Roy you're already head and shoulders above most analysts in the game simply because you're willing to say you're wrong at times, fantastic video and really good analysis, I'll certainly be watching more.
Super lucky to have you breaking this stuff down as someone who's literally been directly in his shoes. Thought this video was awesome. Think on the Rockets ones, they're running Stack/Spain PnRs, think what I'd like to see them do is just guard-to-guard switch those and let Edey handle the big (so on the second one for instance, Pippen switches from FVV to Green, Konchar switches from Green to FVV, Edey stays home on Sengun). Obviously requires super communication though. Both Edey and the guard popping behind the initial screen have to be talking and letting each other and the man guarding in the initial on-ball what's going on. Easier said than done, but I think that'd be the best strategy to employ?
Roy-- thanks for the nice analysis. One of the reasons Zach's game has translated is that he has continued to improve. He has gotten demonstrably better each year at PU and now in the few months before the NBA season. Congratulations to him; it is great when hard work pays off.
Purdue & Pacer fan here, so really enjoyed this. You can see how hard Zach plays and works on his game. Roy, I am wondering if you’ve ever met or spoken to Brandon Brantley? I think he deserves quite a bit of credit for how quickly Zach developed as a basketball player and why Purdue is now Big Man U. Would like to see you talk with him at some point if you haven’t already.
Some people were saying he would end up in China next year even before he fouled out his debut in 15 mins.....way to harsh way to soon and I beleve Zach will be a solid starter in the league 🔥
@@DIXIE-DEAN Edey versus the Blazers: 24 minutes game high 6 turnovers game high 4 personal fouls also game high 4 steals. It's like he forgot how to play over the summer. He put up Shaq-like numbers in college. He's putting Shaqtin' a Fool numbers in the NBA.
Really enjoyed this video, I haven't seen you since your Pacers days! Edey has a high basketball IQ even though he hasn't played terrible long. I'm happy to see him succeed in the NBA!
Awesome to see you doing this Roy! Keep it up! You always get mentioned as one of our favorite players in our fantasy bball chats. We love to talk about all the great big men who HIT THE GLASS! Brandon Bass, Kris Humphries, The Manimal, ZBo and ofc you. Cool to see you out here on UA-cam!!!
Great analysis. Please do more analysis of Zach Edey for example every 10 games or so if you can. Thank you. I am a new subscriber. You deserve way more subs.
Really nice breakdown. "How will Edey handle the NBA?" has been a question mark for three years now. He's doing well and as you pointed out there are several clear ways to improve.
I literally just discovered that Roy Hibbert has a YT channel and I subscribed immediately. I love it when former players talk about basketball and share it with the masses.
8:25 Spain Pick and Roll. Requires Bane (#22) To call it out, and have Edey drop below Van Vleet and Bane step up, or Bane can attempt to blow up the screen Van Vleet is setting on Edey. Regardless, it requires communication from Bane to make the decision here.
Rasheed Wallace suggested he should have been the #1 pick in the draft; Gilbert Arenas claimed Edey was basically going to be a bust - benchwarmer. Roy Hibbert sounds like he was in between before the draft -- but now agreeing more with Rasheed's viewpoint. He looks like Yao Ming II without the same shooting skills -- at least so far. Edey has only been playing basketball for a few years -- he was a hockey player in Canada growing up. His shot looks good and he'll gain more confidence shooting the occasional jumper -- even from 3. If he stays healthy, he should have a great career. Smart pick by the Grizzlies.
Definitely do more breakdowns of Edey as the season progresses. As of right now they appear to be testing using him off the bench (unless they mixed it up since Ja was out).
as a purdue fan, it’s hard to not come across as biased, but i’ve been singing edey’s praises as a basketball fan first and foremost since he arrived at purdue. i’ve watched nearly every game he played in college and got to witness the growth firsthand. the guy is a legitimate talent. people are worried about the perimeter stuff, but he’s a 7’4 300 pound tank that can handle solid minutes and get up and down the floor. he’s not a classic “stiff”. sure he’s not a new age demigod, but he’ll be at minimum a double double guy for years to come. who knows what his ceiling actually is? hard to believe people didn’t trust the eye test until they saw him on an NBA court.
Impressive men can admit when they were wrong, because they're not insecure. I love your analysis here. Many of your competitors in this space keep trying to justify their early dismissals of Edey by acting like he should be scoring 3 points and 2 rebounds per minute of playing time. His stats on pretty low minutes has been very solid, and he's a great teammate for the studs he's playing with. Ja and Bane and Edey are going to be a force, throw in JJ and all the other great contributors and the Grizzlies, if they stay healthy, are poised for a deep deep playoff run. Great video!!
8:30 This is a Spain pick and roll, which is quickly growing in popularity. Easiest way to guard it would be to straight switch all these screens, but that creates mismatches. At the very least, you could switch the back screen, and the back screener's defender would replace Edey as the "drop" coverage. At least this way Edey doesn't switch onto the ball. Thanks for the great breakdown!!! 🔥🔥
I love these defensive breakdown videos from one of the best defensive bigs in the last 25 years! The verticality God himself! Who better to breakdown Edey and his defense than you!? I would love to see you work directly with him honestly.
Royyy what’s going on bro, I was just watching that game 2 of the ECF where you went CRAZY against Miami, I still don’t think you get enough love bro, I hope you’re doing well, really enjoy the breakdowns!
Amazing, breakdown Hibbert. I wanted him to go Miami so bad. I think, Ware is underrated but thank you for sharing insights that most players don’t know.
When Dez and his 3 pt threat comes back it will open up another dimension for these guys. More diverse, more threats, more ways for players like Edey to help. These guys have all the tools, they just need to stay healthy!
Always love the vids. I’d love to see a breakdown of Derek Lively’s game. Had an incredible rookie season last year. Literally was the defensive anchor to a finals team and outplayed the DPOY
Please break Edey down after some more games. Purdue faithful love him and you know Pacers fans love you. Also just great seeing a big man talk that kind of game. Most of these breakdown videos are from the guard perspective.
I count two white boys in black jerseys Roy! Glad for another video. I love it when big men use their expertise to breakdown the good stuff of other big men.
Roy have you ever checked out Zach Edey's combine drill stats? In both the years he was at the combine, he was faster in all drills than Brook Lopez, Rudy Gobert, Jonas Valanciunas, and even yourself. It seemed obvious this guy had a spot in the NBA based on those metrics alone!
Watched Edey in College at Purdue and every year he always inproved and he put up big numbers and always dominated but they would feed him the ball so he would be sitting at 20 to 40 points sometimes. Zach has seem to be more comfortable with his team and other players since hes been in the NBA and he will only just get better.
Loved him at Purdue boiler up and great analysis as always Roy can you break down some jarace walker he just had a career night 17 points on 7:7 shooting
The Spain Pick & Roll is one of the hardest actions to guard. Typically put the best 3 point shooter as the screener on the big. It causes a lot of confusion and it needs to be scouted and communicated EARLY to have any success defending it.
I like the fact that Edey does not try to swat the ball into the third row just so he can flex. Al that does is give the ball back to the opposing team. A la Bill Russell, Edey tips the ball to teammates to start the break.
We Boiler fans (Purdue) aren't surprised. its not how good he was at any given point, it was HOW MUCH BETTER he was than the previous year. He just keeps getting better. And has much more nuance to his game (passing, etc) than most have seen yet.
I think all of us Purdue alums want to see the guy do well and expect that he'll earn more minutes as he learns the ropes. So yeah, getting some periodic look-ins from a savvy analyst is golden. I thought it was interesting the other night when Jonas V gave him an elbow to the head and Zach informed him that he didn't think that was nice and politely requested would he please not do that again. (Ok, maybe that's a loose interpretation of events. You've probably been on the receiving end of those things a time or two.)
Roy!!! Big Man!!! I know we’re looking at Edey, but in the early 2010’s I know you got your buckets from either the rim or the mid post. If you could go back would develop a three pointer and kind of evolve into what Brook Lopez has evolved his game to?
That screen the screener bit you went through at the end is a Spain action. And it’s tough to defend. It requires a lot of communication with typically a switch on the second screen. At least how I coach it. You pretty much can’t switch the initial pick.
Looks like spain pnr. On the first play maybe edey stays with sengun, bane picks up ball, left corner picks up van vleet and pippen jr sprints to the corner? tough action to guard, best of luck with the channel!
I don't know why people thought he had zero NBA viability, yeah big men who can shoot or playmake are the only ones who will be winning MVPs these days, but there's no reason he can't be a legit ~20/12 glass cleaner and the third best piece of a competitive squad.
I remember hearing Dan Hurley say that "if people don't think Edey can play in the nba, then that's an NBA problem, not an Edey one, because Edey will no doubt be a good NBA player."
As a Grizzlies fan, I am glad I was wrong about him. He’s slimmed down since March. He’s leaner muscle. Kid hasn’t taken a day off since leading his team to the title. He’s taking countless reps to develop a three. I learned he was a hockey and baseball player before he ever touched a basketball. Great agility for his size. Not slow for a man of his massive frame. His work ethic will make him a perennial top 5 center. Maybe top three. In hindsight I cannot believe he fell to 9.
at 4:58 the way Edey is able to swing and seal is the one of the most underrated aspects to his game. Jordan Sperber, the head of basketball strategy at Mississippi State, made a video on this last year and shows how elite Edey was at this in Purdue's offense: ua-cam.com/video/Qpr7VnAG8u0/v-deo.htmlsi=CCUNF4bp18pF2TbM&t=494 So many times Edey would have his defender facing the wrong direction.
Edey landed in the right place. He could’ve been a Blazer … How about a Clingan video? He just started against the T’Wolves and had 8 blocks (almost triple double).
At the top screen it looks like the defender should go over the top. It looks like in the video he could have went over the top. By the defender trying to go under, Senguin can turn and step toward the basket without getting a moving pick call. I like Edey. His highlight plays are all going to his right. He's big enough to keep going to his right until someone stops it. When he turns to his left and rolls to the basket he is better than what most people think. He's not as herky-jerky as I thought he would be. But he has to always be able to catch with his right hand being a major part of the play. I think one question is how long will he be able to keep going to his right before a team shuts it down defensively? I'm guessing it depends on the opponent. Look for him to start rolling left more often. Looks like he can do that too.
Roy you're already head and shoulders above most analysts in the game simply because you're willing to say you're wrong at times, fantastic video and really good analysis, I'll certainly be watching more.
We are so very happy to have Edey. GO GRIZZLIES!
