Really excellent comparison! Thanks. These are two models we’re comparing, so very relevant! The trim levels we’re comparing are RWD Model Y vs. AWD Q4, because the Q4 only comes in AWD. Nevertheless, our opinion… Q4 Advantages: - Comfortable, functional, and attractive interior and cockpit design. - Slightly smoother and quieter ride, but not by much. - AWD (again we’d take RWD if it were available). Model Y Advantages: - _Much better_ road-trip charging, although Audi supposedly has a preliminary agreement to access to Tesla Superchargers in 2025. - Longer range, although Tesla overpromises, whereas Audi, if anything, underpromises range-wise. - Single-pedal driving. - 360 overview camera. - Much better price (again for the trim levels we’re comparing): Could change tomorrow, but currently, MSRP $45K vs. $63K. - Way less-buggy, and more often- and consistently-updated software. - More-complete ADAS (Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems), although maybe not much better ultimately, since Tesla’s “full-self-driving” still makes a lot of mistakes, so you really need to hawk-eye it. It’s not exactly free either, at $8000. The biggest problem for Model Y, on our opinion, is its idiotic and over-complicated cockpit design: Yes, at first it _looks_ simpler, but that’s only because they _cram everything_ into that overcrowded touch screen!
Oh, another advantage for Model Y: It has a heat pump, which warms the cabin with much less battery drain. The feature list for Q4 “Premium Plus” trim lists a heat pump, but I just found out that that only heats the battery!
I test-drive both before buying the Tesla. The quality of the Q4 interior was a big disappointment for me, much more hard plastic although around 20k more expensive than the Tesla. Yes, the UX of the Tesla isn't perfect, but we have got used to it in just a few days. Meanwhile, the Audi tries just a little bit too hard to scream 'premium' by adding buttons and angles all around the cockpit. But tastes are different, in the end both cars are great.
@@cionheart, we also went with the Tesla, Model Y Long-Range AWD. A couple amendments to my comments above (feel free to comment, or not): * The only thing about the Model Y that we kinda regret is its bumpy ride. Usually it’s OK, but sometimes it’s outright harsh and annoying. * It came with a promotional free month of FSD. I was very surprised at how well it works! It seems to be improving rapidly. Elaborating upon FSD: I was expecting to turn it on once or twice for a … technology rollercoaster ride, or perhaps Russian roulette. No, it worked dang well, and I used it quite often! I only once saw it do anything dangerous, and that was easy to correct. I caught it doing a few very-minor violations of the law, like left turns into the right lane, or taking a right turn at an intersection flawlessly except for failing to signal. Same result either way: _Definitely_ have to hawk-eye it, but it actually worked surprisingly well, and was more relaxing to hawk-eye its real-time driving decisions than to make and execute those decisions myself.
I must say. I enjoyed your comparison. I own a Y and dont like the things you pointed out. I only have 5,000 miles on my Y and I want out! Im looking at an e-tron. I like the sunroof, cushier interior, more accessible controls etc. Also the nicer interior and feel of the seats in the e-tron. Thanks!
We actually settled with the Audi Q4 e tron because Tesla lacked human connection with customer service. They expect you to do all the paperwork with their app. It was insufferable with the documentation part when we had questions because the dealership staff were not responsive. People have also complained about their service parts when something happens to the car. Also, the regenerative braking is no longer able to turned off in Tesla for the new models so we felt nauseous driving them. Audi being Audi, had a lot of customer service and support. The leasing was smooth and the interior design looks far better. Also, Audi allows us to buy out the car after the lease while Tesla forbids it. Audi for the win P.S. Your music is soooo loud
Great review. by declaring upfront personal ownership and to maintain unbias in review is a rarity in today's world. well done reviewer. you've earned my respect. Thank you for the data points. It'll help me in my decision.😊
When it comes to range, Audi falls significantly short compared to Tesla, especially in cold winter conditions. It's important to talk about the range, as it's one of the key factors people consider when purchasing an EV.
Good review! I’m leaning towards the Audi. The model Y just feels cheap inside and no shade for the glass roof can heat up fast in Southern California. However, how is the customer support and repairs? Not sure if that varies by region but plays a big role if something needs to be fixed.
I'm in north LA County and I've found the wait times for repair (my one big one was the a/c which went out 60 days after purchase) to be ridiculously long. They had to take out the windshield to fix the a/c and broke it in the process. It was a nighmare! Also--those glass roofs make me crazy!
You are entitled to your opinions and words, it seems you are in the same mindset than Mr Trump and friends 😊 what everyone does with his money and buying decisions has political impacts, you should open some history / economy books…
Compared 3 EV for our first EV car: model Y / KIA EV 6 and the Q4. Decision: Q4 sportback won hands down, yes it’s more expensive than the other but it worths it. In the model Y the material feels so cheap and the main and only screen is not convenient. The exterior design : the front of model Y makes me 🤢
Hi, im having to make the same decision. Got a M3 now but gonna switch this year. Options are a MY or a Q4 etron sportsback. I do hear some noise about limited upgrades on software of the Audi. Anything you heard/experienced?
@@bjrnchrstnI think it reached a good maturity level from what I saw with the latest update which improves the MMI (itineraries are displayed much faster… better to double check). Maybe it is the only area for which tesla is still a bit better
Tell me you are sponsored by Audi, without telling me you are sponsored by Audi. This is ridiculous, Audi makes you pay for everything, where the Tesla has all comfort options as standard. For reference, in the Netherlands we need pay thousands to be able to differentiate temperatures between driver and front-passenger😂. To get the same specs as a base Tesla, you’ll pay 10k more
Owning the car does make you biased - whether it is for or against the vehicle. These are not really competitors. The Tesla Model Y is more efficient than most EVs in the segment, but that is the only positive quality. If you can forego all of the quality issues and the minimalism at the sake of usability and safety (self-driving via cameras only) and want the most efficient EV possible then there is your pick. If you want a car created by a company with years of experience at making cars well, then choose any other EV. I do wish the Audi and VAG platform EVs were more efficient but they are still better products all around. There is a car I would buy for efficiency focus but the Aptera is not released yet.
I don't think the Model Y is even that efficient. We had one for 2 years and never saw more than 230 miles on a car rated at 330 miles. Teslas are overhyped.
@@ModernDayMixtapes Too much variability, different people live in different climates with vastly different environmental conditions and usage habits which can effect efficiency. The 330 miles rated isn’t wrong, just that it can’t reflect everyone’s driving conditions.
If you take Tesla model Y LR AWD with no extra features and build similar Audi Q4 e-tron (it's cheapest trim + convenience package) you will get next result (im talking about WA state): Audi - $59245 + 10.5% sales taxes + registration = $66500 Tesla - $48000 - $7500 tax credit + 10.5% sales tax + registration = $45500 Now think about this and tell me - is there anything that worth $20k extra ? PS. this Audi trim have 5sec 0-60 and 99mph top speed, which is both worse than Tesla (Tesla quicker and faster) this trim has 258mi range on 82kWh battery VS 308mi on 78kWh battery in Tesla (more efficient) both Audi and Tesla charge 20-80% almost 30 min, but Audi top charge speed 120kW vs 250kW Tesla (faster if you dont need full battery) there is a lot of Tesla on the road and bodyshops + factory right in the US, thats makes their cost of fix much lower and easier than Audi
I just saw on the news that new Rivian registrations have surpassed new Tesla in California. The wireless phone "heaters" in the Tesla are a waste of energy as there are plenty of places to connect the phone to recharge it. Also how was the Audi interior as opposed to the plasticky Y? Thanks for posting this.
I was just noticing the insane number of Rivians! The interior is quite nice- I’ve noticed many EVs cheapening out on the interiors to save weight/costs (Genesis GV60, Tesla, etc). I liked this one. The design isn’t my taste inside but the build quality and materials felt solid.
