    She's so remarkable. The punk scene can be transphobic as hell and she has been spearheading a lot of good progress in the community.

    This whole transition she's gone through is the most punk rock thing ever. just shows how strong of a woman she is to go all out. Be confident and completely open about who you are. Even if you don't like the music, there's no way you can't respect that.

      I think it says a lot about punk rock in general. Do you think if she were in a "guns n roses" or a "Metallica" that the fans would openly support that? I'm sure some would, but I honestly think that there would've been some "hard ass" that would pull some "that fag ruined the band" and I can only imagine violence would follow. That's the beauty of punk rock! We are already the ones who don't fit in, so when one of us slides further down to fitting in less, we're all still here. I feel so blessed to have Punk rock. The most moving music, and it's timeless! I still listen to the same albums from 80's-90's, and I still love them as much as I always have. You'd never hear a song like "Hope" on the radio, it's old, and the recording isn't overproduced. We have a great community, and a built in sixth sense that there's something very wrong with everything around us, and we will change it!

      Agreed there. I know it's not the same thing but even metal has someone like Rob halford that you pretty much just can't deny, no matter how "hard" you are. And i'm sure that broke some boundaries but punk rock has always been way more progressive from the start.

      You're right. Luckily, she didn't choose to be female, she always was. There's literally scientific evidence supporting transgender people, that it is a mental thing. She's not choosing to be transgender.

      holy shit people we have it, the gate keeper of punk. Please oh great one tell me what opinions I can hold so that I can belong to the punk movement, I need you guidance because I'm a non-conformist who is incapable of thinking for myself. I'm going to put this out there for you so that you can understand Revolution/Loss, you don't get to tell anyone how to properly punk as that is that exact antithesis of punk. Now sadly I can't tell you to GTFO as punk doesn't work that way, I can however highlight you as an authoritarian dick hole.

      The new name wasn’t shocking at all. She straight up says in a song on either New Wave or White Crosses (can’t remember which right now) that she would have been named Laura, and it was kinda clear from that song that she was trans, even though she was years from coming out.

      I already knew, but I was still taken quite aback with how blunt, yet calm, she was about it.
      The more interviews of her I watch, the more I love who she is. A lot of what she preaches reminds me of my first mentor who doesn't really resonate with me so much. Somehow the things she says really speak to me in a way my first mentor doesn't anymore.

    Is his show always like this? This is one of the best interviews I've ever seen both with a musical artist and especially with a trans* person. George shows her so much respect and conveys such passion. Very very well done.
    Laura is such a beautiful soul. I know she's just living her life, trying to find her own happiness without ever having grandiose fantasies about being a role model, but, nevertheless, she is. Just by existing and living her life authentically and adding her face to the diverse tapestry of humanity, she is. Trans* people are so important. Their existence has a vital impact on society. They are reminders of how the world can be--more complex, more diverse, more inspiring of awe and wonder, just... more than what it currently is.
    I almost cried seeing the expression on Laura's face when she said she counted herself among the statistics of trans* people who have attempted suicide. And it's so true what she said about her daughter and how having children forces you to contemplate your own mortality and make more of your time. They grow so fast, and you feel like it's all passing you by and you don't want to miss anything. AM!'s song "Two Coffins" is a beautiful song that conveys the magnitude of those feelings within seemingly everyday, mundane moments, like just taking your daughter's hand as she smiles at you. It's a bit haunting. I can't stop listening to it.

You are the ones that are disgusting, not normal and mentaly ill. I hope the next time you face personal adversity people are there to hold you up and help you though your rough times. Hopefully that will make you all more appreciative of other peoples hardships. Most likely NOT though, since it sounds like all of the negativity comes from christian republicans who can't think for themselves and who try forcing their bullshit dogma on people that don't believe in the same things. It's obviously impossible for you to not let your religion influence your rational thought, so please....just stop talking out loud or commenting negitively on posts/stories that are about good people.

    The phrase, "but she/he was born a born a man..." pushes me over the edge. Really? I would like to meet the woman that gave birth to a full grown man.
    Gender Identity issues are uncommon, but they are real and people are born with it. Being Trans isn't a lifestyle choice, and if any of you pay attention you would note that most transgender people would rather kill themselves than to face the humiliation from our bigoted society. Transgender people that transition make a choice to not live in the closet and in misery. We are very strong willed and loving people, who just want to be loved like everyone else. I have a great respect for Laura Jane Grace to be public with her identity, she is a great example for our trans community and our society.

    Against Me! has always been one of my favorite bands and Laura is a big part f what made me comfortable enough to come out. I was always ashamed of the fact I felt like a boy when I was supposed to be a girl according to my family and society. But Laura has given me strength and courage and I just love her, so many transgender people are so mainstream pop and I couldn't relate to anyone but having someone who I listen to, who makes the kind of music I love and dream about one day making, it just really helped. So thanks to her I am now happily living as a boy and am even in a band that understands me and we tell the kids who come see us (even tho we ourselves are just kids) "Be whatever you want! Be whoever you are! Be you and don't be afraid of what people will say or think! Their opinions are second to your happiness!" and it isn't just for being trans* or gay or whatever, but if a parent is pressuring their kid into being a lawyer but the kid wants to be a rockstar, be a rockstar and make yourself happy first!

      No. Do you know what transgender is? It's sort of when your mind doesn't match your body. Like one could have a male brain but female genetalia. Or a female mind and male genetalia. I have a male mind but was born with female genetalia. I am transgender and so is Laura Jane Grace.

    Laura Jane Grace is an articulate spokesperson for this cause and probably anyone she feel's compassionate about. It is interesting reading some of the comments. Like usual UA-cam comments many are peppered with ignorance and just down right stupidity. The crux of the matter is this. When I choose someone as a friend I care that they are a good person or if I choose someone as an artist I care that they are good at what they do. I can give a flying fuck about whether the person is gay or straight or transgender or black or white or skinny or fat or whatever. If they are caring, moral people with a passion for life that is all I care about. The fucking haters in the world usually hate because they have nothing all that great going on in their lives or great people in their lives. Usually haters find each other because who else would hang around them. They are sad and pathetic.

      Bianca p I know what you mean exactly.They resort to being like that because they are not too bright. People that have things going on, striving to succeed in careers that are meaningful and such usually don't have time to hate. They are too busy busing their ass pursuing their dreams like Laura Jane Grace has.

It`s against nature and god booo) You Need to find Jesus ) Or ,I hope not too many of them studiying or working in the medical field like me . just love to mention genitals and the word vagina , penis ,

      ***** I applaud you for taking the brave step to be true to yourself in the eyes of the world. Where you parents cool about it? I hope so. It takes people coming out to change things because people who know and love you are much easier to have their minds and hearts opened up. They in turn will help open other people's hearts open and so on and so on. When it comes to social change the 5 degrees of separation thing is really powerful. My neighbor (at another house I was living in at the time) was a horribly racist prick until his son married a Filipino girl. It took them having their first baby for that guy to turn himself around. That baby melted away a lot of hate and he slowly came around and is truly a much better person. Best of luck to you.

    I love Laura so much. She has been SUCH an inspiration in my life. I have been struggling with myself since I was about 8 years old. I had been a feminine child all my life. And when I hit 15 years old, I finally discovered... "Hey you know what? I am not comfortable in my own skin with who I am. I am not a boy. I am now 25 years old and transitioning. And it took Laura's music AND her appearance on True Trans to help me come to terms with that.
    It has been a hell of a road. But seeing posts from her on FB regarding the tornado of garbage going on within the transgendered community, she gives me hope.
    Laura has been my idol since July of 2015

    I have to be honest. Seeing someone who I was so used to being a guy, as a girl is a little strange. I've liked Against Me for years so when i heard about the Rolling Stone article I was extremely surprised like most ppl i would guess. With that being said I'm glad she is happy. When it all comes down to it we all have to find our own happiness and acceptance in this life, so congrats to her.

    • @treehuggur
      @treehuggur 10 років тому +12

      She didn't "used to be a guy" though? She was just in the closet. She was always a woman, regardless of how she presented in the past. That's kind of like saying that I, a gay person, "used to be straight" because I pretended to like men in the past.

    • @marque1313
      @marque1313 10 років тому +13

      Ari How should I start this. OK. Tom Gabel was born physically as a man. He presented himself as a man for many years. People saw him as a man and had no idea what was going on inside of him. When someone you have identified for many years as being a man goes through this sort of transformation it is shocking. Even Laura admits this. My comment was to this point and more about her finally finding happiness. Sexual preference is not gender and vice versa.

    • @treehuggur
      @treehuggur 10 років тому +2

      I don't think you realize how ignorant and hurtful you're being towards trans women. I appreciate you trying to explain how transness works, but your explanation itself proved to me that I didn't get my point across. I realize your intentions were good, but please do not call her a him, or say she "used to be a man." Her birth assignment or how she previously identified does not give you a right to misgender her. Yes, it is surprising when someone you've known for a while comes out. There's nothing wrong with that. I'm glad you are happy for her, but disappointed with how you worded your surprise.

    • @lsgshelton
      @lsgshelton 10 років тому +9

      Ari
      Ari, your point is well taken that often folks, well meaning as they are, misgender trans women and say they were a man and now they're a woman, which is not accurate, especially if the person always identified their gender differently than the sex assigned at birth. However, with all due respect Ari, I believe marque1313 was being very careful with their wording and relatively respectful in their initial post. They said "Seeing someone who I (emphasis on *I*) was so used to being a guy" and didn't actually say "he used to be a guy." In other words, they were speaking of their own perception of gender expression, not the person's actual gender. Also, marque13131 said "presented himself as a man" which is mostly an accurate statement; the only slip-up was that marque1313 didn't say "presented herself as a man." I don't think it's fair to expect everyone to be perfect with pronouns especially when they are speaking about someone in the past, pre-transition. They're not trained journalists (granted those folks are notorious for getting pronouns wrong). To their credit, marque1313 never identified her as male, only said people saw her as male.

    • @marque1313
      @marque1313 10 років тому +6

      Ari If you felt my words were ignorant and hurtful (?) let me go out on a limb and say that imo you are being overly sensitive. Nonetheless i apologize. My intent was not to hurt anyone's feelings. Also, I was never trying to 'explain how transness works'. I would not have the first clue on how to explain something like that tbh.
      I was giving my opinion in what i thought was an honest, but not judgmental fashion, which i stand by. You are looking strictly at the inside of someones head when you are stating that ppl are male or female. The greater part of the population of this planet views someone who is male as one who possesses a penis. Those who are female possess vagina's and have the natural ability to reproduce. Sorry if you feel differently but you are def in the minority when it comes to your views on the subject.
      I was merely pointing out in my original post that Tom Gabel was a man. Laura Jane Grace is a woman. Not by birth, but nonetheless, now a woman and I will respect that choice and wish her happiness. If body parts we are born with do not dictate gender as you state then why would someone going through reassignment surgery change their name? Its just a name right? Why cant a girl be named Tom Gabel? Why the need to change her name to a woman's name? Matter of fact, why the need to have surgery at all if our gender is all in our heads?
      I really do not understand how you took my comments and twisted them into being something hurtful. In any case, again, i apologize. However I stand by my initial post.
