What? WHAT?!?! This just blew my mind! How have I been crocheting for two decades and never heard of this?! Thank you! My amigurumi game will be so much stronger now!!! 🤯
I’ve been doing amigurumi for years and never understood what people were talking about with “yarn over, yarn under” conversations. This video is a game changer - THANK YOU
I love this. I really think personal tension should go into this choice though. My natural tension is pretty tight and trying to "yarn under, yarn under" is next to impossible to pull through my stitches
Just started two months ago and learned yarn over first, then switched to yarn under about 1 month ago and thought I was doing it wrong. This is because I did yarn under, yarn under and most of the tutorials I see for yarn under show yarn under first and yarn over for the second. Thanks for posting this video so I know that everything is going to work out with the yarn under, yarn under way.
This video is amazing!! Definitely thought I was yarning under incorrectly. I love how you explain the different SC methods. Wish I could love this video instead of like because it's just that good!!
Thanks for making such a clear example of all the over/under combos! I think I'm going to switch up to under/over. Under/under was so tight I bent a hook!
@@FalseBubbles I've been doing under/over for a bunch of shape sample pieces and I think it's the perfect stitch for me! Less hand fatigue but still a good dense stitch :D
Thanks for such a detailed tutorial. I love making little critters for my grandkids. I've only just started making amigurumi even though I've been crocheting for 40+ years so all the tips and tricks I can find are greatly appreciated. I'm self taught for the most part with getting started having been taught to me by my grandma when I was around 7 or 8 so unfortunately I never really learned to read written patterns so all the video tutorials here on UA-cam is where I get ideas and instructions. I just found you and am now a new subscriber. Again thanks for what you do for all those who love to crochet and those just starting out. God bless 🕊️💛🕯️🙏
Thanks for this! One video into learning how to do amigurumi and I’m already having to fix my basic crochet skills- I’ve just been going for it, whatever way of pulling the yarn through worked! I’ll definitely strive for a YU YO rhythm when doing amigurumi, and I’ll also pay attention to yarning under/over CONSISTENTLY when doing other projects 😅
Thank youu, ive been looking at other amigarumi and my stitches just wouldnt look like theirs. I was told it was yarn under, but it still wouldnt turn out right. Your video made me realize that yarn under, yarn over was exactly what i was looking for
Omg, I always wondered why my SC didn't look like other amigurumi makers. I assumed I was doing something wrong, not that there were different ways to crochet. I'm a yo, yo person but I'm going to try to yu, yu and see if I like it better. Thank you!
I started 5 days ago and did YU, YO the whole time. I think I will keep doing that it feels the most natural for me. Thank you for the video I thought I dit it wrong.😂
Thankyou for this I never understood the yarn over yarn under I was taught one way and thought that was it lol so now I’m going to have to change up my stitch bcuZ i really like how tight the stitch is on yarn under under.
Working on one of my first projects that isn't a blanket or clothes, and wasn't sure how to stop the cotton from popping out. I crochet tight enough that I have multiple bandaids on after I work a little while, and use such a small hook that it's hard to get into the stitches, haha .. This video was exactly what I was looking for. :] I'm fully self taught, so it's always nifty to see how much you can learn online with a quick search ! Thanks for making this.
why I didn't find it earlier. I'm struggling with yarn under 2x, but the results of yarn over 2x isn't really nice even though it's easier to do. I didn't know I can do yarn under yarn over, the result is similar with yarn under 2x but it's way easier. I try it right away after see this video. 😂 thank you so much ❤️❤️❤️
Hopefully it works for you! Let me know! Also Going down a hook size or two sometimes helps. For example, I crochet with Size 4/worsted/aran yarn and crochet with a 3.0mm hook!
Yes, I've worked with a 3.5 hook last night but I'm going to try a sturdier yarn like loops and threads impeccable. The yarn that I used last night kept splitting. I think the change in yarn will help also. Thanks again.
This explained so well what I’ve been wondering for so long! Naturally I have always used yarn under yarn under but recently realized the “right way” is over, over. Do your projects need to be flipped inside out when you use the under under technique?
Aweee thanks so much! I'm so glad you found it helpful! There is no effect on the right vs. wrong side of the piece! Normally my stuff curves inwards and I have to invert it to the "right side" early on in the project, but using the yarn under vs. yarn over won't change which side is the "right" or "wrong" side
I usually crochet with plush yarn so maybe this takes into account. I will say that this is up to the person doing it. I crochet very tight. I use a bigger hook than patterns recommend most of the time and still crochet so tight there is a very noticeable size difference. I just tried doing one of the yarn under patterns and failed miserably 😅. I could feel that the stitch was horribly tight and I could not finesse the hook through even with force. No clue how to not make it so tight or if it just means I should stick with the yarn over method.
Thanks so much for doing this tutorial and really showing the difference between the stitches. Do the other stitches outside the traditional make the piece curl more than the traditional? Love your videos - made the Angy Coffee and really enjoyed the pattern! A request - I have a hard time with hearing and the background music is really distracting. It makes your excellent directions and observations hard for me to hear. Is there a way to turn down the background music, or just not have it at all?
I was watching this video and my boyfriend in the background was like “YARN UNDER?!?!” .. he always hears me watching tutorials on tradition yarn over and it made me laugh so hard lol
Umm i have a question i wanted to use yarn under x yarn over but how do i make invisible decrease with it? Do i just make a normal invisible decrease? (Great video by the way, really helpful)
Invisible decreases is a bit different! Decreasing is like a stitch and the way you yarn under it over are like variations of that stitch. Invisible decreases is just a different way of decreasing. You can yarn under or yarn over with invisible decreasing ♥️
@@FalseBubblesTY! I noticed u don't stagger the stitches but still get a tight effect, is this due to smaller hook u use? So much to learn wish u were my rl crochet teacher!
I finally understand after several days of trying to figure out what all these yoyo yuyu yuyo yoyu posts are even talking about. I am like what is this secret code everyone knows but me😅
Hi there! I am using a 3.0mm hook with impeccable yarn from loops and threads. This yarn is acrylic and worsted weight but I find it a little bit on the thicker and stiffer side of worsted. I tend to use this yarn for tutorials because it really clearly shows the stitches, but for amigurumi I choose a something a little bit softer!
This makes so much sense to me now coz a lot of ppl say that they don't prefer "yarn under" bcoz it uses so much more yarn than "yarn over." And some happen to prefer the "under" method bcoz it makes the stitches look neater & more aligned but I guess wutever rows their both. 😆😆 I am quite curious since I tried doing yarn-under for a sample ball head, how do u decrease using yarn-under? Bcoz when I tried the invisible decrease the same method of yarnunder, it looked weird to see a diff stitch in my ball 😂😅 plsss help ahahhaag
Oh sorry I missed this! I invisible decrease the same way and it seems to turn out fine.... I normally yarn under on both parts of the stitch. Are you doing a full yarn under stitch or half??? Maybe its tension too!
I don't really see the difference between yarn under yarn under vs yarn under yarn over but do you see the difference? Yarn under yarn under is extremely difficult for me to do... I wonder how ppl are doing this...
One of the best videos I’ve seen on this topic! Thanks! Quick question: I’m looking at a written amigurumi pattern that involves both single and treble crochet stitches. For the singles, I’m planning to use yarn under, yarn over. What do you suggest for the trebles? I’m stumped. Thanks so much!!
Not sure if this is useful now, but I do YU/YO naturally. I personally would go under for the initial grab ONLY and over for the remaining loops. Not sure if this made sense or if this is helpful, but it’s at least how I’d do it.
What? WHAT?!?! This just blew my mind! How have I been crocheting for two decades and never heard of this?! Thank you! My amigurumi game will be so much stronger now!!! 🤯

Nope! You just keep the right side out as usual!!!

I might be wrong, but for the last example are you yarn overing twice instead of over/under?
Hi there, I had to watch it back and I don't think I am yarning over twice I think its the way I hold my hook and yarn!

so what is the difference (if any) between the finished look of yu/yu and yu/yo ?
