Thanks, Christina! 😁❤️Great insight that I can use to put my clothing, etc. in perspective. I have found that the more I have the more stressed out I feel 😐
These are great! One thing that has been A game changer for me (related to scarcity mindset) is realizing that you can love/like/apprecoate/admire things without having to own or consume them. When I saw something cute in the past, my default was to find it and buy it. Now it'S "hey that's cute PERIOD."
I relate to this video so much. I’ve been off IG for months and will continue the hiatus because watching everyone else’s lives, especially fashion and home bloggers, made me want to spend money all the time. I felt this desire to constantly acquire more of everything. I realized I was giving the content creators lots of my free time, but getting nothing in return except more stuff. Why was I so invested in the lives of people who don’t know me and are trying to sell me something? Breaking the cycle feels amazing.
When I want to abstain from spending money, I find what’s ‘wrong’ with the item I’m desiring. Very quickly, my mind will find what is faulty with the item and help me see why it may not be worth my money.
I am far from being a minimalist. However, every time I start wanting to buy things impulsively, I watch this kind of videos about minimalism and that desire of buying usually dissipates..
@Zoe that is such a good approach.... Interesting that you give the example of boots. It's been the same item for me! But I will probably buy them in one month, not three, since most of my boots are indeed in bad shape. Is this a rare case of actual need? 🤔
As a recovering shopping addict, what helped me was leaning into a new passion that didn't tempt me to constantly buy buy buy. For me, that was music; learning to play an instrument, exploring the Spotify verse and writing about my experiences with it, watching music critic videos, changing my social media/UA-cam grid away from fashion bloggers, learning more about music history through free online resources... Sure, I had to pay for instrument rentals and Spotify premium monthly dues and sometimes I treat myself to concerts, but it was nothing compared to constantly online shopping for the next best fashion item.
I first learned I was happy with less by moving to a place where my closet storage was about a third of my previous space. I stored most of my wardrobe, but soon realised that although I had less in my wardrobe I always had enough to wear and never suffered with decision fatigue. From that point on, I desired less as I knew it made me feel more at ease. My other lightbulb moment was when I started noticing a lot of brands creating an illusion of scarcity by having "limited drops" of items - you had to be ready and waiting with your credit card to grab the item. It dawned on me that setting my alarm for 1am to grab a "limited" item was just silly.
It was a great video and speaks to so many, especially young people. I too was in the “ buy mor” lifestyle when I was younger, but then real life happened. I was diagnosed with breast cancer and 2 years later,my husband suffered a major stroke. We both survived, but I had massive medical bills facing me. I learned quickly what’s important in life. I am 67 now and dress for comfort, I don’t watch channels that encourage the latest makeup or clothing trends. I have paid off all medical bills and am slowly rebuilding my savings. I’m happier and more content. Does this come with the aging process, who knows? You are very wise and I enjoy your channel.💕
@@kelleyking How kind of you, Kelley. After my breast cancer treatments were over, I reached out to all the doctors and labs that treated me and asked for a repayment plan. Everyone was so kind about it, there were a couple that weren’t, but they accepted what I could pay. My husband had lost his job at that time , but was able to help out and I had good insurance. Two years later, he suffered a major stroke which just wiped me out financially. I told everyone all I could pay was $25.00 a month toward repayment. He went through a lot of rehabs and hospitals and the bills kept climbing. My sons helped also. The hospital wrote off some and I had a friend that put everything on a spreadsheet and as I got one bill paid off, I used that $25.00 toward another. I finally finished last year. Now, I am re building my savings through setting aside money from each paycheck (I work full time) ,and we just live a very simple life. I try not to worry about the future except for say we are alive and together and we are very grateful.
Watching other UA-camrs unboxing videos has really helped me want less...designer purses specifically. I feel like these videos are tacky and it turns me off from wanting the bags.
I'm the same. I see those unboxing videos and just see clutter, excess, and mindless consumption. And then they display the orange shopping bag the actual bag came in as decor.
Here also. I see these enormous hauls and it overwhelmes in such a way I feel really good by not getting the stuff. And I feel stronger and more determined to not buy. I have one weekness that is jewellery. I don't buy custom so only quality things but still way more than I need. I do need to tackle this one😜.
Actually UA-cam used to be really triggering for me.. Even channels about sustainability that where doing capsule wardrobes etc. There were still always new things bc of sponsor ships involved and it always made me feel less of myself. I can 100% agree with you on the fact that when you find something that truly fills you, you stop searching for stuff to want! What helps me to want less is also to just be real about the stuff I really love, bc I tend to wear the same things anyways and so I don't need to foul myself by thinking I need more than that. Great video! 😊
So much here, spoke to what I felt but didn’t know - consuming mindlessly from boredom, not knowing what to do with myself, feeling stressed and restless, not knowing what feeds me… thank you for the reminder on self-exploration for what fulfils you!
I noticed that everything I buy that is above the point of my actual needs, ends up not only not „solving” ant problems but actually CREATING problems. It’s a true revelation for me!
The most helpful thing for me was a no buy year. It really became clear to me that I can get by with what I have, I have enough, my world won't get better with that sweater. Still mega hard resisting that panic of "omg if I don't get it now what if it goes" but I just think about all the things I "missed" during that year and my world didn't fall apart 🤷🏼♀️
Watching decluttering videos motivates me to declutter. I’ve started decluttering my huge Gymshark collection. It’s the only aspect of my life that isn’t minimal.
When it comes to books, more makes me happy (though I don't buy them mindlessly), but I've learned to be more minimal in other areas. A big influence for me was the environment, and how much the "spend-throw-away" mentality is adding to the issues.
I feel like as you get older and as you get more comfortable with who you are you realize that LESS is truly MORE. I’m still struggling with it but I feel like I’ve gotten so much better. It’s a work in progress and these points are so valid. Thank you 😊
This was a really interesting video thank you. It links to something that I really struggle with that I’d be curious for you to perhaps chat in a video about. I got into second hand shopping for sustainability reasons but it means everything is cheap and “limited edition” because of the fact it could be there today and gone tomorrow you can’t really think about the purchase so much. It’s developed a problem for me of searching for the ultimate thing - like once I find the perfect pair of jeans I’ll get rid of all the rest but I’m continually striving to find that one perfect thing. I guess it’s a continuation of consumerism with more of a pressure to find “the one” ideal. Just writing this out though has made me realise it’s just an excuse for continually buying more as though one day I’ll find the one perfect thing for all categories.
Such a great video! I see people buying new clothes each season to match the latest trends and I always catch myselft thinking "But that is going to be out of fashion after 2 months. It will go to waste". It just seems mindless consumerism... But at the same time, since I try to not shop so much, I get the feel that I turn a little bit into second-class person / lose the status. But your video was a reminder why wanting and buying less is important for me. Not everything in this earth is about me. And I would like to leave at least a little less waste.
I allow myself to add 6 or fewer key pieces of clothing (including shoes) each year, always with a discerning eye for quality and longevity and spending just a bit more on each item. I’ve been shopping this way for a few years now and have curated a wardrobe that is both functional and beautiful with pieces I’m actually excited to step out in. Cheers! Thank you for your terrific content. ❤
I have been working really hard for about three months to do clutter my house. I have spent countless hours giving stuff away on Buy Nothing, hauling boxes to the thrift store, selling stuff, organizing and re-organizing. Just a couple days of this hard work was all it took for me to be 100% clear that I never, ever want to have to do this again once I get my house where I want it. I immediately stopped wanting more, and stopped shopping except for consumables and necessities, a few Christmas and birthday gifts, etc. I have a very long “no buy list“ for 2022 and my general rule is that everything needs to be planned for and budgeted. I am also looking at quality over quantity with the hope that I am buying for the last time ever.
Thank you! I used to be someone who saves a lot but then covid hit and I spiraled down a hole of depression and instant gratification which manifested through online shopping. My savings over four years dwindled down to almost nothing. I have had depression for quite a while but I used to fill my time up with other things like volunteering. Covid took that away from me and shopping was the only alternative. I'm slowly trying to come out of it and this video helped me a lot. So thank you and hope you keep creating these types of videos.
So many good points which resonated with me, so hard that it hurts. 'Tis the season for shiny pencils, skirts, shoes, things... you give a much-needed reminder to why I already live in abundance and don't need more things. 💕
Wow-- I have never connected scarcity mindset to a lack of gratitude! We are alike in that way, as well as never saying no to myself. This is all awesome. I also love Ron Banks, and have watch his video on this topic, too. Thank you!
Great points in this video as usual, Christina! The truth for my overconsumption is boredom as well. Identifying the trigger was the key for me as well.
I will definitely be re-listening to your video Christina. It’s a great concept! I will also look into the resources you shared! Thank you ❤️ One quote I’ve been living by and have it posted on my calendar in my kitchen is : Don’t let things get in the way of where you want to go….Don’t remember where I read it but love this saying. 😊
I just adore your channel! I started to want less and that's also reflects my way of clothing. but then I realized that I dont like wearing the same colors all the time. sometimes I like pink, baby blue, olive, peachey colors ect. so now I don't restrict myself to "fit the perfect minimalist tamplate" when it comes to my wardrobe colors. I just do what feels right. mixing things I already own and thanking that I have them- that's what feeling aboundent really means to me. :) thank you for your content !!
I really appreciate seeing this kind of content, you are doing a great job Christina. I think so many of us feel overwhelmed in a life where instant gratification is the norm (at least those of us fortunate enough to have that privilege). But to be able to stop and ask why is so important to getting you the route of our problems and find a more fulfilling solution inside of ourselves. For example; doing something nice for someone else is infinitely more gratifying than buying a new thing for myself that I never really needed.
What a great video! As I contemplate buying this gold necklace I saw....I needed to hear this....and my ultimate goal is to get out of debt as well. This is so helpful. I agree wanting often comes right after I have consumed a lot (of media or things) or I have purchased something...the cycle continues and I want to buy more...it is truly an addiction.
The first minimalist I came across was Matt D’Avella, and then I started watching other random UA-camrs. But some time the beginning of 2020 I found Daniel Titchener and Ron Banks! I love them all. They’re so helpful and amazing
I don’t envy people who have everything, I envy people who are genuinely happy with little to nothing. That’s a superpower to me. I’m praying to God please help me overcome my inner demons. I hate that I shop outta boredom. It’s day 1 for me 😂😢 I know it’s just something I NEED to do. Your channel has helped me so much, new subbie here. Keep it up, very inspiring!
Thanks for mentioning Robert Banks again. I wasn't so hooked when I watched his videos before, but I've resolved to just dive in anyway. That together with your vids plus the book "Wanting" AND finally trying to get my YNAB straight... Should hopefully straighten me out for good. Thanks so much for your videos, Christina - so honest and on-your-feet intelligent.
We all were conditioned to believe that more means more prosperity, more means more happiness, more means success, no body explained what more we need in our life is not material things but more knowledge and knowing what you want and what you need to live life. Our parents worked hard to provide us with more and when their parents struggled financially and could not provide they would try their best to make sure their children are successful.
This resonates with me soooooo much! I have realized that I definitely have a shopping problem and am not sure why I actually shop. But it’s become a problem in my life. I’m currently in the process of getting out of a lot of debt abs should be debt free by Jan 2022. I’m scared to death I will end up back in debt since I haven’t changed my spending habits that much. I’m fact it’s gotten a little worse lately. Always feeling the need for more. Thank you for making these videos and being so honest. It’s truly helpful as I work on becoming less of a consumer. ❤️☺️✌🏻🙏🏻
we are all at different stages in life. depending on our goals, mindfulness regarding spending and aquisition are directly related to what we need. this is what we can try to focus on instead of getting side tracked and weighed down with material possessions. once you concentrate on using what you already have, then it's less important to collect more of the same and cause redundancies (and lack of space). think of yourself as a delicate ecosystem...
*Whenever I feel like giving up, I just think about why I started.* I don't know you personally but I wish you the best in your life. You are loved and needed. - a personal development UA-camr 🙃
You are a gem! Thank you so much for this video. I’m starting my minimalist journey and this really puts things into perspective for me. I’m going to start baking and gardening instead of shopping because it got to a point where there was no room for me in my studio due to all that I had. Blessings 🙏
Thank you Chris! It was very helpful! I am just on the beggining on my way, it all that you say is about me too. It's incredible how similar we are with that problem so I hoping to get there soon where you are now: to get rid of all credit debts (which I created because of shopping too many clothing), to want less and to spend my money more mindfully on things that serve me (hobby, car, travel etc). Thanks again! Greatings from Spain!
Hey chris!! I suffer from the same things. I have a susceptibility to addictive behavior. I have battled substance abuse in the past. I have those things under control but oniomania had a real hold on me. I have been watching your videos. They help alot. I have been getting really proactive. So thank you for all your info. Joe
Just found you on UA-cam. I started doing the capsule/minimalist wardrobe about two years ago. Many of your comments rang true with me. I was "told", I needed a "crisp white shirt", ok, so I bought one. How many times have I worn it? In two years, about three times! "Need to have light denim jeans", sorry but I don`t like light denim, plus it takes more energy to bleach/lighten them, so I did not follow that advice and the jeans that were dark two years ago are now light!! You said in one of your other videos that I have binge watched, that you had a thing about blazers. For me it was coats! With the changeable UK weather, you need coats. However two years ago I had ten, YES, ten. Just coats, not jackets or blazers, just coats! I now have three!! Keep up the great work. Yes, I have subscribed!!
Thank you for sharing your journey. I think I am going through something similar and hearing you describe the process of setting yourself free really helped me acknowledge my situation.
great video and i love the idea of going from mindless consumption to finding out what feeds you. we can perhaps be better fed by those things which are not in material form! would love to see you collab with ron one day.
I'm glad I found this video! I just realized I've been looking at something and nearly bought it because of one shirt I own. I have a whole bunch of similar shirts (my uniform is any nice black shirt), so rather than spend $20, I'm just going to donate it!
Hey Christina! Did you enjoy your break? 😇 Thank you for this video, it came at the perfect time! I’m almost at my savings goal for a replacement to my current car. After that, I am going to pay off my credit card. I notice, though, that as I am getting close to my goal for a new car, I feel the itch to spend money on something “fun” like shoes and clothes. Trying to allow myself little purchases here and there but I don’t want it to take me longer to get to my goal because I want to shop. I totally understand what you are saying about shopping feeling productive . I just turned 28 and my goal is to pick up some hobbies. I need things to fill my time so I don’t get bored and shop!
iam the same as you and now i live a very minimal life everything i buy has to have a a use in the home i dont buy decor anymore and most of my clothes are things i have had for years , i dont collect anything anymore either and iam more practical in my purchases :)
I have definitely found that wanting less is something that becomes easier with more and more practice. If I find myself being pulled towards an impulse purchase, I try to think about whether I want the hassle of looking after that item, maintaining it, finding it a home within my living space etc, and I think about all the other impulse purchase items that I have ended up decluttering in the past, and that seems to shift my mindset to "actually I don't really want to own this thing and all the other decisions/time commitments that come with it." Rewiring that default position you talked about is really hard, and all the forces around us (like advertising and social media!) are conspiring against exactly that- but it's like a muscle that just gets stronger with use, and when it does, it is so liberating! Love your channel btw💕
I started to appreciate less was more, when I realized that all I bought new didn't have an emotional impact on me. I was able to leave a bag for days unopened without caring at all.
I can really relate to a lot of things you have said and I want to stop the shopping addition I have I buy my fantasy self things I've never worn or had a place to wear it. I'm scared to even go into my closet even though I know I've got to stop. My goal is to pay off my visa and have clothes I will actually wear. So thank you for doing these videos xxx
Thought provoking - I would love to know how to deal with when you do get the urge to shop. I am striving to want less and generally succeed, then I get the urge to want something. Right now I want a new bag - I have lots already but in the last few months have found myself really wanting a new one. Yes I could get one and get rid of one but I am curious about this strong pull to buy.
This was such a great video. It really resonated with me - especially the part about shopping when you need a mindless distraction. Thank you for this video!
I never knew that "wanting less" was a thing. I guess for me, as I "less-ened" my life, going treasure hunting at stores for more stuff became less and less alluring and the reward for that has been a less complicated life and home.
Are use UA-cam to find discussions if I’m having an issue with getting over a thought that is a hurdle for me like I found you by trying to understand why am I struggling when I minimize my closet and I really don’t want to buy more because I used to be a shopaholic but I feel like I still keep having mixed matches so I am more purposeful with UA-cam Facebook is a waste for me what I found with UA-cam is that there are other people who think like me who have gone through things like me that I can learn from like when you talked about how you have to stop trying to buy to look like your fantasy self I thought I was the only one I thought like that so there’s comfort in finding like-minded people even if it’s Something that’s not healthy let you know you’re not the only one who struggles with certain things

Great points in this video as usual, Christina! The truth for my overconsumption is boredom as well. Identifying the trigger was the key for me as well.
I will definitely be re-listening to your video Christina. It’s a great concept! I will also look into the resources you shared! Thank you ❤️
One quote I’ve been living by and have it posted on my calendar in my kitchen is : Don’t let things get in the way of where you want to go….Don’t remember where I read it but love this saying.
As a recovering compulsive spender, yes! Yes! And yes!!
Love hearing your wisdom every week.☺️I’ve been trying to figure out how to want less and your insights really help. Taking notes📝
Love your videos!
Your content and your wonderful self really brightens up my day! Thanks again for a wonderful video! 💕
I am with you on social media consumption leading to a desire to aquire! I definitely had to identify that in order to keep on track with my goals.
Yes, Ronald Banks has been helpful also. Thank y and have a great day.
gurl u really need to start a podcast on that topic
Each video is better than the previous...
I love the Content and the set up.
Yay! Haha trying something new - happy sunday Myrna!
we are all at different stages in life. depending on our goals, mindfulness regarding spending and aquisition are directly related to what we need. this is what we can try to focus on instead of getting side tracked and weighed down with material possessions. once you concentrate on using what you already have, then it's less important to collect more of the same and cause redundancies (and lack of space). think of yourself as a delicate ecosystem...
Thank you for your videos, you are my favorite minimalism channel!
Such an AMAZINGLY accurate video!! LOVE U GIRL!!!!
More stuff made me just have to declutter. Having less stuff and quality stuff is so freeing. Great vid!
*Whenever I feel like giving up, I just think about why I started.*
I don't know you personally but I wish you the best in your life. You are loved and needed.
- a personal development UA-camr 🙃
This same thinking made me want to keep track with my minimalist life for the past 4 years…
This is very thoughtful. I realized I hav e a scarcity mindset too. Thanks for setting me on a low buy path!
Fantastic video ! Really agree with all you shared !
You are a gem! Thank you so much for this video. I’m starting my minimalist journey and this really puts things into perspective for me. I’m going to start baking and gardening instead of shopping because it got to a point where there was no room for me in my studio due to all that I had. Blessings 🙏
Yes!!
What a brilliant video! Your comments about gratitude and scarcity hit a deep chord. Back to the meditation cushion for me! In gassho, Christina 🙏🏻
Never lose your why and that's basically it for me, but if I forget it then I meditate.
There is so much inspiration - so many thought-provoking concepts - in this video. Thank you, Christina 🙏🏻
Hey chris!! I suffer from the same things. I have a susceptibility to addictive behavior. I have battled substance abuse in the past. I have those things under control but oniomania had a real hold on me. I have been watching your videos. They help alot. I have been getting really proactive. So thank you for all your info.
Joe
Great video. Thank you. Love Ron Banks too. 🙏🏻
He is THE best
Amo tu contenido, ojalá yo logre tener tu mindset algún día 🙂
This video truly spoke directly to me
And me too! I thought she was talking about me! 😁
So much to unpack here! Will be checking out Ron Banks' video and thinking on this for days/weeks to come...
Thank you for this video!! Needed to hear this! :)
🥰🥰
I'm glad I found this video! I just realized I've been looking at something and nearly bought it because of one shirt I own. I have a whole bunch of similar shirts (my uniform is any nice black shirt), so rather than spend $20, I'm just going to donate it!
I like the different set up!
Welcome back! I’ve missed your videos! This one is something I really need to work on
Hey Christina!
This was very useful! Thanks. Hoping for more videos on this subject!
Another amazing video ❤️
It’s like you went into my head and articulated all my thoughts! I do wish I could find a hobby that I enjoy as much as you enjoy creating UA-cam.
You will! It does take a bit of going on a self exploration journey. Give yourself time to play around and find what resonates ❤️
Great video Christina , thank you so much.
This is your best video!! Thank you! Indiana
I started to appreciate less was more, when I realized that all I bought new didn't have an emotional impact on me. I was able to leave a bag for days unopened without caring at all.
Thanks. This was very helpful!
Love the video, thank you! ♥
Looking at your old vlogs you look great with both short and long hair but I really like your short hair. Rock it!
Wow, what great insight. You video really spoke to me
Thank you so much for this video.
Very inspirational and something for me to work on!
Thank you for this video!
hello beautiful soul! you're keeping me on track to my minimalism journey and life improvement! thank you greetings from Italy CIAO! :-)
Such a motivational video! 😊
He got you too huh? The very reason I started 2 and a half years ago. SHOUT OUT TO RON B
He’s the best!
One learns over time that beyond basic needs being met consumerism doesn't change your life for the better. In fact, quite the contrary.
I absolutely love your videos. New subscriber!
Yay! Thank you!
I learnt to want less by just following you.....its that simple for me 😁✌ 🥰
Crushed it.
It’s like you mad this video just for me!
be intentional with purchases,
This video is priceless. ❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉
The less we need to be satisfied, the more affordable our happiness becomes.
More money is better than stuff
I never knew that "wanting less" was a thing. I guess for me, as I "less-ened" my life, going treasure hunting at stores for more stuff became less and less alluring and the reward for that has been a less complicated life and home.
I like your videos 😊
Thank you!
What do you do about stuff you get for birthday? You know the thing you probably didn't want or need.
