      But if you know how pros do it, you can dissect their methods and use creativity to match your budget. Plus, if you're working towards bigger things (not everyone is, I get that, but for those who are) you have an idea of what to expect or look forward to.

    Thank you for the great info! I would love to work with Shane on set, I bet he is a great mentor! When it comes to green screen, what a lot of "UA-camrs" who give film advice about this kind of thing, seem to over look this small detail about the distance. I will have to implement that on our next studio shoot.

    The same principals apply even with cheap lights. It just takes a lot of work. I helped build a studio at a small university, where the budget only allowed for about $1,000 worth of lighting equipment. We used very cheap impact light fixtures with softboxes and hung them on a grid. It took time to get everything right, and the trouble spots eliminated, but if you apply the principles he's talking about, even to cheap equipment, it can be done.

    I was just wondering what would happen if you set up a 4x4 250 or 216 diffusion in front of both the 750 Open Faces? The 750's were anyway hotter than the Cineos, you had to dial down the camera from a 2.8 to a 4. Diffusing them would get them to spread more evenly and they'll cut around 0.6 to 1 T stop, and in theory that should really work. (The diffusions might encroach a bit and we'll not have much room to pan left or right, but if it works it works) Please reply, I'd really like to know. Not being able to hang the lights on the ceiling is a common problem in indie set ups, if there's a way the lights can stay on the floor and still work the way we want, that would be a life saver. So, please let me know. Also, Thank you so much! Great tutorial!

      From what I understood from this the best thing you can do is overhead lighting if you can to make the spread better but without a light panel or light that can flood evenly you will need more light sources to pull a perfect key

    a lot of comments here seem to be missing the point. He lit it beautifully with just 2 lights on the green. and then he did a very nice explanation on why he prefers the first option over using kinos in two different ways and hard lights, which are very common ways of lighting a green screen. Yes, he did use expensive grip gear, but he could've also done it with a very bare bones setup, ie just the two cineos on a couple combo stands.

    • @robertdouble559
      @robertdouble559 11 місяців тому

      Because Hollywood have money to burn in post and it's not their problem. Or more accurately, they've locked your company into a fixed price quote and they don't care that they're causing extra unbillable work for your company by quickly throwing up some crinkly green fabric and not lighting it properly. They know worst case your roto grunts will have to dal with it and your bosses have already agreed on the fixed price for the job and will take it on the chin because it's a race to the bottom with quoting. In any case, it's more expensive to hold up a massive Hollywood production day versus making a few post guys juiced up on Redbull work some overtime. Like, several orders of magnitude difference in price. I'm not saying this is a good thing, it's just how it is and how it will always be. Until all keying is just AI. In fact, all post and VFX will be AI. I fact all film production will be AI eventually. Traditional cinema production will be a quaint hobby in 20 years. Maybe less.

    • @tiaan_va
      @tiaan_va 4 роки тому +4

      Green screens do not have to be lit this perfectly. Chroma screens are very forgiving as long as it doesn't mix with the foreground. There are tons of post-production techniques one could use to even out the green even if the talent casts shadows on there. I mean if you look at the BTS for most big Hollywood productions where they build chroma sets and props you would see just how uneven most of those are lit. It's not always possible or ideal to light it all super perfectly and you can still extract awesome mattes. You will just have to actually experiment with various methods as well as post-production techniques.

    • @AndresArosemena
      @AndresArosemena 4 роки тому +1

      @@tiaan_va Well in those poorly lit or not perfect cases, the incredible sensor and uncompressed footage from their cameras is what helps A LOT. If you're shooting with a DSLR with a poor codec it's a different story

    You would work a lot faster if you had a reliable distance laser measuring device than having to tape measure out but assumed it was to make the production look better than just aiming the light from a point and getting a reading.

      Rent them dude. You don't have to own everything you use on a set. It's not great for cashflow. If you're doing jobs that need the absolute best in lighting, hire a gaffer, and a better DP than yourself. if you're not doing paid jobs, use what you can afford and fake it till you make it. You can still use these principals with crappy gear. Listen to the concepts, not the model numbers of the equipment. To be a good learner you need to able to take these concepts and think, oh yeah, I can see how trying some of these techniques with my crappy worklights from harbor freight might improve my skills. Be smart, not whiney. Shane actually used crappy harbor freight light fixtures for a lot of his tricks. A bunk of old incandescent bulbs screwed to a plank of wood, you can see one of those up in the rafters in this studio actually. Buy our self some led strips off ebay and stick them to a piece of coroplast to make a pretty damn good LED panel. Be resourceful.
