    TAB for this solo: bit.ly/3Nx2qnM
In the mid to late 1980's the guitarist for the band Poison, C.C. Deville, was often criticized for being one of the worst hard rock guitar players alive. Was it true? Was it fair?
In my opinion C.C. got a bad rap. Need proof? Check out the subject of this video, the solo for the Poison hit song "Nothin' But A Good Time."
This came from the bands 2nd album in 1988 called Open Up And Say...Ahh! It's a cool song with a cool riff. But the solo? Fast shredding pentatonic licks? Check. Blazing 3 note per string runs? Check. Whammy bar stuff? Check. Use of the Mixolydian mode? Check. Great phrasing? Check. What's not to like?
Think it's easy because it's C.C.? I dare you to give it a try!
Have fun and make sure and tune down 1/2 step (Eb standard) to play along.
Guitar geek stuff: Signal path for this video was my black Charvel into a Friedman Buxom Boost, then into Friedman JJ jr, then into Two Notes Captor X and I used a Steve Stevens Cab for the solo.
    Rock on!

Even CC disparaged his own playing in a live interview. He said “I had all the right influences. I don’t know what happened!”
    I agree.
But he fit perfectly in Poison. I bought their first release Look What The Cat Dragged In. It was fun. But the whole band as a whole was not giving anyone a run for their money in top notch musicianship. But it worked for them. More power to them!

@@NickLaytonGuitar I can see how he might terrorize a control freak by being a bit wild and unpredictable, but that guy is a world class showman, and honestly a very capable player. Especially considering what all manner of craziness he would unleash live. He might not be a G3 tour candidate, but I think you get more bang for your buck going to see that dude live. I mean, if you actually like rock music, from the partying and good times perspective. I feel like that stuff reminds us why it's good to be alive. Kinda like how Led Zeppelin, Kiss, and Van Halen come across as larger than life.

Love CC. Great songwriter and guitarist *in the studio* but he is pretty terrible *live*. For some reason he is completely chaotic live, he seems to think faster is better. I'm not sure I've ever heard a solo played close to what was on the album. Every Rose is probably the closest he's done that I've heard.

You do realize EVH took 1000s and 1000s of takes, and was the reason VH albums took so long to come out?
AVH was done in a week.
Also, take into consideration how much these guys partied, which didn't help at all.

CC style is like ADHD. He thinks right at that moment. Oh, let me throw in this dive bomb and shred pattern and just fires off like a fire cracker.
When I was in my 20s and recorded, I would disect all of the different guitar tracks that were on the finalized mix and try to emulate that when playing live. Your mind flies around thinking of the different parts when, in retrospect, you can't do that. Stick to the basics of the song. It sounds a lot better.
That's why these bands hire more musicians to fill in live once they get to a certain popularity or add in background tracks like Def Leppard
