- Jenna Sinatra shares her exciting life on social media. However, in a video she posted, Sinatra is heading to the emergency room. After she yawned, the New Jersey woman says she suddenly found herself with her jaw locked in place. The local emergency room gave her muscle relaxers to relax her jaw. She then says four people helped shove her jaw back together. Inside Edition’s Alison Hall has more.

If it happens to you don't panic. First relax, tilt your head back as far as you can, and gently try to shift it back in. Tilting your head back is the essential key.

I am so glad she's better and I hope for her sake it never happens again, I can imagine the fear she must have had! But I can only imagine it, as I've never experienced a jaw that couldn't dislocate. I was fifteen when I found out not everyone can dislocate their jaw at will, with no pain! I thought everyone could do it, I've been able to do it for as long as I remember and I'm 41 now. First time I demonstrated it to my doctor at that age he nearly had a heart attack lol, I thought it was normal so I never said anything to him before. He kept asking me if it hurt and didn't believe me when I said no, his fingers were pressed against the hinge as I kept popping it in and out of place and just had this disbelieving look on his face. He called in a couple of the other doctors in the practice and they were just as shocked, but my mother just repeated that I have always been able to do it lol.

@@xOrionNebula2708 Ooh, I hadn't thought of that connection, that could be! I', not exactly double jointed in my fingers but I can bend them in odd ways! Like my thumbs can bend at right angles and my fingers I can keep straight but bend the tips of them. It freaks people out too, I have a friend that calls them witch fingers lol.

This happened to me once in college classes after some dental work. It was a good 15 to 20 minutes of my mouth being stuck open. So embarrassing, but I am 52 and it has never happened again.

Ive had this happen before briefly. Not nearly as bad as hers. Thankfully mine corrected itself within a few seconds but its pretty terrifying when it happened.

This happens to me often. It doesn't really hurt, it just feels locked in place for a moment. And unfortunately, sometimes you just can't close your mouth for a bit.

She right this happened to me at 15 in school in P.E class for at less 3 to 5 mins. I managed to stay clam and relax the muscle to go back to place but was kinda scary for a minute
I have lock jaw from chewing gum frequently and getting punched in the face multiple times. It does lock when I yawn but I can put it back in place which is sometimes painful.

It’s called lock jaw and it hurts like hell
I have severe TMJ and I have problems with my jaw locking open after I yawn also but it also gets locked closed at times. I’ve wore bite guards and taken medication which didn’t help to much, my jaw clicks in and out of place all the time but after years of this I’ve gotten used to it and it’s not quite as bad as it was in the beginning, thank goodness!
My jaw used to click like this as well and after probably 15 yrs or so it stopped clicking 🤷. Anytime it "clicked" people around me could hear it as it was kinda loud.
My daughter has TMJ too. This happens to her periodically.

I had this happen while I was being treated in a hospital for hypoglycemia (unrelated). All of a sudden my jaw was locked open but all contorted and it was painful as HeLl. I looked like a freaking monster and it lasted for 5 hours. My whole head was convulsing. Still to this day 5 months later I have no idea why it happened and pray it never happens again!

Happened to me. Had to go to ER, my only luck its just near by so it tok just several minutes. ER surgeon put it back in place and mentioned same isue if the jaw is in this position to long. The dislocation can happen during vomiting too ,suporting the jaw so it dosnt move to far helps.

This happened while I was in school. I was terrified and it hurt so much. Everybody was worried and I got sent to the nurse. She just put some ice on it and it relaxed my jaw enough for it to go back into place.
I've had this happen twice to me, and they were both within one week of each other. Terribly painful. Jaw really feels locked and is much more painful when trying to force it to move. Luckily it lasted only for a few minutes both times, though pain and discomfort persisted for a few hours after the jaw was no longer locked. Any time I yawn now I am very, very mindful to keep my jaw from opening too much, and often times I just yawn with my mouth closed.
same, this is why I kinda hate going to the dentist. I even told him about it and ask for advice and he just told me to yawn with my mouth shut 😅

I wonder if maybe it's dehydration? I know when working outside doing construction, if I'm not drinking enough, I've had my hands literally lock up. Like I just played guitar for hours then went rock climbing or something. Or gripped a shovel all day. Just put them in ice and chug gatorade, then put in front of truck heater hahah. Only happened couple times. I drink tons of water and tea and gatorade while working now.
I was at the dentists office one day and a patient came in with this condition. He saw her first and she was in there like 10 minutes and she was back to normal. The dentist said it was no big deal and easy to fix

They can also cause more damage just shoving it upward. This happended to someone i know and one dentist was able to fix it in a matter of a few minutes

I told my doctor about this happening to me years ago. He told me that it's called TMJ or something like that. He said it wasn't lock jaw, but that was the best way I could describe it. For me sometimes it almost feels like my lower jaw is going to dislocate or just keep pulling down after I yawn. I have to to pull it up with the muscles in my face and it hurts pretty badly.

I'm opening my mouth now and feeling my jaw but I don't want to do it really! It could happen to anybody, including you, right now....the panic of not being able to even shout or gasp in the massive anxiety and stressed out state is terrible.
I was yawning a lot at work not too long ago one day and one of the yawns I had I could feel my jaw's range of motion reach its limit that the thought of dislocating it crossed my mind. I didn't think this could happen but good to know.

It’s because this joint called the temperomandibular joint of the jaw can no longer glide when opening your mouth and is displaced from its disk. You have to treat this as a dental emergency and avoid closing your mouth at any cost because it can damage it even more (can put a mouth guard right away) and bring it to the dentist or emergency care asap.
When you yawn do always cover your mouth with your hand it kinda makes a signal not to open your mouth too wide and if you do still end up in that situation try to calm down don't panic (the first time I kinda did) try to find sorta path where your jaw kinda slid like pushing it back - another incident just some week ago it happened to me so what I did like yawn again how exactly got me into that situation miraculously my jaw slid back up to its place tho it was still kinda painful and the pain like retained for like week or so on the tip of my jaw.

Mercury amalgam fillings can do this. I had this in a milder form a week after getting one where I couldn't close my jaw all the way. I thought it was an ear infection. When I found out what they had put in my mouth, I got my fillings replaced.
