41 (42) checkboxes in one city trial match. The ending is purely aesthetic for this upload; the 42nd checkbox will be for ending the match with all players off vehicles. Audio may be slightly off, but I was excited to share this. It took a long time to do this much!
120 checkbox estimation will be around 1 hour 30 minutes long. Maybe less, routing is mostly happening as I go. (update: check pinned comment for relevance to this)

Tool assisted speedruns always impress me but I've never seen something more insane than that meteor tornado grab
if you think that was wild watch the 120 star super mario 64 minecraft any% or portal any% tas. I spend a lot of times running and watching speedruns and i can tell you youll never forget those.

I wish Nintendo would remaster this game and give us online City Trial. Also insane job, I used to rarely come across maps where you would find more than 10 Top Speed stats, they were so rare sometimes.
The brilliance behind this, just amazing. Thank you for however many eternities you spent rewinding and retrying this, but it was absolute euphoria to watch. Thank you.

do you think having 4 controlled characters would increase the amount of boxes you can check off? I know that probably sounds like hell in regards to TASing, but I know that anyone can unlock stuff, not just P1.
Zyphis V Yes, that is the next part of the tas. 4P TAS controlled for 10 more 3 minute matches to hit 20 stadium events (and 10 star poles). Helps dramatically with distance, box and item checkboxes. And yes, it is hell to do lol

Kirby Air Ride would be amazing on the Switch.
The game just needs a control stick and a button, which pairs perfectly with the Switch's whole deal with the Joy-Cons being a simple 2-player option.
Now that I think about it, the menu design, fast-paced menu speeds, and short play sessions of the game seem almost like they were made for a portable system. 🤔
(It's really a no-brainer.
The only reason I can see them not bringing Kirby Air Ride to the Switch is because the people who make the particularly bad decisions at Nintendo think it would compete with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe or something, which, I mean, it would, but how many sales is that game getting these days?
A different first-party racing game series on the Switch would be amazing, both for players craving even a little variety, and for business.)

I mean city trial is rng every time, do you have a save file with this exact city trial on queue or did you manipulated the rng somehow? (like at the begining you pressed start and back many times which i think could be it.)
Savestates allow me to try every city and see if it's favorable to start with. I make a savestate after exiting the z menu, as the city changes every time the z menu is brought up

+Christian Padin Yes, I retried until I got the most optimal opening. The purpose is to clear all 120 checkboxes for city trial in as little time as possible, not necessarily one match

Just a quick question: someone had said that the program can manipulate RNG. At the beginning, was the resetting of that screen an attempt to cycle through to the best RNG? How does the program determine what the best RNG is?

Absolutely Not in this case, I manipulated the RNG by hand. Switching in and out of the Z menu at the start is the fastest way to change every rng aspect of the starting city, so after switching the menu 20+ times (while testing each city in between) I finally found a city with the best start for the most guaranteed way to get the most checkboxes
there's a program to look at rng seeds in memory addresses that works with dolphin. I will likely use this when I continue working on this project, but I'm not familiar with it yet, so all of the RNG manipulation in this tas was done through trial and error solely through observation (which is probably not efficient compared to rng addresses)

Can't figure out any other way to contact you so I'll just post this stuff here. You seem too far in to consider this stuff now, but maybe for next time or for later in the run:
1] Seems like you should have delayed most easy checks til the end of the run. This way, after using the free checks early, you can end input without having to wait through 40+ checkboxes or the credits.
2] Since you need to do either 7 (+3 starrods) or 11 matches (depending on whether you free check 'play 20 stadiums'), it seems like 3 minute matches would be the way to go. If a longer round is needed, it should be with 4 players for maximal time collecting items and breaking boxes for 3k/1k. If you can get 3k/1k in 7 3 minute matches (which looking at pickup rates doesn't seem that infeasible with 4 players), I imagine you would try to break the CPUs in the 3 super short star rod matches.
What you have so far was really entertaining. Bit worried about why you have so much idle time to stand around and not collect items, but you probably already have how much you need planned out.

As per your points:
1. I never considered that, lol. My mind was shrouded with attempting to be stylish and conforming to RTA timing, with the end time being getting the golden checkboxes. I'm not sure how much time that would save overall, as in how many boxes could I keep till last. Last match would then be 7 minutes and done after stadium check boxes. I can only think of location boxes, food, and star destroying though. This first part took a month on and off, even though a lot of it was rng testing, so that does suck lol.
2. Yes, my plans include another 7 minute match (switch to 4 players) because I don't think it's possible to get dragoon and Hydra in a 5 minute match. Maybe 6, but I also wanted to include 3 events in that match so that I can space out the remaining events (will be 4 pillar, 2 meteor) into 3 minute matches each with focus on boxes and items, and then have *probably* 2 more matches for 10 star rods, in which I'll focus on finishing up items and boxes but also distance. I want to manipulate the energy tank run amok event with at least 2 rocket stars, maybe more if I can control the rails that well. Lol. I am not sure if that plus energy tank item manipulation will be enough for 200 miles in those remaining matches, but I think striving for that is better than doing yet another match for 20 stadium events. It's still possible that one more 3 minute match to make it 11 would be faster than 15 target tests, otherwise I'm sure I can down kirby melee 1500 and destruction Derby 150.
My thought for 5 skips would be 2hour free run (22.5 min), 30 minute free run (5 min), target flight (5.5 min), 20 stadium (12 min), and maybe 200 miles (though if you do it on japanese this is 186 miles because of kilometers). TAS records for KM1/KM2 are > 400, so it should only take 3 or 4 KMs for the big check which is at most a few extra minutes. DD you can surely get 30 kills per with 4 players to do 150 pretty quickly.
As far as checkboxes for last, it actually wouldn't save much time depending on whether or not the credits are required. At the very least getting the credits at the end after the gold boxes would be aesthetically nice and save the quick restart sequence. But I think you need to press something at "Congratulations" to advance to them...its all arbitrary where the run actually ends I guess. As far as what checks you would delay I would have imagined stuff like 3 golf holes or 5 rings or a bust or two and all of high jump.
For Hydra and Dragoon: In RTA, we regularly get H&D in a 3 minute match. Their spawn rate seems higher in the short matches, so do not let them require an extra long match. If you are doing matches purely for star rod breaks, maybe you can slip meteors into those and then pause exit as soon as the meteors strike. But the only reason you would need star rod break matches are if you are skipping 20 stadiums, and I don't think you are since you got a Single Race in this video.

That changes everything, and will make it easy to have the rest of the events work out to 11 matches needed for 20 stadium, since I'll have restoration, tac, 5 pillar, 2 meteor to make 10 total and the last match to probably complete 200 miles (wish it was jp for 186, but I don't think I won't be able to hit it) and hit 20 stadium. If that last match takes too much time, which it shouldn't since it'll be less than 4 minutes total with loading times, then instead I could make my free checks 2 hour and 30 minute free run, target test, then 200 miles and 20 stadium. If I do do that last match, then instead I can replace Kirby melee, which would be an extra 2 minutes for 2 more 400+ runs to hit 1500, as well as something else. Maybe 1500 points in target test? Those 2 saves together might total up to more than another 3 minute city.
I like that idea for the ending. While it is arbitrary for now, that particular end would save my ass from losing time with the easy checkboxes lmao

If you have 4 people do target flight, one can hit 100, one can hit 50, one can hit 40, and one can hit 30 twice per play. Thats 440 points per play, so you would only need 4 target flights. Another thing to consider is ending DDs early....I could be wrong, but I thought 10 kills gives the checks immediately but you need to finish the entire thing for the kills to count towards your total. Could potentially end 3 of them early (after getting 50 KOs) which would could maybe even save 3 minutes. Need to test to see if I'm remembering that mechanic correctly though.
+RingRush I overlooked that target test lol, I do know that 4 players doesn't change running it 15 times, so that is still out. Thanks a ton for your help thus far, I think skipping dd 150 actually might be the way to go if it can save up to 3 minutes.

How did you arrive at your estimate of 1.5 hrs for the full run? Just curious. I assume you'll use three of the purple boxes on 10/30/120 mins of free run, but what about the other two?
thebigch33s3 Actually no, free run time can be cut in 4 due to the way player time works. With 4 players I can do the 10 minute time in 2.5 minutes (and accomplish switching vehicles in free ride in that time) and only have to box the 30 and 2 hour. This is because I can box some things that would take longer in events, such as running target test 15 times or Kirby melee 2-3 more times to get 1500 kos
The estimate is very rough. It's mostly a combination of the basic lengths of the cities (7 first and 3 minute ones next) and events together

We tried to punish him for it, but instead of taking the punishment he sued us, won the case, and left us all poor. We did get some of our money back from him but it took years.
*Blue Kirby:* Man, that's one fucked up motherfucker.
*Grandpa TAS:* He was, and that's why we isolate ourselves from him nowadays. He's even tried to kill his own family members and has been arrested 10 times to no avail.
*Red Kirby:* Honestly he sounds like the kind of guy who's sue happy if you dare punish him.
*Mom TAS:* We regret raising him - to be brutally honest.
*Yellow Kirby:* Now why is he at City Trial Island? Was he extradited to there or something?
*Mom TAS:* He did get extradited to there funnily enough. Apparently he'd done other crimes there he had to face charges for as well. Instead of taking the charges though, he instead went about killing every single Kirby on the island, even legal and government Kirby. It was then he took control of the island and has only allowed his friends as well as a special Kirby race to be there ever since.
*Sgt. Kirby:* That, and there have been numerous attempts to take the island back from him to no avail. If anyone comes near there and they aren't part of his special race or his friends, they're attacked and killed pretty much instantly. Looks like you three somehow managed to survive his attacks though.
*Red Kirby:* We did somehow find good places to be where he wouldn't murder us. I think I was attacked the most though seeing my wounds from cannon shots.
*Dr. Kirby:* Sgt, you may just have to advise that no one go there until further notice.
*Sgt. Kirby:* I've already done so.
*Dr. Kirby:* Right...
**TAS Kirby is eventually successfully taken off the island and executed. From there, the island can finally return to what it used to be. After a ton of work, it's eventually restored from TAS Kirby.**
*Dyna Blade:* Good to see his ass gone. Dude fucking hurt me, like quite literally.
*Pink Kirby:* Us too.

In theory if you got a battery powerup in the first few seconds could you make this faster?
I like your thought process. Unfortunately all that really helps with is the start-time related checkboxes (hit enemy in 10s, 10 items in 20). While it could lead to getting powerups faster, it pales in comparison to the castle hall event, so overall in the set time limit basically the same amount can be achieved. Where that does help is the 3 minute cities with all 4 players as TAS, so I greatly appreciate your suggestion :)
Jumping on the machine rather than simply walking up to it prevents patches from falling out like that.
Not in my experience, the patch fallout is based on its HP, if its notably reduced when you get on it for the first time it does that, jumping hasn't ever helped me with that issue

I implore you to do more of this, that was incredible. (Also, this was sub-optimal because HP was not maxed out, and not every breakable object was broken ;D )
Why weren't you able to get the legendary vehicles in this run?
Both legends will come in a later city. For some odd reason the way the pieces are distributed is determined at the start of the city and for an unknown interval between the start and the first box appearing. I still haven't figured it out, it's rather frustrating. Especially because if I start delving into a 4p match that I tested beforehand to have both legends appear, and after doing extensive inputs for a minute the pieces DON'T appear, then that would kill me lol. I'm trying to avoid that but I know if it happens I can try again in another city, there'll be 11 total
That is interesting. I have been playing the game for a very long time, and although I have never tested scientifically to any extent, I have thought about the problem and have never really come to any conclusions about the pattern that they appear in.
Do you know if having multiple controllers plugged in affects the RNG seed? Also, once you are finished, I hope you publish the TAS inputs, because I would be really interested in seeing this run improved by others over time.

I think is for the rng manipulation as you said, I dont see other reason why he did that.
Thanks! Yep I went through about 60 cities until I got one with an optimal start (has wheelie for compact kill wheelie, jet star for movement, hit CPU in 10 seconds, and 10 items in 20 seconds)
