  • In today's video, we go through and discuss the quest revolving around the imperial, Hirrus Clutumnus in the shivering isles dlc of the elder scrolls 4 oblivion. We begin in the district of Crucible in the city of New Sheoth. Here, we may run past Hirrus, a stranger to us, who beckons us over to have a chat. We do so and he tells us to meet him later near a statue of Sheogorath. Upon doing so, he tells us that he wants us to assist him in dying, as he is no longer long for this world. After we pick a method of helping him die, we are rewarded with his house key that has access to his jewelry box. Actually if you approach the Dark Seducer guard behind you after you push Hirrus off, she makes a remark how "it happends all the time and they should put a railing there"

    The "Happiness Ring" is kind of a metaphor for anti-depressants.

    Me as a kid: laughing at the way he ragdolls off the ledge
    Me now: realizing how relatable he is 😭
    Whoever wrote this quest was definitely going through some stuff

    I think something that sticks out with the shivering isles, and this quest in particular, is how good the voice acting is. The voice acting in the base game, while it has its charm, isn’t great. I love it but it’s sort of stilted and stodgy and unfocused, and the delivery tends to be fairly flat. You actually feel like this guy has emotions, and I think that’s why this quest stands out so much.
    I really love the shivering isles they honestly took what made oblivion great and refined it so well. Especially the voice acting is such an improvement, stuff like how Sheogorath sounds very jolly at the beginning of the quest line and gets more and more erratic and logical toward the end. Honestly great stuff

    • @ABardsBallad
      @ABardsBallad  29 днів тому

      That’s a really good point! I feel like the line delivery was spot on hear! And the shivering isles took all of the best parts of the game and put them into a dlc!

    With the "I'm sorry you're having a bad day" option being the first one the writers actually broke their rule of putting the most offensive dialogue options at the bottom instead on the top.
    I think in context it's even worse than the last one.
    Also if you talk to the guard after shoving the guy from the ledge she will give a snarky comment on the situation and that they really should put a fence there.

    • @ABardsBallad
      @ABardsBallad  29 днів тому +1

      That’s interesting I didn’t know about the dialogue options have an order to them! That’s really neat! I read that that’s what she would say too! Unfortunately her dialogue was either muted or glitched or something because unfortunately I didn’t get it out of her!

    I’m glad Bethesda portrayed his depression so well, without stigmatizing it. As a person who’s been diagnosed since he was 8, I know what it’s like. The tiredness, anger, and stress of it was written so well for such a short quest.

    I get the impression the quest was trying to say something substantial. Hirrus didn't like "not feeling like himself," something many neurodivergent people say while taking medication.
    But the ring was actually multifunctional and had substantial value. He just couldn't see it.
    The ring, like his life, had value.
    Life is worth living kids :') keep 'em coming.

    i wish you could have him as a follower cause either 1) he’ll be killed by some creature and get his wish or 2) if he’s not dying he’s having some sort of purpose.

      @@ABardsBallad probably because there's monsters everywhere and he can't really fight, even if he gets out he will get killed by the guard outside the gate.
      Btw you can help a NPC by freeing the spirits at the hill, but don't get a journal update

    People who are prescribed certain medications for depression will sometimes stop taking the medication. They commonly say, just like poor Hirrus with the ring, that they just don't feel like themselves. Of course, in reality it's a matter of dosage more often than not, and if you've been given medication for depression, it's better to talk to your doctor than it is to stop taking it altogether. Considerably easier to get a better mix than the chaos of the alternative... Not just for the people who inevitably actually _do_ care for you, but the means available to normal people for a game over could become your own personal hill you reeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaalllllyyy don't want to be trapped on. Surviving the attempt can go there.

    Damn, I never really thought of how depressing this quest is. The ring of happiness, the note and implied self harm. Even the 'suicide hill' can be interpreted as how some religions view suicide an offense worthy of hell. Im going to be 31 this year, ive attempted twice and have multiple mental health disorders. Im doing much better now, but my twenties were a mess of depression and addiction. I wish we couldve befriended Hirrus, or maybe saved him.
