We’ve brought together two classic M3s, and they’re going up an M2 Competition! Mat’s sat in the E46, which will put down 340hp & 365Nm thanks to a 3.2-litre straight-six under the bonnet. As for the E36, its 3-litre straight-six engine helps push it to 300hp (thanks in part to some modifications cameraman Jack's added) and 320Nm.
As for the M2 Competition, well it’s clearly the most powerful competitor here, with a 3-litre straight-six twin-turbo 410hp & 550Nm! But what do you think - will the lighter E36 have what it takes? The E46 M3 still holds up well today. It's a drivers car and still puts a smile on my face every time I drive mine. I don't have to be the fastest car on the road, but I know that there is something special about owning one and being able to enjoy every moment behind the steering wheel.
It was impressive just how close it was between that E46 M3 and the M2 Competition. Yes there was still quite a big gap, but not that much.

I'm a massive E36 fan but I must say the E46 goes and sounds amazing.
They used a 3.0 286hp crank instead of having a 3.2 321hp. They s54 in the E46 M basically the same in power and sound of the 3.2 in the E36 M.

I'm always surprised folks never seem to review/test the E36 evo - 3.2L and a 6 speed with a bunch of other tweaks that would have put it a little closer to the 46. Still though, hella impressed with how well the 46 launches

@@kickdown7143 This isn't a US M3 e36. If nothing else you might notice which side of the car the driver is sitting in. The car also has some modifications and is faster than it was stock.
Of course if they dropped a more powerful engine in it it'd be faster. That's a pointless argument the same is true of any car.
I would have lost any race if i had to change gears with my left hand …

They were well ahead of the curve too. Nowadays cars are alot more easily matched. Your average Mustang GT or Camaro SS wouldn't be far off from an M4 but back in 2003 an M3 could blow the doors off a Mustang GT lol.

The induction sounds from 90s and 00s cars are some of the best. They give vehicles a lot more character than newer cars have.

Yeah, the older cars take it for sound, I was very disappointed when I bought a e39 528i to replace my old e34 535i, (thats the straight 6 version not the v8 they did later) it sounded absolutely amazing, made you want to boot it out of every junction and off every roundabout. Was bloody fast too! Would pull 105mph in 3rd!
My dad used to have the E46 soft top, awesome cars even to this day, and still look amazing too
Really surprised the E46 was quickest off the line and the M2 took so long to catch up with the torque advantage its got. E46 still the best
It would be down to its lack of torque in the lower RPMs. You can launch it well without it bogging, and then it all comes in with the revs! Beautiful engine the S54 is!
Personally, would love to see a drag race involving a TVR Sagaris...

I'm not too surprised that the e46 jumps the e36, I always find my e36 squirrels the rear end a bit, then hunkers down and launches.
E46 is easy to launch. Sod all torque lol. 13.1 is a very good time for one. 12.6 for the m2 is good bone stock. S55 can easily ads on 100bhp.

I've had several manual cars and the bmw was the only one that the shift knob use to pop off of or that I used to accidentally put it into 5th instead of 3rd gear. So after you said you're not the biggest fan of bmw gearboxes, I guess I realized they aren't my favorite, either.

sam thoughts here, I saw E36 M3 I clicked then I see its an old 3.0...3.2L with 3.64 diff does 0-200 same as E46 M3 and its fater above 200, 13.8 was good from this 3.0 but its 3.15 diff is too long for 400m drag.

Everyone can agree it's one of the best M3 cars of all time. I think this E46 generation is by far one of the best, and is definitely my favourite iteration of the BMW 3 series and their M3 cars.
@@TonyKimtheamusementparkfan Hmm, not quite everyone. I saved up for one, and found an immaculate one at a BMW dealer, but declined it after the test drive. Sure, the engine sound was incredible, the diff magic, and of course it looks really nice. However, when driving normally it felt like any other E46 to me, and the throttle pedal had an annoying lag at the top of it. Not for me.

Cracking cars sold mine in April after doing 41k miles in it and bought a race beetle but the race beetle is better , old school Carrera 2 as well

The E46 M3 is probably the greatest car BMW has ever made, but I also love the M4 F82 and the M3 E36.
The E39 is also regarded as the best M5 ever made. What a fantastic generation it was for BMW!
