When asked, Hands down this is my favorite song. Always enjoy when younger people first discover this song. Especially when they really understand what he’s singing about.
It's my karaoke song and I blew my younger brother's mind. He knew the song but that was the first time he actually paid attention to the lyrics. It is mind blowing and accurate even today. It is about empathy.
I used to volunteer as an EMT. Every winter we would go around and try to get the homeless to go to the shelters. There was one we never bothered with. He was homeless by choice. He used to be a doctor, he got tired of all the red tape preventing him from helping people. So he quit his practice and moved to the street. That way, he could get to know the people that needed the help he hadn't been allowed to give. And they would trust him more, because a lot of them were veterans that didn't trust anyone from "the system." So, like the song says. Don't judge others. Instead, learn their story and get to know them.
I still struggle to listen to this song, and my wife simply cannot do it. In 1999, we literally got woke up to hear the news, that her little brother had been killed by a drunk driver the night before. It took her years to be able to sleep with the lights off after that. This song came out kind of around that exact time, which is why that last verse hits us so hard. He was just 18, had just graduated high school, just bought a new truck, and was literally taken before he could make the first payment on it. Then, his “friends” took it to ride around in for a few days after the fact. I was shocked, actually I think we all were, when the Dodge dealership took it back and ate the loss themselves, as they had it moved multiple states away and sold as used. That way we would never see it driving down the road and have to deal with that. Crazy times when you’ve been married for just 3 years. It was hard, but I’m glad I could be there before, during, and after it for my wife and her family. It’s wild to think that was 25 years ago in August. She still struggles with his loss now from time to time. Anyway, be careful out there and try to never put your family in the position of going through the same thing! Your actions can destroy families, as it did hers.
He nearly died from a heart attack, congestive heart failure 😢. It changed him deeply and he had things he had to say 🙏😊. Things he suddenly realized What it's like 😢❤. The reason he left HOP
🎉 Special Shout out to Robert for this request! ❤ What I like about this song is the unique style this band has; a mix between hip hop, alternative rock which feels very 90's, and I love it! I also love that this song is a song with a message, definitely a conversation starter.
There are 2 other Everlast songs I would highly recommend. 1 off this same album is "White Trash Beautiful," the other is more recent titled, "I Get By."
I am and older listener of a lot of music of many different styles, i prefer music from the seventies , in my opinion the best period of music because so much thought that went into the lyrics which created classis, now this song delivered on so many fronts, powerful lyrics, smart writing and cool groove. which there were more songs produced like this. Just freaking Awesome!!!

I think it's more about not judging at all. There's are always a millions reasons that people end up suffering. Even more damaging is using one’s religion to justify judgment.
Truth. Regardless of what we each feel personally, it's hard to understand what someone is going through if you've never been through it. I don't expect someone that has never been through the abuse I went through to understand it. That doesn't mean I can't have empathy though for others and that's the real point of the song.
Hey man this is America last time I checked and you should be able to have your opinion on any subject. And if people don’t like it let them scroll on! Just saying! Because their are very few artists who feel like women shouldn’t have the right to choose over their own bodies!
The abortion subject becomes controversial when the right of one person (the pregnant woman) enters in conflict with the right of another person (the human fetus).
It's crazy that this some was released in 1998 and it's still as relevant as it is.
It has been relevant since the dawn of Civilization.
@@robertwilson2007exactly. Interesting what some young folks think, i bet they think some problem began in the 90’s😮
@@Brandi6666 "Every generation blames the one before, when all of their frustrations come knocking at the door."
It's also crazy that in the same decade this man was the lead singer of House of Pain
Not that crazy. One of the major themes that persist throughout humanity is judgement and hate. Countering that will always be relevant.
This song humbles me. I usually play it a couple of times a year to keep me humble. I've known all of these people.
this song pulls absolutely NO punches.
The level of empathy you showed for this emotionally complex song was beautiful!

The most impactful song released in the last 20 years. I'm not a Whitey Ford fan, but this song is so well done. One of my favorites this century.

No it doesn't, no one unborn or born has a right to another person's body
@@dustnbones0013 and no person has the right to end another person's life, unless their own life is at risk.
