    Had this exact noise happen to my 2007 335i n54 e92. Happened when I was coming home from work. The temp was 70 f outside and a bit cloudy. Check underneath the charge pipe and see if you see a little leprechaun playing with marbles. He got me the other day.

    I am new ot your channel, It is taking me a while to get though all your vids. I love that fact that you take everyone through the problem solving process as opposed to just showing a repair/modification done in an ideal situation like those other channels. I have owned a e93 335i for about 7 years and added bolt ons shortly after purchase. Back then the n54 modding scene in Brisane (yes I am a fellow QLDer) was pretty primative. It has come a long way since then. You have inspired me to up my game! My car e93, M sports pack, Black on black, DCT, aFe dual cone cold air intake, VRSF 7" intercolloer, VRSF catless downpipes, Alloy charge pipe, JB 4, Stock turbos, Bilsein B12 shocks all round.

    i have built 2 of these engines, fresh one on a stand as we speak, i do understand this is a budget build but imo there are certain steps in a build you must account for in your budget, if you do not remove the crank you just dont know what you got?, new bearing and polish crank at least, check block for cracks, cyl. bores for round , deck hieghts and might need to machine a few thou. of deck to make flat, same for cyl. head. if your oil pump has 200k on it put a new one in its the heart of your engine, this is just the basic stuff and i know its a build on the cheap, but if you gotta tear it down 3 times then it dont become cheap no more. excluding some of these things might be the cause of some of your problems you are having, love your channel and all the respect to you . my advice to all is that 7 or 800 hp will not come cheap. cheers.

    Love the videos.
    Hindsight is 20/20 but imo measuring when assembling an engine is a must.
    Even machine shops get it wrong sometimes and it pays to make sure the measurements are spot on beforehand.
    You live and you learn and the next one will be even better for it haha

    The fact is N54 motors sound like a diesel engine to start, the history of the N54 is unusual one, an absolute beast created by Alpina. You might be distorting the engine block cylinder bores out of round with the extra torque just my hunch. Thanks for all the great content excellent channel

      👍🏻👍🏻a good reason why a torque plate should be used when boring/honing blocks.
      To me the sound actually sounded like a slack chain , they commonly seem to make the most noise around 2.5-3.5k revs if a bit slack. And a new chain is way more likely to stretch on bed in in comparison to re using an old chain.

    Cool to see the price break down. Since we talked about 19T's being laggy, I've put a lot of thought into the future of my car. Its not getting torn down right away as I have the DD Outback thats going to get a WRX swap, but I'm seriously considering going with forged rods, pistons, closed deck inserts, and maybe even some head work along with a change in turbos. Probably wont be until next year some time though. if I can pull it off. Lots of irons in the fire and what not. Im definitely going to be looking forward to seeing a head to head between two engines with forged parts and hopefully you find the culprit causing your mystery noise. I'm interested to hear what that is.

I put the window down listened for a few mins of driving realized what it was. Never had one warning light, then drove it home 25 miles. I found one #3 spun rod bearing super deformed and stuck to the journal, despite all that some how there was no damage to crank I polished it cleaned all the rods new king bearings ARP bolts and its been fine for 10kmiles

    If you think the knock could be related to something on the accessory belt drive or an idler or tensioner. Simple test, take the belt off and see if the noise goes away. Also, I don't remember if you mentioned it or even did it but any thoughts on copper spray on the head gasket? I have done this on quite a few different MLS style, and traditional head gaskets that have sealing problems in high PSI applications with good results. It does typically move the 'fuse' in the motor to something more expensive but it generally keeps the head gasket sealed.

    • @ZeroTo60Tube
      @ZeroTo60Tube  Рік тому

      Hey man, unfortunately this knock is so quiet you can't hear it in neutral, only when there is a bit of load on the motor, then when boost comes in you can't hear it. I just hear it on the transbrake.... i think. I did look in to copper spray on the gasket but couldnt get and definitive info. It looks like the elring gaskets do have a coating on the entire gasket, but its these elrings that seem to fail........ or is the failure due to insufficient clamping force on the gasket. There are so many issues with engine rebuilds. But not a lot of people talk about when they make a mistake.

    I want to share something I think is important for many N54 and N55 (Or anyone using this part) owners. There is a BMP (Black Market Performance) 90 degree fitting that goes onto the Walbro upgrade pumps to fit it to the main fuel line from the LPFP. If you have been trying to find out why your low pressure fuel runs lower than the regular ish 72 PSI at idle etc and runs around 50 or 60 etc. Check that fitting. It may not be sealing like it needs for that purpose. It may just need tightening or it may not even seal like it should at all. I just wanted to share that with you all and thank you also for all the help and learning I have gotten from Zero to 60 and the Members etc. Thank you!

  • @geordiegibson1210
    @geordiegibson1210 Рік тому +1

    Couple of things. If it was piston slap or rod knock, knock sensors would pick that up unless knock sensors have been disabled by the tune. I'm guessing the knock happens even when the car is parked and in neutral? If so, that eliminates the drivetrain, up until the flex plate. If knock sensors are still enabled in the tune, and they show nothing, it's got be either at the front or the back of the motor.
    If I was you, the quickest (and probably dodgiest test), would be to take the accessory drive belt off the front. Noise continues? It's either timing chain tensioner issue or at the back of the motor - flex plate is still an option. From my experience, flex plate/flywheel rattles tend to sound lounder and more coming from closer to the back doors, whereas timing chain rattles are closer to the radiatior.
    Just a couple of thoughts and some simple things to check. Might pay to talk to Ken and make sure knock sensors are still enabled and logging correctly though.

    • @ZeroTo60Tube
      @ZeroTo60Tube  Рік тому +1

      Knock sensors are still enabled and not even desensitized at this point. The motor is pretty clean correction wise in the logs. A couple of things to note, its so quiet, you can't hear it once it starts making boost, you can't hear it with the ac on, you can't hear it when the car is stationary. I think i can hear it on the transbrake, but not really sure because turbos start boosting. I never noticed it until about a month ago. But that was one of the first drives with the miltek exhaust. This could just be normal aftermarket piston noise, or poor tolerance, or the converter.... i really need to check the converter bolts are still tight.

    Check your AC pulley. Had a sound that sounded almost exactly like rod knock and it ended up being my AC pulley. They are known for catastrophically exploding. (Which mine inevitably did very shortly after)
    Additionally, in regards to the arp head studs, you can get a DIY timesert kit to do the timeserts yourself and it comes with everything you need to drill and tap the block.
    Hopefully this helps!
    Let me know if you want any more info.

      @ZeroTo60Tube  Рік тому

      Hey man, will double check the pulley, it felt ok last time i checked it, however that was when i was diagnosing the power steering knock. It could well be the pulley. Especially considering i can't hear this knock when the a/c is on. Those timesert kits are $2000aud here :S

I've searched and searched for answers and I'm going crazy. I've had the LPFP out four times trying different things hoping it was a kinked line or a leak etc. But nope. The pump runs fine and I tested it with protool as well and it seems to run like it should but now all I get is 9 psi LFP. which of course makes the HFP very low as well around 600 to 700 psi. I bought a new EKPM3 unit (Two weeks wait because I live in Chinada and I can't pay $400 from BMW for one instead paid $80 shipped) and I guess I'm going to be the fool again and throw parts at it until I'm borrowing money for my BMW addiction. Big end knock usually show itself on piston deceleration especially in neutral. It's quiet while accelerating because it's has the force of combustion taking up the slack between the bearings but as soon as combustion stops and the rods start to have gravity acting on them especially in the midrange.....that's when get the movement up and down between the bearings and then you get the knock.

    I love it man! You take risks the majority of BMW owners will frown upon. No reason a rod and piston motor won't hold together as long as you took the time to match ring gap to power level, and have good rod bearing clearance. I bet you are hearing piston slap, annoying but no big deal. Good luck in your legal battles man, Australia has gone way off the rails, and seems America isn't far behind.

      No idea on power really. I’ve had several different configurations on this core engine now. It’s currently pretty mild with only spring pressure due to sorting out tuning and fuel issues. I wish MHD would show more love for the single turbo guys.

      @@ZeroTo60Tube let me know what you find out. I have also built my own motor in my garage. But I have seen a pattern with rod knock, it’s always throwing a knock sensor code before you even hear it. My friend just recently got a knock sensor code but the car sounded fine. He then proceeded to drive to Georgia from New York and by the time he arrived it was knocking horribly bad. I do think you are fine. 9/10 times by the time you hear it, you’ll have stripper glitter in your oil filter. Check your oil filter and check your codes.

    • @ZeroTo60Tube

      @Zalle335 Рік тому

      @@ZeroTo60Tube Sorry to hear, you have to pay import tax/duty fees, correct? I found the entire bedplate bolt kit for 100$, crank seals for 70$ and main bearings for 300$ I believe. So total around 500$USD. That is for OEM bolts/seals and ACL bearings.
      From autodoc the seals would be 35$ for Elring and not sure about the bolts, couldn't find the entire kit there but probably around 50-70$ so total of maybe 400$ max.
