Naked Bible Podcast 218 - Authorship and Date of the Book of Job

- Many Christians believe the book of Job is the earliest book of the Bible, written sometime before Moses in the patriarchal era. Few Old Testament scholars assign any merit to this idea. Why the disagreement? Is there any basis for thinking Job is earlier than the time of Moses? Is there any way to know when Job was written and who might have written it? Does any point of biblical history or theology depend on the answer? We discuss all these issues in this episode of the podcast.

This subject was posed to me on Friday. Once again thank you for the raw material and resources you provide.👊✌
"Patriarchal stories" may have been well known to many people, not just Moses, before being written down. For all we know, Moses learned many things during his time with Jethro's tribe. That's why I wouldn't say the stories of ancient times were unknown before Moses wrote them into the Torah. So it absolutely could be sound reasoning to place this before Moses. Don't agree at all that that point invalidates the early date for Job.
I know your comment is old so I'm writing it for future readers.
I don't think Michael is saying Job is not Patriarchal. Only that the arguments for it being patriarchal doesn't stand up.
I'm only halfway through the video, but I think his overall point so far is that we do not know how old it is. So it could be patriarchal, but we don't know
Sounds like Job is an ancient literary masterpiece written by a highly educated ancient person who knew how to include words from various cultures of the middle east. As a person with an English Lit degree, I find this podcast highly satisfying to listen to.
Please consult on this subject with Dr. Hugh Ross. Thanks. You will be glad you did because he has resources that specify that the book of Job was written between 400 and 600 years before Genesis.
So when was the last behemoth on the earth you could at least put the book back to that time.

conjecture: the book of Job is ancient but was edited over time. maybe?
Possible. The truth is we never know unless we uncover something in the Middle East
I recently learned that some skeptics claim that the book of Job borrowed from a couple earlier works. Like the babylonian story Ludlul-bel-Nimiqi? Just curious your thoughts on that and how we should defend our beliefs as chrisitans in regards to matters like this?
What needs defended? Biblical authors borrowed motifs from neighbors all the time. Yahweh riding on clouds borrows Caananite imagery used for Baal for example. What is most important is the point the author is making in comparison.
I would love if Job wasn't actually true but a story to convey truth.
