I always ask them one question... "What is the only thing on your vehicle that makes contact with the ground?" This is why I've been watching you guys for years.
A few years ago I was house hunting in the middle of winter. Had a 2019 Civic Type R with some winter tires on. As I was leaving an open house one of the realtors was out front in his truck and was spinning all over trying to pull away from the curb. He got out and was laughing. We talked a bit and I noticed he had some really bare all-season tire on. I said something like "Ah yeah maybe you need some winters" and he responded with "no that can't be it, it's all wheel drive." The AWD marketing you see on TV really works apparently. He wouldn't believe me!

Hi, from Japan!! Todd’s philosophy is right. Type R is definitely the one of brilliant cars but it can not get 1st place when we judge it based on everyday drive. Also, Paul’s philosophy is right!! That Acura is seriously an amazing car; I agree with Paul's ranking of these 3. The Audi (and Golf R, and I say this as the owner of a 2018 Golf R) are just too sterile and boring to be true enthusiast cars, in my view. As always, great content guys. Looking forward to your next video and podcast.
@ricktrue8441 ive got a 2018 golf R, you're right. Definitely better build feel than when i sat in the Type S. Noise inside differs, too. However, i do miss the raw feel/noise of the Type S which i miss from my little Fiesta ST.
@joshuavadaketh4905 - I agree the Golf R gets boring real quick UNTIL you start the modifications lol. Clearly you've left your R in Clark Kent mode and when go FBO and add both a TCU and ECU stage 2 tune the car becomes an animal on the streets. I am well past the ago of 19 so I am not too interested in going to the track every weekend but what I do have is the ability to throw this car around the windy and twisty country roads and feel the power. Add in some sway bars and this car grips like a beast. Fast then the stock the RS3, this car get me to 60 in just 3.59 seconds as verifiable by my handle on draggy!
The FL5 Type R is an amazing machine. I was very close to buying the Type S but the Type R(interior) just felt more special to me personally which is what made me purchase mine back in January.
You two are still the best at really covering the details and nuances of how a car really drives, well done. My only thought is you should have added your personal choices of the Individual or Custom Settings you would choose in each car.
Thank you! We consider this a big compliment. And we appreciate the custom choices question - the reality is they would change over time and depending upon the type of driving being done. Thanks for watching!

Great comparison. One sticking point for me, when you mention that something might be different because of tires(ie Audi S3 with all seasons), do not leave that in the 'what if' section. If you have the means to, swap the tires for something sportier (as a lot of owners would do on their own), and erase the doubt.
The Type S is a remarkable car and value at 53K. The driving experience and luxurious interior are unmatched at this price point. I own and S and have owned S4’s. The acura is more fun. The S3 interior is more plasticy than the type s and the Audi feels less expensive in comparison. Driving the acura is all smiles. Commuting, high speed cruising, punching it on on-ramps… the smiles never end…. Find your favorite mountain road and have a blast. This car is what driving is all about!
I'm glad you guys did this. I've been in the market for the last year trying to come up with my next vehicle (replacing a Focus ST). Last year I had the chance to test drive a new GTI (it was too clinical), CTR prices are ridiculous, and Integra ASpec was too tame. I got to test drive an ITS when it launched and fell in love. I'm on the list at my local dealer, just need one to arrive in the color scheme I want... Emotionally I still want the Type R, but the Type S does everything I want from a driving perspective and puts the creature comforts back that I have in the Focus (except for a sun roof).
The Type S would be my choice but without a red interior. However, since the Type S and R are demanding a 5 to 10K mark up it would definitely be the S3 for me in that awesome blue. I just wish they made a manual version as you mentioned. All 3 are awesome cars! I still haven't seen the Type R or Type S in person! Thanks for another high quality production!
I've heard about these markups for years. When I bought my TLX type S, I told the dealer I'm not paying any markups and they said everyone gets the same price, which is MSRP. I ended up paying like 3200 less than msrp. If I was shopping for another car I would do exactly the same thing. If you don't pay it, they can't get it. Very simple.

I walked out of multiple dealerships.

And a slight turbo lag. And the fact that not being made in Japan you may find more factory issues with quality than the Type R made in Japan. I had 2 quality issues with mine and ended up having Acura take care of one and the other one was easier for me to fix than waiting for them to fix it. But what a car!
I was thinking about getting something to replace my Focus RS, but then I had to drive to an out of town wedding this past weekend in Blackwater Falls, WV. It ate up those smooth mountain roads, switchbacks and all, like they were nothing. It was amazing, and now I’m thinking I’ve already got the perfect car for me. Maybe. 😂
If you complain that Audi didn't do enough on the S3, there is an RS3. The others here are the top of their models. I know the price.point is closer, but not the best of each brands. The interior and build quality of the German can't be denied over the Japanese.
I would say it's more 50/50. Germans got the luxury of you got the money. That being said entry cars don't have the nicer interior, as they even pointed out that the S3 felt barely nicer than the Golf. Build quality is Japanese all day, any day. Origin matters too. Both German and Japanese cars built in America and Mexico are not as good quality as ones built in Europe and Japan.
Good comparison and a great video, as usual from you! As much as I like small, zippy cars like the S3, long-term ownership costs (and depreciation) would steer me toward the Honda or Acura. Given the choice between those two, if priced closely, I would definitely choose the Type S, for all the reasons you pointed out. More features, more luxurious, and I think a better value proposition than the Type R. It also looks more special and rare to me, because there aren't a million Integras on the road already, like there are Civics. So the Type S will stand out a little more, which I like. In addition, for me personally, I'm not a fan of the Type R's seats, with its large bolsters and tight fit. I'm a big guy with short legs, and getting in and out of the Type R is difficult and potentially painful, given where those bottom bolters are placed. Plus, the Acura's seats would just be more comfortable for a daily driver and for trips.
In the past, the BMW 3 series (non-M) would have been the top contender in this price range. Now the ultimate drivng sedan for $50k is a FWD Honda/Acura.
Because the M340 is in a whole different class now. That is a whole better car than the Type R and S. Legendary B58 Straight 6 with rear drive or rear drive bias AWD. Way more power and true driving dynamics. With Type S marked up to 60k, I tell people to get a M340i. It’s a no brainer. I would highly recommend an RS3, but they are all sold out. If you can find one, don’t pass on it.
The Type R is more involving to drive than an M340 in my opinion. No doubt the BMW is faster. So is a Tesla Model 3 performance. I wouldn’t pay a big markup though.
My S3 is lovely in the snow here in the inland northwest. And I also drive a lot, so it’s a win there for me, too. Though, I did add parts and a tune to make it more exciting. 😎
Front track width being wider than the rear is exactly how it should be in a FWD car such as the Civic Type R. It help with body rotation and the rear doesn't fight the with the front when cornering sharply under throttle.
You two are the best in the biz. Thanks for another incredible video with fantastic content. I can tell you guys just love cars, and you especially love amazing driving dynamic and engagement which I admire in you. THANK YOU for acknowledging the reality of the market for these cars - so many automotive journalists rip on the Type S for having a $7K higher MSRP than the Type R. But that’s not what is happening for sale prices. I just bought a Type S for less than the average selling price of the Type R. I have a car problem and was dumb to sell a FK8 Type R in my past, but you guys nailed it - the Type R too hardcore for daily use (and too rough of a suspension that upsets the wife). After a month in my Type S, all I can say is Wow the Type S is incredible and truly has a different vibe from the Type R yet it leaves me missing nothing on the performance side.
I'm a 43 year old lawyer sitting in gridlock in SoCal on my way to courthouses all over the place. I've got a BMW M240i with (sadly) the 8AT, but I would absolutely 100% daily the CTR and feel like a kid in the 90's reading Sport Compact Car again.
Todd made a great point. These cars need to be a blend of track/weekend and daily driver. We want something fun that we can drive every day. If we are looking for a weekender/track car, bring in a used m2 comp or a 981 Cayman S to compare to. But if we are comparing daily hot hatches, let’s focus on the things that make a daily hot hatch great.
Great video! Y'all have some of the best video production online. Just a note, on the scoring section starting at 30:45 there's a typo that says it's an Audi S4 when it should say S3.

Well played Gentlemen. Thank you for the great comparison. I was getting worried. You two were agreeing way too much in several videos in a row. Ha! “So I’m right but still wrong. Just another day on this channel…” 😅
Having owned both an AudiS3 and a Civic Type R the big difference is running costs. The Audi , heavy on fuel , higher insurance and servicing costs plus thr Civic is more fun.
I think the previous S3 looked better, but I am biased. I would definitely get another (since I'll probably miss out on an available/affordable RS3), though I'd be interested to test drive a type-s when it comes time...
Great video as usual and nice insights on each car. I appreciate your work and efforts! The Type R certainly has the dealer mark-ups as you state (5k-10k). However, I believe that the Type S also has them from what I have seen and this might push the entry price close to the 60k+ range. Thus, you must consider that "step-up" in price if one intends to buy the Type S. Also, I would guess that the Type R is for a younger buyer demographic than the Type S buyer who would tend to be older and not want the "racer" image that the car projects ....
Seems like 6MT turbo sport sedans might be an end of an era in less than 10 years. I started out as a Honda fan and upgraded to Acura (current rides 18 RLX Sport Hybrid & 19 MDX Adv Sport Hybrid). Had an allocation reserved for a Type S as soon as they came out, but ultimately could not convince the wife to drive a stick… We considered RS3 but ended up going BMW and ordering an m340ix after a couple test drives with both. Can definitely agree with the video (in my experience) that the quattro FWD biased AWD in the Audis doesn’t feel quite right and really leans towards understeering where as the xdrive systems with the RWD biased AWD in the BMWs felt much better with their tendency to lean more towards oversteer first. Plus how can you argue with the B58, it’s just a joke at this point lol
@@CJ-gh4eh I have! Drove a friend’s CTR, that’s what convinced me to get an allocation on the S as soon as they came available from my local dealer. They are great cars no doubt. Would love to see a great fast auto like the modern BMW ZFs or Audis DCT system as an option but totally understandable why that’s not in the cards for the Type S/R.
I have an S3 and a Type R. Love both. Drive the Type R when I want a more focused and engaged driving experience. Drive the S3 when I want to chill or the weather is bad. S3 is faster for sure.
But if you’re sharing it with a spouse that doesn’t drive manual, then as good as the CTR and Type S are, the S3 just give you more of that dual personality. I’ve never really liked VWs manuals because they don’t feel very crisp and for me I wouldn’t drive a manual just for the sake of it, I’d drive it because it improves the experience and for me, even though I agree it doesn’t crack off shifts as fast as I’d want it, VWs dual clutch is so good that it doesn’t really take anything away for me.
@@dubsessed9790 I’ve been really considering at least getting a DSG tune. I had a Mk6 GTI that was state 1 with a DSG tune and the car just felt totally different and so much better. Great video! All are great cars! I respectfully disagree with you about the tires. Yes the tires make a huge huge difference but when you combine it with the Quattro you have something else. The front wheel only will not be able to compete with the Quattro.
Speed does not equal fun dynamics. I have driven a mk 7.5 R, FL5 and Type S. The Germans can do speedy but the Japanese know driver engagement. Of course there is a different product for everyone but the natural feel of the Honda products despite being so modern is so hard to beat.
I really liked my S3 and I modified the heck out of it, but just couldn't love it without a manual trans. Sold it, and got a GR Corolla which has a lot fewer features, no luxury, is a lot cruder and a lot slower but more fun which at the end of the day is what I wanted. If they would give me a manual and ditch the moonroof, I'd go back in a heartbeat.

That would be a cool comparison! I'm from Saskatchewan, Canada. Manual cars are a treat over here. They are disappearing and hard to come by, even cars in general are getting to be less common. Half ton trucks rule the market over here, no manual options in any new half ton in Canada. I'd love to get some more euro options over here for hot hatches, but they would never sell unfortunately.
The S3 is for people who daily their cars in traffic, ie the real world for many of us. It is hands down the easiest to live with. The Type S is still great in normal life, not as comfortable as the Audi, but much more sporting to drive. The Type R is for people who will spend more time on the track than roads. Definitely for enthusiasts only if you plan on DD the thing.

I know you didn't ask me😊 but RS3 all the way. It's a more unique vehicle. It's more powerful and, therefore, quicker and faster. Audi interior. That said, the Acura is not a downgrade. Just different. Those 2 cars won't be cross-shopped much imho.

What you didn't explore are the real track experience of the S and R... You'd be surprised to learn the Type S actually matches and outperforms the Type R... You get the best of both worlds with the Type S, with a tip to refinement.
One of the problems those cars all have are 1 - 2yr used BMW M3s with a manual. Same $50k price. Dynamics are probably better than any of the three. 11:33 - I've driven in snow in the northeast of the US for 20 years in only rear-wheel drive cars and only once found myself needing all-wheel drive. One time, and if I had snow tires on the rear I bet even that one time wouldn't count.
I couldn't agree more with your assessment regarding drive wheels and tires. My wife and I live in the Great Lakes snowbelt of Southwestern Ontario and we daily a 2014 Civic EX 5MT and a 2021 GMC Canyon Elevation Duramax 2WD. We often get criticized for factory ordering a 2WD truck in the snowbelt but with our Michelin X-Ice tires on the truck (and Goodyear WinterCommands on the car) we can plow through anything the Great Lakes throw at us. We have kept a running total of the number of times we could have used 4WD in our truck and we're sitting at 5 times in 3 years and even in those situations, we got through with 2WD so 4WD just isn't worth the $5k premium to us. Honda made the right choice with these cars by sticking with FWD and their development efforts have paid off. If we were replacing our Civic today we'd probably get an Si, but the Type-S is the dream for sure.

The CTR and ITR are like a 911 GT3 vs a 911 S/T: track trim vs sport tourer trim. Same car, slightly different niches.
Excellent analogy.
the ST is actually a lot different than the normal GT3 which is why its like 2x the price lol

Word on the street is, a module can be put into the adaptive suspension from the type s into the type r.
Yes you can, and presumably the other way around too if the Type S rolls too much on track.
I bet the Golf R feels more expensive, quiet, and refined. Asian cars always feel like your driving a 55 gallon oil drum.

@@hotdog9262 - I'd still take the S3 over these guys...
I really hope the day comes where you can regularly find the Type-R for MSRP, I want one so bad. Great video
Thanks for watching!
@@MikeYurbasovich see, that's the RIGHT way to go about it. Got mine in Tiger eye pearl, it’s so fun. It’s the sweet spot in my opinion. Only cons are no memory seats that’s a big one on manual transmissions
And a slight turbo lag. And the fact that not being made in Japan you may find more factory issues with quality than the Type R made in Japan. I had 2 quality issues with mine and ended up having Acura take care of one and the other one was easier for me to fix than waiting for them to fix it.
But what a car!
I agree also usb c in the back and vents
I was thinking about getting something to replace my Focus RS, but then I had to drive to an out of town wedding this past weekend in Blackwater Falls, WV. It ate up those smooth mountain roads, switchbacks and all, like they were nothing. It was amazing, and now I’m thinking I’ve already got the perfect car for me. Maybe. 😂
If you complain that Audi didn't do enough on the S3, there is an RS3. The others here are the top of their models. I know the price.point is closer, but not the best of each brands. The interior and build quality of the German can't be denied over the Japanese.
new rs3 interior is just all screen. its also a lot more expensive
Most German cars are a joke until you start spending 75k.
The interior of menew bmw and merc is worse than hyundai.
Great Point about the Luxury Automatic vs. Manual.
Great breakdown on the difference between the type R and type S. Well done.
My S3 is lovely in the snow here in the inland northwest. And I also drive a lot, so it’s a win there for me, too. Though, I did add parts and a tune to make it more exciting. 😎
Easy ecu flash and trans flash on my 17’, some snow tires, summer tires and the S3 was a rocket. ✌️
It’s the best car out of the three
Front track width being wider than the rear is exactly how it should be in a FWD car such as the Civic Type R.

You’ve given us huge compliments here, and were grateful our work resonates with you! Thank you for watching and congrats on your Type S!

Todd made a great point. These cars need to be a blend of track/weekend and daily driver. We want something fun that we can drive every day. But if we are comparing daily hot hatches, let’s focus on the things that make a daily hot hatch great.

The new Type R is just so good looking. They really nailed the stance and styling of the car. And I even like the wing!
Having owned both an AudiS3 and a Civic Type R the big difference is running costs. The Audi , heavy on fuel , higher insurance and servicing costs plus thr Civic is more fun.

That type S exhaust note sounds so pleasing to my ears.😁
Type r 1st, Acura 2nd, S3 3rd
I agree.

Stellar piece guys! It felt like your core content but updates. Really love the Type S but simply cannot spend that much on a FWD car.
Why though? You’ll be hard to find a brand new rwd car that handles better.
@@ROVA00 You just have more control with a RWD car and can also provide yourself a little more entertainment. I enjoy the feeling of the rear end moving around a bit (if you want) coming off a corner. @@clubracer6 I’ve never heard anyone say they have more control driving in the snow with a rwd. Learn something new every day!
@@ROVA00 In a FWD car you as asking the front wheels do do just about everything. In FWD you have much more weight on the front axle. The front wheels are also tasked with doing most of the braking, putting down power and on top of it steering the car. RWD front engine cars typically have 50/50 weight distribution.
@@clubracer6 but you want the weight on the wheels that are getting power to have traction on slippery roads. That’s why a FWD will always do better in the snow than a RWD (assuming equal tires). Would you guys be willing to do another WRX versus BRZ video like the one you did nine years ago? Particularly for the manual version of the WRX.
The Audi is not even an option for me that Auto is boring. I got myself a Type S and it drives like a charm.
I own both and they are both great cars. You’re missing out if you think you’re too cool for a dual clutch
@ I mean I believe you I have driven a S3 before it’s great and all but I rather shift my own gears.
Would be interesting to see how a used CT4-V Blackwing with a manual matches up.
The DSG tunes (combined with the 7 speed version) are awesome, shifts very fast and improved my 0-60 time
@@dubsessed9790 I’ve been really considering at least getting a DSG tune. I had a Mk6 GTI that was state 1 with a DSG tune and the car just felt totally different and so much better. My S3 is still under warranty for about a year and a half so I don’t want to jeopardize that by tuning it. Do you know if Audi can detect a DSG tune? I know they can definitely detect ECU tunes when the scan the car but don’t know if the DSG automatically flags it to.
Don't share, the spouse should buy their own car. Thankfully that is a non issue for me, as my fiancé does not even drive and says she never will.
@@fortheloveofnoise Well she does have her own car but say we're out and about in mine and for some reason I need her to drive or am unable to drive, then there's no problems. Even in that unlikely scenario, I feel better knowing she can still drive the car if needed. I'll reserve the manual for a dedicated weekend toy but for a daily, I find today's dual clutches and very fast torque converters hard to beat as a balance of fun and practicality.

Great video with one HUGE caveat. These are NOT executive cars and labeling them as such is damaging.
The S3 is for people who daily their cars in traffic, ie the real world for many of us. It is hands down the easiest to live with.
The Type S is still great in normal life, not as comfortable as the Audi, but much more sporting to drive.

I know you didn't ask me😊 but RS3 all the way. It's a more unique vehicle. It's more powerful and, therefore, quicker and faster. Audi interior. That said, the Acura is not a downgrade. Just different. Those 2 cars won't be cross-shopped much imho.
@@100PROOF-GI hear you and as an owner of a 2019 RS3 - I love it. The engine, the sound, and the experience are amazing. I am still in love with the car after four years. AND / BUT after a weekend with a new Type S I was so impressed. The handling is so engaging. I agree they won’t be cross shopped but it is close.
@@100PROOF-G Is quicker and faster the same as more fun?
@tassielorenzo7070 not always. In this case I say no. The Acura is admittedly probably more fun for a true driver. The RS3 just has some things that are what sends it over the top for me.
@@shanemulhern8907 I hope to acquire an RS3 soon. It's the only car that will "do it" for me. ENJOY!
1-2 year old m3 for 50k? Barely get 2018s for that price. I looked at multiple 2-3 year old m3 still holding well above 65k
