In today's video, I discuss why I'm NOT setting traditional New Year's resolutions (and what system of goal setting I'm using instead for 2024).

I use the week of my birthday for a reflection of where I am in my life and what direction I want to take for my next trip around the sun. I don't do resolutions, but I do decide in what general direction I want to head. Then month by month, I reevaluate. It is not a big process because I'm doing it throughout the year. It's working so far. I'm 72 and pretty darn happy with my life. I've accomplished a lot, and in retirement I can look at the everyday parts of life more closely.

I love that. My birthday is coming up, and I always take off days for my birthday (this year, it’s three!) I was wondering what I should do ( I can’t play video games and crochet the whole time….or can I? Lol) so, goals and reflection! Thanks for the idea and have a good day!

There is a new trend of not creating new goals in the New year but instead using the winter times for what it's intended. Finishing projects, centering, coming back to family and the quiet of the winter. That's what I am doing. I'll revisit Goal setting in the Spring! Best of luck on your new intentions!!

I journaled daily in college. I returned to journaling a bit last year, not daily but a few times a week. Now it's more like weekly or as needed. I like long journaling sessions that are kind of like a brain dump, writing for 30-60 minutes. I reflect back on the journaling I did in college for myself and believe it really helped me adjust to being on my own, getting out my thoughts, etc. I don't really have goals this year. I'm due with my first baby in May and my main goal is staying present in this pregnancy and enjoying this time and I have been. I've realized pregnancy has actually made me more present day to day and I'm loving watching my body change to grow this baby and I didn't know how I would initially feel with that.

I completly agree with the pregnancy. Im also going to have my first baby end of arpil early may and I just am not going to try too hard. Just enjoy my life and prep my home to have a little bubs.

I'm a huge goal setter. Something I've really leaned into the past few months is setting FUN goals. I found that lots of my bigger goals weren't getting done because I just wasn't excited about them. When I followed the fun, or found a way to MAKE things fun, I was re-energised and achieved WAY more. ✨

I've taken a slower approach to goal-setting this year, as I really want to spend more time being instead of doing. I was already leaning towards having a quarterly time frame for some of my goals so I think the 12-week format would work really well!

    I have 3 journals:
    - my bullet journal for planning and register,
    - a 5 year register journal were I enter the most important of the day, just few lines,
    - and a brain dumpster-divagation-doodling very untidy journal, where I:
    - process difficult stuff (like the illness of a family member),
    - enter thoughts about what I dream or remember about my dreams (and give them a conclusion),
-divagate about things like human rights,
-or about hypothetical choices like what would I prefer: eating pizza for the rest of my life or not being able to eat pizza ever again (and I like pizza very much),
-comment about what I thought about the last TED Talk I saw,
-what would be the theme for _my_ TED Talk if I ever had to do one,
In summary, whatever stuff, just to have the pleasure and the excuse to use my fountain pens in a wonderful notebook and 'clean' my brain.
I like it also because I do it without a screen, in a physical notebook, but it's ok to do it digital also. I just prefer it that way.
It's my own meditation style, as refular meditation doesn't work for me (I have obsesive thinking).
Journaling allows me to put out all that noise of my head and just forget about it. It's not to make anything productive, it's just to let it go out of my head.
It's super helpful for me specially during the most hard times at work when my brain ends the day kind of saturated with information and pending tasks and tasks done but that I'm still re-checking in my head... then I do this, I distract myself, clean my mind, stop the infinite voice in my head that keeps repeating stuff from the day and enjoy some free-writing.
    Hope this helps❤

You should check out the arts and craft section in the magazine department of your bookstores. They're really great as they tend to come with a mini project to craft with, and patterns and other ideas, especially from crochet books. Also literary magazines with short stories (my preferred genre is sci-fi/fantasy) are nice ways to support up and coming authors. Plus, there's a few digital only magazines out there like that if you're worried about extra clutter.
Let's hope we all have a fantastic 2024!

Happy New Year from super snowy Wisconsin! I have chosen a word a year for the last 10 years, so I typically use that as my guide. This year it's COZY and I am making every effort to allow myself time and relaxation, nature and beauty. I gave up specific goals a few years ago, but still work toward things that I want to achieve. My favorite for this year - every day I remove one saved item from my computer and one from my phone. I often do more than one, but on busy days having to remove only one is very low pressure. And I have one that I saved for you and your new crocheting hobby - I don't crochet but thought of you when I heard about this site, Craftably Ever After. Enjoy and have a lovely first 12 weeks!

The BEST video to start off 2024! Caitlin, thank you so much for sharing your feelings about goal setting and resolutions so authentically. I related so much to this video, from flip flopping between being “re-tired” and enthusiastic for 2024 to wanting to lean into journalling again this year after a hiatus. It’s so refreshing to feel like I’m not alone in this ☺️

I am a lifelong journaler - I write every day and I can't imagine life without it. I write to process information and sort out what I think and feel about things. It's a big part of day to day life for me.
I go back and forth on New Year's resolutions but there are goals that I've set for this year. I am embarking on a no-buy year - mostly because I have so much stuff and I want to use it before buying more (and also everything just keeps getting more expensive) but also because I want to save money for travel and just have a healthier approach to shopping. I've also started a strength training routine for the first time in years.
I like the idea of a 12 week year - breaking down that big thing into bite-sized chunks!

I’ve been journaling for the soul for almost 10 years and it’s been super great for working through hard moments and feelings in my life, like breakups, fear (especially of the future), or just going through a rough time. but it’s also been great for introspection and aligning with my intuition. I feel like giving yourself the opportunity to write without limits allows you to get to know yourself and trust yourself more, because you are taking the time to deeply understand your thoughts and feelings. That introspection has allowed me to find direction and purpose in my life, which has been helpful during major life changes and growing pains! 💖

I love this take on goals and resolutions! I’m one to set them for myself, but this year I went at 2024 too hard and too fast and I’m feeling burnt out and frustrated, which tells me I need to take time to reflect, I have eleven months, and my goals are just as valid in April as they are now ❤ I always love the fresh perspective you bring

I’ve been daily journaling since the start of december and it’s been soooo nice! I try to write at least one page, and sometimes I suddenly write up to 3 pages. It helps a lot to clear your mind and put your worries aside ❤

About goal-setting: I have 3 main goals each year, one work/finances related, one health and family related and one hobby related.
For example: master excel (from windows office, is similar to Numbers), get the rutine to workout 30' a day, and fulfill a sketchbook (a specific one already bought).
Each goal then has a monthly plan with smaller milestones (like sport mini-challenges with my mom or my husband that usually take 21 days, or entering a paddle mini-tournament, or challenge some friend to go running together...), each 15 days something has to be done related to each of the three goals. Because everybody can have a bad week but two bad weeks in a row are a sign of something bad happening.
Goals need to be re-checked quarterly also. Some goals loose meaning with news in my life and change during the year or need to be adjusted to new realities.
If a main goal gets done before the end of the year I add an 'optional' one, just to keep balance.
Never more than 3 at the same time as I loose focus easily.

I’m not rly setting goals right now. It’s rly dark and cold where I live rn. And I honestly just want to “hibernate” lol. I know I’ll be more motivated in the spring when it starts warming up, so I think I’ll start goal setting then.

The original bullet journal method, the one created by Ryder Carroll is precisely designed for reflection, self-evaluation, analyzing what our feeling, emotions, thoughts are at any given time, so that we can learn what is working in our lives and what is not. the problem is that it got out of hand and became this work of art and/or productivity so a lot of people got tired of it, but is not the bullet journal itself, it's more this 'ideal' bullet journal. Anyway, sorry for the departure. Back to the topic, I think is super important to allow ourselves the time and space to set goals, or not set them, when and how we feel is right. Sometimes these big moments, like New Year or the start of an academic cycle put too much pressure that could result in not appropriate goals for us or that we end up disliking them because of the stress that they brought. All the love from Chile!

I journal daily, mainly what’s happening in my life but also when I need to I vent and work out problems. I started WW in December but didn’t “start” until January. That was my resolution. A good magazine is Daphne’s Diary. There are no ads, there are recipes and stories and reviews of artists and places in Europe and little crafts to do each issue. Expensive but worth it. Happy New Year. I really enjoy your videos.

I stopped bullet journaling since last year and switched to notion, I do feel like I miss Bullet journaling but I am considering using my bujo for a reading journal.. things that I did do for planning and goals setting, is making 2 vision boards. One big one & one smaller one to make it easier to achieve my goals .. so far it is working well :)

In December 2023 I finished one "Five year journal" and this year I've started a new one. I wasn't used to writing every day, but this year there is so much to worry about, so journaling is the only thing that helps.

Happy New Year, Caitlin! 🥳 It's great that you're taking time determining how you want to grow in 2024 because I'm doing the same! December was so busy for me and I couldn't set my goals in time - it bummed me out for a while but then I realized that there's no need to put pressure on myself. Can't wait to see what the new year brings to us both! 😄

Happy New Year, Caitlin! I have also committed this year to journaling. I don’t wanna press myself to do it daily and then when I don’t do it, feel bad about it, so I will do it when I feel like and/or have five minutes to spare. Great video, as always! 🙏🏻❤ As for my goal setting, I just had to stop everything to attend a health problem and recover from it. At the beginning I felt bad about not knowing when or how I can figure out my goals, but priorities are important, and my health is priority number 1 for me now. I will figure out my goals when I can 🙏🏻🤷🏻‍♀️

I had been using the original bullet journal system for work & personal since about 2014. I decided to move to just a weekly planner this year and it’s not enough. I’m going to try both for a few weeks. I’m not very good at making written journal entries though - as in writing down thoughts & feelings. I discovered that it really helps me to make video “diaries” though; not to share but to just download my issues and sometimes watch to get an idea of where my head was at.

I think you two magazines that kind of give you little bits are Manta Wellness and Origins. They both come out by same company. They also have a food magazine and another I believe. They are hard to buy at stores. Only Whole Foods in my area has then. And I don’t go by that store like I used to. I did finally subscribe to Origins. They are quarterly magazines. You can check they out on their website. They have digital too if you like reading that way too.

Last year it took me a while to really get into the headspace of goal setting. Christmas was so busy and time just flew by. I was not ready for it yet. I probably didn't get there until sometime in February. This year I'm not super feeling it when it comes to resolutions per se, but I do have things I'd like to tackle and changes I want to make.

I was very unready for 2024 planning at New Year's, partly due to getting sick for the last 3 weeks of the year. Which is about how far behind I feel and how long I haven't journaled. So I'm thinking and very slowly getting a sense of where I want to go. I'd rather get there when I'm ready than rush something that won't actually work. So yeah, with you on that. Besides, New Yer's is an arbitrary date. Maybe the Luner New year will be the day it all comes together, or perhaps a random Tuesday.

For the first time in years (maybe ever?) I did not make grand pronouncements or Big Resolutions that put me on a path to overwhelm. If I had to sum it up, it's to just keep doing what I'm doing (exercising, cooking at home as much as I can, drawing and painting), and if I can add anything to that, then great!

I have a huge "Fear Stop" about journalling because of childhood trauma. I am worried if I die, someone will read it, I also feel like I am scared of what will come out on paper..... How does one just let go and write freely??? 😩

Setting a yearly goal never works for me . This year im setting myself monthly goals to make good habits,. This month is drink more water the following months walk more , read , learn BSL and eat more fruit and veg are some more examples. The idea being by the end of each month these will become habits and the end of the year i will be a better person for it . I would love to be able to journal just writing whats going on in my head but i end up staring at the blank page .
