@@AmbientEndeavors It reinforces that swapping the Ten 30 is a great idea. 🤣 I actually was leaning toward the ET10, but I'm a little surprised at how boxy it sounds compared to the other two IMO. I was inbetween the WGS ET10 and the Jupiter 10SC, but the Green Beret was my favorite of these, so that may have to be the one to consider against the Jupiter.
Totally! I honestly agree. I think the Green Beret and ET10 brought some cool textures, specifically in the dirty tones, but I was impressed with the pairing of the stock speaker. Turns out it was well-matched to this amp.
Speaker comparisons are tough with new speakers as each will change tone as they break in with playing. All new speakers sound crisp and trebly until their surrounds soften up with use.
What a difference! Of the WGS speakers I preferred the Green Beret, but really liked the Celestion a lot as well, between those two it's very close for me.
That's kind of where I arrived too, to be honest. I'm leaning Green Beret after the whole experiment, mainly because I like the driven tones a bit better. More full/rich breakup. And the cleans are close, but there is a nice texture to the GB that adds something interesting to both clean and dirty.
G10A all the way!! Actually, after I listened to the comparison few times have to say that my favorites on the clean are the celestion and the g10a followed by the green and et10 last. Overdriven green first, then g10a, then et10 and celestion last. Thinking about possibilities setting the eq to each speaker to taste, I would probably take the green because I liked the character of the low end and I believe you can dial the bass knob higher and get more punchy low end without been flabby (cleans would’ve sound better to me with bass knob higher than where it was), the mids were the most beautiful to my taste and the top end is sweet. Thinking about proper speaker to match the amp I would take the g10a. The celestion sounds very good but the low end felt kind of too loose to my liking on the overdriven sound. I guess that the et10 can sound way better with the amp eq different (more bass, more treble).
all really good observations! The G10A feels polarizing to me, and it's the most unique to my ears. It has a bit of that honky vintage Fender feel (that likely suits these old amps well, but that I personally don't love). The GB was the one for me, mainly because I liked the way it broke up the best, and it retained a good amount of the sparkle/clarity in the cleans as well. You're right, a lot of it can be affected by some EQ knob turns too. Thanks for watching!
Each speaker was drastically different to my ears. I liked the stock speaker the best.. but with that said the WGS speakers sound new/stiff/unbroken-in.. I think all the speakers will sound even better once their very nicely broken in and smooth out a bit… Also, I wonder how different combinations of those speakers would sound in a 2x12 cab?
Both great points. The stock speaker does have a good 10+ hr head start, and I agree it holds its own! I committed to the green beret and might have to do a follow up after I’ve broken it in a bit more.
Thanks for great presentation of 4 excellent speakers. I would have enjoyed hearing some single coil pickups too. The stock speaker fits that box very tastefully but if I was to change the speaker for that specific amp GB or GA without question. Thanks for sharing.
Great video. Your playing is wonderful. To my ears the AlNiCo speaker sounds more musical and exciting than the two WGS ceramics. The tone is sweeter and your playing sounded more dynamic, almost like a blanket had been taken off the amp. By far my favorite. The stock Celestion sounded pretty good to me, and I like it better than the two WGS ceramics. Maybe not surprisingly I put a WGS AlNiCo 8" in my 64 Vibro Champ and it sounds superb.
Thanks! Yeah the alnico was so distinct when I popped that in. Definitely more airy top end as you kind of described. I did like the breakup of the Green Beret but the stock Cele sounded sweet across most of the gain sweep.
The metal cage is fitted for the amp to be compliant with CE and UKCA. Hot tubes are classified as a hazard also, direct access to the tube sockets, if amp is on, is also a hazard with the user potentially being exposed to lethal high voltage. That is why nearly all amp manufacturers are having to provide some physical protection around tubes now.
For me, finally this Celestion latching very well with the Fender ! i have a hand made vibro champ with a Jensen P10R but curious to test with the Celestion !
I've been saying for years that the two biggest upgrades you can make are pickups and speakers. No need to change guitar or amp (necessarily). They are also the least expensive changes to get the tone you're after...
It certainly is an oft overlooked modification. There’s a lot of variation that comes from a speaker swap in terms of freq response, headroom/breakup, etc
And yet there're still people who believe a speaker is a speaker is a speaker. When we were kids we'd find the rattiest stereo speakers we could find at the pawn shop down the street and put them in our ratty old amps, just to see what it would take to blow one out, lol. Got a lot of great tones out of a few of them before they died. Great comparisons!
Lovely! Thanks for the comparison. I modded my VCR to run a 5881 at 8ohm 10watts with bigger output transformer and in my quest for the right 10” 8ohm speaker I ended up back and happy with an 8ohm Ten 30. I dig the sound of that green beret though, might have to give that a go at some point.
Very cool! I’ll have to look into that mod. I arrived at the green beret because I slightly preferred its breakup sounds, but the stock speaker sure holds its own!
Totally agree! That's really the cross-over point for these little Champs - great cleans up to about 5, and then a bit past that and you can dig in and get great small-amp breakup!
Ive ALMOST changed out my Ten 30s on my 68' Vibrolux RI, many times.......but that sweet rolled off top end works well w my amp, if I need more chime, the bright switch does the trick, but if my amp didnt have that switch, Id go the Green Beret for the greenback sound or the G10a, nice and fuzzy.
Totally, I was kind of amazed at how the stock speaker stood up. I actually filmed all the WGS stuff before popping the original back in and man it is a good fit. I think I slightly prefer the breakup of the Green Beret, so it stayed in. That G10a rest gives a unique vibe. Thanks for watching!
In order of preference (clean and dirty): Green Beret, Stock Speaker, Alnico, ET10. Good demo but gotta turn down that reverb when you're cranking the amp!
Great comparison. Green Beret sounded very pleasant overdriven. For cleans, I preferred the celestion. By the way, I am in the middle of a search for speaker replacement for my JC40. It's too harsh with fuzz and certain overdrive, especially for single coil pickups. After talking with WGS support they recommended G10C/S. Have you had experience with that? Also, since my amp has two speakers I am wondering what if I were to mix green beret with Celestion. Any thoughts?
Great comparison. I was thinking of experimenting and switching out the stock speaker, but I actually think it sounds the best. The other speakers seem to lack that punch and clarity. The 10 30 sounds great here.
Hmm, if you want a Vox go with the ET10 or G10A. If you really feel the need to swap, then I'd go with the Green Beret. Personally, stock is best flavor. Kudos to fender for speaker selection!
All the WGS speakers sounded like they needed a few hours of playing to loosen up the surrounds and spiders. I've learned never to judge a speaker until it's at least partly broken in so it can reveal its true voice. With that said, the G10A really tickled my ears. Its detail and depth out of the box hinted that it would sound amazing once it had broken in. Nice playing, BTW!
hey thanks ! yours and other comments make me want to circle back to each speaker and break em in a bit. I'm running the Green Beret at the moment and it's continuing to mellow out as I play it more.

great question.
