  • Bernard's interview (no performances) from his Songbook session. He discusses New Order, Electronic, and his upcoming project (Bad Lieutenant), and gives Jake Evans' a special shoutout at the end. Great interview! Tracks played were LWTUA, Bizarre Love Triangle, Getting Away With It, and Sink Or Swim. (I might put these in a separate upload)

I have followed Bernard Sumner since I was 10 years old and I think that I went to each of the concerts in ARGENTINA. It's good that his voice didn't change and that he looks really good, a great and living legend of music, simply the best from JOY DIVISION, NEW ORDER and ELECTRONIC

When Bernard talks about the first time after coming back from the US to a studio and there just happened to be a synthesizer and a drum machine lying out...made me think of a child in a sweet shop given what we know about Bernard's passion for this type of music.

I know that Barny is a stream of conscious lyricist, but his words still have an amazing and magical story anyway. "Tonight I think I'll walk alone, I'll find my soul as I go home" has an incredible impact for anyone who is socially marginalized or an outlier.

Take my hat off to Bernard because I’ve listened to the music he’s written for a long time and I’ve been to see New Order many times.
He’s had great ideas and you get two styles of music from them

a flippin` cool, honest, and amazingly talented guy is Bernard. Good interview. Twiddling a pen doesn`t make you look smarter though.

The decision to not play Joy Division songs after Ian's death was a very brave one. It was indisputably the right decision. Bernie tried to do Ian's low voice in the beginning, which was a mistake, but he eventually found his own voice.
If we look at The Doors as an inverse example, they ended up doing gigs with some singer who would even dress and shape his appearance like Jim Morrison. It was a shambolic display, obviously done for financial reasons. Something which Jim Morrison would've been disgusted by, to say the least.
So, great respect to New Order for having the courage to start again, and in a sense, protect, seal and respect Ian Curtis' legacy.

Never ever get fed up of listening to Bernard. Love his Salford accent and his voice. He's got a great dry sense of humour.

I filmed that first gig at HURRAH and have just finished my own take on the concert. I was supposed to be the opening entertainment for the cancelled JOY DIVISION gig and was friends with Ruth Polsky. This is my first time hearing Bernard speak and his anecdotes about their early experiments with electronics is really exciting to hear about. As my experience with them was pre-synth, that explains to me the genisis of their BLUE MONDAY phase. The interview gives me a feeling of watching a Kubric's 2001.

They say that Joy Division (early iterations, Stiff Kittens, Warsaw,) was born the night Bernard Sumner and Peter Hook attended a Sex Pistols live gig in 1976. It must have made a lasting impression on Bernard Sumner. I'm sure that if he cut his hair and made it spiky with a touch of red coloring, threw in a tartan kilt, a few safety pins along with a bit of British dental hell, he would be a dead ringer for Johnny Rotten.
All kidding aside, what a great career he's had. It's too bad that things went so sour in New Order, but at least I got to see them live at the Forum in LA in the 80's when they toured with the Cure. I loved the first Electronic album and the Bad Lieutenant band had a few good songs as well in IMHO. Hard to believe it's been nearly 15 years since this video was made. He's seems a well spoken and thoughtful man. I really liked his musings on lyric writing.
