  • My solar panels are buried under snow and my battery bank is dead. I ordered a "ROOF BRÜM" designed for clearing snow from solar panels (normal metal roof rakes can scratch solar panels) in the hopes of removing the snow and charging the batteries through the panels on this sunny day.

It is a learning curve, Dan. Be kind to yourself. Merry Christmas, my son from another mother.

My idea was to put thermal solar power pipes behind the solar panels. Put some type of liquid with low freezing temp/high boiling point. It'll keep your solar panels cool in summer and keep them warm in winter. Maybe even a way to heat up the liquid in pipes to melt the snow off.

You should run some kind of warm wire on top, my uncle rigged something like that on his roof like 10 years ago and he just plugs in 1 cord and within minutes sheets slide off clean or they never gather if he does it early enough. His roof design is problematic to have snow gather heavy and it was breaking his gutters too, this way it melts even and even if he isn't there to do it fast enough, they slide off clean and soft because the under layer isn't freezing at all and the water consumes any falling snow.

A sad reminder that winter is coming. I like that roof rake.

Have you heard of a roof scythe it pushes through the snow cutting it in chunks that slide down the attached tarpaulin ribbon that the snow slip n slides down saves alot of time and energy, after the initial weight clearing the foam brush would only need to sweep 2/16th an inch or so off of the panels all scratch free if plastic bottomed i know they make em aluminum but not too hard to change head materials using same pole

We use a hard edged roof rake on our solar panels. The thin profile and stif edge can cut through the crusted snow better. We wrap the edge of the rake with duct tape so it doesn't scratch the panels. Works pretty well for us!

Also I get up here n a ladder or the ridge of the roof to work it rather than the ground....gives you a little more leverage to get that crust busted. Once you get some panel exposed they start heating up pretty quickly and melt the ice.

I'm thinking a ground array would be a good addition!

So sweep your roof every time it snows, and you have the shortest daylight and lowest UV

Yes, don't let them go dead. A charged battery can't freeze. A dead battery can freeze.

Solar panels for the win again.

Have you ever tried putting snow melt in a burlap sack and setting a few on the roof before it snows and it'll keep the snow from settling on your roof while keeping your solar panels clear. Or if its already snowed you can put some snow melt in a few socks and toss them up there and after a bit it'll melt the snow and it'll just slide off causing no damage to the roof or solar panels.
