  • Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Tommy James, Legendary Rock and Roll Musician
    About Harvey's guest:
Today’s special guest, Tommy James, a legendary musician, singer-songwriter and producer who’s brought us one of the longest string of non-stop hits in the history of pop and rock music, first as the lead singer and guitarist in the superstar group, Tommy James and the Shondells - and then, as a highly successful solo artist.
He’s had 9 platinum albums, 32 Billboard Hot 100 Hits and 23 gold singles, including “Crystal Blue Persuasion”, “Crimson & Clover”, “Mony Mony”, “I Think We’re Alone Now”, “Sweet Cherry Wine”, “Hanky Panky”, “Mirage”, “Three Times in Love” and “Draggin’ the Line”. His songs have been covered by everyone from Billy Idol, Tom Jones, Prince, and Bruce Springsteen to Dolly Parton, Kelly Clarkson and Cher.
His music has been featured in 65 feature films including “Moneyball”, “Austin Powers” and “Forest Gump”, as well as 53 television shows including “Boston Legal”, “Criminal Minds” - and who can ever forget the haunting sound of “Crystal Blue Persuasion” in the season 5 finale of “Breaking Bad”.
In 2010 he published his turbulent and eye-opening memoir entitled, “Me, The Mob and the Music: One Hell of a Ride with Tommy James and the Shondells”, which is listed as #12 in Rolling Stone Magazine’s 25 greatest rock ‘n’ roll memoirs of all time.
In 2019, he celebrated his 50th year in the music business by releasing his highly anticipated album entitled, “Alive”, with 2 tracks hitting the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart. And last year, he released a new compilation album entitled, “Rock Party”. He’s sold well over 100 million records worldwide, and he’s received 5 BMI “Million-Air” awards, in recognition of his songs being played more than 22 million times on the air. He’s received the Pittsburgh Legend Award and The Jukebox Artist of the Year Award, and he’s been inducted into the New Jersey Hall of Fame AND the Las Vegas Entertainers Hall of Fame.
And he’s attracted a whole new generation of music lovers with his own show every Sunday night on the Sirius XM Radio 60s Gold channel.

There’s a reason I’m known for interviewing legends - and Tommy James is one of them. He’s had an incredibly impressive string of #1 hits, and his mega-bestselling memoir is now the subject of a major motion picture currently in production. In this candid conversation he talks about his turbulent relationship with Morris Levy, the mobster who ran Roulette Records and cheated him out of millions. The tribute to his recently deceased wife is so poignant.

My goodness Harvey you hit this one out of the park! Tommy James is truly one of the best music artists to emerge in the 1960s. He deserves all the accolades you bestowed upon him and more. Many years ago I found a gold 45 record for "Hanky Panky. It's a nice artifact from the 1960s and a great piece of nostalgia. Thanks again for your diligence in getting the facts and conducting an interview that is meaningful and respectful.

Tommy James might be the humblest dude in all of rock music’s history. A great talent who survived an industry that disposes its greatest artists without a second thought. Always great to see him still out there playing his music.

Harvey, I have seen many an interview with Tommy James. Yours is by far the very best! I have been his fan since I was a young girl. I met him at a few meet and greets after his concerts at Oakdale Theatre in Wallingford, CT. He took his time, didn't rush meeting me, and made eye contact. He made me feel like that little girl again. At one concert while he was walking through the audience, I realized he was shaking the persons hand directly behind me. I could hardly wait for my turn. He walked right by me, heading back towards the stage. I blurted out loud. "What about me?" I was mortified what I was thinking, actually was spoken out loud. Tommy turned around and walked back up the steps looked me right in the eye and gave me a hug! I wondered how he knew it was me. It is surprising to me when you meet your childhood idols, how your mind immediately goes back to how they made you feel when you were playing their 45's and singing right along with them.
    Thank you, Harvey.
Thank you, Tommy, for being you!

The best interview with Tommy James I've seen. My wife and I had the pleasure of meeting Tommy James following a Shondells performance in Southern California a few years ago. He's a very warm and witty guy. He lives near where I grew up in New Jersey, so we had a lot to talk about. "Me, The Mob, and The Music" is a powerful read. I highly recommend it.

When are going to see a well done, epic, 3 hour film about gangster businessman Morris Levy? Perhaps Oliver Stone might direct. Do it right or don't do it all. Tommy James should be at the core of how this story is told. A great documentary would be most welcome. Mr. James is a fascinating fellow who is down to earth and humble. He's a good human being. Tommy James - We too had encounters with Morris Levy, as Morris was mutual friends with Daniel J. Henkin, who was owner of C.G. Conn, Inc. and other band manufacturing corporations. And Mr. Henkin produced some of our demos recordings, back in 1966 through 1973. But we did't know, what you mention in your interview at 17 minutes & 55 seconds, to go to publishing companies. We stayed in Indiana & Michigan performing for over seven (7) years. We have some of our songs at: barry ray heflick music playlist youtube. I play organ & piano, but don't sing much anymore. But extremely appreciate your heart-felt songs, exciting performances, and this interview above! Have a copy of your book titled: Me, the Mob, and the Music. Excellent book! Looking forward to seeing your book as a movie! Also,, our condolences on your loss of your wife Linda. But, just wanted to say thank you, Tommy James! Hoping to meet you someday.
