I got my E-bike last month (got a second better bike this past July) and am currently selling my car (sold it back in April). BEST decision I've made in a long time! No insurance, no gasoline, lower maintenance/repairs (edited this part for the pedantic person in the comments), no titles and plates, just a reliable bike that can get me to and fro while able to go speeds of nearly 32mph.
Edit: I also do delivery work on my bike for a living and have no issues with the adjustment. Just had to get some cargo crates and a cargo trailer (the latter for bigger grocery orders or orders that have bulky items).

Are y’all worried abt your bike getting stolen?
@@PeezyC of course, similar to how drivers worry about getting their cars stolen. That's why alarms and locks exist 😂
Dude you're so so dead-on!!
I sold my car, got an ebike.
Used that money to add to my savings and quit my job to trade cash secured puts and cash covered calls.
I work 3 hours a day now and ride my bike the rest of the day!
Don't get an expensive ebike, use your savings to trade options!
Trust me on this.
I'm the happiest I've ever been!
yep all you need is a $1-2k bike. Good enough for most people. Most ebikes in this price range can reach up to 28 mph and have a range of atleast 40 miles. Good enough for most people.
What are cash secured puts?
Just got my ebike today. After 3 hours of riding around, I believe I made the best decision. I live in NYC and my building does not have parking. So I can easily put my bike inside my apartment. That was the ultimate bonus.
One thing I like about e-bikes is I still also take public transport, and where I'm from they have a certain place for e-bikes and bikes, and if the train is stopped for whatever reason I can still do what I need to do, it'll just take me longer
YES. Thank you so much for leaving this video up, I really like it!
However: You can transport other more than one person in cars, you don't have to worry about rain, snow wind etc. You also have more space for storage
You can have both
In germany you need an insurance for e bikes that drives faster than 25 km/h
Same for Finland
Still cheaper than car insurances I guess.
25 km / h plus in Australia and they aren't street legal
Europe and Australia have a 25 KM/h limit for regular bikes. In Canada and the U.S., regular e-bikes can go 32 KM/h without a licence. There are 45 KM/h in North America that don't require a licence, but not all states/provinces allow them yet (right now they're allowed in about 40% of jurisdictions).
Next video: why you should live in Canada
My husband has an e dragon scooter with cargo. I have an Emmo scooter. We put our groceries in his cargo section when we go shopping every weekend. He picks up stuff at Canadian Tire, Home Depot etc when he needs something. We’ve saved tons of money. We love them.
How much?
Awesome you definitely got me interested in getting one. Thanks
I made a 60v ebike with a 56 tooth front crank that allows me to pedal with the motor at high speeds and I absolutely love it! I can reach speeds up to 45 mph. I'll occasionally use it to commute 25 miles (one way) to my work, charge it there then take it back. Still have my car for when I need to make better time, or if the weather doesn't permit using the ebike, but it's an awesome extra option to have that helps a ton on saving on gas. I almost exclusively use it for doing errands in my town where I only need to travel a couple miles..Meanwhile there's people around me taking massive trucks to stores only a mile away from them, absolutely ridiculous.
For now you don't need insurance or license there for ebike , it'll come
Licence maybe, insurance unlikely IMO. At least for class 1 e-bikes. For class 2 and class 3, though, yes probably insurance and licence will eventually come.
That’ll be sooo hard to regulate. Especially if the bikes look like normal bikes.
@@ScrapKing73 I REFUSE to pay insurance on an eletric bike. And I don't have a license. My bike is an aventon level commuter bike so it looks like a normal bike. Shouldn't have any problems should they do that

IDK about insurance but in the US the federal laws are trying to encourage States not to require a license for ebikes.

nice that your recommendation first a style I'd like perfectly
where i live this bike is considered a moped and i would need to get insurance for it. If you dont have a drivers licence for a car you would also need to get that or a Moped licence.
WEIRD FLEX BUT OKAY
My problem of using this over a car is people stealing them. Even the best locks can be broken in seconds and if your bike is an expensive ebike or even a cheap one it's going to be a target. So it's not going to be something people can generally use unless it's to a work place they can bring their bike inside. Recreation is great but this can't replace a car in most cities. Sucks because I would use this instead of a car if it weren't for that issue.
Real!!
#1 reason stopping me from buying 2 wheeled electric vehicles
Yeah anyone got any ideas on how to stop them
Hate when people say this like there isn't a million articles/videos on how to prevent bike theft. As someone who has been biking for 4 years, I've never had my bike stolen. I used to leave my bike outside for hours during work and never had it stolen. I go to the store several times a week and often leave my bike outside for 20+ minutes without issues. There are so many ways to prevent bike theft. For example, it's recommended to used atlast 2 locks. One around the back wheel/frame, and another around the frame. You can also put a bike alarm that sends an alert to your phone when your bike is touched/moved. Another thing you can do is add a tracker under your bike seat or in a bag on your bike so even if some one somehow managing to get past your 2 locks and your alarm system, you can still track them down. There, solved your theft issue. Not that hard lol.
@@thelonercoder5816 If my bike had a tracker, would I attempt to recover the bike myself? The police usually don't respond.
@@timothykeith1367yes go get it yourself. Maybe bring a friend. Cops won’t help unless you go beat ts out of the guy.
"You can even go on the sidewalk because no one gives a shit". Really?! And you don't need insurance or to worry about traffic violations? Ok, Canada plays by different rules to where I live😅

Apparently studies show they are stolen at the same rate as regular bikes.

Hi Richard what kind of camera did you use for this and how’d you mount it ? Very cool post.. def considering
Not requiring a license or having any rules as to where this vehicle is supposed to drive seems very dangerous lol, especially when it can go THAT fast ...
well in germany this (the firefly from Sur Ron)is considered the same as other small 2 wheel power vehicles (the X bike isn't even legal on streets here) so you still need a license that you can get when you are 15 year olds, so with that falling in the same category as motorcycles, what would you guys recommend to get?
Hey man, I saw this video a few years ago before I bought my first ebike and it made me fall in love with the Sur Ron. Now i have one of my own because of your mention. It's the love of my life and I just want to say thanks for introducing me to this!
I do have to say that there are some ongoing maintenance stuff with my bikes. You have to buy tools and new tires/tubes etc, plus you need to buy full gear to be safe. And the downside is that I have to make smaller trips to the grocery store. That's the only real inconvenience.
You make some good points..for traveling long distances you can always rent a car or take an uber or lift
well
in my country only difference between motocycle and ebike is
you have to use cranks to spin and move bike foreward .....
I enjoyed this video.

What is the model you have, and what you recommend if you live in Montréal with snow?
In Spain it’s illegal to have an ebike over 250w and that goes over 25kmh, also it need to pedal assist you, you can’t have an accelerator
The same law in norway, but is nevertheless a better alternative.
It is the same law in all of EU. It's an European law
wow those are terrible laws not helping anyone

Do you ever go in the regular roads and do the 45mph in say a 50mph zone?
Did you keep your Zero FXS? I find it insane that insurance is $5k a year for an electric motorcycle, though.
I have a car, a big bike and a road bicycle. I like all of them for different reasons But comparing an e-bike with a car and just saying you save money is a bit poor reasoning. What about other argument like: Passengers? Shopping bags full? Long distance trip? Rainy days? No need of any special equipment. Air con, heater, etc...
What kind eletric bike is it
No license/insurance required despite driving on public roads? Is that right? Surely at the speeds e-bikes can go, insurance and a licence are mandatory? Or does Canada have a specific rule on e-bikes?
No, the rules don't allow that in Canada either. He acknowledges that in the video, but isn't worried about it because all they can do is give him a fine, not a ticket.
Does anyone know about the laws of the Sur-Ron ebike in australia, because it was really hard to find information, some people saying that they were road legal others not, has anyone had any luck finding good information?
i believe in certain provinces and states if you go over the e-bike speed limit, they can impound it. or even if your motor wattage is higher than your cities law. so no it won't be relaxing and worry free.
i used to look into e-bikes but for the cost of a good bike (6k-10k), and only being able to ride 35 kph max, it's not worth it.
i got a regular road bike, 200 mm cranks, 70T chainring, and i can average 40 kph, and with effort plug 50-60 kph.
all the benefits of an e-bike + cheaper + less maintenance + exercise
Can they be ridden in the wintertime?
Are E-bikes still useful during the winter with heavy ice and snow?
Yes if you get ones with fat enough tires, and you have good bike handling skills, sure.
I have a fat bike and still slippery and hard to maneuver over thick snow. if I am driving over thick snow, I will slow my speed down to avoid falling off. in Toronto where I live, roads are constantly salted so most of the time the snow is not thick and roads are easy to ride on in the winter. if you are not driving on main roads, it may be not salted and you may experience difficulty driving on it.
If you got Handling Skills then Thats Good Enough I Rode my Bike Today in Winter Due to an Emergency I had to do and I handled the Bike Pretty well even when I was about to Fall but don't Go too slow maintain your Speed not too fast or slow ah and yes better to put winter Tires on your Bike for better grip and handling.
Dude, what happened to the gaming stream?
How would one fare in a very hot place like arizona? Would the battery catch fire??
What bike do you have again ??
You could also check out 2 stroke engines and centripetal clutch operated 4 strokes that you could put on bikes. Get going up to 35 some mph. Just don’t go fast in front of the cops, and don’t run anyone over. Ahahaha. Bikes work fine for city traveling in the summer/spring and fall months, but I’ve still got a car for the winter ones when everything freezes over and there’s penis deep snow everywhere. E bikes help you save on gas and that’s why I like them. I’m a poor bastard so I’m going to be using my e-bike for traveling up until it’s beyond repair.
I agree with getting an e-bike!
great video Richard!
I'm now getting a bike. I have had many cars but I dont like riding with other people cos idk I am solo wolf but I'm now going to invest in 1.
Don't need to replace tires? I've worn down the tread on my bicycle to the point of replacement a couple of times, I assume an e-bike is similar.
any budget ebikes you guys can recommend?
What riding gear do you use in this video?
If its just for travel in a city, normal bicycles work pretty well.
For sure they do, I did it for years. But now I'm on an e-bike and it's enhanced my life. Pennies on a charge (literally, as it's about 3 cents per charge.. maybe 25 cents per charge if you include the wear and tear on the battery). I get where I need to go faster, but still get the amount of exercise I want. Heck, I can get better exercise on the e-bike as I can interval training on it by turning the battery off strategically and using the extra weight of the e-bike to add intensity to that portion of the workout.
People are lazy bastards
you can use normal bike however if you are going to commute to school or work and you need speed to get there in shortest time possible, it's better to drive an ebike. you always get consistent and faster speed with an ebike compared to a regular bike and you don't sweat. if you drive a regular bike to work or school, you will sweat and stink and it may take you longer to get to your destination. if I want to exercise, I can still do that with my ebike by selecting lowest pedal assist option or turning off the motor on my way back to home when my shift at work ends. also I find that when I ride a regular bike, I don't always feel motivated to ride it whereas with my ebike I always feel that I want to be on the road, so it's motivating to get me to exercise and be outdoors. I ride my ebike on daily basis to work and I don't regret it.
@@the.communist showing up to work all sweaty from riding my bike sucks, not laY
Where do you park it to avoid theft?
Hi. are these legal in Canada. Thought ebikes are only limited to 32 km/h and they need to have pedals attached. I live in Canada too. I wanted to get the high speed ebike like the one you have however I always hesitated because they are not street legal. how do you get to drive this ebike in Canada without getting in trouble? did you ever get stopped by cops and how do you confront them? can they confiscate the bike if you drive ebike that's not street legal? what is the most penalty can a cop do if you get caught driving this bike? I currently own a fat ebike that can go about 40 km/h. I rarely drive at that speed because I am scared of cops. when I see cops I slow down to 32 km/h
What about if you have to go on freeways?
How well do the batteries work during the winter?
They work fine, but you do get reduced range on a charge. How much it's reduced depends on how cold it gets.
Remove the pack and bring it inside , once in use the battery will create its own heat in the cold
Oh shit been eyeing a sur rom for a while, how’s the sitting position? Look kinda awkward
Would you ever try an electric unicycle?
Hey VG I was wondering about your opinion on Effective Altruism. How do you feel about working for large sums of money to donate to charities providing nets to children with Malaria. Is effective altruism something that interests you?
Do you think e bikes are safe I was considering one but I’ve seen videos on the safety of them?
You're a big guy. Is it difficult to find a bike/motorcycle that is comfortable if you are well over 6 feet tall?
So different in Europe and I'm in Ireland.
Legally anything that goes above 25kmh with pedal assistance needs a license and insurance and cannot travel in bike lanes.
So what you are riding (four years ago) can only be ridden on roads as an e-motorbike.
Canada was mentioned. Is it similar to Europe or the US there?
Anyone in the uk got one of these? Can u take them on main roads, motorways etc?
Well what ebike do you have?
Because all the ebikes im finding sucks
I just got an E-pioneer that I would recommend. Only prob is that it's kinda bulky.
What do you want from an e-bike? I have a pair of pedal assist class 3 e-bikes (45 KM/h max assist) and I love them! My next one will probably be an ultralight (27 pound) class 1 e-bike (32 KM/h max assist).
This is great for trips around the city, it will save me on gas. However, 3 and half hour drive to Las Vegas once a year for work, I see a car being more beneficial.
What’s the life span of an e-bike?
I sold my car last week, and ordered an ebike. My parents think I wasted my money, and that I should be saving toward another car. I work FT from home. I really don’t need a car right now.
What about in the US? Do you happen to know the laws regarding the whole "no license" part of this experience? I believe it varies per state, but I heard something like anything above 35 mph, at least I believe in Wisconsin, would be considered something you need a form of licensing for. I could be wrong, was wondering if you or anyone else may have any knowledge on this aspect of the E-Bike somewhat murky laws there.
Looked a bit more into it, it appears "The state of Wisconsin (WI) defines electric bikes as a bicycle with a motor attached. It must have pedals that are operational, an electric motor that is less than 750w and have a maximum speed of 20mph on level ground." and also "Riders must possess a valid driver’s license, operators license or instructional permit." Well, that takes away a lot of the fun unfortunately. Still would love one, but that is quite the shame.
@@NightOfTheLiving8bit According to what I've been reading into here, at least in my state, no registration is required and you only need an instructional permit as a minimum to make it technically legal, assuming you follow the other requirements like being 20 mph or lower, that is. Probably very different per state though, mine may be a little more on the less strict side than many others. Also, I would agree that many of these things are different than presented, but in all fairness he lives in Canada and may just have been representing information specifically from his country for this video, may not have even properly looked into outside of his country here. I couldn't really say anything for certain either way however, pretty much unconfirmable in that aspect, won't really bother with that since I'm not him. But, nevertheless regardless of that situation, I believe I might make the spring on perhaps building my own electric bike setup that meet the minimum requirements in my state, either way for me the environmental aspect and gas price savings would make it worth using a good amount of the time for me as long as it's not a ridiculously long trip. We'll see how all that plays out. Haha But yeah, thanks for the reply brother, appreciate the reply and feedback on everything.

That's what I want to know.
In ohio you need to register, lisence and insure any vehicle that can go over 25 mph or so; scooter, ebikes, etc.
@Vegan Gains, just got a motorbike and need vegan gloves and other equipment, what gear do you use? any recommendations?
I'd recommend the Rukka Varium gloves, scorpion covert pro jeans, and scorpion covert flannel shirt, and there's a bunch of different boots you can get. If you want a riding shoe the alpinstars sektor shoes are good, if you want a full on boot for a sport bike sidi mag-1 boots are really good and if you want a motocross/ofroad boot the tcx comp evo Michelin boots are really good. I use all of this gear except for the sidi mag-1 boots as I don't have a sport bike.

@@blackrifle3742 I did a 290 kilometre single day trip on my e-bike. I carried a second battery and two chargers, and charged at every stop. Made it through the day no problem.
