Purdue Fans knew somethings the "experts" overlooked. Edey was WAY more athletic than the experts gave credit for. Edey started playing basketball about 6 years ago. Most NBA players are in the third grade when they are playing their 6th year of basketball. Edey was overlooked coming into college as well, and came in behind an all Big Ten center, yet earned immediate playing time and took over from the All Star as starter because of his work ethic. Not many players work as hard. Because Edey didn't grow up as a pampered super star, he's super humble and willing to do whatever the organization asks. He's not going to demand anything, minutes, points, starting, nothing. He will start, he will come off the bench. He will learn new skills. Brief note, but Luka Garza has the highest scoring rate in the NBA, he can score in any way, probably be a legit backup center on another team. Wolves just don't need him that much and he's bad on defense.
All those busted big that werent ultra athletic or sharpshooters would still be in the nba if they were 7'4 lol. The reason they failed is because they werent long, tall, athletic and or strong enough to still get their shots off. Edey is all of those things other than maybe secondary lateral quickness and is more skilled than most of them were, stronger than most of them were and most importantly reads the floor and passes out of the post at a high level
I feel like I remember Edey seeming like he had the potential to be a player like this while he was in college but the system Purdue was running basically didn't need him to utilize more of his mobility. I feel like you could tell that Edey had more than just a big man post game but he was just rarely ever put in a situation to further develop or showcase that.
When you see a college player improve each year in college, you know he is working his but off. No unnecessary comments on him should be made until after the 1st year. He continues to work hard he is going to make it in the NBA.
According to ChatGPT -- which confirmed my own beliefs 😀... What is the bias called when comparing an NBA player only to the past and ignoring his actual current and potential abilities? Answer: This bias is often referred to as anchoring bias or status quo bias. Anchoring Bias: This occurs when someone fixates on initial information (e.g., past performance) and fails to adjust their assessment adequately based on new or current information. In this case, the player’s past performance overly influences how they are judged, rather than considering their current abilities and potential growth. Status Quo Bias: This reflects a preference for the current or historical state of things, resisting change or reevaluation, which could result in ignoring the player's evolution or potential. Both biases could lead to undervaluing or overvaluing a player's true abilities.
The jazz could have easily promised him the 28th pick and he woulve stayed in the draft. He went 1 pick before them this year and im pretty sure they had him at the top of their board. Ainge would light up anytime edey was brought up in the offseason
I'm a Spurs fan. I was desperately hoping that the Spurs would pick Edey and pair him with Wemby. Wemby at the 3, Sochan at the 4, and Edey at the 5....Damn. Most NBA coaches and teams are simply lazy. The NBA is much simpler than it was before. There's still a place for a solid post game.
He’s been out for a month on a sprained ankle. I don’t think anyone doubted his talent but rather were worried about his injury issues. He’s awesome IF he plays but that means nothing when he doesn’t
Eddy is Nice a double double machine Reminds me alot of a young pau minus the mid range gasol had hes more similar to marc gasol good footwork and hands 🏀 💯
Naw. Right now with how the picks are looking Edey would be 7th if we kept the same player positions drafted and if not he'd crack T5. When you see the few guys ahead of him, its definitely a safe argument he jumps at least 2 spots
Ive always felt Edey could be a top 5 center in the league. Maybe not of all time, but at some point in his career. I thought he was the best in his draft class.
@just watch the finals game of him in college. The dude was insane. His teammates were bricking every shot yet Edey was hustling his ass off and kept them in the game through most of it. It looked like he was playing UConn 1v5. He had 37/60 of Purdue’s points. I had never seen a player in nba or ncaa try so hard to win a game. He’s also 7’4’’, 300 lbs, and not awkward like a lot of guys have been around that height. The dude has great coordination and even has a jumper. He also started playing basketball probably later than most other hoopers, so I think he’s got a ton of potential to be an all star one day.
Nice piece, but the one thing I never hear about Edey… he’s super competitive! This kid has some sh&t in his game. Did no one see him go after Valancuinas?!
I think people undervalued his sheer size. The reality is we haven't seen someone that large on the court since Shaq and Yao. Most bigs in the league simply don't have the options to stop him. Embiid might, but I can't think of anyone else off the top of my head who has enough mass to stop him. Wemby's the only one with comparable size, and he's a stick. Still, I don't think he'll be a star ever in his career. He is, at the end of the day, a traditional big, and that simply isn't something as useful in the NBA anymore. He'll probably do great on the Grizzlies, because he'll be a 3rd or 4th option for them. I don't think he'll ever be a great NBA big though.
IMO The biggest assets Edey has , is that even though he is 7ft4 he is proportional , and his very coordinated and seems to understand that he can't get too heavy and has already done work on that , unlike Zion or Shaq lol . With Wemby , my first opinion of him was he looked brittle , but in the year he has been in the league his has worked his arse off to increase his size and to take care of his flexibility. I had the same opinion with Chet as i did with Wemby , unfortunately I don't think that Che is going to be able to change much with his body , and he is now out with a hip fracture because he has no meat to protect those bones when they hit that wood floor
He became super efficient in college... at his size... only thing that can stop him is an injury. Some so called expert talking heads need to be fired.
Top 5 really? I mean there’s the top 5 originally selected risacher, sarr, reed, castle, and holland. Out of those 5 the only team I could see being disappointed enough to change their pick is the pistons but even then they knew holland would be dog shit on offense. All of those players have 3 years in the nba to develop to the age edey is now, so I think that’s also jumping the gun. Not to mention all the players picked after him who are over preforming as well McCain, Dalton, Wells, and even Ryan Dunn. I’d take at least two of those guys over Edey. I also still believe in Clingan, Saluan, and Dill longterm. People were saying the same stuff about Jaime Jacquez “how did he fall this far” and mocking him 3rd overall in redrafts same with kuz. Let’s just slow down
Also the thing about him not playing that long. He played those years at img academy and on a d1 basketball team, where as a guy like clingan played at his local highschool and only had two years in college
He's evolved nicely so far this year. I could see him becoming a poor man's jokic wth his foot work and finesse. He's a competent shooter, just needs to get better in the corners
Jokic? How would he be like Jokic who can shoot from anywhere and is a top 3 passer. Edey has more potential then most realize and i recognize that but your comments are out of line
Big men are back and were never not dominate in the NBA. We have just forgotten how powerful the big man is cause we lie about the analytics and ignore the real statistics saying how bad the league is today.
Relax my guy. Saying a guy who went 9th overall because he was a 4 year college player, is nuts. If Edey fell to 20th or the 2nd round then yes, you can absolutely say that teams “miscalculated” on him. But at #9 you can’t say teams miscalculated on him because one team took him #9 overall (VERY rare for a 3 year and something that hasn’t happened probably a decade overall most likely. There might have been a 4 year senior that snuck into the top 4 over the last decade but I just can’t think of him off the top of my head, further illustrating why Edey going #9 overall was surprising). It’s wild to say a back to back Wooden Player of the Year who played for the natty and just dominated NCAA hoops for two years fell to #9 overall but then you study game film on him and his combine film it makes some sense. Also keep in mind that Edey was in the shape of his life at the combine. His movement absolutely helped his stock and he wouldn’t have dropped much even if the Grizzlies passed. Ten years ago Grizzlies would’ve likely been a lottery pick after his junior year so Purdue would’ve never been able to go in their magical run. Twenty years ago he maybe would’ve been a top 5 pick Thirty years ago he might’ve gone #1 overall (especially in this garbage can of a draft. Imagine being told 7-8 years ago that in 2024 you’ll win the lottery and get the #1 player in the draft. You’ll likely draft a guy dude, the second year in a row a French teenager was drafted #1 overall. The 2023 #1 overall will end up being a top 10 player all time and the 2024 #1 overall pick will be lucky to be an NBA player in 5 years.
I said before last year, 2023, Draft, that if Edey was in it, if I were the Mavs, I would take him in 1st round. They drafted Lively, bc they needed a center, but how much better would they have been last year with Edey underneath??
These scouts let Nikola freakin Jokic fall to the second round and They thought Deandre Ayton was better than Luka Doncic. If that doesn’t tell you how lazy they are, I don’t know what will. I was hoping the other teams let him slide to the second round to see the Warriors draft him, he was what they needed.
@Purdue 25/12/2.2 @Memphis 12/7/1 No one said he couldn’t play, but his game clearly has not “translated”. He’ll never be able to defend in space, illustrated by his 5.6 fouls per 36, and this will always limit his minutes.
He only played 1/3 of the court time as his college days. That stat will likely be similar if he has played same minutes. He is also not the main scoring option now when they have Ja and JJJ.
Its not hard to understand Edeys game is not sexy and the media "EXPERTS" were saying he could not play in the NBA. Basically like most media "EXPERTS" they cannot think out of their lane.
He fits in the Grizzlies very well though. My guess is that analysts couldn’t see a good fit for him in any team for some reason or another. I don’t think it was much of problem with his skills, but they had to verbalize it somehow. Also there are stats that say that players that spend longer playing college ball tend to not work out in the NBA.
Just watch Boban running and then watch Zach running Boban looks like he's being electrocuted. Zach is incredibly coordinated for being huge on top of being tall
"NBA draft "ANALYST" KRISTAN PEAK" Maybe someone should tell her ZACK EDEY has WAY more business being an NBA prospect.....than SHE does being a NBA "DRAFT ANALYST"
For me, it was the Garza flop that made me skeptical. I don't watch the B10, and from the little I saw he just looked like another oversized klunky center who didn't shoot a lot of 3's.
Was that lady taken out of context? Who should they have taken? And with Clingan going 2 picks earlier? He’s a good fit there and I got one guy who I would have taken there instead (if you disregard fit). The take a teen who flashes potential for 4 years and then You have to give a max deal time is fading. A little polish goes a long way.

Well coached throughout college career .
He continues to work hard he is going to make it in the NBA.
because ncaa doesnt really prepare them for the nba
It never ceases to amaze me how badly the "experts" miss at times.
According to ChatGPT -- which confirmed my own beliefs 😀...
What is the bias called when comparing an NBA player only to the past and ignoring his actual current and potential abilities?
Answer:
This bias is often referred to as anchoring bias or status quo bias.
Edey was a beast in college
i never doubted him. he'll do just fine when he figures it all out. might take a season or two but, he'll be a great player if he can stay healthy.
There's still a place for a solid post game.
i wonder how johni broome is going to do in the draft
I gotta admit that I didn't therapist game would translate in the NBA but I'm glad I was wrong. I hope Zach sees continued success at the pro level.
He’s been out for a month on a sprained ankle. I don’t think anyone doubted his talent but rather were worried about his injury issues. He’s awesome IF he plays but that means nothing when he doesn’t
duncan robinson doing ur voiceovers? crazy
This last draft is an example of gms overthinking it, in a redraft I think Edey, McCain, and knect would be too 5
I think the top 3 are most likely locks but yeah right now those 3 put them in any order you want and I'd be down
Eddy is Nice a double double machine Reminds me alot of a young pau minus the mid range gasol had hes more similar to marc gasol good footwork and hands 🏀 💯
I have hope in Edey as I still have hope for bol bol
If we redrafted, he'd be picked at 9 again
Yup but for better reasons.
Naw. Right now with how the picks are looking Edey would be 7th if we kept the same player positions drafted and if not he'd crack T5.
When you see the few guys ahead of him, its definitely a safe argument he jumps at least 2 spots
Nah. Detroit would have drafted him at #5
@@hdhdhzh259 I'm not sure that 3 guys have been better. For fit and role, he's in the perfect market. We love us a monster in the paint in Memphis.
I wonder how would Edey stack up against Atlanta's bigs... would Atlanta have traded an existing big for some help on the wings?
As a Lakers fan I was hoping for him to drop at 17
Ive always felt Edey could be a top 5 center in the league. Maybe not of all time, but at some point in his career. I thought he was the best in his draft class.
You're tripping
Big is a defensive position now. Gotta be able to run the 2-5 on offense whether you’re 6’8 or 7’8.
Nice piece, but the one thing I never hear about Edey… he’s super competitive! This kid has some sh&t in his game. Did no one see him go after Valancuinas?!
One could say he’s making the case for Edey
Rasheed Wallace said Edey should go #1 overall. Everyone argued with him.
how come there was no such speculation on Spurs' french giant last season? damn i forgot his name...
Dude im og clayton dis you!?
Edey wont be rookie of the Year. So you should make a video on Jared McCain who was even more underrated
His success is the definition of it matters who drafts you …any other team would have fumbled his career
I see Clayton i subbed
Might be a little early to make a call on this one. He's played 14 games so far.
Media and nba teams are too caught up with the curry warriors era .
He became super efficient in college... at his size... only thing that can stop him is an injury. Some so called expert talking heads need to be fired.
A 7ft 4 baseball pitcher?
Now I’m curious who the tallest pitcher is
Top 5 really?
Averaging about 12 ppg on 61% shooting and 7 boards doesn't sound bad for a "miscalculation"
I’d like to mention Derek lively
He's evolved nicely so far this year. I could see him becoming a poor man's jokic wth his foot work and finesse. He's a competent shooter, just needs to get better in the corners
Jokic? How would he be like Jokic who can shoot from anywhere and is a top 3 passer. Edey has more potential then most realize and i recognize that but your comments are out of line
Big men are back and were never not dominate in the NBA. We have just forgotten how powerful the big man is cause we lie about the analytics and ignore the real statistics saying how bad the league is today.
i was in the consensus just due to watching his play with the national team where he just looked really slow.
Brook Lopez’s successor if he gets better at 3s
I just want to say, this can't be the worst draft ever simply because 2000 exists
Twenty years ago he maybe would’ve been a top 5 pick
Thirty years ago he might’ve gone #1 overall (especially in this garbage can of a draft.
@Purdue 25/12/2.2
@Memphis 12/7/1
No one said he couldn’t play, but his game clearly has not “translated”.
His looks are deceiving. He doesn't really look athletic but he is actually pretty darn athletic for his size.
The guy is physically bigger than shaq when he entered the NBA. If he can build up strength, he's going to be impossible to stop.
I wanna see him against wemby same height but polar opposites
I called it😊
Luka Garza is actually pretty nice though. He does well for the minutes he plays but he's buried on the depth chart
Just watch Boban running and then watch Zach running
Boban looks like he's being electrocuted. Zach is incredibly coordinated for being huge on top of being tall
Now do Jaylen Wells

"NBA draft "ANALYST" KRISTAN PEAK"
Maybe someone should tell her ZACK EDEY has WAY more business being an NBA prospect.....than SHE does being a NBA "DRAFT ANALYST"
He was NEVER the odds on favorite to be NBA ROY. NEVER, not once.
For me, it was the Garza flop that made me skeptical. I don't watch the B10, and from the little I saw he just looked like another oversized klunky center who didn't shoot a lot of 3's.
I didn't miscalculate he's gigantic and can score I didn't understand why people were so concerned about his athleticism
Where's Peek now?
