The MC40 Cyclotron Decommissioning | After 20 Years of Research

The MC40 cyclotron was installed at the Medical Research Centre unit in Hammersmith in 1986 and for the next 20 years made a significant contribution to the MRC research programmes.
In 2008 ANBC Ltd were engaged to project manage the decommissioning of this facility. Work began on site in May 2009.
The vault contents were surveyed and characterised and a virtual model of the facility was then constructed. This model became an essential tool in establishing a decommissioning strategy.
All metal items had been activated by neutron bombardment arising from use of the cyclotron. As such, the project's two objectives were to minimise operator dose and materials handling.
