They make ordinary occasions seem extraordinary. Instead of decluttering, I do declutter but very deliberately, I make myself use or wear things I might have gotten rid of. I have become more cautious about what I bring in and I’ve identified what I do and don’t like and why. If I buy it I have to use it like it or not.
I have the same issue, so I started using it or losing it. I found that I was of the "save it for a special occasion" mentality. So my lovely things were just gathering dust. If I put it on and don't want to wear it, or get out an item and don't want to use it, I donate it. I know selling things would help me recoup some of my money, but it's too tempting to just keep them if they don't sell.
If it sparks joy, you keep it. Joy, not something else dressed up as joy by our minds. I see a lot of ppl commit to the Konmari approach to decluttering, and then try to make joy, out of many of the things CM discussed here in this vid. Especially with items they’d totally forgotten. You don’t need to justify joy.
You just exude a happier being. You are constantly smiling. Please look at some of your old vids, this process for you has been obviously fabulous for you mentally.
We did the 30 day declutter this January (and made mediocre videos on UA-cam to keep ourselves accountable haha) and honestly the hardest part was just feeling the "waste guilt"...so much stuff we should never have bought that we not only spent money on, but those items took resources, some of which went to landfill and for "stuff" we didnt even truly need 😥 Pledging to do better and try a serious no-buy going forward...love your channel, it's great motivation!
I suffer from the 'just in case' and the 'oh this is so nice!'. :(. I'm getting there though - slowly but surely. I just donated a whole bag of various items throughout our apartment and just this week I am finding more things to declutter and donate. This week it's kitchen items. xoxo
I really love these insights you shared! One of the biggest lessons I learned from another UA-cam channel (A Small Wardrobe) is that most stuff loses its monetary value the longer we keep it. If we're holding onto things that no longer serve us or no longer bring us joy, then the value of that item will continue to deplete and it'll just take up space. This has helped me put the idea of stuff owning us in a whole new perspective. Stuff shouldn't own us or be an extension of our identity; we should be the owner and decision maker of what we allow into our lives :)
After several decluttering rounds and getting rid of my fantasy self, which hurted badly, I stick to the method "everything that isn't "hell, yes" is a no" for the difficult decisions. That my help you?!
100% guilty of the “so nice” comment. All. Day. Long. I have heard my mom say it so many times in my childhood when we would go through our things for a garage sale. And now I find myself doing it as an adult! Now my sweet mother is battling a huge basement full of things she spends an inordinate amount of time decluttering in her retirement. We are learning together to unlearn these behaviors!
I'm in pharmaceuticals and appreciate your videos even more knowing your a pharmacist because it is a rigorous demanding job and I enjoy how organized and clear your content is!
I've decluttered so much over the years and continue to do so on a regular basis. I've actually found it pretty easy to get rid of the "expensive" stuff because the resale value has been decent. I think what I struggle with most are "cool but useless" items like tiny vintage bags that fit NOTHING inside but are just sooo cute even to look at so I've actually started using them as home decor and they bring me joy that way.
Thank you so much for this video. I've been decluttering for years and right now I'm entering a new chapter of my life and I feel like I'm in my final stage of decluttering (for now). I've been feeling a lot of fear and your words and tips calmed me down and helped me a lot. 💙
I've been watching your channel for a couple of years now. You come across very sincere and natural. You have grown so much and I've enjoyed going through the process with you. This video is my all-time favorite one from you :) .
What a difference in you since I began following you on youtube last year! I was interested in your journey to become debt free and dealing with an impulsive shopping habit. I identified totally. I have spent a lot of time evaluating why I shop unnecessarily and have begun to identify and avoid the triggers for me. Thanks for sharing so openly on your channel. You have helped me a great deal!
Definitely needed this. I cleaned out my closet Sunday and literally have so many bags. Either gifts or bags I’ve had 5+ years. I didn’t put it in a donate pile. I kept them and thought I could get rid of them later. This video helped me so much, thank you!!
One thing that made it way easier for me to let go of my clothes specifically is giving them to mutual aid organizations! It changed the question of keeping something from 'will I ever wear this again?' to which the answer is a wishy-washy 'probably', into 'would someone else be happier to have this than me?' to which the answer is YES and made me excited to put it in the hands of a new person.
I can relate to « having a hard time decluttering expensive items » for me that was my Michael Kors handbag which ive had for years and i just kept it because i liked the colour, the look and also because it was expensive. After seeing it everyday in my closet accumulating dust, I realised i can sell it or give it to away to someone that will actually wear it. Thank you for the tips!
As someone who has seen many videos of this style, this one actually helped me in my thought process about sparking joy! I've never heard someone else talk about the murkiness that can come with determining if something actually has deep value to us. Thanks for the tips, can't wait to go tackle my closet now and get rid of the few pieces I have that are gorgeous to look at but not on me. 😂
Hi there! This video is amazing and gets to the heart of why decluttering is hard. I just shared it in my own decluttering group on Facebook and I’m looking forward to hearing what done of the discussion points will be. You’re very insightful!
Some of the items I let go today, the style was 1) outdated, not my style as I'm not in young 20s 2) clothes I'm not wearing for 5-10 years! I let go of them finally. Though their quality was perfectly fine, I knew I would never wear them. I'm leaving maybes but I should let go of old items that I don't like so much... I agree with giving chance/time to "I could" items!
Thanks for your video! I move from country to country every few years, thanks to my God-given mission. As a minimalist, I always downsize my belongings to a couple of suitcases, before next move. Having lived already for 3,5 years in the same place, I am surprised again how much stuff I have collected, although I am living in a furnished apartment. Fortunately, I still have plenty of time, to go through my things. This time, I have started listing down my belongings, using different subcategories, like "books", "clothes", "dishware" etc. It actually helps me a lot, to make decisions, which things I will take with me for sure and which I won´t.
I’ve been decluttering .. it’s not easy but I have little space and too much stuff I no longer use.. thanks for the video!! I strive to not be a “hoarder” type person but sometimes I accumulate too much clothes that I may wear or crafts stuff I may use..
Decluttering is surprisingly hard. I had to do it because I moved into a smaller place. I'll admit even in my big place the amount of stuff i was gathering was starting to agitate me, so when I first started purging it was kind of easy but i felt a lot of guilt about how wasteful i had been, it's almost a bit embarrassing that i did that, because before I moved into a big house, i never really had a lot of stuff. Anyway, Now I'm living in a unit, and even though I hope to get into a proper house again someday when circumstances allow, i decided to use this unit space as a benchmark to be realistic about what i need so I'm still decluttering. I really had to think about what brings me joy and what is there because it's just ok. The main places I've had to adjust my thinking on is the kitchen and my closet. I don't know if my goal is minimalism as it is portrayed on UA-cam but it definitely feels better being rid of all that stuff and I need to make sure i don't do that again.
I love your videos. You put so much thought into them. Have you thought of doing a livestream where people can chat with you? I know it must be challenging with your schedule!
I face a problem while decluttering: I kind of said goodbye to items and listed to re-sell and no one buys them and they still keep a place in the room and annoy me 🌝
I’m trying to be strict with this. 30 days to sell cheaper stuff and after 30 days I have to aggressively lower the price of the good stuff until it sells. Something is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it.
@@mysticfox1563 I agree! I usually go 1) Depop - if it doesn’t sell in 2 weeks then 2) consignment 3) friends and family get to pick through the rest! 4) donate as a last possible option, but I try to avoid this as much as I can since a lot of it doesn’t end up being sold there either
Once something has exhausted my patience I list it for $1 on ebay (buyer pays full postage obvs) and it almost always sells right away 🤣 Having said that, I live 400 meters from the post shop so it's not an arduous task for me 😏
Same! I just want to satisfaction of owning less things, and I want it now! I've definitely just given up and donated things that could have been sold if I had been more patient before... All the more motivation to be more intentional about my buying!
I had to stop mid way of watching this... I love the idea of the "I could" challenge! We obviously liked the item (definitely enough to buy it) but haven't used it. I have been having this particular issue with one specific adorable pair of shoes!!!!
Yes! When you said the item you forgot in your closet, you won't think about it when it's decluttered either I was like damn that is too true! I've abandonned the idea of a capsule wardrobe because I wear a ton of colour so I have a lot of items in very different colours (but the same scheme so my blues, burgundys, mustards, purples, greens... all go together :D). But the more time passes and the more I let go of things that are perfect but ONLY if I go to a party, or things that are the basics that everyone should have but that I litteraly never choose out of my options (like the small black dress that every woman should have :o) Also decluttering gets easier the more you do it so i'm better at it now than I was 5 years ago (including for not attaching too much feeling to a piece of clothing, a thing
Decluttering my books 😩 Literature has had a huge impact on my life, so collecting books whether I read them or not has been my struggle. 😬BUT I am getting A LOT better. I now try to ask myself will I re-read this? Also I am trying go through the library more which makes it’s a fun challenge cause I’m on a deadline to return the book by a certain date. If I end up loving the book and want to re-read it I put it on my future purchase wish list. I’ve only recently started this ,but it’s working! Also audiobooks in this season of my life has been amazing 🙌🏽
The expensive items are definitely a big one for me, as are pieces that were given to me as a gift or that were bought for me because they thought I'd love it or that it was a staple I needed to have (looking at you, black trousers and white button ups!). But the hardest one are clothes I used to love. Like shirts that have fallen out of the rotation or jeans I wore all the time and don't anymore. They always have so many good memories attached, but they don't fit my style anymore (usually because it's a cut I preferred and now don't like on me), and I end up having a lot of trouble letting go of it. My closet is full of clothes I used to love and never wear anymore. But I can't bring myself to give them away. It's very difficult.
I definitely struggle with the pricey items or brand new items I have that I really didn’t use much. I’ve learned not every item can be sold, but it’s also a nice item so throwing it out is difficult. I try to re-home my nicer items to friends & family who will actually use them.
I'm a victim of "just in case" items. Some basic items like a white button-up tee, white t-shirt, or black dress aren't my style but then I think but I saw so and so wear them in a video and they looked nice!
Everything 🙈 it’s getting easier and easier though and for each round there’s more things I can finally let go of. As someone else said, it’s a lot of letting go of the idea of who you are and what the things represent.
I love you are a pharmacist, that would make you a little less than a demi-god with my family, both of my parents are pharmacists too, they are pretty fanatic over this, especially my mom. They still salty because I choose to be a lawyer tho. Great video as always!
Could you do a video on decluttering during the pandemic? We have so much stuff now that we don't use since we aren't going out as much and it makes it harder to determine what is valuable and useful!
I had a hard time with this too because the pandemic means we use less items in our daily life (work clothes etc). I am afraid of seller's remorse later if I sell something that I actually would need in post pandemic time.
I had a really hard time letting go of some of my books. I re-visited them week after week. The "will I read this again?" question helped, but some books I will keep whether I re-read them or not, other books I wasn't sure, and others still, were books that I so enjoyed that just looking at them made me nostalgic. But was that a good reason to keep them on my shelf? Then I thought, "well, would I be willing to read this as an ebook?" If my answer was yes, then I'd declutter the actual book. I'm not sure replacing a book with an ebook counts as decluttering, but it has cleared up a large swath of my bookcase.
one note i will give: sometimes you need occasion pieces! for example, i dont wear my white button ups ever, except during the jewish holidays where since im in syhagogue for sometime multiple days, i need two nice shirts to wear. dont feel guilty about this!
The way I declutter name brand expensive stuff is to give them as gifts to my best friend and mother in law. As a minimalist, I didn't want any purses etc. that show what brand I was wearing/carrying. Now I only buy items that don't display the brand, my only purse is from Banana Republic now and it has no logos on the outside. I think our value comes from the way we carry ourselves.
I have a hard time with decluttering shoes, purses and clothes - it is the just in case, I coulds that get in the way - that and I like them all but don’t use them !
I never had expensive items, almost everything I own is second hand or from a thrift store. I was able to declutter most possessions pretty easily as I don't get sentimental about clothing or housewares, etc. My issue has been getting rid of things in an ethical manner so I am not adding to landfills. The nearest thrift store is a 2 hour drive away & under our current lockdown.... I have given away as much as possible. I own very little....and yet I still find myself looking for things that I can let go of. I own 40 clothing pieces and a kitchen place setting for 4. We have a total of 11 furniture items in our entire house. We have very little tech (phones & 1 laptop). I would like to declutter further, but my husband is uncomfortable decluttering further, so I have slowed to give him time to adjust.
For me it’s not so much how much I’ve already spent on the item, but it’s “is it worth storing for a bit until I can potentially use it? Or is it better to declutter it and perhaps repurchase if needed in the future?” . I say this as a new mom of a ten month old, who is currently 6 month pregnant with my second. It’s hard to see my old clothes and think of fitting into them anytime soon, so I want to purge them (especially as I get in nesting mode), but I know that I will need/want them by this time next year and be annoyed I didn’t keep stuff. But in the meantime, clutter and things I’m not using regularly take up space and it makes me nuts sometimes! Edit: all this to say, I think “where you’re at in life/where you think you will be in a year” should be considered when decluttering, but in a way that isn’t focused on your “fantasy self”, but rather a realistic projection of your near future
I really struggle getting rid of things I picked up traveling years ago. I never buy touristy/trinkety things when I travel, mainly art/wall hangings/pottery. So as my style evolves, I find that I don't want to display them but I also can't get rid of them. Same thing goes for anything I buy from antique stores. I'm working on letting go of them, because what's the point of keeping it in a box??
I don’t Declutter all my clothes if they are become old fashioned I just move them in an old storage and after years they do become trend again especially if they are expensive and made from sustainable material so I do shop them again , I feel they are prettier way more than go and buy them again
I feel this is actually a more sustainable way. The populist movement of minimalism is actually creating waste in our landfills as people are on a decluttering frenzy. Which defeats the whole point of being minimal. I think balance is the key along with being mindful of our landfills and the waste we are creating.
decluttering is hard as hell when you're disabled with chronic pain and fatigue and most recently carpal tunnel syndrome. like damn i need my hands and wrists of all things!
I’m so into those high end items which I stare at and ask myself but it’s so expensive tho then considering well it’s been sitting there so why not get rid of it. It’s a hard choice
I don't have a job right now so I'm trying to save what I can. How do you keep sane and not be bored during not working? I'm trying not to look on amazon.
I def try to find something that keeps you busy and makes you feel fulfilled! My UA-cam channel does that for me. For others it could be art, journaling, cooking, crocheting - lots of things like that 🥰
Do inside/outside sports, stretching, dancing, read books (some e books are even free, some classics), do research, watch documentaries, write down goals and try to achieve them, create art (writing, painting, sewing, songs, videos, movies...), DIY things (foods, your own recycled paper, your own inside garden...) and try to find a new job or side hustle, indulge in self-care... There are so many things. ❤️
If I'd use these rules my closet would only have 1/4 of the clothes! I told myself "You can keep this clothing piece right now but if you don't wear it the next 2 months it's going."
I do not de cluttered my things I just stocked some of those and use one at a time if the one I am using is already broken then I took another one to used so by that I don’t need to buy a new one
The thing is that I do have a lot of things that sparks me joy but these things don't fit me anymore because I have gained some weight during the corona strike what you recommended to do?
You seem so matter-of-fact about your material & sentimental items. Is that a learned response to decluttering or part of your personality? I’m trying to keep the Swedish Death Cleaning perspective but those sentimental items always trip me up 😭
Decluttering isn't hard if you use my method. Just advertise an indoor garage sale and tell everyone to point at any article and I'll put a great price on it. Easy method.
Honestly, I think a lot of my hoarding tendencies came from growing up in the lower socio-economic end of things. When you have less you try to hold on to more "just in case" because then you don't have to spend that money at a later time. Unfortunately, even after you clearly have more than enough and are no longer struggling financially, these habits of "waste not want not" turn into piles of junk and 20 extra pairs of pants you never wear.
I had no idea your were a pharmacist, very cool 😊 This is a great video. It can be really hard to let go of stuff. I definitely have a few “so nice” items in my closet that I need to let go of.
I have no problem getting rid off sentimental items and gifts bcos I just don't care anymore as I get older. none of that matters. they're mostly coming from bad memories oopps lol. i even sold gifts I got from my friend, so free money 😂 however I have a huge problem while letting go expensive items cos first of all I spend on my hard earn money for that. I wanna get at least half of what I paid. that's why every time I purchased something nowadays, I would ask myself if this can be sold in future?
I'm still holding on to two really expensive skincare products even though I don't use them and haven't for months. I'm on a specific skincare regimen from my dermatologist and I don't think I'll ever use them again but I just can't get myself to throw them out so they will continue to sit in my shower staring at me.

Omg the addition of the Smokey the Bear clip from the avalanche episode of the Simpsons killed me. Another reason you're awesome 👍
😂😂😂 YES - I live my life as a simpsons quote lmao
@@Christinamychas this is literally the best way to figure out who is friend worthy. If they don't get it, they are cut.
Lmaoooo legit how I met my BFF in pharmacy school 😂
Thank you! I have several pieces that I've been holding that i need to let go of.
I love your videos. You put so much thought into them. Have you thought of doing a livestream where people can chat with you? I know it must be challenging with your schedule!
Just in case is my fave. We have a lot of parallel fantasy lives we’ve shopped for, some of which we don’t even want!
I usually go
1) Depop - if it doesn’t sell in 2 weeks then
2) consignment
3) friends and family get to pick through the rest!
This is true for me too..
I had to stop mid way of watching this... I love the idea of the "I could" challenge! We obviously liked the item (definitely enough to buy it) but haven't used it. I have been having this particular issue with one specific adorable pair of shoes!!!!
So motivating! Love your ‘real’ personality.
Definitely needed this video right now since I am moving next month and need to decluttering big time thank you!
Good luck with the move! Yay a fresh start!
Yes, I filled in the pauze at 1:16 and said 'expensive things' in my mind. It really is the hardest!
Right?!
But the more time passes and the more I let go of things that are perfect but ONLY if I go to a party, or things that are the basics that everyone should have but that I litteraly never choose out of my options (like the small black dress that every woman should have :o)
Also decluttering gets easier the more you do it so i'm better at it now than I was 5 years ago (including for not attaching too much feeling to a piece of clothing, a thing
Haha I also got rid of my LBD. 😬
@@Christinamychas and it feels gooooood :D and liberating somehow
Decluttering my books 😩
Literature has had a huge impact on my life, so collecting books whether I read them or not has been my struggle.
I love that!
Things that I do love and get value from by they expire
My goal is to do a no buy for 6 months for clothes & shoes.
Could you do a video on decluttering during the pandemic? We have so much stuff now that we don't use since we aren't going out as much and it makes it harder to determine what is valuable and useful!
Totally!
I had a hard time with this too because the pandemic means we use less items in our daily life (work clothes etc). I am afraid of seller's remorse later if I sell something that I actually would need in post pandemic time.
Since you are a pharmacist, can you do a video about decluttering medication. Prescribed, over the counter and needles. Thank you!
OMG, you are a farmacist ❤, we have someting in common. And the minimalism thing..😊 glad to find you. Excuse my english.
Something that helps is "is this available at the library," then you can literally come back to it
Needed this video so much! Liked before even watching :)
one note i will give: sometimes you need occasion pieces! for example, i dont wear my white button ups ever, except during the jewish holidays where since im in syhagogue for sometime multiple days, i need two nice shirts to wear. dont feel guilty about this!
Another great video - really inspiring me to want to be more minimal with my stuff :)
Because I have a large space in which to store my clothes & accessories AND coz I'm not trend-driven more a 'collector' I find it harder to clear out.
Oh, yeah. Extra cool points for being a pharmacist. I work as a risk analyst for an insurance company, so I'm a little "brainy" myself.
Outstanding 👌❗️
You’re the cutest. Loved this video!
🥰
That’s such a good point!
Such a great video!! Thank you
I hope you still keep SL leather jacket 🥺it’s so great
Haha yes I kept that one but decluttered 2 other leather jackets 😬
style apotheca I’d do the same!
@@EmA-sm8se I totally agree with you
Beware of becoming an organized hoarder. Containers and other types of organization supplies may become graveyards for junk.
Love the lipstick! Which one is it? Lovely video. Thanks
It’s Mac Ruby woo x fenty freckle fiesta!
decluttering is hard as hell when you're disabled with chronic pain and fatigue and most recently carpal tunnel syndrome. like damn i need my hands and wrists of all things!
I had the surgery for carpal tunnel, it was life changing, I have no pain anymore,no more numbness, I don’t know why I waited so long
I like decluttering!!! But when it comes to donating a whole lot.... I get overwhelmed 😅.
Yes the getting rid of it part is tough! I think I’ll make a video on that too - reselling, swaps, up cycling etc!
@@Christinamychas Yes please!
I would keep some that spark that true joy but anything that stokes guilt for not having our “old body” needs to go!
You seem so matter-of-fact about your material & sentimental items. Is that a learned response to decluttering or part of your personality? I’m trying to keep the Swedish Death Cleaning perspective but those sentimental items always trip me up 😭
I have to check SDC out!
Yes please I want to experience skill share
Decluttering is hard because my family members won't let me throw their stuff out 😆
PennyLane979 A lot of Minimalists tell us to only control our own stuff.
@@dianneporter3350 I know, I'm joking ofcourse)
👍
Decluttering isn't hard if you use my method. Just advertise an indoor garage sale and tell everyone to point at any article and I'll put a great price on it. Easy method.
Great video… but the background music is very distracting.
My dad was a pharmacist ❤️
🥰🥰🥰
I had no idea your were a pharmacist, very cool 😊
This is a great video. It can be really hard to let go of stuff. I definitely have a few “so nice” items in my closet that I need to let go of.
🥰🥰
I have no problem getting rid off sentimental items and gifts bcos I just don't care anymore as I get older. none of that matters. they're mostly coming from bad memories oopps lol. i even sold gifts I got from my friend, so free money 😂 however I have a huge problem while letting go expensive items cos first of all I spend on my hard earn money for that. I wanna get at least half of what I paid. that's why every time I purchased something nowadays, I would ask myself if this can be sold in future?
Great question!
Another one is keeping things for best.
I'm still holding on to two really expensive skincare products even though I don't use them and haven't for months. I'm on a specific skincare regimen from my dermatologist and I don't think I'll ever use them again but I just can't get myself to throw them out so they will continue to sit in my shower staring at me.
I TOOOOOTALLY feel this - if they’re unopened you can sell them. There’s a market for that believe it or not!
@@Christinamychas unfortunately they are used which is why they are still in my shower :(
@@erineccentric5810 ah bummer!
