I watched you at a jazz band at wcu I'm in fith grade and I really love your music I'm actually really fascinated with guitar and I want to learn it keep it joclyne
Props for letting your lovely voice do exactly what it does and no more Jocelyn! You’re one of the singers who inspired me to add vocals to my jazz guitar study.
You play beautifully! I especially like the way you comp for your bass player. As a (very) old Bronx bass player, I can say with tell you with a degree of confidence that bass players love when our accompaniest gets us: rhythmically, harmonically, and especially, dynamically!
What impresses me most is that permanent smile on Jocelyn’s face. As a jazz guitarist, I can say it is so hard to maintain while playing. She’s so professional.
Thank you. Great stuff! Highly appropriate to have this great young woman rising star play on International Women's Day. I loved the new tune No Fun At All (and yes it was an Out Of Nowhere contrafact!). Some interesting comments on strings and picks. I like the Rich Severson idea of light basses (20-48) with 13-15 tops. If you don't have a bendy thumb (I am too old and nothing bends except the bits that shouldn't!), try Jim Dunlop Primetone semi round 1.3s. Like mandolin picks, they give a mellow tone.... Thanks again, Jocelyn and band.
Saw you on That Pedal Show and the algorithm dropped me here. I’ve subbed and will explore your channel. The next great musical Gould to originate from Canada.
Not one lady guitarist has reached your skill levels, let alone your understanding of music theory which is self evident, since the late great Emily Remler IMHO. Still thoroughly enjoying your CD which you signed. I love these very personal episodes. Great musicians all. God bless! ❤
Great show, again Jocelyn. I love the way you include everyone and bring your band into the chats. Saw you at the Pizza Express, Dean St. it was a great show. I hope you can tour in the uk again soon. Maybe with the band. Keep up the great work, composition and fantastic playing and singing. And thanks for your fun shows.
You play beautifully! I especially liked the way you comped for the bass solo. Being a (Very) old Bronx bass player, I always love when an accompanist "gets " us: harmonically, rhymically, and dynamically.
That was so GREAT! Thank you so much to all of you for playing this set and sharing with us! I really love your writing-and playing- Jocelyn, please keep sharing your new songs...I love the lyrics in the song your sang...It's so inspiring to hear new songs in the jazz idiom that so many of us love. There's just so much expressiveness possible...Thank you for answering questions for us jazz guitar students, and btw I am using your 3 notes per string scale exercise every day and it has made a big difference! Keep up the good work, take care of yourself and don't forget us on Vancouver Island B.C.! ...Would love to see you here in Victoria some time in your travels. Cheers and thanks again, Mike
You just wrote that!? So nice ! I'm so impressed. And by the big beautiful clear sound you are getting. Clear like Malone, but more warm tone. Sorry I missed the live show. Was out hearing my teacher - Mathieu Soucy. Also good. And thanks - I got 3 vinyl LPs by Kenny Burrell since you mentioned you planned to check him out this summer. John
Professor Gould, I think you *might* want to revisit your discussion about description of strings and the difference between roundwound and flatwound. Except for the first two (or sometimes three) strings, which are not wound at all, but just single wires of different gauges, the "wound" strings have a central core that is either a round or hexagonal wire, that is wrapped by the other wire (roundwound), or wrapped by something more resembling a tape of metal. There are also "monel" strings that actually are roundwounds that are then shaved to external flatness (as you described flatwounds), but that is very different from flatwound, even if it feels similar (and Monels were developed first, before true flats). I usually use TI Jazz Swing 12s flatwound on my archtops, though the 18-inch behemoth Levin Style A Deluxe gets TI George Benson 13 flat set. To clarify one other thing, when you said you use "12s" on the lower four strings, and "13's" on the first two strings, you might want to clarify that you're referring to the strings from a 12 or 13 "set" (named for the first string) - but I get the idea of using the heavier set for the first two strings and the lighter set on the other four - Perhaps you might approach TI to get "signature" sets like that, in say, 12-47 or 13-50 - I would certainly be interested in Jocelyn Gould signature sets like that rather than buying two sets of not-inexpensive TI strings and then just discarding or giving away the unused strings.
When I feel like I am struggling in the practice room, it is usually because I feel I am no longer progressing in terms of technique and improvisation. When this happens, I usually try to pick a tune I don't know from an album or a real book to learn, and then I don't feel so bad.
For even a nicer fatter smoother tone I use the reverse side of the pick...the side opposite the pointy side. Might want to check it out for the hell of it. Plus, there is more pick area to grab the string. Very interesting stuff. I'm enjoying your channel.

That's so great! Keep it up and I hope to hear you play one day!
This tune came to me from “Out Of Nowhere”! Long live the art of contrafact. 😜

If I could play like that I'd be smiling the whole time too 👏
I'm watching these in non consecutive order, you can't stop me! I mean I don't think you can, maybe you can, please dont, cheers!
Lol, whatever works for you!
Piano players have techniques for playing their keys that make their own sound too.
Great band. Love you folks.

Fun tune. Piano was a bit hot. Subscribed. Best Regards and Best Wishes!
Mainstream jazz is alive and well ... even if "you're no fun at all". 😉😉

To my ear, that first song cries out for a song lyric. Beautiful tune.
Thank you, we will see about lyrics!
Oh yeah!
I definitely saw some sweep picking! 🤘😆🤘
amazing phrasing!
It seams like you enjoy playing - looks glad and proud. Nice. And good looking too!
1st tune was based on Out of Nowhere. Great tune.
Would you any particular method books for learning jazz guitar?
I don't really have any in particular, I mostly learned from my teachers and from transcribing!
When I feel like I am struggling in the practice room, it is usually because I feel I am no longer progressing in terms of technique and improvisation. When this happens, I usually try to pick a tune I don't know from an album or a real book to learn, and then I don't feel so bad.
Great show Jocelyn. I am sure someone has already asked you this but what is your favourite amp? Given the choice
What amp and pick do you use? Just tuning in from Williamsburg Brooklyn
Out of Nowhere. The Star Trek theme song is also a contrafact of Out Of Nowhere.
Aw, good factoid!
Jocelyn, how and where did you learn to sing? I came to listen to your guitar playing, but I'm definitely sticking around for your voice!
Question. on a piece like The Kicker, do you play it the same way each time?
Question, when you go for a fast passage, do you know the notes, arpeggios or scales before you start?
That's a beautiful ride cymbal! What model is that, PLEASE!?🙄
Thank you! I'll have to ask Kevin!
Well it was in G and a bit Charlie parkerish. Reminded a bit like, " Out of Nowhere".
You got it!
Curious to know what are the pickups in the Benedetti please .
The tune was "Out Of Nowhere"
Heya. Anybody knows what pick she is using?
Out of Nowhere
You got it!
Need to make a thumb tshirt now and title it "If you know, you know"
😆
Bella/Linda 💘💘💘💘💘💘😮
Nobody holds thier pick the same.
After 55 yrs of playing both classical and jazz and I've never focused on the way that anybody holds their pick.
Whatever works for anyone!
Exc !!!
Would love to hear songs by Herbie Hancock or Wayne Shorter! Not enough guitarists doing that kind of material.
Love your playing! Why not name the teacher who inspired you so much?
Sounds like your new tune is based on the changes of “out of nowhere “
Absolutely. Really nice melody. I need to learn it.
Going to become a new standard!!!
For even a nicer fatter smoother tone I use the reverse side of the pick...the side opposite the pointy side. Might want to check it out for the hell of it. Plus, there is more pick area to grab the string. Very interesting stuff. I'm enjoying your channel.
Use semi round. Hard to find but a good compromise
You're No Fun at All , is that East of the Sun changes?
...or Out of Nowhere maybe?
Let it be said that you never went down a string gauge
Out of Nowhere re the contra fact.
Yep!
That's the most boring drumming ever ...Fiat Like pancake
🤟
