- The beautiful NRZ 14A Garratt number 525 put on a great show for us on a chartered freight train in July 2017. Here we see Part 2 of the excellent show that the loco crew put on for us. The charter ran from Bulawayo to Cement, where the 14A was connected to a rather rusty water tank to be filled for the return run (which we didn't follow). Please try to find Part 1 for the fabulous sunrise sequences. The day finished with a rare use of the turntable - although the 360 degree turn does seem a little pointless !

I must say Ken that I'm really concerned that a change of management in Zimbabwe will mean an end to the Garratts. By the way, only one of us is a lad ! Dandan's my Mongolian wife (met her alongside the JingPeng Pass).

It's the way you captured the images and presented them ! At 7:55, for example, it's almost like a teacher delivering his piece in a lecture theatre before a class of students who may not all have seen the real thing at work. Well, I'm one of them and I thoroughly enjoy it !

Great video; Good old Garratt keeping up it's good work in Zimbabwe without the now everywhere ubiquitous back-up diesel somewhere behind in the train where one can't be sure whether the shiny steam loco in front is pulling or the diesel at the back pushing!
Sadly, this was a charter for our benefit .... and, you've guessed it .... there was a diesel on hand just in case. I'm pleased to report that it wasn't needed though.

They must get a lot of line fires with all the grass etc. very close to the track. Wonderful locomotives. Always amazed at their size running on 3'6" track.
Strangely, I have never seen a lineside fire there. I believe they have spark guards within the chimney. They are very large for such narrow gauge track. I have thought the same myself! .... Andy

Good Video there is life left in 525 . I hope it will be preserved in working order and not left to decay.
I fear it will only limp on as long as there are foreigners willing to spend money to see it working.
525 is already derelict this is 519 carrying the plates off 525 for the camera's. 519 today (December 2017) is at Hwange in daily service.
Last boiler inspection December 1991!

Thank-you for a fine video. It's encouraging to find anything that works in Zimbabwe in view of the stories we read coming from there. The locomotive (whichever one it is) looks superficially sound, and clearly goes well. Would I be right though, in assuming from the plate shown that the boiler hasn't been inspected since 1991?
Yes. You would be absolutely correct. They're kept working by swapping parts around - including boilers. It's very difficult to be sure which loco you're watching because every part is swapped from another loco !
@@AndyDandanFisherSteam They don't inspect the boilers!?! The greatest boon to safety was the American Society of Mechanical Engineers establishing rigorous boiler inspection standards!
@@gregorymalchuk272 Boilers are inspected and repaired to the best of their ability. However, the country and the railway is short of money so repairs are not carried out to a standard that European and US engineers would demand. Andy
Let us hope that ZNR will save remaining steam locomotives for preservation.The drivers and firemen there seem not only to enjoy working on them they have also acquired great skills in their maintenance which helps keep them on the rails after so many years.

I'm curious what was so interesting to look at that none of the kids on the bridge turned to watch the train after it passed?
Well spotted !!! They were there only because we'd asked them to be there, I'm afraid. In reality they didn't seem to grasp the idea that the Garratt was the point of interest. It annoys me, every time I watch this sequence too ! Incidentally, the guys standing on the opening bridge were there of their own accord. However, they were watching us - not the Garratt. Andy
I remember being told in 2008 that all steam in Zimbabwe had ended. I was living in Botswana at the time and could have gone on a trip... but they were still going in 2017?
And should be still steamable in 2021 but they're only kept alive for those who pay for them and, of course, there's no tourism right now. So the future of Zimbabwe's Garratts is hanging in the balance ...... Andy
Top speed of garrett locomotive?
It would vary enormously, Raymond, depending mainly on the driving wheel diameter. I've personally seen Garratts travelling at around 55mph (88kph) ..... Andy

I had never seen a 2-8-2-2-8-2 before and certainly not one actually working on a daily bases!
The Garratt featured here is a 2-6-2+2-6-2, however there is still a Class 16A 2-8-2+2-8-2 hauling coal at Hwange Colliery. Take a look at the clip below, also taken in July 2017 -

And Garrats should be part of it.
There are several Garratts in preservation around the world ... plus these few in Zimbabwe which can be steamed to order!

It seemed to me that the loco was turned then realized it would be facing the wrong way when returned to Bulawayo.
I have to confess Roy that I know the reason for the full turn ! They only turned it because we asked to see the turntable working - the loco was already facing the right way .... sorry !!

I don't think I can agree with your interpretation of a Garratt being a tank engine but I have to confess that the Garratt was turned especially for us just to demonstrate the turntable as much as the locomotive !! ..... Andy
@@AndyDandanFisherSteam Surely many SAR Garratts, esp the GL's were run bunker first so that the crew were not asphyxiated in the tunnels!
@@robertrich663 I think in normal service, they'd run whichever way around they already were although, as with most steam locomotives, it's normal to run chimney first ...... Andy
@@AndyDandanFisherSteam I agree, in normal service the Garratts worked both ways. The big exception in the world to 'chimney first' are the Southern Pacific 'cab in front' mallets which had the tender coupled at the smokebox end, giving the crew the best forward of any steam engine. Needless to say when they operated passenger trains it can't have been any improvement for the poor passenger!

All steam in Africa is doomed. Politician upheaval throughout the many countries there and the general lack of interest in maintaining even a small fleet of operational locomotives for the fledgling tourist industry is too expensive

I agree that steam locomotives are bad polluters. Most of what you can see in the smoke, though, are the particulates which fall to the ground rapidly. The real damage is done by greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide. These are given out in just as large a quantity by road vehicles, aircraft, ships and power stations. There are only a tiny number of steam locos left working and they are beautiful and fascinating machines. They are a valuable relic from our industrial past and need to be saved from destruction. The pollution from these few steam locos is TINY compared to the pollution from the billions of road vehicles, aircraft and ships in the world. Getting rid of just a handful of steam locomotives will make no difference to the world but getting rid of the pollution from road vehicles would probably sort the problem in one move. If you’d like to save our Earth from disaster, please get rid of your car or motor bike, don’t buy anything that has been delivered by air, sea or lorry, switch off your electricity at home, never go on holiday by aircraft or car. Not easy, is it?
