    I love the Plano "tool box"...! As for the stuck ring... that's why you run 1 oz of Seafoam / gallon of your premix fuel...! (It would have prevented the carbon buildup in that ring land.)

      @@THISOLDOUTBOARD1 have you ever came across motors you can't fix?

    • @THISOLDOUTBOARD1
      @THISOLDOUTBOARD1  5 років тому +3

      Hey. Not really, everything is pretty much fixable , it really depends on how much time/money your willing to spend on it. I like to stay under 2-250. Like this motor, the guy was asking 125, which pretty much means 100, which is what I paid, but I probably could have got it for 75/80. Overall, the parts, (which is what it was advertised as, a ''parts motor'') the electric starter and bracket, carb, etc is easily worth more, but I'm not really into selling parts although there is money to be made in parts. The whole idea is to have a good running outboard at a fraction of the price. Down here a 25 horse short shaft tiller in good running/looking condition can bring 7-800 + easily. Anyway back to your question, everything is buildable, it just depends on the builder and which direction they want to go (hint hint). I'm at 100, and 1-150 left in my budget, 100 would be better, Hahaha. So, can I get it up and running and stay within budget? Stay tuned and see which direction I go! You never know whats gonna happen next with ''This Old Outboard'' ! Thanks again for watching and commenting, I really do appreciate it. Stay tuned !

    I've got a johnson 25r72r. How do the rings face when being installed on the piston and how do I tell the top ring from the bottom ring?

    • @THISOLDOUTBOARD1
      @THISOLDOUTBOARD1  6 місяців тому +1

      Hey. Thanks for tuning in. Look at the piston ring grooves, you'll see that the top groove is beveled to fit the top ring, it only goes on one way. Thanks again & Stay tuned !

    I need some help other than what does video shows I've got a 78 25 horse with a hole in the housing and I'm not sure if it's an exhaust hole or if water would get into the gear casing. there's nothing else wrong with the lower gear casing housing except there was a peephole that started eating itself out around the hole and somebody while or somebody cut a bigger all-out I guess they were going to put a plate in there aluminum welding

    • @THISOLDOUTBOARD1
      @THISOLDOUTBOARD1  4 роки тому +1

      Hey. I think I understand what your talking about. There is a drain hole that allows the water to drain out of the cavity located in the upper part of the gearcase behind the water pump so it dosent stay full when the boat/motor comes out of the water. Its located next to the shift shaft bushing/seal in the top of the gear case and drains down lower out the side weep/peep hole. It has nothing to do with exhaust. I've had a few that were clogged and gently drilled them out. You should be all right unless its eating into the gearcase and letting water in. Check the oil. You could plug it up with bondo or jb weld and try and dump the water out of the cavity when its out of the water. Water sitting in that cavity will only cause more corrosion.

    I have this same motor. My shifter won't go into reverse unless I get a "running" start from forward and slam in back through neutral and into reverse. Does that bolt outside on the lever adjust for that?

    • @THISOLDOUTBOARD1
      @THISOLDOUTBOARD1  5 років тому

      Hey. I would think it does or should, but it dosent, or I'm not doing something right. You can take that small panel off, with the two screws on the side of the mid/exhaust section and check your shift linkage, the brass connector may be worn or loose. All it takes is a fraction of an inch in the linkage to throw the whole thing off. You'll see what I mean in my next vid coming up in a day or two.

      When I lift up the bottom of that black vertical pole with the two springs on it I can shift it easily. I wonder if someone put the wrong springs in there. They make it so hard for the lever follower to move backward.

    We got to get you the real OMC flywheel puller and one of the electric impact guns from HF (only $40)! These things make removing the flywheel nut and popping that flywheel a breeze...I forgot to look, but did it look like the crankcase has been split before (paint off bolts/sealer oozing out between block halves)? It is impossible fore me to judge from here....Those two rings are different design, different end gaps are normal. The top ring is a "pressure back" ring, it uses the combustion pressure to help expand it....You might want to measure those piston skirts and cylinder walls prior to reassembly, who knows what you have there....I didn't see anything that would explain that compression difference...OK, you found that the bottom piston is oversize by .030", an OEM piston was used. Is the top piston standard or oversize? Again, I would advise measuring those piston skirts and cylinder walls before reassembly...Check new ring end gaps and ring groove clearances as well....I sure don't want you to put this thing back together only to have the same issue.....

    • @fleetwin1
      @fleetwin1 5 років тому

      It is perfectly fine on the OMCs of that era to have one oversize and one standard cylinder/piston, it won't be "out of balance"....Hope it works out OK....
