About OFF GRID with DOUG and Stacy
In 2010 we decided to sell everything and build a log cabin on 11 acres. We have lived in the log cabin for a decade now with no solar power or wind power plus zero public utilities. We live like the pioneers except in the 21st century. We post videos on social media to encourage people to return to the land and make a living with your family. We teach folks:
*Off grid living *Rain water catchment *Cooking with wood
*Food growing *Cooking from scratch *Raised bed gardening
*Food harvesting *fermenting the harvest *food preservation
*Holistic Remedies like Grandma made *How to make money and live this life
*storing food in a root cellar *DIY Build projects
*Animal Husbandry *Raising Chickens, Guinea, Turkeys and Ducks
All of our videos are made to empower you to break free and LIVE YOUR BEST LIFE! - Розваги
I’ve always used a wood stove to heat my home and have a cool room for food and freezer yes I use electric but I can cook off my stove and wash clothes from creek water with a scrub board sponge bath and have a spring for water I’ve learned the old way and I’m a hillbilly from southeastern Kentucky
Excellent, I'm in southeast Ohio. Simulator.
After reading many reviews and watching a lot of videos, I chose this option for my first backup power station. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxHypYDKHAN93Lp2RQpfvU_ksc70wJ00pt I was between this and a larger option that could power a wider range of items, but the price/size/capacity blend seemed right for this unit. Hasn't gotten a ton of use yet, but the build quality is solid and it charges fine via the Rockpals solar panel I purchased to pair with it. One thing to note is that the screen is optimized for a top down viewing angle, which makes sense, but this means it washes out at other angles - especially low angles. Not a huge deal, but perhaps a better option for the display could be used to provide wider viewing angles.
My son saw a notification and then this video under and said "Mom" you have been watching him, he teaches well. Let's listen to this one. He is 11 😃
It is so nice when a company actually does customer service.
Hi Doug, It looks like you have your 3 batteries tied together in parallel. FYI. Make sure that the battery cables come from opposite ends of the paralleled batteries. For example, if the positive cable comes from top left, then the negative cable should come from the bottom right. This helps each battery to drain evenly. That is, if you just run both cables from the top battery over to the inverter, the top battery will be worked harder than the bottom battery.
So nice to have a frig and freezer ❤️😸💞🙋🌲🌲🌲🧚🕊️‼️
Yes batteries should be ran in such manner to balance and stabilize charge through entire batteries equalizing them. Doug! Get a hold of us we are off grid complete 48v system. I have some very cool tips an ideas to maximize your system for efficiency. Giving you more things to use or less generator time ..give us a shout out
Take care be safe all.🙏
Good advice, a bit less important with lithium technology, they will have internal Battery Management systems (BMS) to help maintain equally cells within each battery, but some batteries will work harder if 'laddered' and not pulled across the battery bank.
@@yahwehmission9443 is love to know more!
I'd *
I used signature solar and recently put in my own EG4 inverter and battery system along with a bunch of panels. It is a lot to learn but makes me feel better with an "off grid" option
Thanks for sharing your off grid solar. We are off grid 14 years and love it.
Renogy is a solid company. I've got several of their products and have always been pleased.
A real fridge! I'm sure Stacy is thrilled! 🤗
You guys have the nicest off grid cabin. It’s so cute ❤
I just yesterday saw some of that company Renogy in an industrial complex in Camarillo,Ca,, they are real and big-time thank you my friend and Brother
I really love that you show it ALL...the good, bad and the ugly no matter what. It sure helps the rest of us to make less costly mistakes.
That's a nice system. I remember we had a tiny fridge, too because that's all our little system could handle. I planned everything around the fridge and played Tetris every week hehe.
Definitely, would like to hear a video about alternative heating! 😁. When one thing stops working, always have another way!☺️
I have a propane mr. heater 5 plaque radiant heater uses #20 pd propane tanks, and I have fan heaters also I use in bedrooms when i go to bed & shut the propane heater off, that propane heater heats 1200 sq ft.
Solar is still beyond my comprehension level to afford, yet install. Kudos for getting it done!
Mid-Missouri - All these cloudy days really suck if you have solar. For the past two weeks, ours has averaged about 15 kwh per day. Just two days were good during that time; one produced 45 kwh and one at 60 kwh ( thousand watt hours). During the summer, we will collect above 100 kwh per day. We have a 17 kwh system with 50 panels.
What watt size are each of your panels?
I live in my RV full-time I have 400 W of Renogy and 2000 lithium batteries Works great
Are you able to run all appliances off it too full time? Like fridge and AC? I’m trying to figure this out before I buy all this for an RV. Can’t seem to get a straight answer.
@@vannaoffthewall9344 my ecoflow 1400 watt runs my house fridge/freezer and a large stand alone stand up freezer, an 800 watt will run a 5000BTU window ac, u will have to check how many watts ur ac is.
@@vannaoffthewall9344 Not with 400 W, likely. But RV fridge is electric / propane hybrid, so propane will kick in when batteries go below a certain level to keep your food cold.
I like the portable compact lithium battery pack with solar panels for my devices. I also like the portable solar generator and portable solar panels for the home, because we get lots of sunshine in Texas. It even works on cloudy days. God bless y'all. 😇🙏🇺🇲
I’m 10 seconds in and you got a thumbs up from me just for the cabin!!! Beautiful!
Thanks Anita
Hi Doug & Stacy........Sounds like you two have a very nice system. I'm really happy for you. Congrats, also on your new fridge, Stacy. That's awesome!! 👍
Tammy Lynn Schulz. 🙂💖
Good video! Thanks for going over the whole system. I'm glad you gave solar another shot even though you had a bad experience the last time.
Thank you! I’ve watched several videos on solar power and your explanation of the wiring and breaker box is the most straightforward!! Take care!
Appreciate the fact that you're willing to adapt, change and give an honest opinion.
Glad you got on board with a solar/battery system.
As an electrician, your wiring at the combiner box is a little concerning. Everything is connected properly, however I would recommend some strain relief on those positive wires before they land on the breaker. At a minimum some sticky backs and zip ties to keep the weight off those terminals.
Also, while not absolutely necessary, you might also want some bushings or grommets in those knockouts at the bottom of the box.
I'm not trying to criticize what you're doing, just trying to be helpful and offer ways to minimize points of failure. It makes troubleshooting much easier when you do eventually have a problem.
I love what you guys are doing. Gob bless!
I’m second both ways
Yeah, I was thinking there was a few places that needed some attention there. It would probably be fine forever, but there’s always a chance.
That system definitely looks like it runs better than the last one you had....this one actually WORKS 😉😀
So happy that you both have this now 😁
I dont see how his old system could function. He said he needed to fix his solar panel connections. If they were really wired entirely wrong, no system works. Think its sad to get a free solar system worth 10k and leave it be, because I dont want to hire someone for a few bucks who checks it. But thats imo
So glad for Stacy to have all that working right! Thanks,Doug!
Wow! You are so honest to the public! Keep it up!
I've looked at Renogy before, though I'm not in the market yet. Glad to hear you have had a good experience with them.
I'm enjoying the solar show here. My kid in TN needs a good truck too. He had to sell his 01 Chevy when they had their third kid.
Doug is a gem for sharing his knowledge. What an awesome human!
YOU Sir are a modern day Hero. This is the Paul Revere of our time. May God Bless and keep you and Stacy
I have been waiting to hear what happened to your solar system. Glad it all works now. love all your tips and tricks.
Yes I’m interested in seeing how the generator hooks to your system. Thanks Doug
I’d like to see how generator hooks up as well ! Thanks Doug
Same
Thanks Doug! A neighbor just went on grid and gifted me their solar system. It is huge and I have been overwhelmed, 18 panels, 12 batteries, two controllers and two inverters. You inadvertently solved a piece of the puzzle for me when you explained how the components work with each other.
Stay in The Blessing!
I wish I had neighbors like that lol
That's awesome.
NOT Judging Doug - very impressed & Proud of you
I used Renogy in my bus conversion. Easy to install and still going strong after 2 years.
Thank you so much Doug! I've been doing research on various inverters and they were on the list to eval. It's awesome that they had live bodies willing to help too!
@Lindsay I appreciate the heads up. I'm making my own batteries however as lithium titanate oxide batteries are not available as a prebuilt, are better for cold temps(operating range of -30C to +65C), have a better charge cycle life(>20k cycles), and don't have the fire hazard of li-ion chemistry.
@Lindsay Indeed bad companies need to be kicked to the curb. Theres a lot of them out there. While solar isn't anything new, there are new advancements to it and to battery chemistry/tech.
@Lindsay There is a plethora of bad info out there that has been pushed through the decades, mostly sales pitch garbage. Most people dont realize we had electric cars back before the Model T. People have to be willing to do the homework, there is no easy solution. Nothing worthwhile is ever easy.
Thanks for the info..lets keep learning ! Praise Jesus.
LOVE your educational video's for "dummies" like me that need these! You guys are a true blessing and gift to us here! Thank you!
Thank you for all the great information! Between your video in the comments from everybody, I’m learning a lot. In the process of selling my home, downsizing, buying my land, and doing lots, lots of research. Your channel is the best that I have found and follow. Going back to my farming roots from when I was a kid ❤
Wonderful Doug! And i’d love to see how to hook up the generator so it automatically switches on in a power outage.❤
Blessings upon your house brother Doug.. ❤
I'm glad you were able to get a company that helped you get a solar system work for you! Thanks for telling us about this. I'm glad to know that a company can talk you through setting it up.
“The transfer pipe..hehe..Don’t Judge” ❤I love it! Use what you have! I do 😊
Ty Doug and Stacy:). We installed very small solar with 4 lead acid batteries many yrs ago. Now looking for bigger sys with AGM blemish 12v batteries. We liked Renogy solar panels. We can’t wait just need to save the cash. Ty guys. Merry Christmas everyone!
Check around in your area for the folks who work for the companies that maintain the cell towers. I was able to grab five used heavy duty AGM batteries for $700. These batteries are very high quality. But, they are also very heavy. Ended up with almost 1000ah of batteries for only $700 bucks. Not too bad.
Doug. Thank you for the solar video. I am looking forward to seeing how it works out for you. Blessings
Thanks for sharing. Please keep teaching and sharing new ways to get back to basics.
Amazing, and very informative, that's how people learn stuff. Thank you for making this, Doug! God bless and love you guys.
I ended up just getting an all-in-one Lithium Ion Battery Bank / generator for my van with 3 120v outlets 12v input and a few USB charging ports for around $800 instead of a gas generator, and so far it does alright for bare basic simple living and can be recharged via solar. Obviously a whole family or home would need more power but you can get ones that can handle 2000w or more and many of them can be expanded with extra batteries for longer life for people that use limited electricity.
Thanks Brother makes it sound so easy!! One day when I grow up I want to be like you and Stacey. Keep up the videos!!
Thank you Doug. Very refreshing to have an honest opinion about a product where NO money is involved! You and Stacy are amazing! Bless You!
I am so glad you are covering this because it is not as enviro friendly as people think.
Doug I am interested in seeing your video on how the generator is hooked up.... thank you man. Enjoyed this video. You Pioneers are a big help to everybody that follows after you because you share and give.
I’d like to see what kind of generator and How It Is hooked up also !! God Bless you both 🙏🏻✝️
So glad it's working and that Stacy has a fridge !!! We've had ours (tied to the grid) for almost a year and find it really reliable. I will have to say that the ROI isn't great but we didn't go in thinking it was. Wanted to get experience with it, while still using public utilities to offset any problems. Really happy with it and super easy charts in the app. So glad you're is finally operational, sounds like renogy has great customer service to troubleshoot your current setup and get it working with you. Kuddos to them.
Looks great. It's very complicated to me. I've got 8oo watts. But eventually want MORE. Renogy is the BEST, in my opinion!!
Haven't watched you guys in a while, but this was exactly what i was searching for. Thanks for not being a arrogant UA-camr simply plugging a product, or pretending we are all millionaires. Most people just want it straight and sweet. You did this. Thanks.
Want to see the next video. I always learn so much from you and your wife, thank you. Keep the videos coming.
Renogy is a pretty good Name i have a Shunt and a Renogy Battery Monitor from them, works flawlessly for my DIY solar system. Best of luck with it Doug.
Renogy is a good company. Been using their stuff for 4 years
Honesty is refreshing! Thank you for sharing this, we've been trying to learn everything we can about solar for when we are able to get our own.
For off grid homestead living: I love the solar stove, solar generator, solar panels, solar portable compact for devices. 😊
They're off public utilities.
They're not off the grid.
@endtimesareuponus8930 what's the difference if you don't mind me asking because everyone who says they're off grid, are using solar ?
@@endtimesareuponus8930Off of public utilities IS off the grid, because the grid IS a public utility!
@@LadyDivine Off of public utilities IS off the grid, because the grid IS a public utility! The other commmenter doesn't have a clue what he/she is talking about. Off grid means you have no power company feeding electricity into your home. It can also mean not public water, etc. I live IN an off-grid community, where the closest power/water, etc., is about four miles away. We haul in our own water, take out our own trash, and some of us have solar systems to power up our homes, whether they are trailers, tents, RVs, busses, or whatever. :)
@@Tumbleweed5150 that's what I thought. THANKS
I have been looking in to RENOGY but wasn't sure about them. There's a lot of scammers out there trying to sell you junk. I can't afford to buy junk, I need something that actually works! I love that you posted this to help me confirm!😍 Love you & Stacy keep up the great work!
Renogy is Known to be one of the Top Solar Company…..Good for you Guys…..God has Blessed us with the Sun for Life Love and Power. Bless You and Stacey. Keep those Video’s coming. 😁😁😁
This is wonderful news!! I don't have my homestead yet but LORD willing, when I do I will definitely being looking at technology like this..... Thank You !!
Not ready for solar yet but I have been researching. Thank you for doing so much leg work and giving great advice.
Love having an honest review that I can trust!! Please keep us updated
Always more info video is wanted! Along with ALL your videos ❤️. Thanks for the info and glad they work well with folks, my biggest worry on off grid is not having a freezer haha
Hello again Doug, thanks for this video as you and Stacy are a big part of us making the choice to go off grid. We love the fact that you don’t beat around the bush and as straight forward as I am. We hope to meet y’all some day soon.
Don and Cindy
This is the best instruction of solar I have ever seen! I feel like I slightly understand it now. Here's to dreaming we can become a self sufficient as you two are!
That video about hooking into fuse box would be a life saver!!!!
Awesome, im glad you got a system that actually works, I so agree with you on EVERYTHING.
Thank You for sharing
I definitely would like to see anything you want to film, edit and post
You guys are amazing
thanks for this video. I had been wondering whatever happened with the solar. I remember watching the video where you were putting up the panels. Glad you got something that actually works. will be checking this company out. Not out of the city yet, but to get hubby on board, we will have to have electricity. one more piece of the puzzle.
We have been following you guys for a long time but don’t comment much. We have learned a lot and plan to use many of your techniques. Thank you for what you do!
Thank Doug for sharing your life with us.
That’s some good equipment, glad you got the configuration worked out. The city here is pushing it but to be honest, I have no interest in it unless it is to go off grid. Having something smaller to run heat and/or a fridge is something I should reconsider though.
Thank you Doug! It’s so nice to have someone out on YT that will be completely honest with the public.
Merry Christmas to you and Stacy and God Bless
He's NOT off the grid.
He's just off public utilities.
It's expensive.
This definitely eased my mind about solar. I’m glad you found a company you can work with and share this. I always imagined solar being a lot more complicated and space consuming You have shed light on this So happy Stacey has a refrigerator!
Better more practical education than any University or College of today, thanks Doug and Stacy!
Nice setup Doug! Glad you got it up and running
Thank you so so much once again, Doug!!
Oh the dream to have a freezer ! ♥️ Or a hot tub , Lol now you have this old girl dreaming ! 25 yrs. Fully off-grid and roughing it , but peacefully ! ♥️
Very cool thank you for getting back. Feels great to communicate with real humans. Absolutely love your show
So glad you got your system up and running, and Stacy got her refrigarator. Looking forward to another video with more info.
Thanks for your informative vlogs.
Nice to have you back giving great consumer information (based on personal experience as usual). Looking forward to seeing more of you guys in the new year. Have a wonderful Christmas and may 2023 be kinder to you🙏🏻🙏🏻🎉🎉🎄🎄
I'm trying to catch up on all your videos. I'm not living off grid but kept watching because videos reminded me of my childhood. You and Stacy have wonderful attitudes and I respect your ambition and achievement of going from city to country. Congrats for doing it !! I'm jealous!! I've said that probably 100 times lol God bless!!
Glad you all got that set up... I know you all were doing FABULOUS without it but it is nice being able to keep things good and cold/frozen.
Thank you for the video! You make the system hookup look easy. It sounds like Renogy really took care of you. That's awesome! Glad you guys have a working system and a new fridge! God bless and protect you... especially with the oncoming storm. Have a Merry Christmas!!! 🎄
Hello and thank you! One of the simplest easy to follow explanations I've seen on UA-cam. I've been quietly following you and Stacey now for a couple of months this is my first comment lol. I bought my tiny homestead in June 22 and moved onto it in August. I've learned so much from you two and thank you from my heart ❤️ 💙 💜 God bless!
I am so glad you guys are making things a little more comfortable for each other ❤️The coolest thing to me is if it all were to fail you guys already know how to survive without it! I sure am learning a lot from you guys! Thanks so much for sharing all your experiences with us!
Impressive! Nice work, once again, Doug!
Thanks Doug,it's good to hear coming straight from the user of the product with real experiences, and to hear it coming from somebody whose motivation I trust. Always happy to see your systems and set up. They make interesting videos even though they don't always apply to me,but the information for my friends or the future is always relevant.
The quintessential expert on solar is Hoardernurse1. he takes you thru a tour of his battery room twice a day in his videos to show you how many watts his solar is producing, then if something breaks down he calls "His Electrician" to fix it. 3 Eggs 🥚🥚🥚🥚
Bless your heart Bro Doug, thank you so very much for everything you do and share. Praying God's abundant blessings for you and your precious loved ones 🙏😇✝️ MARANATH LORD JESUS ✝️💜🙏👍
Thank you so much for this video and explaining this system in an easily understood way. Your hard work is much appreciated.
Thanks for this, we too have been off grid for 14 years. But with propane and a generator and some solar charging lights. Thank you again 🌻
Hey this is great! We are on grid, but got suckered by some company as well. We are changing things up slowly for our homestead, we will have our wood stove for the house shortly here and do have some power from the solar during the day. Our battery back up is not working again... I definitely need to show my hubby this one! Thanks Doug for all you do! We are truly blessed to have found you guys.
I want to see the video where the generators hooked up to your solar. Great video Doug been wanting to look into solar but not had a clue on which ones to even begin to look at. Merry Christmas to you and Stacy. 🎄🎁
If I may ... do you see the two orange wires going into the bottom left of the black box on the wall? Well, one of them is wired to the generator. All he has to do is start the generator and the black box does the rest. It's so easy a caveman could do it.
Just an idea from something I saw,
Adding a small chest freezer in other/outer building (the cold won't all drop out every time the doors opened= less power to maintain temp) and You can have just a fridge fridge in the house
(Turning freez compartment down to fridge temp inside house) for more "cool" storage..
Stay Safe and God Bless
When I lived with my grand parents for 2 years we lived completely off grid with no solar for a year over 50 years ago. Lol I loved it.
Thanks for the info, Doug. I'm thinking of investing in a portable solar system. To relieve these high electric rates. Just enough power to run a few electric heaters and back up for fridge and freezer. ROI is important to me, but portability, as who knows where I'll be, has always been my most important goal. Portable fencing, portable fridge, portable appliances...But that's just me :)
Great videos Doug and Stacy! Please do a video on showing how you hooked the solar system to your house panel. Thanks again,!!
Solar is pretty nice of people understand everything that goes into it. Appliances and so on.
Thank you for all the very important information you two provide in every area. Thank you!
