Guitar: FCS ‘63 Tele - bridge PU/Twisted Tele.
Amp: ‘67 Fender Princeton. All knobs at 5, reverb and tremolo off.
Mic: SM57 an inch off the grill, straight on where the cone meets the dust cap of each speaker.
Signal path: BAE 1073 into Apollo x8p, into Logic Pro X. I put some gain on the stereo bus to get the overall level up, but did not level match each track individually. The varying levels you hear are the speakers.
    The Ceramics:
    Jensen C10R - 25 Watt
    www.jensentone.com/vintage-ce...
This speaker sounds like what I imagine the stock, vintage speaker may have sounded like when it was new. Trashy, bright and bouncy.
    Jupiter 10SC - 25 Watt
    jupitercondenser.com/product/...
The price and looks of this speaker are fantastic. The tone to me however is like a less interesting C10R. I could see people liking it who like the sound of the C10R but want less sizzle.
Oxford 10J4 (The stock, vintage speaker)
    fenderguru.com/amps/princeton-...
Very bright and lacking in lows. I can also hear chatter coming off the cone or dust cap, which is magnified when you record it.
    Warehouse Veteran 10 - 20 Watt
    wgsusa.com/vet10
Overall smoother, warmer and more refined than the C10R. I could see this speaker being popular with people who want a more balanced tone than the C10R.
    Eminence GA10-SC64 - 20 Watt
    www.eminence.com/speakers/spe...
This speaker has more pronounced mids than the other ceramics here, which translates as being livelier, and more exciting. I could see this speaker being popular in this amp with people generally looking for more mids.
    Weber 10F150 - 25 Watt
    www.tedweber.com/10f150
Noticeably louder than many of the other ceramics tested. I estimate it errors on the side of sounding a bit modern. If you are one of those wishing for a more muscle from the amp via a speaker, this might be a good speaker to consider.
    Celestion G10 Greenback - 30 Watt
    celestion.com/product/31/g10_...
The build is top notch. It’s balanced, but lacks the chime associated with this amp. For that reason, it’s one that I would classify as not right for this particular amp.
    Celestion G10 Creamback - 45 Watt
    celestion.com/product/217/G10...
The build quality is superb. To me it has more clarity than the G10 Greenback, and also provides some of the chime back. I could see this speaker being a favorite.
    THE ALNICOS:
    Celestion G10 Gold - 40 Watt
    celestion.com/product/7/celes...
This speaker is lovely and the build is top shelf. It really dresses notes up. It’s a tidier sound than any other speaker here. It’s an arguably more expensive sound. I’m not sure it’s the right match however for this particular amp. I would argue it’s too classy sounding. I’ve seen people ask and have been asked myself if this speaker fits into a Princeton, and the answer is yes it does.
    Jensen P10R - 25 Watt
    www.jensentone.com/vintage-al...
I’ve heard this speaker in many Fender amps so it’s tone was immediately recognizable. I found it open sounding, not compressing like the C10R. I could understand many feeling this is a the perfect upgrade as it’s got recognizable Fender tone, and offers a more complex sound than the C10R. Fender included this speaker in their recently released Hand-Wired ’64 Princeton reissue.
Weber Blue Pup - 20 Watt
    www.tedweber.com/blue10a
Like a Princeton had a baby with an AC15. It has that cool chime. I found it a bit looser in the lows than what works for me typically. I might use this speaker in the amp when I want to create a Vox sound while recording. All this said, this speaker is a complete departure from the original speaker or the C10R unless you only focus on the fact that all have a lot of chime.
Weber Silver Ten - 20 Watt
    www.tedweber.com/slvr10a
It sounds and reacts like a vintage speaker. It’s warm, yet still has chime. It compresses and sags. It’s loose in the lows, but in a vintage, worn in kind of way that sounds and feels very authentic. Playing it felt like what I would expect from a vintage Fender Tweed Deluxe. I liked it so much that I also ordered a 30 watt model to see if that would tighten up the lows a shade.

    I’m a Jensen guy…
I have a P12Q from 1955 in my ‘65 Princeton, and I’ve come to the conclusion that it is as important to the final sound as any other component. It’s simply the best sound I’ve heard, and the treble is easy to dial out, but impossible to dial in, so in short…
    Vintage 12” Jensen = Magic.

I also play a Fender Super Sonic head through a 44 pine cab loaded with 2 Jensen P10R, a P12R, and a C12R. I also Play a 1967 Fender Bassman AB165 through a single pine cab loaded with a 50watt Jensen C12N. Jensen are the best in my opinion @@frankstephenson1746

Oxfords are underrated. I think that's because the alnico CTS and Jensens are thought of as the speakers to have in a Blackface Fender and people refuse to accept anything else. The Oxfords are probably less efficient so you can get some breakup at a lower volume and they do sound good.

    • @joseceraia
      @joseceraia 3 роки тому +1

@@5000rgb Early Fenders had often Alnico Jensens. Alnicos are LESS efficient compared to ceramic speakers. Most Alnicos are 95dB/ 1meter/ one watt, there were ceramics are nearly all 97 db or higher. Note : 3 db is double Sound Pressure Level ( SPL ) !!!!!!!!

By far one of the best speaker comparision video in UA-cam, congratulations! I also agree with the thoughts in the description except for the Blue Pup, which I think sounds surprisingly thin (I listened with a professional earphone). It’s a shame that some speakers like Weber 12A125, 12A150 or WGS G12C and G12C/S were missed, but obviously not everything can be presented unfortunately .

Great demo. Thanks for the comparisons. 1) There was a huge difference in listening to this video on my phone, vs bluetooth earbuds, vs good studio monitors. Listening to various speakers through various speakers is a bit ironic. 2) What I like as an independent guitar sound may not serve well in a house mix. In one of his videos, Tom Bukovac talked about sound checking with Joe Walsh. He thought Joe's rig was completely shrill and ice-pick sounding, while his own rig was warm and full. When it came to the sound in the house, Tom's sound was completely buried, while Joe's tone sounded great.

I really like the Jensen C10R & P10R speakers. These speakers really get that classic Fender clean tone. I have a VHT Special 6 Ultra. The stock speaker made the amp sound like it had several blankets over the speaker. I put a Jensen C12R in the amp and not I get really great clean tones. The least good tones, in my opinion, were from the Celestion speakers.

The Jupiter sounds very open. I like it. It stands out and is most different. Of course the original Oxford is the most open but is overdriving so easily. There are people who can fix vintage speakers without reconning them. I have always liked the Jensen P10 R and it maybe my favorite here along with the Jupiter. I'd have to play them in person. The C10R sounds pretty good too.

Great demo! Wow...tough choice? The “British” voiced ones definitely smoothed out the tone, and the Alnico ones had great Top end. The American voiced ones had a jangle and presence that was missing in the British. Some had quite a bit of speaker breakup. There were at least 5 standout matches in there?
You can really see how much speaker choice effects the voice of the amp.
I have a 5e3 clone that came with a 15watt 12” Celestion Blue...nice chime, but too much breakup? The 5e3 has so much going on in the Midrange, and can get very loose? That can be really cool, but makes the amp more of a one trick pony.
I ended up with a 50 watt Jupiter 12LC, which makes the amp much more versatile. I like the Tone better so far.

Great test, thanks. I'm about to pull the trigger on a 65RI (10"). I preferred the Creamback(CB) and P10R. They weren't the same but both produced a bit less twang than the current stock Jensen. The P10R had more Fender tone and the CB was more Brit but -to me- retained enough of the Princeton character. The Gold sounded good but went too far Brit, which is not what I'm getting a Princeton for. The Gold certainly works well for many others based on numerous forum comments.

I traded off my '68 with the stock Jensen, because a Deluxe Reverb worked better for me. That has the Orange Pumpkin JBL in it.
That is no longer a one arm amp for me.

I do like the twisted Tele neck.

I really liked the silver ten in this application.. Sounds the shiz. Good definition and some flabbiness there when you want I would imagine. I'd dime the amp and push it into collapse...this speaker would make that sound even more awesome.

Fantastic demo!!!! Tells all we need to know.
Most often a proper re-cone will sound more like the speaker did when it was new... of course not like it sounds after years of abuse and degradation. In the hi-fi industry this is done all the time.. Very often we do have original examples that are not shagged to bits, so can compare new recone to near new old.. Don't just install any old cone that 'fits'.. choose one like the original.. it will sound different than your broken driver, heck yes.... it will sound like it did when new.

Nowadays recone "kits" are readily available for most old school guitar speakers.

Lot of good info hear guys. Just a few more things to say.
I have 4 speakers for the PRRI
Jensen C10r - Very scooped in the mids, just way too bright for me. It is Fendery but it still doesn't have the magic of the old Jensens Very loose in the bass. Too loose. I do 'think' the P10r would be the better of the two as I have played others with this speaker but not in mine.
Weber 10f150t - Love / Hate relationship with this one! First , it's a VERY LOUD speaker. And as stated very heavy in low mids once you start pushing some volume. The love part - It does have nice articulate highs and a very controlled low bass. And the depth of this speaker is unmatched with effects, delays, reverbs, phasers, etc. Nice string separation too. Did I say it's loud....I think the 10f125 would be a much better match for the PRRI. wouldn't be as boomy in the low mids
WGS G10c - I'd say it's closer to the Weber than the C10r. Much more musical sounding than the 10f150t, you may say more pleasant sounding. Not as loud as the Weber. Still gets that low mids push when the volume goes up. Not quite as much string separation as the Weber. Depth is good but not as good as the Weber. Large magnet also controls the bass here too.
Emi 1028K - Alnico - very different from the others, being alnico you can push the volume a lot more as it compresses. Very little depth when compared to the others and has a high mid character that can become fatigue-ing after a while. Rounder sound, not as bright as the others. Still very usable, I'd take it over the C10r. Good classic rock speaker in the vein of Bob Seger and similar as it has a nice grit once you start pushing it.

Either Jensen sounds more like Fender, but I like the compression and roundness on the Gold. It is probably the most expensive speaker. You mentioned they were louder, so maybe my ears were tricked due to the increase in volume. The Jensen reissues are nice speakers and the most reasonably priced. Nice vid, well done. Thank you.

Thanks man! The Gold is a great speaker, but sounds a bit classy for me in this amp.

This video feeds perfectly my mental illness about speakers.... great comparison. I like the p10r or c10r stock on princeton, but also i liked the blue weber. Greenback suonds too "brit" for a princeton.

Fender installs the Jensen C10R at the factory...it's got the classic "Fender Sound" IMO.
    But,
I really liked the Green Back...a bit warmer with a smoother high end :)

Not for the hand-wired ‘64 though - that’s loaded with the P10R. The thing is they all need wearing-in! That P10R sounds pretty authentic given some time. I guess that’s why they chose it for their most expensive and authentic build.

We can assume that the vintage Oxford may be the only one here that was connected via a soldered connection.
It does sound like there's some coil rub on that Oxford btw... those usually have plenty of bass, but here it sounds as if someone's hand is resting on the cone or there's some enamel on the former coming lose and causing rub (you can hear it in the highs, doesn't sound like a good Oxford).

That Oxford sound beautiful! Love it! Sound it’s gonna blow up anytime, remind me my Oxfords on my 66 pro reverb, is kindy what’s the Princeton is know for, loose, ratty, raspy overdrive that falls apart when fully crank, all the other speakers sound stiff, dull and modern, except the weber alnicos, just the Jensen P10R and C10R make the cut, glad I watched your video as I was tempted to put an Alessandro on my Princeton but sound more constricted and dull than a veteran, keeping my Oxford on my 69 princeton that also might need a recone at some point but now sound very similar to yours, cone scream land 😂

I just got a stock 65 Princeton RI, which FYI comes with the Jensen C10R, when I tried it at home sounded way to spikey and scooped. The 64 Handwired version comes with the Jensen P10R, which supposedly has more mids and a smoother top end. I’m just about to put it in and try it...A lot of times I find I end up liking the stock speakers in the end, but we’ll see🤷🏻‍♂️😂

    • @mydeadletteroffice
      @mydeadletteroffice  3 роки тому +1

There are other considerable differences between the hand-wired and normal RI, but the speaker does make a whole lot of difference. I find the P10R to have a different tone in the mids and more character overall. It's also much louder to my ear. If you still feel the amp is too spikey for you, Celestions are common remedies for those people. Of those I would suggest the Creamback. Good luck!

@@mydeadletteroffice Thanks, yeah I’ve been doing a lot of research on it. I actually really like the stock speaker in my Deluxe RI so I like the Jensen sound, I’m thinking the P10R is gonna do the trick, gonna see today I believe
