Laura Jane Grace & the Mississippi Medicals: Tiny Desk Concert

The set list kept changing, right up until showtime. Laura Jane Grace had to cram more than two decades of music - both solo material and from her influential punk band Against Me! - into 15 minutes. Her band was used to this gleeful chaos. Grace's wife, Paris Campbell Grace, Drive-By Truckers' Matt Patton and The Ergs' Mikey Erg make up the Mississippi Medicals, a loving and stabilizing force for a catalog of songs about American injustice, creative frustration, identity and broken promises… but also hope through collective action and personal revelation. In this Tiny Desk, you'll see them play newer songs ("I'm Not a Cop" and "All F***** Out"), but also throwbacks to “Pints of Guinness Make You Strong” (a personal request) and an absolutely powerful version of "Black Me Out."
An Against Me! show changed my life. Before Grace's set, I shared a story about a sweet, sheltered suburban kid who spent his freshman year at shows instead of studying for class. (I lost my college scholarship, but, hey it worked out for me in the end.) Reinventing Axl Rose had just come out, but everyone knew every single word. In the small living room, the mass of bodies moved like high tide, pushing and pulling as we gleefully sang, “ ‘Cause, baby, I’m an anarchist / And you’re a spineless liberal." We knew that the world can be rotten and cruel, yet could be beautiful, too, in how we fight for freedom together. At one point, the swell spilled over and I fell out the back door, then was quickly pulled back up because that’s what we do when someone falls.
Walking back to my dorm room afterward, beaming and bruised, I had a realization: Punk is complex and contradictory; it will fail and frustrate you… but it will also set you free. That paradox still haunts and challenges me, but I wear these songs - and all that have come after - like armor.

This girl's a legend for everything she have done to the punk rock scene.
LAURA JANE GRACE ON TINY DESK IS A DREAM COME TRUE
Right?!?
@@CassieMakesArt Definitely
Yes 🙌
….more like a nightmare… in any case, Jill Stein 2024
Doesn't get better ❤
Laura Jane Grace’s songwriting has spoken straight to my soul since the early 00’s. One of the icons of our time!!
Yes!!!!! Friends of friends with against me in Gainesville the early 00s too; loving TF outta this
Same
I told her that once in person and she's was like "ya ya lol " 🤣 like gave me the time even tho I was in a bad place and definitely strung out. I will forever lose sleep about that interaction 😭 but it was probably perfect. I'm clean and transitioning now😅.
@@michaelsanzone7217 love this so much. I think she would appreciate this a lot, too..
Congrats! Youre trans😂😂

Met her at The Fest in Gainesville in 2023. She was just hanging out watching Strike Anywhere. Was hesitant to go up to her and say hello, but glad I did. She couldn't have been nicer. Was happy to take a pic and talk with me and others who wanted to meet her. She's great.
I was like no way. That is the singer from against me. So great to see her.
old punk git who had never heard of laura jane grace listened to this with a huge smile on his face. as you say on the other side of the pond . Awesome. loved it.
The bass player is having the time of his life
Shroomin hard
I’d love to take life that way from now on.
Bobby Matt Patton!! He’s the bass player for Drive By Truckers. He’s always smiling!
They all were on that last song… that confirms its as good as I thought.
He’s the man. I got a pic with him and got a guitar pick from him he was using a New Wave pick. I couldn’t believe it. I also have a Laura Jane pick. So a Matt Patton and Laura Jane pick and a set list in Knoxville in March. Been scoring this year.
Thank you, Tiny Desk. I have not heard of Against Me before and now looking thru youtube to learn more about punk music
As the Eternal Cowboy is my favorite record of theirs (though they have a lot of good ones). It's a good in-between from their more raw, chaotic early sound to the more produced sound of later records.
It's never too late to be a teenage anarchist
I've seen Against Me! 13 times, favorite band ever - got a big ol BLACK ME OUT tattoo on my shoulder.
Definitely second As The Eternal Cowboy as their best work.
This is one of the reasons I love Tiny Desk. It's easy to be confronted by an act like this and go "what the heck is this" but if you give them a chance, almost everything on Tiny Desk grows on you and has an interesting story behind it. I've got into so many acts who'd usually be way off my radar from here, a bit like with John Peel back in the day.
OMG UR MISSING OUT
Chills when Pints of Guinness started. Against Me! used to play shows in my basement
Black Me Out was the 1st Laura Jane Grace song I ever heard. I heard it right after my egg cracked. Love her!!!!!!!!
So you're a poser is what I'm reading
@NinjaTylerBlack It is often the finger that points and calls poser who is, in fact, the poser.
@@NinjaTylerBlack Why can't someone discover new music and take a liking to it, without being a called a poser? Ya jag.
@@NinjaTylerBlackor young? I was 7 when Eternal Cowboy came out but I guarantee I’ve seen more LJG shows
It’s an Against Me! song homie.
This is a gift!! Thank you for having Laura Jane Grace & the Mississippi Medicals.
I miss being a teenager, riding around with my friends screaming the lyrics of Baby I'm an Anarchist at the top of our lungs.
I am an RnB and HipHop fan but Tiny Desk has gained my trust so I checked this band out. Thank you Tiny Desk; I have now found something different to listen to from time to time.
checkout Miley's Backyard sessions with Laure Jane Grace. such a vibe
Respect. Long time fan.
Like I've been through the changes. The Rolling Stones article.
The acoustic jams.
The punk.
Never losing touch.
Keeping it real.
Hope to catch you in Houston!
It's happened so many times that I start listening to a band and part way through I stare at the drummer and say to myself, "is that Mikey Erg!?"
dude 😭
It's always Mikey Erg and I love it.
@@VisibleNinja5674 I thought the same thing
And it always is, because he's the drummer of every band.
Lol. And it always is!!
I came for Laura, of course, but got hypnotized by the bassist's incredible sound and contagious joy. Much love to the Mississippi Medicals!
Yay, Tiny Desk! I saw Against Me! back in the early 2000’s, and it remains one of the best shows I’ve ever seen. Laura Jane’s voice is infectious, and this makes me long to be there shouting alongside her!
Hole in My Head is my favorite album this year; I can’t stop listening to it! Punk poetry 🖤
Its so goooooood
Perfect start to finish!
Laura Jane Grace lead singer of Against Me! An amazing songwriter and super sweet person. This is awesome to see her on NPR tiny desk concert
I've been on the ride with Laura since I first heard the demo tape back in '99. And I'm staying on the ride. \m/ \m/
Cant believe it took so long for laura to get a tiny desk concert, glad to see it now
Laura has one of the most powerful voices ever and I love her so much
Right and she doesn’t need backing vocals
Because she's a man!!!!
@@iangoodisDMX He really does need them, especially live. You can see in Against Me! Concerts, James carried with all.
He is okay with this performances with less than five songs.
One of the most recognizable voices out there. And one of the best songwriters of her generation.
Recognizable in the way that a cat screeching at night is recognizable, yes.
@SpookyApparition Are you talking about Laura Jane Grace? If so, I guess you're entitled to your own opinion. Even if it's wrong. Some people are just born tonedeaf and clueless. Not really your fault.
@@johnny5fingers0966 "Some people are just born tonedeaf" like that backup singer, lol
@SpookyApparition I agree with you on the backup singer. That was brutal. I noticed the mic volume gradually lowering through the performance.
@@johnny5fingers0966 She's Laura's wife, too. 😬
If I was playing bass with Laura, I'd have the exact same look of elation on my face the entire time!
haha they are so happy
that expression is the same live! when i saw them in May he looked just as excited as most of the crowd lol, I love it
Loved her music since Sink Florida Sink. I'm so stoked to hear new music from her & see her getting more exposure
I saw Against Me! performing Reinventing Axel Rose in its entirety in downtown Gainesville at Bo Diddly plaza. Its one of the best shows I've ever seen. And ive seen some really good acts. Pints of Guinness makes me cry every time i hear it.
I skipped a college final in 2003ish to attend an against me concert. Forever love Laura and she has the best name 😜
❤❤❤❤❤
the description of this video actually makes me tear up over the fact that i never had a cool punk youth. i was just phasing out playing video games in my room. i’ve wasted these years instead of being out there and finding myself. against me and laura however really give me the feeling i am part of this regardless of my absence. i could have figured myself out so much earlier and could have suffered a lot less. but here i stand, in spite of it all. stay safe, siblings
Black me Out gave me goosebumps. I love Laura's Energy.
I've seen it performed two times now, and heard it countless times and it just gives me all the amazing feels!
Wow, first time hearing of this group, but absolutely love Laura Jane Grace’s voice!
No one speaks for me but Patti Smith and Laura Jane Grace
Andrew, you sound like my high school friend Fee. You’d like her.
Against Me changed my life too. Thanks for this
Against me cracked egg 😊
This set is bad. They fell off.
@@EvanDJ-wq4og its almost as if live music is different from studio produced
@@EvanDJ-wq4og you're so wrong lol
@@EvanDJ-wq4og 1. no 2. that isn't even Against Me
It’s about time we got Laura Jane Grace on Tiny Desk. We need like two more of these to cover all her hits!
Maybe even five more!
Funny thing is ive just discovered against me this year and i think is one of the best bands ever. Im obssesed. Laura is amazing. I love her so much
Just hearing Laura Jana Grace she's awesome, not my usual thing but she just caught me, good music is good music!
this is the first time im hearing this band play, and i love their sound!
Listen to Against Me!
check out the backyard sessions with Miley Cyrus that LJG did... its some amazing stuff! and obviously Against Me! is always a must listen
Seeing her in concert changed my life for the better ❤
Laura sounding great, geez... love seeing "Pints of Guinness..." on the setlist.
!!!! Yess!!
Laura Jane is one of the best song writers of our time. Absolutely shredding on the guitar, too! 🔥🔥
Good morning 🌞. Thanks for the tunes!
Always happy to see Laura show up somewhere 🏴
Shoutout to the camera operator for knowing the songs and EXACTLY when to zoom in or rack focus a bit to really emphasize a point.
Maybe the most passionate musician you will ever see.
My heart is So full watching this
I needed this visceral morning cup of roar.
I love love love the mix of artists lately but I was not expecting Laura Jane Grace!!! What a treat!!
wow… can not believe they got her on here. what a time to be alive
easily the most iconic punk voice of our time
Seeing this pop up in my recommended was the best thing that happened to me this week
Lovin Against Me ever since Reinventing Axl Rose. Great to see Laura playing such a powerful set
I have also been waiting for a great moment like this, thank you for every lyric screamed from ur throat, your music changed my life!
Well-deserved! Laura is a legend, and one of my favorite musicians of all time.
I’ve been waiting for this since Laura teased it on her IG! So incredible
Thank you Tiny Desk for hosting this performance. Against Me!’s Transgender Dysphoria Blues changed my entire life and this performance of Black Me Out is so so so right. ❤
What in the actual fk?? "Against Me" was so fckn good!! I don't even no where to start.. Actually never mind.. Nothing but respect for, Laura Jane Grace and what shes meant to the Punk community.. 🤘
I SAW THIS AND IMMEDIATELY WENT "*GASP* LAURA JANE GRACE???!! OH MY GOD!!" I've been a fan of hers for ages, this is so cool to see ♡
Just when you think NPR couldn't surprise me anymore. This band was a big part of my life and in a place without guidance, they taught me a lot about the world. without a friend like the music of Against me! things would of gone very differently for me. Thank you Laura, your words helped so many street kids from broken homes.
Also Mikey Erg from the Ergs on drums! incredible!
I was just thinking about her recently! So nice to see
WOW! I’ve been following Against Me! and LJG for years. This was awesome. Thank you
😭😭😭❤️❤️ I’m in tears. So much love for Laura Jane Grace
We love Laura Jane Grace in this house.
Legit crying rn 🥲 can’t wait to see Laura live in November 😭
I wish I was as happy as Matt lol, you guys did an awesome job!!
This is great! I am a huge Laura Jane Grace and Against Me! fan -- seen her many times live -- so naturally I love this. But I wanted to mention that whoever wrote the above essay (Lars Gotrich?) really summed up LJG and punk in general beautifully!
hundreds of hours of video and thousands of lines of text are spent asking "what makes people click on a youtube thumbnail?" and the answer is very simple: Laura Jane Grace
This made me so happy I cried lol screaming along to her music kept me alive as a teen
I’ve never heard of this band, but wow, I’m so glad I clicked on this video
this is fantastic, thank you!
I was so happy to see this, I love Laura and hopefully getting tickets to see her in the UK 🥰
Man Matt Patton with Laura Jane. Great combo. Love this
Ohhhhhh I'm so happy they played Black Me Out!! I'm on cloud nine after watching this 🥰
What a legend!!!
Blues are alive and well, thank you very much!
Waited out to watch this till now seen Laura live on my bday(kitchener show)as a trans woman, im so thankful for being a fan since early 2000s. She's showed being authentic is the only way to be.
Love Against Me! And love Laura Jane. Thanks NPR!
Her new album is awesome. This is awesome.
Thank you Tiny Desk for continuing to introduce all of us to new, unusual and different types of music...
What’s unusual about it lol
The 3rd song is like 25 years old too
BORNE ON FM WAVES OF THE HEART...LISTEN TO IT!!!!
My favorite song from NEW WAVE!
Definitely one of my single favorite songs of all time, never gets old (though perhaps I do).
All time great
I still remember hearing Against Me! for the first time on a CD comp called ‘Against police injustice’. Never heard anything like them. 20 years later they’re still one of my favorite bands. Love these other projects too.
Sitting quietly nodding my head in my car and then screaming at the top of my lungs for pints of guinnes 😊
One of the best! My soul is soooo happy right now!!
Yess I love Laura so much!! This was so amazing to watch
They played Pints of Guiness and Black Me Out!
Laura Jane Grace you saved my life
First I’ve heard of Laura or Against me and dang she goes hard. Super energy.
Amazing to see them live! Smiles and energy all night!
Hit after hit after hit shes just too good!! I esp love the live version of im not a cop
Laura Jane Grace is an absolute legend 🔥
On repeat forever!! ❤
OMG FINALLY I’VE BEEN WAITING SO LONG FOR THIS 😭😭😭
LITERALLY TYPING IN TINY DESK EVERY OTHER DAY SINCE SHE ANNOUNCED IT
@archangelang4772 SAME OMGGGGG 😭😭😭
Great episode!!!!! Against Me! Rules. This was great
I would sell my hands to hear her play Two Coffins live
so she played an intimate acoustic show in my small Greek town in January (honestly so unexpected), there weren't many people and it gave small band concert vibes.. I couldn't believe how people didn't know them but also couldn't believe my luck.. I paid only 15 euros and I got the 1st ticket, I was all the way to the front and I was sobbing like crazy and also having the time of my life after listening to her for years.. and yes she played Two coffins.. I will always cherish this live
I saw them in 2017 when Against Me! opened for Green Day. I wished they’d played Two Coffins, but I wasn’t quite that lucky. Still an awesome show. 🖤
Wow, Black Me Out knocked me out, what a song
I'm in the BTS ARMY and I thought "I think about them way too much so let me watch this Tiny Desk because FOR SURE it won't remind me of them at all...." 😂
I enjoyed your writing exercise song and frankly the whole set 👍👍
everyone killed it but man that back up singer just added just an excellent element
That description is everything.
LAURA JANE GRACE ON TINY DESK 🗣🗣🗣
