  • Here's a great simple DIY mod for guitarists who want to try a spring-loaded expression pedal, one that automatically returns itself to heel position when you step off. Great for auto-engage wah and many other expression effects.
You can buy a factory spring loaded pedal from Mission Engineering, but they costs money, and you can't remove the spring easily if you end up not liking it. Also there is no way to customize the spring tension for your own perfect feel.
    You can with this mod.
Best of all, you can try this on almost any expression pedal in less than ONE MINUTE! TA DAAA!
Try it out, have fun, and if you don't like it you can remove the mod in 10 seconds.

Lmao I was prepared to have to find a spring affix it to the pedal. Glad I found this much easier solution first 😅

you sir are a legend. sometimes the simplest ideas get overlooked and they are the best ones. You remind me of my dad he would think of things like this, id waste hours trying to source springs and clips and trying to mount them.

Thanks for the likes. A few people asked what size inner tube to use. I looked in my parts bin, found the inner tube I originally cut up :) It says "Axiom - MADE IN TAIWAN 1.9 / 2.125".
It occurs to me that not all tube brands would necessarily be the same rubber compound or stretch out the same way, so your mileage may vary considerably. Mine luckily worked perfect first try, and they've held up.. still working great 3+ years later (although not playing as much during Covid)

This is one of the most underrated videos on UA-cam I ever saw, and I am myself tinkerer and sometimes repair and mod very complex devices that nobody ever repaired. I found this video before trying to understand which expression pedal to buy. This puts my doubts to rest since most of the other mechanics or Electronics I can mod myself . It is worth to emphasize this solution is extremely environment friendly and is basically free since if you don't have yourself used bike tubes you can ask in any bike shop for the used tube for free.

Sometimes the short cut method is just what we need to try something for awhile. Brilliant simplicity.

dude thats pretty smart.. When i was 15 I bought a cheap wah pedal as my first pedal, it was a spring loaded wah and I could never get used to the feeling of the cry baby style even after having various cry baby and spring loaded wahs since then.
This may seem simple to everyone but to be honest most "legit spring wahs" mechanisms are equally as simple. Most the time theres just a spring on the underside held in by some plastic.

This is awesome. I've been trying to decide which way I want to go, but the obvious advantage to this is that you can easily interchange between both options with a standard pedal and nothing more than simple and cheap bike tire tube. 10/10 good sir! Thank you!

Was thinking about adding a spring to the on/off button.
But this rubber will work too.
    Thanks

Brilliant ha. Also, love the screw mods. I’m about to roll an ankle on some of these mini pedals, so gonna find a way to creat a latching system on my own board.

Brilliant! Simple! And I had just emailed Mission Engineering to ask if my pedal could be converted to spring-loaded before viewing your video.

It works! Had to sacrifice a bike tube but well worth it. Applied the mod to both expression and wah pedals.

I settled on three overlapping strips of bike tube for a nice stiff spring feel, but this is personal preference. I did both my expressions and I would never go back to non-spring, it works great.

Hi - thanks for this vid - I'm keen to try this but was wondering if you could share the exact size of tyre tube you're using? I ordered one thinking I could stretch it but it was quickly apparent I was not going to be able to stretch it enough. Thanks!
