  • A Florida mother was arrested after investigators say her children were found to be suffering signs of neglect. The Marion County Sheriff’s Office says deputies responded to a call from a Dollar Tree employee saying a man was in the store yelling irrational things and had two children with him who were screaming. According to the arrest affidavit, when deputies arrived they say the man made statements about self-harm. Inside Edition Digital’s Mara Montalbano has more.

Mental illness is a serious problem. My mom is schizoaffective, meaning bipolar and schizophrenic. It's a horrible illness. I'm thankful she was able to care for me when she was stable while I was growing up. But before I graduated high school, she had her first really bad mental break, and set our apartment on fire due to hallucinations. She spent time in prison and then immediately was transferred to a mental hospital. I had to live with my grandma after that, who I was already living with on and off. Now my mom's mental health has deteriorated so bad, she can't take care of herself at all. So it's a problem that the mother likely knew the severity of her husband's mental health, yet still left their kids in his care. He needs help, and if he can't help himself, then he certainly isn't fit to take care of his children.

The thing is most police won't take a person that suffering from mental illness unless they state they're going to harm themselves my mom suffers from schizophrenia currently right now she been having those mental attacks to where she going around constantly throwing things at peoples whether it be outside or inside neighbours have called the cops on her many times cops refuse to take her saying they can't force her to a mental hosptial. It not as easy to get help for someone having mental illness I'm sure this mother has called for help many times only to be denied that help for there children dad.

Ok so mom who probably does everything she possibly can and can’t afford thousands for daycare is going to jail because her husband is crazy??
    That’ll help the kids..
How about the husband gets ACTUAL in patient care instead of putting the weight of the world solely on the mother’s shoulders?
This is why people don’t have kids anymore. It takes 3 full time incomes to barley get by, even then you can’t afford child care… and you go to prison when the father of the kids had a mental break instead of someone actually doing something to actually help.
The state should pay for a few weeks of in patient care AND childcare instead of blaming this woman.
OR BETTER YET… if the government isn’t going to protect us from an economy where nobody can afford to either stay home with the kids, OR get decent child care.. we should stop having babies.
Why feed the government more tax payers when they keep closing down services they used to have?
What’s the point of even having g kids when you work 12 hours a day and don’t even see them and still have nothing to show for it.

If he isnt stable enough to be around kids then bi-polar should indicate people need their kids taken away. Frankly this is insane. Her mental health is ignored, she is not some psychiatrist. I had a friend for 15 years with bipolar who ended up stealing from me and becoming a pathological liar, thats after I was his only friend for 15 YEARS. I have autism, am I at fault for having trusted him?? Because the reality is I was completely deceived. How tf is mental illness causing neglect thus the fault of another person who has no actual ability to diagnose or involuntarily commit another person as she is not a healthcare professional and likely has stuff going on thats her own issues. We blaime and let homeless people with mental issues ROT in this country, this is unjust. Both parents should be charged if anything. But if the kids were in his care then obviously, he neglected them. Thats INSANE to think otherwise. Something I notice with bipolar people is they use their emotional responses and outbursts as an excuse to do terrible things or they try as hard as they can to shift blame always.

Hmm. That's a tough one. My mother has mental illness and my dad was the let's get it done and get it over with so we can get back to our lives. I don't recall my parents being very affectionate but my mother and father did show me love especially my mother.
It's obvious she wasn't getting what she needed and eventually my father barred her from coming back (a brainchild move I affectionately called booting her out of the house) she's been in and out of the VA and now is on full disability.
The consensus now that I'm an adult seems to be I need to see a therapist and get over it, rather than have any kind of emotional support.
I guess my mother exhausted whatever embathy or sympathy my family had and now that her daughter follow some of that well I don't have kids so I can't say for sure.

Was she ordered to drop them off and risked losing custody entirely if she didn't? Did a judge order this custody arrangement with all the relevant medical/psych information? Has the judge ordered a psych eval before that decision, or did they assume the mom is lying to gain custody and child support?
Was he stable when she dropped them off and became unstable since? Did she KNOW he wasn't on his meds? Was she allowed to communicate and check in with the kids while they were with him? Could she have gotten them back amd refused to pick them up, thereby essentially leaving them with him WITH all the facts?
I prefer not to judge (if I even had a right to!) until I have more information, but you seem so sure of yourself behind a keyboard and anonymity that you just popped off and declared them shameful! Judgemental much?
